The changes in force characteristics as well as the shedding patterns for various dual sphere configurations are studied. The Reynolds numbers considered are 300, 600 and two different inflow conditions are used: steady and pulsating. The sphere formations are defined by the separation distance D0 between the spheres and the angle between the line connecting the centres of the spheres and the main flow direction, γ. The position of one of the spheres is varied in the range 0°–90° using a 15° increment. Two separation distances are studied; 1.5D and 3D. The method used for the simulations is the Volume of Solid (VOS) approach, a method based on Volume of Fluid (VOF). A major conclusion from this work is that the sphere interaction alters the wake dynamics by obstructing the vortex shedding (generating a steady wake or a wake with lower Strouhal number) and by changing the direction of the lift force so that it in most cases is directed in the plane containing the sphere centres. The results also show that changing the inflow condition gives the same relative change in drag and lift as for a single sphere. The drag is substantially reduced by placing the sphere downstream in a tandem arrangement and slightly increased in a side-by-side arrangement. However, the effect is decreased by increasing separation distance and increasing Reynolds number.  相似文献

We perform fully resolved direct numerical simulations of an isolated particle subjected to free-stream turbulence in order to investigate the effect of turbulence on the drag and lift forces at the level of a single particle, following Bagchi and Balachandar’s work (Bagchi and Balachandar in Phys Fluids 15:3496–3513, 2003). The particle Reynolds numbers based on the mean relative particle velocity and the particle diameter are Re?=?100, 250 and 350, which covers three different regimes of wake evolution in a uniform flow: steady axisymmetric wake, steady planar symmetric wake, and unsteady planar symmetric vortex shedding. At each particle Reynolds number, the turbulent intensity is 5–10% of the mean relative particle velocity, and the corresponding diameter of the particle is comparable to or larger than the Kolmogorov scale. The simulation results show that standard drag values determined from uniform flow simulations can accurately predict the drag force if the turbulence intensity is sufficiently weak (5% or less compared to the mean relative velocity). However, it is shown that for finite-sized particles, flow non-uniformity, which is usually neglected in the case of the small particles, can play an important role in determining the forces as the relative turbulence intensity becomes large. The influence of flow non-uniformity on drag force could be qualitatively similar to the Faxen correction. In addition, finite-sized particles at sufficient Reynolds number are inherently subjected to stochastic forces arising from their self-induced vortex shedding in addition to lift force arising from the local ambient flow properties (vorticity and strain rate). The effect of rotational and strain rate of the ambient turbulence seen by the particle on the lift force is explored based on the conditional averaging using the generalized representation of the quasi-steady force proposed by Bagchi and Balachandar (J Fluid Mech 481:105–148, 2003). From the present study, it is shown that at Re?=?100, the lift force is mainly influenced by the surrounding turbulence, but at Re = 250 and 350, the lift force is affected by the wake structure as well as the surrounding turbulence. Thus, for a finite-sized particle of sufficient Reynolds number supporting self-induced vortex shedding, the lift force will not be completely correlated with the ambient flow. Therefore, it appears that in order to reliably predict the motion of a finite-sized particle in turbulence, it is important to incorporate both a deterministic component and a stochastic component in the force model. The best deterministic contribution is given by the conditional average. The influence of ambient turbulence at the scale of the particle, which are not accounted for in the deterministic contribution, can be considered in stochastic manner. In the modeling of lift force, additional stochastic contribution arising from self-induced vortex shedding must also be included.  相似文献

We consider the problem of steady incompressible viscous fluid flow about a rotating sphere, with the flow specified on a sphere of finite radius, which reduces to the solution of the complete Navier-Stokes equations. The dimensionless stream functions and circulai velocity are sought in the form of series in powers of the Reynolds numbers, which converge for small values of this number. Recurrence formulas are derived for determining the coefficients of these series. The pressure, rotational resistance torque, and drag are determined. It is established that the rotating sphere has higher drag than a stationary sphere. The leading term of the series in powers of the Reynolds number for the drag and resistive torque is calculated.  相似文献

This study elucidates the relation between wake vortex shedding and aerodynamic force fluctuations for a low Reynolds number wing from time resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) experimental measurements. The results reveal a periodic lift and drag variation within the shedding cycle and resolve the frequencies of those fluctuations from a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and power spectral density (PSD) analysis. To show the effect of vortex shedding on the body force fluctuations, the evolution of instantaneous aerodynamic forces is compared to the pressure field of the fluid flow and to the vortical structures in the wake of the airfoil. A six step model describing the vortex-force relation is proposed. It shows that changes in lift such as maximum lift and minimum lift are associated with the detachment of a vortex. It also shows that the minimum or local minimum drag value is obtained at the onset formation of a vortex on the airfoil wake. Similarly, the maximum or local maximum drag is obtained at the onset formation of the saddle on the airfoil wake. The model further explains the asymmetry observed in the unsteady drag force evolution. The model can be used to optimize flow control and fluid-structure interaction applications.  相似文献

The lift force on an isolated rotating sphere in a uniform flow was investigated by means of a three-dimensional numerical simulation for low Reynolds numbers (based on the sphere diameter) (Re<68.4) and high dimensionless rotational speeds (Г5). The Navier-Stokes equations in Cartesian coordinate system were solved using a finite volume formulation based on SIMPLE procedure. The accuracy of the numerical simulation was tested through a comparison with available theoretical, numerical and experimental results at low Reynolds numbers, and it was found that they were in close agreement under the above mentioned ranges of the Reynolds number and rotational speed. From a detailed computation of the flow field around a rotational sphere in extended ranges of the Reynolds number and rotational speed, the results show that, with increasing the rotational speed or decreasing the Reynolds number, the lift coefficient increases. An empirical equation more accurate than those obtained by previous studies was obtained to describe both effects of the rotational speed and Reynolds number on the lift force on a sphere. It was found in calcttlations that the drag coefficient is not significantly affected by the rotation of the sphere. The ratio of the lift force to the drag force, both of which act on a sphere in a uniform flow at the same time, was investigated. For a small spherical particle such as one of about 100μm in diameter, even if the rotational speed reaches about 10^6 revolutions per minute, the lift force can be neglected as compared with the drag force.  相似文献

We numerically investigate the wake flow of an afterbody at low Reynolds number in the incompressible and compressible regimes. We found that, with increasing Reynolds number, the initially stable and axisymmetric base flow undergoes a first stationary bifurcation which breaks the axisymmetry and develops two parallel steady counter-rotating vortices. The critical Reynolds number (Re cs) for the loss of the flow axisymmetry reported here is in excellent agreement with previous axisymmetric BiGlobal linear stability (BiGLS) results. As the Reynolds number increases above a second threshold, Re co, we report a second instability defined as a three-dimensional peristaltic oscillation which modulates the vortices, similar to the sphere wake, sharing many points in common with long-wavelength symmetric Crow instability. Both the critical Reynolds number for the onset of oscillation, Re co, and the Strouhal number of the time-periodic limit cycle, Stsat, are substantially shifted with respect to previous axisymmetric BiGLS predictions neglecting the first bifurcation. For slightly larger Reynolds numbers, the wake oscillations are stronger and vortices are shed close to the afterbody base. In the compressible regime, no fundamental changes are observed in the bifurcation process. It is shown that the steady state planar-symmetric solution is almost equal to the incompressible case and that the break of planar symmetry in the vortex shedding regime is retarded due to compressibility effects. Finally, we report the developments of a low frequency which depends on the afterbody aspect ratio, as well as on the Reynolds and on the Mach number, prior to the loss of the planar symmetry of the wake.  相似文献

The two-dimensional flow around a rotating cylinder is investigated numerically using a vorticity forces formulation with the aim of analyzing quantitatively the flow structures, and their evolutions, that contribute to the lift and drag forces on the cylinder. The Reynolds number considered, based on the cylinder diameter and steady free stream speed, is Re=200, while the non-dimensional rotation rate (ratio of the surface speed and free stream speed) selected was α=1 and 3. For α=1 the wake behind the cylinder for the fully developed flow is oscillatory due to vortex shedding, and so are the lift and drag forces. For α=3 the fully developed flow is steady with constant (high) lift and (low) drag. Each of these cases is considered in two different transient problems, one with angular acceleration of the cylinder and constant speed, and the other one with translating acceleration of the cylinder and constant rotation. We characterize quantitatively the contributions of individual fluid elements (vortices) to aerodynamic forces, explaining and quantifying the mechanisms by which the lift is generated in each case. In particular, for high rotation (when α=3), we explain the relation between the mechanisms of vortex shedding suppression and those by which the lift is enhanced and the drag is almost suppressed when the fully developed flow is reached.  相似文献

The unsteady and steady flow past a sphere mounted with a very narrow clearance in a cylindrical pipe is experimentally investigated. The unsteady flow is studied for the case of regular transverse self-oscillations of the sphere accompanied by its impact interaction with the pipe wall. In the steady flow regime the center of the sphere is fixed on the pipe axis. The dependence of the local resistance due to the presence of the sphere and of the body drag coefficient on the relevant dimensionless parameters is determined. The dynamic characteristics for the steady and unsteady regimes are compared.  相似文献

In this paper, the wake effect on drag factor in the axisymmetric Oseen flow of the finite clusters of equally spaced spheres with same size is studied. Putting the Oseen lets on the centres of all the spheres, the series solution of the problem is obtained. By truncating the infinite series and applying the collocation method to solve a set of the linear algebraic equations, the approximate solution of the Oseen flow of finite clusters of spheres and the drag factor for each sphere are presented. The effect of the sphere number and spacing on the drag factor of each sphere under different Reynolds numbers are calculated and the wake effect as well as the shielding effect and the end effect are revealed. The influence of various parameters on the effects is considered and compared with the corresponding results of the Stokes flow. The convergence of the method is also studied numerically in this paper.  相似文献

Passive wake control behind a circular cylinder in uniform flow is studied by numerical simulation for ReD ranging from 80 to 300. Two small control cylinders, with diameter d/D=1/8, are placed at x/D=0.5 and y/D=±0.6. Unlike the 1990 results of Strykowski and Sreenivasan, in the present study, the vortex street behind the main cylinder still exists but the fluctuating lift and the form drag on the main cylinder reduces significantly and monotonously as the Reynolds number increases from 80 to 300. Obstruction of the control cylinders to the incoming flow deflects part of the fluid to pass through the gap between the main and control cylinders, forming two symmetric streams. These streams not only eliminate the flow separation along the rear surface of the main cylinder, they also merge toward the wake centerline to create an advancing momentum in the immediate near-wake region. These two effects significantly reduce the wake width behind the main cylinder and lead to monotonous decrease of the form drag as the Reynolds number increases. As the Reynolds number gets higher, a large amount of the downstream advancing momentum significantly delays the vortex formation farther downstream, leading to a more symmetric flow structure in the near-wake region of the main cylinder. As the Reynolds number increases from 80 to 300, both increasing symmetry of the flow structure in the near-wake and significant delay of the vortex formation are the main reasons for the fluctuating lift to decrease monotonously.  相似文献

Laminar flow past a circular cylinder with multiple small-diameter control rods is numerically investigated in this study. The effects of rod-to-cylinder spacing ratio, rod and cylinder diameter ratio, cylinder Reynolds number, number of control rods and angle of attack on the hydrodynamics of the main circular cylinder are investigated. Four different flow regimes are identified based on the mechanism of lift and drag reduction. The range of rod-to-cylinder spacing ratio where significant force suppression can be achieved is found to become narrower as the Reynolds number increases in the laminar regime, but is insensitive to the diameter ratio. The numerical results for the case with six identical small control rods at Re=200 show that the lift fluctuation on the main cylinder can be suppressed significantly for a large range of spacing ratio and various diameter ratios, while the drag reduction on the main cylinder is also achieved simultaneously. The six-control-rod arrangement has shown better performance in flow control than the arrangements with less control rods, especially in terms of force reduction at various angles of attack.  相似文献

A numerical investigation of the two-dimensional laminar flow around side-by-side rotating circular cylinders using Lattice Boltzmann method is conducted. The effects of variation of rotational speed ratio β and different gap spacings g* at Reynolds number of 100 are studied. A various range of rotational speed ratio 0 ≤ β ≤ 2 for four different gap spacings of 3, 1.5, 0.7 and 0.2 are investigated. Flow conditions and its characteristics, such as lift and drag coefficients and Strouhal number, is studied. The results indicated that as β increases, the flow changes its condition from periodic to steady after a critical rotational speed. Results also indicated that variation of the gap spacing and rotational speed has significant effect on wake pattern. Wake pattern in turn has significant effect on the Strouhal number. Finally, the result is compared with experimental and other numerical data.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations are conducted for a rotating golf ball and a rotating smooth sphere at a constant rotational speed at the subcritical, critical and supercritical Reynolds numbers. A negative lift force is generated in the critical regime for both models, whereas positive lift forces are generated in the subcritical and supercritical regimes. Detailed analysis on the flow separations on different sides of the models reveals the mechanism of the negative Magnus effect. Further investigation of the unsteady aerodynamics reveals the effect of rotating motion on the development of lateral forces and wake flow structures. It is found that the rotating motion helps to stabilize the resultant lateral forces for both models especially in the supercritical regime.  相似文献

Recently Lee and Balachandar proposed analytically-based expressions for drag and lift coefficients for a spherical particle moving on a flat wall in a linear shear flow at finite Reynolds number. In order to evaluate the accuracy of these expressions, we have conducted direct numerical simulations of a rolling particle for shear Reynolds number up to 100. We assume that the particle rolls on a horizontal flat wall with a small gap separating the particle from the wall (L = 0.505) and thus avoiding the logarithmic singularity. The influence of the shear Reynolds number and the translational velocity of the particle on the hydrodynamic forces of the particle was investigated under both transient and the final drag-free and torque-free steady state. It is observed that the quasi-steady drag and lift expressions of Lee and Balachandar provide good approximation for the terminal state of the particle motion ranging from perfect sliding to perfect rolling. With regards to transient particle motion in a wall-bounded shear flow it is observed that the above validated quasi-steady drag and lift forces must be supplemented with appropriate wall-corrected added-mass and history forces in order to accurately predict the time-dependent approach to the terminal steady state. Quantitative comparison with the actual particle motion computed in the numerical simulations shows that the theoretical models quite effective in predicting rolling/sliding motion of a particle in a wall-bounded shear flow at moderate Re.  相似文献

Three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are performed to investigate the shear effects on flow around a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers of Re=60–1000. The shear parameter, β, which is based on the velocity gradient, cylinder diameter and upstream mean velocity at the center plane of the cylinder, varies from 0 to 0.30. Variations of Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients, and unsteady wake structures with shear parameter are studied, along with their dependence on Reynolds number. The presented simulation provides detailed information for the flow field around a circular cylinder in shear flow. This study shows that the Strouhal number exhibits no significant variation with shear parameter. The stagnation point moves to the high-velocity side almost linearly with shear parameter, and this result mainly influences the aerodynamic forces acting on a circular cylinder in shear flow. Both the Reynolds number and shear parameter influence the movement of the stagnation point and separation point. Mode A wake instability is suppressed into parallel vortex shedding mode at a certain shear parameter. The lift force increases with increasing shear parameter and acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side. In addition, a simple method to estimate the lift force coefficient in shear flow is provided.  相似文献

We assess the effect of the choice of spanwise periodic length on simulations of the flow around a fixed circular cylinder. The Reynolds number is set to 400 because, at this value, both lift coefficient and shedding frequency show significant drop due to three-dimensional flow structures. From the analysis of the three-dimensionalities of the wake and of the integral quantities such as Strouhal number, RMS of lift coefficient and energy contained in the three-dimensional portion of the flow we obtain an estimate of the minimum spanwise length to satisfactorily represent the flow. Furthermore, we observe a distinct wake behavior when the spanwise length is approximately the mode B instability wavelength.  相似文献

In this paper, hydrodynamic force coefficients and wake vortex structures of uniform flow over a transversely oscillating circular cylinder beneath a free surface were numerically investigated by an adaptive Cartesian cut-cell/level-set method. At a fixed Reynolds number, 100, a series of simulations covering three Froude numbers, two submergence depths, and three oscillation amplitudes were performed over a wide range of oscillation frequency. Results show that, for a deeply submerged cylinder with sufficiently large oscillation amplitudes, both the lift amplitude jump and the lift phase sharp drop exist, not accompanied by significant changes of vortex shedding timing. The near-cylinder vortex structure changes when the lift amplitude jump occurs. For a cylinder oscillating beneath a free surface, larger oscillation amplitude or submergence depth causes higher time-averaged drag for frequency ratio (=oscillation frequency/natural vortex shedding frequency) greater than 1.25. All near-free-surface cases exhibit negative time-averaged lift the magnitude of which increases with decreasing submergence depth. In contrast to a deeply submerged cylinder, occurrences of beating in the temporal variation of lift are fewer for a cylinder oscillating beneath a free surface, especially for small submergence depth. For the highest Froude number investigated, the lift frequency is locked to the cylinder oscillation frequency for frequency ratios higher than one. The vortex shedding mode tends to be double-row for deep and single-row for shallow submergence. Proximity to the free surface would change or destroy the near-cylinder vortex structure characteristic of deep-submergence cases. The lift amplitude jump is smoother for smaller submergence depth. Similar to deep-submergence cases, the vortex shedding frequency is not necessarily the same as the primary-mode frequency of the lift coefficient. The frequency of the induced free surface wave is exactly the cylinder oscillation frequency. The trends of wave length variation with the Froude number and frequency ratio agree with those predicted by the linear theory of small-amplitude free surface waves.  相似文献

In the present experimental study the effect of a control disc mounted at the rear of an axisymmetric blunt-based body of revolution, first studied by Mair, is investigated in the Reynolds number range 3×103ReD≤5×104 . As the distance of the control disc from the blunt base is increased, four vortex shedding regimes are identified: at small distances there is no effect, then a sharp increase of vortex shedding activity and total drag is observed, followed by an interval with reduced activity and drag and finally at large distances a regime where the flow around the main body and disc become essentially independent, i.e. where the drag forces of the two elements become additive. The near and far wake velocity fields corresponding to the different regimes are documented with time- and phase-averaged hot-wire and LDA measurements, with spectral analysis of the data and with flow visualizations of the near wake. The results are used to develop an improved understanding of the instability mechanism leading to high vortex shedding activity.  相似文献
