A thin liquid sheet present in the shear layer of a compressible gas jet is investigated using an Eulerian approach with mixed-fluid treatment for the governing equations describing the gas–liquid two-phase flow system, where the gas is treated as fully compressible and the liquid as incompressible. The effects of different topological configurations, surface tension, gas pressure and liquid sheet thickness on the flow development of the gas–liquid two-phase flow system have been examined by direct solution of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations using highly accurate numerical schemes. The interface dynamics are captured using volume of fluid and continuum surface force models. The simulations show that the dispersion of the liquid sheet is dominated by vortical structures formed at the jet shear layer due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. The axisymmetric case is less vortical than its planar counterpart that exhibits formation of larger vortical structures and larger liquid dispersion. It has been identified that the vorticity development and the liquid dispersion in a planar configuration are increased at the absence of surface tension, which when present, tends to oppose the development of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. An opposite trend was observed for an axisymmetric configuration where surface tension tends to promote the development of vorticity. An increase in vorticity development and liquid dispersion was observed for increased liquid sheet thickness, while a decreasing trend was observed for higher gas pressure. Therefore surface tension, liquid sheet thickness and gas pressure factors all affect the flow vorticity which consequently affects the dispersion of the liquid.   相似文献

The effect of wavelength and relative velocity on the disturbed interface of two‐phase stratified regime is modeled and discussed. To analyze the stability, a small perturbation is imposed on the interface. Growth or decline of the disturbed wave, relative velocity, and surface tension with respect to time will be discussed numerically. Newly developed scheme applied to a two‐dimensional flow field and the governing Navier–Stokes equations in laminar regime are solved. Finite volume method together with non‐staggered curvilinear grid is a very effective approach to capture interface shape with time. Because of the interface shape, for any time advancement, a new grid is performed separately on each stratified field, liquid, and gas regime. The results are compared with the analytical characteristics method and one‐dimensional modeling. This comparison shows that solving the momentum equation including viscosity term leads to physically more realistic results. In addition, the newly developed method is capable of predicting two‐phase stratified flow behavior more precisely than one‐dimensional modeling. It was perceived that the surface tension has an inevitable role in dissipation of interface instability and convergence of the two‐phase flow model. In this article, an ALE finite element method to simulate the partial melting of a workpiece of metal is presented. The model includes the heat transport in both the solid and liquid part, fluid flow in the liquid phase by the Navier–Stokes equations, tracking of the melt interface solid/liquid by the Stefan condition, treatment of the capillary boundary accounting for surface tension effects and a radiative boundary condition. We show that an accurate treatment of the moving boundaries is crucial to resolve their respective influences on the flow field and thus on the overall energy transport correctly. This is achieved by a mesh‐moving method, which explicitly tracks the phase boundary and makes it possible to use a sharp interface model without singularities in the boundary conditions at the triple junction. A numerical example describing the welding of a thin‐steel wire end by a laser, where all aforementioned effects have to be taken into account, proves the effectiveness of the approach.Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A multiphase flow model has been established based on a moving particle semi‐implicit method. A surface tension model is introduced to the particle method to improve the numerical accuracy and stability. Several computational techniques are employed to simplify the numerical procedure and further improve the accuracy. A particle fraction multiphase flow model is developed and verified by a two‐phase Poiseuille flow. The multiphase surface tension model is discussed in detail, and an ethanol drop case is introduced to verify the surface tension model. A simple dam break is simulated to demonstrate the improvements with various modifications in particle method along with a new boundary condition. Finally, we simulate several bubble rising cases to show the capacity of this new model in simulating gas–liquid multiphase flow with large density ratio difference between phases. The comparisons among numerical results of mesh‐based model, experimental data, and the present model, indicate that the new multiphase particle method is acceptable in gas–liquid multiphase fluids simulation. In the present study the effects of surface tension on the growth and collapse stages of cavitation bubbles are studied individually for both spherical and nonspherical bubbles. The Gilmore equation is used to simulate the spherical bubble dynamics by considering mass diffusion and heat transfer. For the collapse stage near a rigid boundary, the Navier–Stokes and energy equations are used to simulate the flow domain, and the VOF method is adopted to track the interface between the gas and the liquid phases. Simulations are divided into two cases. In the first case, the collapse stage alone is considered in both spherical and nonspherical situations with different conditions of bubble radius and surface tension. According to the results, surface tension has no significant effects on the flow pattern and collapse rate. In the second case, both the growth and collapse stages of bubbles with different initial radii and surface tensions are considered. In this case surface tension affects the growth stage considerably and, as a result, the jet velocity and collapse time decrease with increasing surface tension coefficient. This effect is more significant for bubbles with smaller radii.  相似文献

The flow of a liquid in thin layers is one of the hydrodynamic problems of chemistry and heat engineering. The large surface area of films and their small thickness make it possible to accelerate thermal, diffusive, and chemical processes at the gas-liquid boundary.Theoretical studies of liquid flow in a vertical descending thin layer are presented in [1–4]. In this paper we study ascending wave flows of a liquid in a thin vertical layer in contact with a gas, i.e., flows in the direction opposite the action of the force due to gravity, with account for the action of the gas on the liquid surface. Such motions are encountered when oil is extracted from strata that are saturated with gas. At some distance from the stratum the oil and gas separate: the gas travels at high velocity inside the pipe, occupying a considerable portion of the pipe, and the liquid is displaced toward the pipe walls, forming a thin film. In certain cases a wave-like interface develops between the oil and gas that travels with a velocity greater than that of the liquid but less than the average gas velocity. Similar phenomena are observed in high velocity mass exchangers. We examine the effect of the gas for both laminar and turbulent flow.Studies that neglect the effect of the gas flow on the liquid show that for waves on the film surface whose lengths are considerably longer than the average thickness of the layer, the liquid motion in the film is described by boundary layer equations in which account is taken of the mass force, i.e., the force due to gravity. With some approximation, we can assume that in accounting for the effect of the gas on the liquid the liquid flow is described by these same equations.  相似文献

A hybrid particle‐mesh method was developed for efficient and accurate simulations of two‐phase flows. In this method, the main component of the flow is solved using the constrained interpolated profile/multi‐moment finite volumemethod; the two‐phase interface is rendered using the finite volume particle (FVP) method. The effect of surface tension is evaluated using the continuum surface force model. Numerical particles in the FVP method are distributed only on the surface of the liquid in simulating the interface between liquid and gas; these particles are used to determine the density of each mesh grid. An artificial term was also introduced to mitigate particle clustering in the direction of maximum compression and sparse discretization errors in the stretched direction. This enables accurate interface tracking without diminishing numerical efficiency. Two benchmark simulations are used to demonstrate the validity of the method developed and its numerical stability. In this study, we present a method to predict the droplet ejection in thermal inkjet printheads including the growth and collapse of a vapor bubble and refill of the firing chamber. The three‐dimensional Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a finite‐volume approach with a fixed Cartesian mesh. The piecewise‐linear interface calculation‐based volume‐of‐fluid method is employed to track and reconstruct the ink–air interface. A geometrical computation based on Lagrangian advection is used to compute the mass flux and advance the interface. A simple and efficient model for the bubble dynamics is employed to model the effect of ink vapor on the adjacent ink liquid. To solve the surface tension‐dominated flow accurately, a hierarchical curvature‐estimation method is proposed to adapt to the local grid resolution. The numerical methods mentioned earlier have been implemented in an internal simulation code, CFD3. The numerical examples presented in the study show good performance of CFD3 in prediction of surface tension‐dominated free‐surface flows, for example, droplet ejection in thermal inkjet printing. Currently, CFD3 is used extensively for printhead development within Hewlett‐Packard. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper describes a finite‐volume volume‐of‐fluid (VOF) method for simulating viscous free surface flows on dynamically adaptive quadtree grids. The scheme is computationally efficient in that it provides relatively fine grid resolution at the gas–liquid interface and coarse grid density in regions where flow variable gradients are small. Special interpolations are used to ensure volume flux conservation where differently sized neighbour cells occur. The numerical model is validated for advection of dyed fluid in unidirectional and rotating flows, and for two‐dimensional viscous sloshing in a rectangular tank. An accurate finite‐volume‐based numerical method for the simulation of an isothermal two‐phase flow, consisting of a liquid slug translating in a non‐reacting gas in a circular pipe is presented. This method is built on a sharp interface concept and developed on an Eulerian Cartesian fixed‐grid with a cut‐cell scheme and marker points to track the moving interface. The unsteady, axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations in both liquid and gas phases are solved separately. The mass continuity and momentum flux conditions are explicitly matched at the true surface phase boundary to determine the interface shape and movement. A quadratic curve fitting algorithm with marker points is used to yield smooth and accurate information of the interface curvatures. It is uniquely demonstrated for the first time with the current method that conservation of mass is strictly enforced for continuous infusion of flow into the domain of computation. The method has been used to compute the velocity and pressure fields and the deformation of the liquid core. It is also shown that the current method is capable of producing accurate results for a wide range of Reynolds number, Re, Weber number, We, and large property jumps at the interface. The effects of insoluble and soluble surfactant on the motion of a long bubble propagating through a capillary tube are investigated computationally using a finite-difference/front-tracking method. Emphasis is placed on the effects of surfactant on the liquid film thickness between the bubble and the tube wall. The numerical method is designed to solve the evolution equations of the interfacial and bulk surfactant concentrations coupled with the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. A non-linear equation of state is used to relate surface tension coefficient to surfactant concentration at the interface. Computations are first performed for soluble cases and then repeated for the corresponding clean and insoluble cases for a wide range of governing non-dimensional parameters in order to investigate the effects of surfactant and surfactant solubility. The computed film thickness for the clean case is found to be in a good agreement with Taylor’s law indicating the accuracy of the numerical method. We found that both the insoluble and soluble surfactant generally have a thickening effect on the film thickness, which is especially pronounced at low capillary numbers. This thickening effect strengthens with increasing sensitivity of surface tension to interfacial surfactant coverage mainly due to the enhanced Marangoni stresses along the liquid film. It is also observed that film thickening shows a non-monotonic behavior for variations in Peclet number. The validity of insoluble surfactant assumption is assessed for various non-dimensional numbers and it is demonstrated that insoluble assumption is valid only when capillary number is very low, i.e., Ca  1 and when surface tension is highly sensitive to interfacial surfactant coverage, i.e., the elasticity number is large.  相似文献

Rhie–Chow interpolation is a commonly used method in CFD calculations on a co‐located mesh in order to suppress non‐physical pressure oscillations arising from chequerboard effects. A fully parallelized smoothed‐interface immersed boundary method on a co‐located grid is described in this paper. We discuss the necessity of modifications to the original Rhie–Chow interpolation in order to deal with a locally refined mesh. Numerical simulation with the modified scheme of Choi shows that numerical dissipation due to Rhie–Chow interpolation introduces significant errors at the immersed boundary. To address this issue, we develop an improved Rhie–Chow interpolation scheme that is shown to increase the accuracy in resolving the flow near the immersed boundary. We compare our improved scheme with the modified scheme of Choi by parallel simulations of benchmark flows: (i) flow past a stationary cylinder; (ii) flow past an oscillating cylinder; and (iii) flow past a stationary elliptical cylinder, where Reynolds numbers are tested in the range 10–200. Our improved scheme is significantly more accurate and compares favourably with a staggered grid algorithm. We also develop a scheme to compute the boundary force for the direct‐forcing immersed boundary method efficiently. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Three-dimensional dynamic gas–liquid flow simulations that accurately track the phase interface are numerically challenging. This article presents a numerical study of the performance of the level-set phase–interface tracking method when combined with extremely high order (7th to 11th) weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) advection schemes for gas–liquid free surface flows. Comparisons between simulation results and prior benchmark results suggest that such a combination of methods can be satisfactorily applied to the level-set and Navier-Stokes equations for free surface flow simulations when volume conservation is enforced at every time step, and minor numerical oscillations are suppressed through use of an artificial viscosity term. In particular, simulations of solid body rotation, the unsteady flow following an ideal dam break, tank sloshing, and the rise of a single bubble all agree with analytical or experimental results to within ± 3.12% when the level-set method is combined with an 11th order WENO scheme. Furthermore, use of an 11th order WENO advection scheme actually has a computational cost advantage because, for the same accuracy, it can be used on a coarser grid when compared with a more-common second-order advection scheme; computational savings of up to 87% are possible.  相似文献

A method for the application of interface force in the computational modeling of free surfaces and interfaces which uses PLIC-VOF methods is developed. This method is based on evaluation of the surface tension force only in the interfacial cells with out using the neighboring cells. The normal and the interface surface area needed for the calculation of the surface tension force are calculated more accurately. This method is applied on a staggered grid and it is referred to as Staggered Grid Interfere Pressure calculation method or SGIP. The present method is applied to a two-dimensional motionless liquid drop and a gas bubble. In addition, oscillations of a non-circular two-dimensional drop and a bubble due only to the surface tension forces are considered. It is shown that the new method predicts the pressure jump at the interface more accurately and produces less spurious currents compared to CSF, CSS and Meier's methods when applied to the same cases.  相似文献

When a drop of insoluble surfactant is deposited on the surface of a thin liquid film, a radial flow is induced by the resulting surface tension gradient. It is difficult in practice to measure or visualize the evolution of the surfactant concentration and the corresponding surface tension field. In this contribution, we propose a numerical technique which allows, in theory, the reconstruction of the surfactant concentration and surface tension fields from the knowledge of the free surface velocity. The method also requires the knowledge of the equation of state relating the surfactant concentration to the surface tension. The proposed method is based on a reformulation of the lubrication approximation which then takes as an input the free surface velocity field. As a by-product, the film thickness is also reconstructed. We also show in this contribution, that the surface diffusion coefficient can also be estimated, in principle. The methodologies are successfully tested on ideal, synthetic data-sets but also on under-resolved, noisy, data-sets more representative of true experimental conditions. This contribution may help shed some light on the phenomena involved in surfactant transport.  相似文献

The problem of two-layer convective flow of viscous incompressible fluids in a horizontal channel with solid walls in the presence of evaporation is considered in the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation assuming that the interface is an undeformable thermocapillary surface and taking into account the Dufour effect in the upper layer which is a mixture of gas and liquid vapor. The effects of longitudinal temperature gradients at the boundaries of the channel and the thicknesses of the layer on the flow pattern and the evaporation rate are studied under conditions of specified gas flow and the absence of vapor flow on the upper boundary of the channel. It is shown that the long-wavelength asymptotics for the decrement is determined from the flow characteristics, the longwavelength perturbations occurring in the system decay monotonically, and the thermal instability mechanism is not potentially the most dangerous.  相似文献

The motion of a thin liquid film of viscous incompressible fluid on the horizontal surface in the presence of a magnetizable surfactant on the free boundary in the external inhomogeneous magnetic field is investigated. Surfactant diffusion along the free surface and the dependence of the surface tension on the magnetic field strength are taken into account. The system of evolutionary equations is derived in the lubricant approximation and steady-state film flows and their stability in the case of constant film thickness and constant surfactant number density are investigated with regard to the Marangoni effect.  相似文献

Consider the dynamics of a thin laminar liquid film flowing over an inclined wall in the presence of a co-flowing turbulent gas. The solution to the full two-phase flow problem poses substantial technical difficulties. However, by making appropriate assumptions, the solution process can be simplified and can provide valuable insights. The assumptions allow us to solve the gas and liquid problems independently. Solving for the gas flow reduces to finding perturbations to pressure and tangential stresses at the interface, influencing the liquid problem through the boundary conditions. We analyze the effect of gas flow on the liquid problem by developing an integral-boundary-layer model, which is valid up to moderate liquid Reynolds numbers. We seek solitary-wave solutions of this model under the influence of gas flow via a pseudo-arclength continuation method. Our computations demonstrate that as a general trend, the wave speed increases with increasing the gas shear and the liquid flow rate. Further insight into the problem is provided via time-dependent computations of the integral-boundary-layer model.  相似文献

A pressure‐driven flow of elongated bullet‐shaped bubbles in a narrow channel is known as Taylor flow or bubble‐train flow. This process is of relevance in various applications of chemical engineering. In this paper, we describe a typical simplified experimental setting, with surface tension, density and viscosity as prescribed input parameters. We compare a sharp‐interface model based on a moving grid aligned with the bubble boundary (ALE coordinates) and a diffuse‐interface model where the bubble shape is implicitly given by a phase‐field function. Four independent implementations based on the two modeling approaches are introduced and described briefly. Besides the simulation of the bubble shapes, we compare some resulting quantities such as pressure difference and film widths within the implementations and to existing analytical and experimental results. The simulations were conducted in 2D and 3D (rotationally symmetric). Good accordance of the results indicate the applicability and the usability of all approaches. Differences between the models and their implementations are visible but in no contradiction to theoretical results. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
