By controlling the morphology of holographic polymer-dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs), highly aligned FLC domains are obtained for diffractive optical applications. Rapid, thresholdless switching is observed for various grating pitch sizes between approximately 3 and approximately 12 microm. A simple phenomenological model is presented encompassing a distribution of domain sizes and an effective field that stabilizes the FLC domains to reflect the observed thresholdless switching and optical behavior. 相似文献

We report a polarization beam splitter that uses polarization gratings written onto a zero-twist nematic liquid-crystal display. We show three configurations. The first two separate the diffracted light into two orthogonally polarized orders that are either linearly or circularly polarized. In the third configuration, we demonstrate a novel case for which the output is separated into two nonorthonormal polarization states. Photorefractive diffraction gratings were studied in cells of homeotropically aligned pentyl-cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal. These holographic gratings were induced by the simultaneous and nonsimultaneous application of dc and coherent optical electric fields. The observed behavior was consistent with a predominantly surface-mediated photorefractive effect. Beam coupling was observed in all cases and led to a model involving screened and unscreened interfacial trapped charges driving a modulation of the easy axis. Holographic gratings could be switched on and off by the application of a small voltage. 相似文献

We report on the photorefractive effect induced by a polarization grating in the presence of dc voltage in a dye-doped liquid-crystal (DDLC) film. The writing beams are two orthogonally (left- and right-circularly) polarized laser beams that create a spatially polarization-modulated interference field with constant intensity. The photorefractivity is ascribed to the absorption anisotropy of the azo dye. The unique dichroism of a DDLC cell causes a spatial variation in the absorption of light in response to a polarization-modulated interference field. Such a variation establishes a space-charge field in the presence of dc voltage, generating photorefractivity. Two-beam couplings were also verified and measured dynamically during the formation of the photorefractive grating in this study. 相似文献

We report the development of photosensitive polymeric optical fibers for gratings. The fiber is made of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate, and its core is made of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, and benzyl methacrylate (90/4/6 molar ratio) doped with trans-4-stilbenemethanol. Ultraviolet absorption and photoinduced refractive-index change of the doped core system are presented, and its photosensitivity is demonstrated by fabrication of Bragg gratings in the core of the fiber by use of a pulse laser at 325 nm. 相似文献

In this paper we present a novel configuration of an NPR mode-locked Er-doped laser. This new optical setup uses voltage controlled LC cells to replace standard retarders (quarter-and half-waveplates) inside the laser cavity. Using this novel, mechanical-adjustment-free setup a mode-locking was obtained with sub-500 fs pulse duration and an average power exceeding 40 mW. Presented results show that using simple LC cells, an optical layout of an NPR mode-locked laser can be greatly simplified. 相似文献

New fabrication method for anisotropic gratings formed in photocrosslinkable polymer liquid crystals
We present a new fabrication method, called two-step ultraviolet exposure, to prepare anisotropic gratings in photocrosslinkable polymer liquid crystal films. Using the controllability of the reorientation direction of mesogenic molecules, anisotropic phase gratings, in which the mesogenic molecules were periodically modulated in orthogonal directions, were prepared by the use of one grating photomask. The resultant gratings diffract the light and convert the polarization states at the same time, and have applications as diffraction optical devices. Photorefractive gratings with high grating resolution were observed in the 20 μm thick low-molar-mass nematic liquid crystal
(NLC) cell with a separate photoconductive (PC) poly(N-vinylcarbazole) layer. An orientational grating with a grating spacing of 1.9 μm was produced. It is believed that a space–charge
field with small fringe spacing forms in the PC layer and its evanescent component penetrates into the NLC layer. The penetrated
evanescent field drives the NLC to reorient, and consequently the orientational grating forms. The model indicates that the
modulated field exists in several hundred nanometers near the surface, and thus the orientational grating is not full of the
NLC film, which is consistent with the observed phenomena of the multiple diffractions. Besides, asymmetric two-beam coupling
of 11.2% was achieved for the grating with a grating spacing of 1.9 μm, and a net gain coefficient of larger than 62 cm−1 was obtained. 相似文献

Various amounts of vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMOS) have been added to the conventional grating formulation of transmission holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) based polyurethane acrylate (PUA). With the addition and increasing amount of VTMOS, contact angle of the film with LC and droplet size of LC monotonically increased, implying that VTMOS segments of the polymers are preferentially exposed to the surfaces and provided greater immiscibility with LC molecules giving rise to an increase in droplet size of LC. However, with VTMOS content over 6 wt%, droplets were coalesced to sizes for random scatterings to lower the off state diffraction efficiency below that of virgin PUA. VTMOS was essential to drive the film by lowering the anchoring strength. The operating voltage monotonically decreased with increasing VTMOS content with a minimum switching voltage of about 15 V with response time of about 8 ms. 相似文献

The diffraction and polarization properties of thick anisotropic holographic gratings recorded in polymer-dispersed liquid crystals are studied experimentally and theoretically. Such gratings are anisotropic and sensitive to temperature variations and also exhibit a strong dependence of the diffraction properties on the incident radiation polarization because of the presence of liquid-crystal molecules. The dependences of the diffraction efficiency and diffracted beam polarization orientation on the diffraction grating temperature and incident beam linear polarization are obtained for the case of Bragg incidence. The same dependences are derived using the known experimental temperature curves of the liquid crystal permittivity. The experimental data are in agreement with the theoretical calculations. The feasibility of controlling the diffraction characteristics of the grating in a wide temperature interval is demonstrated. 相似文献

We report the fabrication of efficient, buried diffraction gratings and micro-craters in bulk polystyrene using femtosecond laser direct writing technique. We recorded a maximum diffraction efficiency of 10% for a buried grating fabricated at 1 μJ energy, 1 mm/s speed, and a period of 30 μm. Buried micro-craters, with typical dimensions of ∼2 μm, were achieved at low energies and high scanning speeds. From the field emission scanning electron microscope studies, the observed emission is attributed as due to the inner surface modifications and the debris settled around the voids. The fabricated gratings subjected to heat treatment were tested for the diffraction efficiency and emission at different excitation wavelengths and the observed results are presented. Raman spectra collected from the femtosecond laser modified regions revealed the disappearance of few Raman modes at high peak intensities associated with incident Gaussian laser pulse. Potential applications of these luminescent micro-craters are highlighted. 相似文献

We propose an optical compensator configuration with switchable modes by combining the polymer stabilized liquid crystal (PSLC) technology with the novel electrode design. It could be applied to a fixed-focus lens module for providing the defocus compensation of an optical imaging system. The device has two operation modes that can be switched by the electrode connection and provide respective optical retardation effects. It was designed by using the optical simulation tool and fabricated by using the standard photolithographic processes, the liquid crystal (LC) cell assembly procedure, and the particular ultra-violet (UV) exposure steps. We demonstrate that low molar mass discotic liquid crystals can be used for holographic storage. Grating structures are optically induced and stored in the glassy state of the investigated liquid crystal. The formation of surface relief grating on dye-doped polymer film with the interface of nematic liquid crystals has been investigated by means of the holographic technique. The first-order diffraction efficiency of surface relief grating depends on the temperature and the orientation of molecular director in the interface of nematic liquid crystals. The diffraction efficiency is roughly independent of thermal fluctuations of molecular director in the most part of nematic temperature range and apparently drops near the transition temperature. The morphology of surface relief grating demonstrates that the surface modulation is larger for molecular director parallel to the groove direction. The experimental result also shows that the first-order diffraction efficiency is dependent on the surface modulation of surface relief grating. 相似文献

To establish optimal processing conditions for direct write fabrication of diffractive optical elements such as gratings, waveguides, lenses, we have investigated the effect of process parameters such as scan speed, numerical aperture (NA) of objective lens, pulse energy on the characteristics of the filament induced inside fused silica with a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser. The optimum process parameters were used to fabricate a number of Dammann gratings, 6×6 array, having different thicknesses and number of layers. The performance of these optical elements was evaluated by measuring their diffraction efficiencies. All gratings fabricated were strongly birefringent, the zero order spot with high intensity was not separated from the spot array, and the intensity distribution of 6×6 spot array exhibited some degree of nonuniformity. The single layer Dammann grating fabricated with a thickness of 80 μm attained a maximum diffraction efficiency of 38.8%. 相似文献

We present a simple yet efficient method to automatically fabricate the twisted nematic structure by one-step exposure on an empty glass cell coated with photocrosslinkable polymer liquid crystal (PCLC) films. The resultant photoalignment directions of two substrates can be orthogonal to each other by controlling the difference between the exposure energy for upper and lower PCLC films and the twisted nematic (TN) structure can be automatically fabricated. The vector grating liquid crystalline cell with TN structure was also fabricated by means of a developed method, and the diffraction properties were well explained by the theoretical calculation on the basis of Jones calculus. 相似文献
