We show that good quality single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes can be grown on CMOS-compatible metal electrodes at ambient room temperature using highly localised catalyst heating at nanostructured electrodes. The method is relatively straightforward and allows considerable flexibility in the kinds of devices that can be fabricated as well as allowing CVD nanotube growth to take place in the close vicinity of temperature-sensitive materials and devices. In this work we report laterally aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) by an electric field during growth. The MWNTs were selectively grown between lateral sides of the catalytic metals on predefined electrodes by chemical-vapor deposition. The electric field distribution for various geometries was simulated using Maxwell 2D simulation in order to realize better alignment of laterally grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The experimental results show that the electric field direction at the vicinity of catalyst and nanotubes-substrate interactions are principal factor in aligning CNTs laterally.  相似文献

Multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays were grown by catalytic thermal decomposition of acetylene, over Fe-catalyst deposited on Si-wafer in the temperature range 700-750 °C. The growth parameters were optimized to obtain dense arrays of multiwalled CNTs of uniform diameter. The vertical cross-section of the grown nanotube arrays reveals a quasi-vertical alignment of the nanotubes. The effect of varying the thickness of the catalyst layer and the effect of increasing the growth duration on the morphology and distribution of the grown nanotubes were studied. A scotch-tape test to check the strength of adhesion of the grown CNTs to the Si-substrate surface reveals a strong adhesion between the grown nanotubes and the substrate surface. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of the grown CNTs shows that the grown CNTs are multiwalled nanotubes with a bamboo structure, and follow the base-growth mechanism.  相似文献

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have been synthesized from botanical hydrocarbons: Turpentine oil and Eucalyptus oil on Si(100) substrate using Fe catalyst by simple spray pyrolysis method at 700°C and at atmospheric pressure. The as-grown carbon nanotubes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and Raman spectroscopy. It was observed that nanotubes grown from turpentine oil have better degree of graphitization and field emission performance than eucalyptus oil grown carbon nanotubes. The turpentine oil and eucalyptus oil grown carbon nanotubes indicated that the turn-on field of about 1.7 and 1.93 V/μm, respectively, at 10 μA/cm2. The threshold field was observed to be about 2.13 and 2.9 V/μm at 1 mA/cm2 of nanotubes grown from turpentine oil and eucalyptus oil respectively. Moreover, turpentine oil grown carbon nanotubes show higher current density in relative to eucalyptus oil grown carbon nanotubes. The maximum current density of 15.3 mA/cm2 was obtained for ∼3 V/μm corresponding to the nanotubes grown from turpentine oil. The improved field emission performance was attributed to the enhanced crystallinity, fewer defects, and greater length of turpentine oil grown carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

We report first-principles calculations of conductance of carbon nanotubes between metallic electrodes. The electronic states are calculated using a numerical atomic orbital basis set in the framework of the density functional theory, and the conductance is calculated using the Green's function method. We show transmission spectra of carbon nanotubes connected to electrodes and reveal the contact effect of electrodes on the transport properties of nanotubes.  相似文献

The nucleation and rapid growth of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were explored by pulsed-laser assisted chemical vapor deposition (PLA-CVD). A special high-power, Nd:YAG laser system with tunable pulse width (>0.5 ms) was implemented to rapidly heat (>3×104°C/s) metal catalyst-covered substrates to different growth temperatures for very brief (sub-second) and controlled time periods as measured by in situ optical pyrometry. Utilizing growth directly on transmission electron microscopy grids, exclusively SWNTs were found to grow under rapid heating conditions, with a minimum nucleation time of >0.1 s. By measuring the length of nanotubes grown by single laser pulses, extremely fast growth rates (up to 100 microns/s) were found to result from the rapid heating and cooling induced by the laser treatment. Subsequent laser pulses were found not to incrementally continue the growth of these nanotubes, but instead activate previously inactive catalyst nanoparticles to grow new nanotubes. Localized growth of nanotubes with variable density was demonstrated through this process and was applied for the reliable direct-write synthesis of SWNTs onto pre-patterned, catalyst-covered metal electrodes for the synthesis of SWNT field-effect transistors.  相似文献

Single-wall carbon nanotubes were synthesized on specified parts of oxidized silicon substrates by single acetylene burst CVD and studied with high-resolution scanning electron and scanning probe micro-scopes. The resistance of individual nanotubes and nanotube series was measured using devices fabricated by the deposition of Pd and Pd/Al electrodes on the obtained single-wall nanotubes. The contact potential difference between Pd electrodes and carbon nanotubes was measured in the Kelvin mode of a scanning probe microscope.  相似文献

Through floating catalyst chemical vapour deposition(CVD) method,well-aligned isolated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and their bundles were deposited on the metal electrodes patterned on the SiO2/Si surface under ac electric fields at relatively low temperature(280℃). It was indicated that SWCNTs were effectively aligned under ac electric fields after they had just grown in the furnace. The time for a SWCNT to be aligned in the electric field and the effect of gas flow were estimated. Polarized Raman scattering was performed to characterize the aligned structure of SWCNTs. This method would be very useful for the controlled fabrication and preparation of SWCNTs in practical applications.  相似文献

We have studied the resistance of single-wall carbon nanotubes measured in a four-point configuration with noninvasive voltage electrodes. The voltage drop is detected using multiwalled carbon nanotubes while the current is injected through nanofabricated Au electrodes. The resistance at room temperature is shown to be linear with the length as expected for a classical resistor. This changes at cryogenic temperature; the four-point resistance then depends on the resistance at the Au-tube interfaces and can even become negative due to quantum-interference effects.  相似文献

New aspects on pulsed laser deposition of aligned carbon nanotubes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have grown carbon nanotubes (CNT) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at 1000 °C in Ar atmosphere. A Nd/YAG laser was used for irradiation of a graphite target containing Ni and Co rods. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that “closed” carbon nanotubes were grown between clusters of metallic particles, so that the individual nanotubes were arranged in parallel to each other forming a shape of “Rope-Bridge”. The nanotubes structure was analyzed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and their type was found to be of MWNT, containing about five SWNT. Total diameter was 5-20 nm and their length was about 1 μm. High homogeneous distribution carbon nanotubes were grown and different structures were observed such as well-aligned carbon nanotubes, bamboo-like and Y-junction carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

This paper provides an overview of recent research developments in the field of nanoelectronics with organic materials such as carbon nanotubes and DNA-templated nanowires. Carbon nanotubes and gold electrodes are chemically functionalized in order to contact carbon nanotubes by self-assembly. The transport properties of these nanotubes are dominated by charging effects and display clear Coulomb blockade behaviour. A different approach towards nanoscale electronics is based on the molecular recognition properties of biomolecules such as DNA. As an example, DNA is stretched between electrodes using a molecular combing technique. A two-step metallization procedure leads to the formation of highly conductive gold nanowires.  相似文献

Superconducting properties of carbon nanotubes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Metallic single wall carbon nanotubes have attracted much interest as 1D quantum wires combining a low carrier density and a high mobility. It was believed for a long time that low temperature transport was exclusively dominated by the existence of unscreened Coulomb interactions leading to an insulating behavior at low temperature. However experiments have also shown evidence of superconductivity in carbon nanotubes. We distinguish two fundamentally different physical situations. When carbon nanotubes are connected to superconducting electrodes, they exhibit proximity induced superconductivity with supercurrents which strongly depend on the transmission of the electrodes. On the other hand intrinsic superconductivity was also observed in suspended ropes of carbon nanotubes and recently in doped individual tubes. These experiments indicate the presence of attractive interactions in carbon nanotubes which overcome Coulomb repulsion at low temperature, and enables investigation of superconductivity in a 1D limit never explored before. The contacts of single carbon nanotubes and bundles of carbon nanotubes with superconducting and metallic electrodes are investigated in order to create bolometers and electron coolers. Tunneling contacts of the carbon nanotubes with aluminum electrodes are obtained. The current-voltage characteristics of junctions are analyzed for temperatures from room temperature to 300 mK. The resistance of individual nanotubes is primarily determined by defects and is too large for applications. The use of the bundles of carbon nanotubes makes it possible to considerably reduce the resistance of the bolometer, which is determined by a small number of conducting tubes with good tunneling contacts with the electrodes. The energy gap is equal to hundreds and tens of millivolt in the former and latter cases, respectively. Structures containing bundles of carbon nanotubes can be described in a model with a Schottky barrier. The samples with bundles of carbon nanotubes exhibit the bolometric response to external high-frequency radiation at a frequency of 110 GHz with an amplitude up to 100 μV and a temperature voltage response to 0.4 mV/K.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are grown by arc discharge method in a controlled methane environment. The arc discharge is produced between two graphite electrodes at the ambient pressures of 100 tort, 300 torr, and 500 torr. Arc plasma parameters such as temperature and density are estimated to investigate the influences of the ambient pressure and the contributions of the ambient pressure to the growth and the structure of the nanotubes. The plasma temperature and density are observed to increase with the increase in the methane ambient pressure. The samples of MWCNT synthesized at different ambient pressures are analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. An increase in the growth of MWCNT and a decrease in the inner tube diameter are observed with the increase in the methane ambient pressure.  相似文献

Chemical functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes with redox mediators, namely, toluidine blue and thionin have been carried out and the performance of graphite electrode modified with functionalized carbon nanotubes is described. Mechanical immobilization of functionalized single-walled nanotube (SWNT) on graphite electrode was achieved by gently rubbing the electrode surface on carbon nanotubes supported on a glass slide. The electrochemical behaviour of the modified electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The SWNT-modified electrodes showed excellent electrocatalytic effect for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. A decrease in overvoltage was observed as well as an enhanced peak current compared to a bare graphite electrode for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The catalytic current was found to be directly proportional to the amount of hydrogen peroxide taken.  相似文献

Several methods used for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes have been developed in the last decade. The preparation techniques used, and their associated parameters, have an ultimate effect on the structure of the resulting nanotubes. Consequently, it is of great interest to compare the structure of carbon nanotubes synthesized by different techniques. We investigated a range of nanotubes of different origin by scanning probe microscopy (TM-AFM), and by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Three different types of nanotubes have been investigated: commercial SWNT and MWNT, MWNT (synthesized using a CCVD process) and its SiO2 coated variant, and nanostructures produced using an electrochemical method. A preparative technique is described and different tube parameters are measured. The quality of coated MWNT-s is investigated and nano-structured rings are revealed in samples obtained by electrolysis of molten salts on graphite electrodes.  相似文献

We report here the results of the first resonance Raman study on single MoS2 and WS2 nanotubes and microtubes synthesized by chemical transport reaction. These multiwall tubes represent the longest known inorganic nanotubes grown up to several millimetre lengths with diameters ranging from less than ten nanometers to several micrometers. The nanotubes grown at nearly equilibrium conditions contain extremely low density of structural defects. The selected area diffraction on the thick-wall nanotubes revealing the rhombohedral (3R) stacking, otherwise stable at elevated pressure above 4 GPa, provides indirect evidence of the presence of strain incorporated into the nanotube wall. Results are compared with phonon spectra of plate-like crystals of the same compound. The observed up-shift of Raman peaks in the tubes spectra is explained by the presence of strain. Well preserved crystal structure of tubes is confirmed by comparison with phonon spectra of nanostructured materials from literature.  相似文献

Carbon nanosheets were synthesized by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method on carbon nanotubes substrate which was treated by hydrogen plasma. The results showed that the diameters of carbon nanotubes first got thick and then “petal-like” carbon nanosheets were grown on the outer wall of carbon nanotubes. The diameters of carbon nanotubes without and with carbon nanosheets were 100-150 and 300-500 nm, respectively. Raman spectrum indicated the graphite structure of carbon nanotubes/carbon nanosheets. The hydrogen plasma treatment and reaction time greatly affected the growth and density of carbon nanosheets. Based on above results, carbon nanosheets/carbon nanotubes probably have important applications as cold cathode materials and electrode materials.  相似文献
