The recovery of behaviour from its approximation over substructures is fraught with pathology. Here the extent is considered to which the behaviour of a continuous function on a locally compact Abelian group can be approximated by its behaviour on proper closed subgroups. Known results are summarised when the behaviour concerns integrability and the group is the circle; then boundedness and other limiting behaviour ‘at infinity’ are considered for more general groups. It is shown that if a continuous function is bounded on each proper closed subgroup of a connected locally compact Abelian group then it is bounded on the whole group. As befits this Festschrift, the techniques are predominantly topological. In passing we reflect on criteria for the difficult problem of identifying ‘substructures’ in Computer Science. 相似文献

We show an analogue of continued fractions in approximation to irrational numbers by rationals for Nevanlinna theory. The analogue is a sequence of points in the complex plane which approaches a given finite set of points and at a given rate in the sense of Nevanlinna theory.

Ideal class groups H(K) of algebraic quadratic function fields K are studied. Necessary and sufficient condition is given for the class group H(K) to contain a cyclic subgroup of any order n, which holds true for both real and imaginary fields K. Then several series of function fields K, including real, inertia imaginary, and ramified imaginary quadratic function fields, are given, for which the class groups H(K) are proved to contain cyclic subgroups of order n. 相似文献

Let k be an algebraically closed field, t∈Z?1, and let B be the Borel subgroup of GLt(k) consisting of upper-triangular matrices. Let Q be a parabolic subgroup of GLt(k) that contains B and such that the Lie algebra qu of the unipotent radical of Q is metabelian, i.e. the derived subalgebra of qu is abelian. For a dimension vector with , we obtain a parabolic subgroup P(d) of GLn(k) from B by taking upper-triangular block matrices with (i,j) block of size di×dj. In a similar manner we obtain a parabolic subgroup Q(d) of GLn(k) from Q. We determine all instances when P(d) acts on qu(d) with a finite number of orbits for all dimension vectors d. Our methods use a translation of the problem into the representation theory of certain quasi-hereditary algebras. In the finite cases, we use Auslander-Reiten theory to explicitly determine the P(d)-orbits; this also allows us to determine the degenerations of P(d)-orbits. 相似文献

Recently, M. Bestvina and N. Brady have exhibited groups that are of type but not finitely presented. We give explicit presentations for groups of the type considered by Bestvina-Brady. This leads to algebraic proofs of some of their results.

In this paper, we present a continued fraction product approximation for the Gamma function, via the Tri-gamma function. This approximation is fast in comparison with the recently discovered asymptotic series. We also establish the inequalities related to this approximation.
