Stability of compressible three-dimensional boundary layers on a swept wing model is studied within the framework of the linear theory. The analysis based on the approximation of local self-similarity of the mean flow was performed within the Falkner-Skan-Cooke solution extended to compressible flows. The calculated characteristics of stability for a subsonic boundary layer are found to agree well with the measured results. In the case of a supersonic boundary layer, the results calculated for a Mach number M = 2 are also in good agreement with the measured spanwise scales of nonstationary vortices of the secondary flow. The calculated growth rates of disturbances, however, are substantially different from the measured values. This difference can be attributed to a high initial amplitude of disturbances generated in the experiment, which does not allow the linear stability theory to be applied. The evolution of natural disturbances with moderate amplitudes is fairly well predicted by the theory. The effect of compressibility on crossflow instability modes is demonstrated to be insignificant. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 3–14, March–April, 2008.

Nonlinear interactions of the two-dimensional(2D) second mode with oblique modes are studied numerically in a Mach 6.0 flat-plate boundary layer, focusing on its selective enhancement effect on amplification of different oblique waves. Evolution of oblique modes with various frequencies and spanwise wavenumbers in the presence of 2D second mode is simulated successively, using a modified parabolized stability equation(PSE) method, which is able to simulate interaction of two modes with different frequencies efficiently. Numerical results show that oblique modes in a broad band of frequencies and spanwise wavenumbers can be enhanced by the finite amplitude 2D second mode instability wave. The enhancement effect is accomplished by interaction of the 2D second mode, the oblique mode, and a forced mode with difference frequency. Two types of oblique modes are found to be more amplified, i.e., oblique modes with frequency close to that of the 2D second mode and low-frequency first mode oblique waves. Each of them may correspond to one type of transition routes found in transition experiments. The spanwise wavenumber of the oblique wave preferred by the nonlinear interaction is also determined by numerical simulations.

Effect of a two-dimensional smooth hump on linear instability of hypersonic boundary layer is studied by using parabolized stability equations. Linear evolution of mode S over a hump is analyzed for Mach 4.5 and 5.92 flat plate and Mach 7.1 sharp cone boundary layers. Mean flow for stability analysis is obtained by solving the parabolized Navier–Stokes equations. Hump with height smaller than local boundary layer thickness is considered. The case of flat plate and sharp cone without the hump are also studied to provide comparable data. For flat plate boundary layers, destabilization and stabilization effect is confirmed for hump located at upstream and downstream of synchronization point, respectively. Results of parametric studies to examine the effect of hump height, location, etc., are also given. For sharp cone boundary layer, stabilization influence of hump is also identified for a specific range of frequency. Stabilization influence of hump on convective instability of mode S is found to be a possible cause of previous experimental observations of delaying transition in hypersonic boundary layers.

The three-dimensional transition to turbulence in the transonic flow around a NACA0012 wing of constant spanwise section has been analysed at zero incidence and within the Reynolds number range [3000, 10000], by performing the direct numerical simulation. The successive stages of the 2D and 3D transition beyond the first bifurcation have been identified. A 2D study has been carried out near the threshold concerning the appearance of the first bifurcation that is the von-Kármán instability. The critical Mach number associated with this flow transition has been evaluated. Three other successive stages have been detected as the Mach number further increases in the range [0.3, 0.99]. Concerning the 3D transition of this nominally 2D flow configuration, the amplification of the secondary instability has been studied within the Reynolds number range of [3000, 5000]. The formation of counter-rotating longitudinal vorticity cells and the consequent appearance of a large-scale spanwise wavelength have been obtained downstream of the trailing-edge shock. A vortex dislocation pattern is developed as a consequence of the shock-vortex interaction near the trailing edge. The subcritical nature of the present 3D transition to turbulence has been proven by means of the DNS amplification signals and the Landau global oscillator model.

The stability properties of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) compressible flows over a rectangular cavity with length-to-depth ratio of \(L/D=6\) are analyzed at a free-stream Mach number of \(M_\infty =0.6\) and depth-based Reynolds number of \(Re_D=502\). In this study, we closely examine the influence of three-dimensionality on the wake mode that has been reported to exhibit high-amplitude fluctuations from the formation and ejection of large-scale spanwise vortices. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) and bi-global stability analysis are utilized to study the stability characteristics of the wake mode. Using the bi-global stability analysis with the time-averaged flow as the base state, we capture the global stability properties of the wake mode at a spanwise wavenumber of \(\beta =0\). To uncover spanwise effects on the 2D wake mode, 3D DNS are performed with cavity width-to-depth ratio of \(W/D=1\) and 2. We find that the 2D wake mode is not present in the 3D cavity flow with \(W/D=2\), in which spanwise structures are observed near the rear region of the cavity. These 3D instabilities are further investigated via bi-global stability analysis for spanwise wavelengths of \(\lambda /D=0.5{-}2.0\) to reveal the eigenspectra of the 3D eigenmodes. Based on the findings of 2D and 3D global stability analysis, we conclude that the absence of the wake mode in 3D rectangular cavity flows is due to the release of kinetic energy from the spanwise vortices to the streamwise vortical structures that develops from the spanwise instabilities.

The laminar-turbulent transition in boundary-layer flows is often affected by wall imperfections, because the latter may interact with either the freestream perturbations or the oncoming boundary-layer instability modes, leading to a modification of the accumulation of the normal modes. The present paper particularly focuses on the latter mechanism in a transonic boundary layer, namely, the effect of a two-dimensional(2 D) roughness element on the oncoming Tollmien-Schlichting(T-S) modes when they propagate through the region of the rapid mean-flow distortion induced by the roughness. The wave scattering is analyzed by adapting the local scattering theory developed for subsonic boundary layers(WU, X. S. and DONG, M. A local scattering theory for the effects of isolated roughness on boundary-layer instability and transition: transmission coefficient as an eigenvalue. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 794, 68–108(2006)) to the transonic regime, and a transmission coefficient is introduced to characterize the effect of the roughness. In the sub-transonic regime, in which the Mach number is close to, but less than, 1, the scattering system reduces to an eigenvalue problem with the transmission coefficient being the eigenvalue; while in the super-transonic regime, in which the Mach number is slightly greater than 1, the scattering system becomes a high-dimensional group of linear equations with the transmission coefficient being solved afterward. In the largeReynolds-number asymptotic theory, the K′arm′an-Guderley parameter is introduced to quantify the effect of the Mach number. A systematical parametric study is carried out,and the dependence of the transmission coefficient on the roughness shape, the frequency of the oncoming mode, and the K′arm′an-Guderley parameter is provided.

The 3D receptivity of 2D laminar boundary layers to localized surface vibrations has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically for two types of basic flow: (i) the Blasius boundary layer and (ii) a boundary layer with a negative streamwise pressure gradient (Hartree parameter βH=0.10). For the boundary-layer excitation, a specially designed surface vibrator was used. The development of the excited wave-trains was measured by means of hot-wire anemometry and decomposed into oblique normal Tollmien–Schlichting-modes. The initial spectra of the excited perturbations at the position of the vibrator was obtained by two different techniques. The first used an additional source which was mounted upstream and provided the amplification curves for the instability modes in the vicinity of the vibrator, the second was based on linear stability calculations. The receptivity coefficients were defined as the ratio of the initial wavenumber spectrum of the excited TS-waves and the corresponding resonant spectrum of the surface vibrations. They were determined for each fixed frequency as a function of the spanwise wavenumber. The boundary value problem for the disturbance produced by the vibrating membrane was solved theoretically for the same conditions as in the experiments in the framework of the classical hydrodynamic stability theory. The Navier–Stokes equations were linearized around a incompressible basic flow described by a solution of the Falkner–Skan equation. Comparisons of the theoretical and experimental results on the 3D receptivity show good quantitative agreement. It is concluded that the favorable pressure gradient increases the boundary-layer receptivity to surface vibrations.

A numerical study has been undertaken to investigate the nature of inviscid instability of the three-dimensional compressible boundary layer flow due to a rotating disk. The compressible Rayleigh equation is integrated using a spectral Chebyshev-collocation method together with a fourth-order Runge–Kutta integrator. In the context of spatio-temporal stability analysis, the singularities of the resulting dispersion relation are determined and the ones that satisfy the Briggs–Bers pinching criterion have been selected. In certain finite parameter regions of eigenvalues (wave numbers and wave angles, for instance) it is found that by varying the Mach number, absolute instability occurs in the compressible boundary layer on a rotating disk. The range corresponding to the incompressible flow case given in Lingwood (1995) (ε between 14.615° and 38.114°) is verified. The results of Cole (1995) are also verified. The overall effect of compressibility is to reduce the extent of absolute instability at higher Mach numbers. The effect of heating the wall is to enhance the absolute instability properties, however, cooling the wall is found to decrease greatly the region of absolute instability regime for the range of Mach numbers studied. It is also shown in this study that for non-insulated walls a direct spatial resonance of the eigenmodes is possible and this raises the possibility of large local algebraic growth of perturbations being important in some instances. The paper presents a review of results of some recent (mainly experimental) studies devoted to a quantitative investigation of the problem of receptivity of the 2D and 3D boundary layers with respect to various 3D (in general) external perturbations. The paper concentrates on the mechanisms of excitation and development of stationary and travelling instability modes in a 3D boundary layer on a swept wing, as well as in 2D boundary layers including the Blasius flow and a self-similar boundary layer with an adverse pressure gradient. In particular, the following problems of the boundary-layer receptivity are discussed: (i) receptivity to localized 3D surface roughness, (ii) receptivity to localized 3D surface vibrations, (iii) acoustic receptivity in presence of 3D surface roughness, and (iv) acoustic receptivity in the presence of 3D surface vibrations. All experiments described in the paper were conducted using controlled disturbance conditions with the help of simulation of the stationary and non-stationary perturbations by means of several disturbance generators. This approach gives us the possibility to obtain quantitative results which are independent of any uncontrolled background perturbations of the flow and the experimental model. In contrast to the data obtained at “natural” environmental conditions these results can be directly compared with calculations without any significant assumptions about the physical nature of the disturbances under investigation. The complex (amplitude and phase) coefficients of the boundary-layer receptivity to external perturbations, obtained as functions of the disturbance frequency and the spanwise wavenumber (or the wave propagation angle), represent the main results of the experiments described. These results can be used for the evaluation of the initial amplitudes and phases of the instability modes generated by various external perturbations, as well as for quantitative verification of linear receptivity theories. Several examples of the comparison of experimental results with calculations are also presented in this paper. A brief analysis of the state-of-art in the field is performed and some general properties of different receptivity mechanisms are discussed.

Boundary layers that develop over a body in fluid flow are in most cases three-dimensional owing to the spin, yaw, or surface curvature of the body. Therefore, the study of three-dimensional (3D) boundary-layer transition is essential to work in practical aerodynamics. The present investigation is concerned with the problem of 3D boundary layers over a yawed body. A yawed cylinder model that represents the leading edge portion of a swept wing and the mechanism of crossflow instability are investigated in detail using hot-wire velocimetry and a flow visualization technique. As a result, traveling disturbances having frequencies f1 and f2, which differ by about one order of magnitude, are detected in the transition region. The phase velocities and directions of travel of those disturbances are measured. Results for the low-frequency disturbance f1 show qualitative coincidence with results numerically predicted for a crossflow unsteady disturbance. Nameley, F1 travels nearly spanwise to the yawed cylinder and very close to the cylinder wall. The results for the high-frequency disturbance f2 good agreement with the existing experimental results. The 2 disturbance is found to be the high-frequency inflectional secondary instability that appears in 3D boundary layer transition in general. A two-stage transition process, where stationary crossflow vortices appear as the primary instability and a traveling inflectional disturbance is generated as a secondary instability, was observed. Secondary instability seems to play a major role in turbulent transition.

Turbulent boundary layers with free-stream temperatures between 300°K and 3000°K, and wall temperature 300°K is studied numerically for air at 1 bar. Solution is started at one plane for a laminar, local similar boundary layer by solving differential equations by Runge-Kutta method. Velocity and enthalpy profiles are obtained at downstream planes by an implicit finite-difference iterative procedure. Effects of free-stream Mach number, sudden acceleration or deceleration, surface roughness, and uniform blowing or suction through the wall are studied and numerical results are compared with those available in open literatures.

A parametric study is presented for the incompressible, zero-pressure-gradient flat-plate boundary layer perturbed by streamwise vortices. The vortices are placed near the leading edge and model the vortices induced by miniature vortex generators (MVGs), which consist in a spanwise-periodic array of small winglet pairs. The introduction of MVGs has been experimentally proved to be a successful passive flow control strategy for delaying laminar-turbulent transition caused by Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves. The counter-rotating vortex pairs induce non-modal, transient growth that leads to a streaky boundary layer flow. The initial intensity of the vortices and their wall-normal distances to the plate wall are varied with the aim of finding the most effective location for streak generation and the effect on the instability characteristics of the perturbed flow. The study includes the solution of the three-dimensional, stationary, streaky boundary layer flows by using the boundary region equations, and the three-dimensional instability analysis of the resulting basic flows by using the plane-marching parabolized stability equations. Depending on the initial circulation and positioning of the vortices, planar TS waves are stabilized by the presence of the streaks, resulting in a reduction in the region of instability and shrink of the neutral stability curve. For a fixed maximum streak amplitude below the threshold for secondary instability (SI), the most effective wall-normal distance for the formation of the streaks is found to also offer the most stabilization of TS waves. By setting a maximum streak amplitude above the threshold for SI, sinuous shear layer modes become unstable, as well as another instability mode that is amplified in a narrow region near the vortex inlet position.

Extension of the en-method from two-dimensional to three-dimensional boundary-layer flows has not been straightforward. Confusion has centred on whether to use temporal or spatial stability theories, conversion between the two approaches, and the choice of integration path. The aim of this study is to clarify the confusion about the direction and magnitude of maximum growth in convectively unstable three-dimensional non-parallel boundary layers. To this end, the time-asymptotic response of the boundary layer to an impulsive point excitation is considered. Since all frequencies and all wavenumbers are excited by an impulsive point source, the most amplified component of the response is equivalent to the result of maximizing the growth over arbitrary choices of harmonic point excitation; the standard en-approach. The impulse response is calculated using a spatial steepest-descent method, which is distinct from the earlier Cebeci–Stewartson method. It is necessary to allow both time and spanwise distance to become complex during integration, but with the constraint that both are real at the end point. This method has been applied to the two-dimensional Blasius boundary layer, for which validation of the method is more straightforward, and also to a three-dimensional Falkner–Skan–Cooke (with non-zero pressure gradient and sweep) boundary layer. Dimensional frequencies and spanwise wavenumbers of propagating components are kept constant (although not necessarily real), as is physically relevant to steady flows with spatial inhomogeneity in the chordwise direction only. With this method a spatial approach is taken without having to make a priori choices about the value of disturbance frequency or wavenumber. Further, purely by choosing a downstream observation point, it is possible to find the maximum-amplitude component directly without having to calculate the entire impulse response (or wave packet). If the flow is susceptible to more than one convective instability mode, provided the modes are separated in the frequency–wavenumber space, separate n-factors can be calculated for each mode. Wave-packet propagation in the Ekman layer (a strictly parallel three-dimensional boundary layer) is also discussed to draw comparisons between the conditions for maximum growth in parallel and non-parallel boundary layers.

Cartesian grid with cut‐cell method has drawn attention of CFD researchers owing to its simplicity. However, it suffers from the accuracy near the boundary of objects especially when applied to viscous flow analysis. Hybrid grid consisting of Cartesian grid in the background, body‐fitted layer near the object, and transition layer connecting the two is an interesting alternative. In this paper, we propose a robust method to generate hybrid grid in two‐dimensional (2D) and three‐dimensional (3D) space for viscous flow analysis. In the first step, body‐fitted layer made of quadrangles (in 2D) or prisms (in 3D) is created near the object's boundary by extruding front nodes with a speed function depending on the minimum normal curvature obtained by quadric surface fitting. To solve global interferences effectively, a level set method is used to find candidates of colliding cells. Then, axis‐aligned Cartesian grid (quadtree in 2D or octree in 3D) is filled in the rest of the domain. Finally, the gap between body‐fitted layer and Cartesian grid is connected by transition layer composed of triangles (in 2D) or tetrahedrons (in 3D). Mesh in transition layer is initially generated by constrained Delaunay triangulation from sampled points based on size function and is further optimized to provide smooth connection. Our approach to automatic hybrid grid generation has been tested with many models including complex geometry and multi‐body cases, showing robust results in reasonable time.
