In this paper, we study the fault-tolerant matroid median and fault-tolerant knapsack median problems. These two problems generalize many fundamental clustering and facility location problems, such as uniform fault-tolerant k-median, uniform fault-tolerant facility location, matroid median, knapsack median, etc. We present a versatile iterative rounding framework and obtain a unifying constant-factor approximation algorithm. 相似文献

The survivable network design problem (SNDP) is to construct a minimum-cost subgraph satisfying certain given edge-connectivity requirements. The first polynomial-time approximation algorithm was given by Williamson et al. (Combinatorica 15 (1995) 435–454). This paper gives an improved version that is more efficient. Consider a graph ofn vertices and connectivity requirements that are at mostk. Both algorithms find a solution that is within a factor 2k – 1 of optimal fork 2 and a factor 2 of optimal fork = 1. Our algorithm improves the time from O(k
3n4) to O
). Our algorithm shares features with those of Williamson et al. (Combinatorica 15 (1995) 435–454) but also differs from it at a high level, necessitating a different analysis of correctness and accuracy; our analysis is based on a combinatorial characterization of the redundant edges. Several other ideas are introduced to gain efficiency. These include a generalization of Padberg and Rao's characterization of minimum odd cuts, use of a representation of all minimum (s, t) cuts in a network, and a new priority queue system. The latter also improves the efficiency of the approximation algorithm of Goemans and Williamson (SIAM Journal on Computing 24 (1995) 296–317) for constrained forest problems such as minimum-weight matching, generalized Steiner trees and others. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. We introduce a class of incremental network design problems focused on investigating the optimal choice and timing of network expansions. We concentrate on an incremental network design problem with shortest paths. We investigate structural properties of optimal solutions, show that the simplest variant is NP-hard, analyze the worst-case performance of natural greedy heuristics, derive a 4-approximation algorithm, and conduct a small computational study. 相似文献

We study approximation algorithms for generalized network design where the cost of an edge depends on the identities of the demands using it (as a monotone subadditive function). Our main result is that even a very special case of this problem cannot be approximated to within a factor 2log1−ε|D| if D is the set of demands. 相似文献

We study a generalization of the vertex cover problem. For a given graph with weights on the vertices and an integer k, we aim to find a subset of the vertices with minimum total weight, so that at least k edges in the graph are covered. The problem is called the k-partial vertex cover problem. There are some 2-approximation algorithms for the problem. In the paper we do not improve on the approximation ratios of the previous algorithms, but we derive an iterative rounding algorithm. We present our technique in two algorithms. The first is an iterative rounding algorithm and gives a (2 + Q/OPT )-approximation for the k-partial vertex cover problem where Q is the largest finite weight in the problem definition and OPT is the optimal value for the instance. The second algorithm uses the first as a subroutine and achieves an approximation ratio of 2. 相似文献

We address the classical knapsack problem and a variant in which an upper bound is imposed on the number of items that can be selected. We show that appropriate combinations of rounding techniques yield novel and more powerful ways of rounding. Moreover, we present a linear-storage polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) and a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) that compute an approximate solution, of any fixed accuracy, in linear time. These linear complexity bounds give a substantial improvement of the best previously known polynomial bounds [A. Caprara, et al., Approximation algorithms for knapsack problems with cardinality constraints, European J. Oper. Res. 123 (2000) 333-345]. 相似文献

Building on an existing 2-approximate algorithm for the class of network design problems with downwards-monotone demand functions, many of which are NP-hard, we present an algorithm that produces solutions that are at least as good as and typically better than solutions produced by the existing algorithm. 相似文献

We provide a deterministic algorithm that constructs small point sets exhibiting a low star discrepancy. The algorithm is based on recent results on randomized roundings respecting hard constraints and their derandomization. It is structurally much simpler than a previous algorithm presented for this problem in [B. Doerr, M. Gnewuch, A. Srivastav, Bounds and constructions for the star discrepancy via δ-covers, J. Complexity, 21 (2005) 691–709]. Besides leading to better theoretical running time bounds, our approach also can be implemented with reasonable effort. We implemented this algorithm and performed numerical comparisons with other known low-discrepancy constructions. The experiments take place in dimensions ranging from 5 to 21 and indicate that our algorithm leads to superior results if the dimension is relatively high and the number of points that have to be constructed is rather small. 相似文献

Network design problem has been, and is, an important problem in transportation. Following an earlier effort in designing a meta-heuristic search technique by an ant system, this paper attempts to hybridize this concept with other meta-heuristic concepts such as genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and tabu search. Seven hybrids have been devised and tested on the network of Sioux Falls. It has been observed that the hybrids are more effective to solve the network design problem than the base ant system. Application of the hybrid containing all four concepts on a real network of a city with over 2 million population has also proved to be more effective than the base network, in the sense of finding better solutions sooner. 相似文献

The network substitution problem is to substitute an existing network for a new network so that to minimize the cost of exploiting the existing network during the period when the new network is being constructed. We show that this problem is NP-hard, and propose a 2-approximation algorithm for solving it. 相似文献

This paper presents a unified framework for the general network design problem which encompasses several classical problems involving combined location and network design decisions. In some of these problems the service demand relates users and facilities, whereas in other cases the service demand relates pairs of users between them, and facilities are used to consolidate and re-route flows between users. Problems of this type arise in the design of transportation and telecommunication systems and include well-known problems such as location-network design problems, hub location problems, extensive facility location problems, tree-star location problems and cycle-star location problems, among others. Relevant modeling aspects, alternative formulations and possible algorithmic strategies are presented and analyzed. 相似文献

Previous work on the partial Latin square extension (PLSE) problem resulted in a 2-approximation algorithm based on the LP relaxation of a three-dimensional assignment IP formulation. We present an e/(e−1)-approximation algorithm that is based on the LP relaxation of a packing IP formulation of the PLSE problem. 相似文献

We address the problem of designing a network built on several layers. This problem occurs in practical applications but has not been studied extensively from the point of view of global optimisation, since the problem of designing a single-layered network is complex. An example of an application is the design of a virtual network (Internet Protocol) built on a sparse optical transport network. 相似文献

A polynomial-time algorithm is suggested for non-preemptive scheduling of n-independent jobs on m-unrelated machines to minimize the makespan. The algorithm has a worst-case performance ratio of 2−1/m. This is better than the earlier known best performance bound 2. Our approach gives the best possible approximation ratio that can be achieved using the rounding approach. 相似文献
