We performed a critical reinvestigation of microwave enhancement of nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) of acrylamide (AM) in aqueous media in the dynamic (DYN) mode with a combination of a conventional hydrosoluble radical initiator and a β‐phosphonylated nitroxide (SG1). Based on the results of our previous work, a complementary series of polymerization reactions was carried out between 130 and 160 °C using only the DYN mode to ascertain the existence of a microwave effect. The polymer conversion (p), molar masses, polydispersity index, and viscosity of each sample were measured. The temperature was monitored inside and outside of the vessel using an optical fiber sensor and an IR sensor, respectively. Microwave enhancement of polymerization, temperature control and viscosity of the reaction media were closely related. We also furthered the field of hydrophilic AB diblock copolymer synthesis using a tertiary SG1‐based macroalkoxyamine and directly synthesized both poly(acrylamide‐b‐sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonate), a neutral‐b‐anionic diblock copolymer, and poly(acrylamide‐b‐3‐dimethyl(methacrylamidopropyl)ammonium propanesulfonate), a neutral‐b‐zwitterionic diblock copolymer, in homogeneous aqueous media. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we compare two routes for carrying out in situ nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of styrene using the C‐phenyl‐Ntert‐butylnitrone (PBN)/2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) pair to identify the best one for an optimal control. One route consists in adding PBN to the radical polymerization of styrene, while the other approach deals with a prereaction between the nitrone and the free radical initiator prior to the addition of the monomer and the polymerization. The combination of ESR and kinetics studies allowed demonstrating that when the polymerization of styrene is initiated by AIBN in the presence of enough PBN at 110 °C, fast decomposition of AIBN is responsible for the accumulation of dead polymer chains at the early stages of the polymerization, in combination with controlled polystyrene chains. On the other hand, PBN acts as a terminating agent at 70 °C with the formation of a polystyrene end‐capped by an alkoxyamine, which is not labile at this temperature but that can be reactivated and chain‐extended by increasing the temperature. Finally, the radical polymerization of styrene is better controlled when the nitrone/initiator pair is prereacted at 85 °C for 4 h in toluene before styrene is added and polymerized at 110 °C. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is an inexpensive and environmentally friendly medium for radical polymerizations. ScCO2 is suited for heterogeneous controlled/living radical polymerizations (CLRPs), since the monomer, initiator, and control reagents (nitroxide, etc.) are soluble, but the polymer formed is insoluble beyond a critical degree of polymerization (Jcrit). The precipitated polymer can continue growing in (only) the particle phase giving living polymer of controlled well‐defined microstructure. The addition of a colloidal stabilizer gives a dispersion polymerization with well‐defined colloidal particles being formed. In recent years, nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization have all been conducted as heterogeneous polymerizations in scCO2. This Highlight reviews this recent body of work, and describes the unique characteristics of scCO2 that allows composite particle formation of unique morphology to be achieved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photoinduced solution polymerization of 4‐methacryloyl‐1,2,2,6,6‐pentamethyl‐piperidinyl (MPMP), used as a reactive hindered amine piperidinol derivative, was performed. The obtained MPMP homopolymer had a very narrow molecular weight distribution (1.06–1.39) according to gel permeation chromatography. The number‐average and weight‐average molecular weights increased linearly with the monomer conversion, this being characteristic of controlled/living free‐radical polymerizations. Electron spin resonance signals were detected in the MPMP homopolymer and in a polymer mixture solution, and they were assigned to nitroxide radicals, which were bound to the polymer chains and persisted at a level of 10?9 mol/L during the polymerization. Instead of the addition of mediated nitroxide radicals such as 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐piperidinyl‐1‐oxy (TEMPO), those radicals (>N? O ·) were formed in situ during the photopolymerization of MPMP, and so the reaction mechanism was understood as being similar to that of TEMPO‐mediated controlled/living free‐radical polymerization. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The article describes unprecedented nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of methyl and phenyl vinyl ketone (MVK and PVK) using a sterically highly hindered alkoxyamine as initiator/regulator. It is shown that controlled polymerization of PVK is far more difficult to achieve than controlled MVK polymerization. Whereas for MVK high conversion resulting in polyvinyl ketone with low polydispersity index is readily obtained, the PVK polymerization provides good results only in the presence of free nitroxide and styrene as additives. Vinyl ketone polymerizations are analyzed by ESI mass spectrometry. These MS studies provide insights into the problems associated with the controlled nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of PVK. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An N‐alkoxyamine macroinitiator bearing a polymeric nitroxide cap was synthesized and used to investigate the effect of nitroxide size on the rate of nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP). This macroinitiator was prepared from asymmetric double‐headed initiator 9 , which contains both an α‐bromoester and an N‐alkoxyamine functionality. Poly(methyl methacrylate) was grown by atom transfer radical polymerization from the α‐bromoester end of this initiator, resulting in a macroinitiator (Mn = 31,000; PDI = 1.34) bearing a nitroxide cap permanently attached to a polymer chain. The polymerization kinetics of this macroinitiator in NMRP were compared with known N‐alkoxyamine initiator 1 . It was found that the rate of polymerization was unaffected by the size of the macromolecular nitroxide cap. It was confirmed that NMRP using this macroinitiator is a “living” process. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 2015–2025, 2007  相似文献

The competitiveness of the combination and disproportionation reactions between a 1‐phenylpropyl radical, standing for a growing polystyryl macroradical, and a 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) radical in the nitroxide‐mediated free‐radical polymerization of styrene was quantitatively evaluated by the study of the transition geometry and the potential energy profiles for the competing reactions with the use of quantum‐mechanical calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) UB3‐LYP/6‐311+G(3df, 2p)//(unrestricted) Austin Model 1 level of theory. The search for transition geometries resulted in six and two transition structures for the radical combination and disproportionation reactions, respectively. The former transition structures, mainly differing in the out‐of‐plane angle of the N? O bond in the transition structure TEMPO molecule, were correlated with the activation energy, which was determined to be in the range of 8.4–19.4 kcal mol?1 from a single‐point calculation at the DFT UB3‐LYP/6‐311+G(3df, 2p)//unrestricted Austin Model 1 level. The calculated activation energy for the disproportionation reaction was less favorable by a value of more than 30 kcal mol?1 in comparison with that for the combination reaction. The approximate barrier difference for the TEMPO addition and disproportionation reaction was slightly smaller for the styrene polymerization system than for the acrylonitrile polymerization system, thus indicating that a β‐proton abstraction through a TEMPO radical from the polymer backbone could diminish control over the radical polymerization of styrene with the nitroxide even more than in the latter system. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled free‐radical homopolymerization of n‐butyl acrylate was studied in aqueous miniemulsions at 112 and 125 °C with a low molar mass alkoxyamine unimolecular initiator and an acyclic β‐phosphonylated nitroxide mediator, Ntert‐butyl‐N‐(1‐diethylphosphono‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl) nitroxide, also called SG1. The polymerizations led to stable latices with 20 wt % solids and were obtained with neither coagulation during synthesis nor destabilization over time. However, in contrast to latices obtained via classical free‐radical polymerization, the average particle size of the final latices was large, with broad particle size distributions. The initial [SG1]0/[alkoxyamine]0 molar ratio was shown to control the rate of polymerization. The fraction of SG1 released upon macroradical self‐termination was small with respect to the initial alkoxyamine concentration, indicating a very low fraction of dead chains. Average molar masses were controlled by the initial concentration of alkoxyamine and increased linearly with monomer conversion. The molar mass distribution was narrow, depending on the initial concentration of free nitroxide in the system. The initiator efficiency was lower than 1 at 112 °C but was very significantly improved when either a macroinitiator was used at 112 °C or the polymerization temperature was raised to 125 °C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The living/controlled copolymerization of methyl acrylate with 1‐alkenes and norbornene derivatives through several radical polymerization techniques has been achieved. These techniques include atom transfer radical polymerization, reversible addition–fragmentation transfer polymerization, nitroxide‐mediated polymerization, and degenerative transfer polymerization. These systems display many of the characteristics of a living polymerization process: the molecular weight increases linearly with the overall conversion, but the polydispersity remains low. Novel block copolymers have been synthesized through the sequential addition of monomers or chain extension. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this research, poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(butyl acrylate) (PMMA‐b‐PBA) block copolymers were prepared by 1,1‐diphenylethene (DPE) controlled radical polymerization in homogeneous and miniemulsion systems. First, monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA), initiator 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and a control agent DPE were bulk polymerized to form the DPE‐containing PMMA macroinitiator. Then the DPE‐containing PMMA was heated in the presence of a second monomer BA, the block copolymer was synthesized successfully. The effects of solvent and polymerization methods (homogeneous polymerization or miniemulsion polymerization) on the reaction rate, controlled living character, molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distribution (PDI) of polymers throughout the polymerization were studied and discussed. The results showed that, increasing the amounts of solvent reduced the reaction rate and viscosity of the polymerization system. It allowed more activation–deactivation cycles to occur at a given conversion thus better controlled living character and narrower molecular weight distribution of polymers were demonstrated throughout the polymerization. Furthermore, the polymerization carried out in miniemulsion system exhibited higher reaction rate and better controlled living character than those in homogeneous system. It was attributed to the compartmentalization of growing radicals and the enhanced deactivation reaction of DPE controlled radical polymerization in miniemulsified droplets. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2‐Phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromopropanoate was successfully used as an initiator in consecutive living radical polymerization routes, such as metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated free‐radical polymerization, to produce various types of acrylonitrile‐containing polymers, such as styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐polyacrylonitrile, and polystyrene‐b‐polyacrylonitrile. The kinetic data were obtained for the metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of styrene–acrylonitrile. All the obtained polymers were characterized with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the controlled‐radical polymerization of the photocleavable o‐nitrobenzyl methacrylate (NBMA) and o‐nitrobenzyl acrylate (NBA) monomers. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), and nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) have been evaluated. For all methods used, the acrylate‐type monomer does not polymerize, or polymerizes very slowly in a noncontrolled manner. The methacrylate‐type monomer can be polymerized by RAFT with some degree of control (PDI ∼ 1.5) but leading to molar masses up to 11,000 g/mol only. ATRP proved to be the best method since a controlled‐polymerization was achieved when conversions are limited to 30%. In this case, polymers with molar masses up to 17,000 g/mol and polydispersity index as low as 1.13 have been obtained. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chain transfer to solvent has been investigated in the conventional radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP) of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) at 120 °C. The extent of chain transfer to DMF can significantly impact the maximum attainable molecular weight in both systems. Based on a theoretical treatment, it has been shown that the same value of chain transfer to solvent constant, Ctr,S, in DMF at 120 °C (within experimental error) can account for experimental molecular weight data for both conventional radical polymerization and NMP under conditions where chain transfer to solvent is a significant end‐forming event. In NMP (and other controlled/living radical polymerization systems), chain transfer to solvent is manifested as the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) going through a maximum value with increasing monomer conversion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of new 7‐membered diazepanone alkoxyamines [2,2,7,7‐tetramethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 3 ) and 2,7‐diethyl‐2,3,7‐trimethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 8 )] through the Beckmann rearrangement of piperidin‐4‐one alkoxyamines was developed. Both 3 and 8 were evaluated as initiators and regulators for the nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate. 8 , a sterically highly hindered alkoxyamine readily available as a crystalline solid, allowed the fast and controlled polymerization and preparation of polymers with low polydispersity indices (1.2–1.4) up to a degree of polymerization of about 100. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The background to the formation of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) polymer group is discussed. In particular, the challenges of working with high‐conversion polymerization, as found in commercial systems, and the need to explain variations in polymer properties led to important advances in the theory of radical polymerization and control over both the initiation and termination steps. Studies on the fate of the macromonomer, formed in termination by disproportionation, led to an early form of addition/fragmentation now known as reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer, whereas detailed studies on initiation pathways using nitroxide trapping led to nitroxide‐mediated living radical polymerization. These studies contributed to the renaissance in free‐radical polymerization studies. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 5748–5764, 2005  相似文献

Summary: A low‐molar‐mass poly(acrylic acid) with a narrow molar‐mass distribution, prepared by SG1 nitroxide‐mediated controlled free‐radical polymerization, was subjected to end‐group analysis to confirm its living nature. 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the SG1‐based alkoxyamine end group. Furthermore, chain extension with styrene and n‐butyl acrylate demonstrated the ability of the homopolymer to initiate the polymerization of a second block. These results open the door to the synthesis of poly(acrylic acid)‐based block copolymers by direct nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of acrylic acid.

The ester‐functional alkoxyamine 2,2‐dimethyl‐3‐(1‐(4‐(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)ethoxy)‐4‐(4‐(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)‐3‐azapentane ( 2 ) was efficiently synthesized for use as a functional initiator in nitroxide‐mediated polymerization. Two equivalents of 1‐(4‐(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)ethyl radical were added across the double bond of 2‐methyl‐2‐nitrosopropane to form alkoxyamine 2 , which was found to control the polymerization of styrene, isoprene, and n‐butyl acrylate. The ester moieties were hydrolyzed for subsequent esterification with 1‐pyrenebutanol to form a dipyrene‐labeled initiator that was used to probe nitroxide end‐group fidelity after styrene polymerization. High retention of nitroxide was confirmed by UV‐vis studies over a range of monomer conversions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6342–6352, 2009  相似文献

Living radical polymerizations of diisopropyl fumarate (DiPF) are carried out to synthesize poly(diisopropyl fumarate) (PDiPF) as a rigid poly(substituted methylene) and its block copolymers combined with a flexible polyacrylate segment. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is suitable to obtain a high‐molecular‐weight PDiPF with well‐controlled molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and chain‐end structures, while organotellurium‐mediated living radical polymerization (TERP) and reversible chain transfer catalyzed polymerization (RTCP) give PDiPF with controlled chain structures under limited polymerization conditions. In contrast, controlled polymerization for the production of high‐molecular‐weight and well‐defined PDiPF is not achieved by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP). The block copolymers consisting of rigid poly(substituted methylene) and flexible polyacrylate segments are synthesized by the RAFT polymerization. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Living radical polymerization of 2‐methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) was achieved by single‐electron‐transfer/degenerative transfer mediated living radical polymerization (SET‐DTLRP) in water catalyzed by sodium dithionate. The poly(2‐methoxyethyl acrylate) is an amphiphilic polymer with a hydrophobic part (polyethylene chain) and a mildly hydrophilic tail. The plots of number‐average molecular weight versus conversion and ln{[M]0/[M]} versus time are linear, indicating a controlled polymerization. This method leads to the preparation of α,ω‐di(iodo) poly(2‐methoxyethyl acrylate)s (α,ω‐di(iodo)PMEA) macroinitiators that can be further functionalized. The molecular weight distributions were determined using a combination of three detectors (TriSEC): right‐angle light scattering (RALLS), a differential viscometer (DV) and refractive index (RI). The method studied in this work represents a possible route to prepare well‐tailored macromolecules made of 2‐methoxyethyl acrylate (biocompatible material) in an environmentally friendly reaction medium. To the best of our knowledge there is no previous report dealing with the synthesis of PMEA by any LRP approach in aqueous medium. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Malononitrile (MN), trifluoroacetic acid anhydride, acetylacetone, acetoacetic ester, and diethyl malonate have been identified as novel rate‐accelerating additives for nitroxide‐mediated living free‐radical polymerization. Among these additives, MN has the greatest accelerating effect. Adding MN at an MN/2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐oxyl (TEMPO) molar ratio of 4.0 results in a nearly 20 times higher rate of polymerization of styrene (St), and adding MN at an MN/TEMPO molar ratio of 2.5 results in a nearly 15 times higher rate of copolymerization of St and methyl methacrylate. The polymerization of St proceeds in a living fashion, as indicated by the increase in the molecular weight with time and conversion and the relatively low polydispersity. The polymerization rate of St is so quick that the conversion reaches 70% within 1 h at 125 °C when the molar ratio of MN to TEMPO is 4:1. Moreover, the reaction temperature can be reduced to 110 °C. A possible explanation for this effect is that the formation of hydrogen bonds between the MN and TEMPO moiety weakens the C? ON bond at the end of the polymer chain. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
