Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a type of gas permeable media widely used in microfluidic applications. In this work multiphase patterns and boiling curves in PDMS square microchannels were experimentally investigated. Very fine platinum wires with diameter of 50 μm were embedded through the microchannels and serving as heater. The multiphase patterns were visualized by means of high speed CCD camera with microscope. Curves of temperature versus heat flux on the wire heaters were plotted. Based on the evolution of multiphase patterns, five boiling regimes were classified, that is, single phase, bubble formation, slug formation, slug dominated and dry out. Interestingly, the bubbles were generated from the channel walls rather than the heater surface, and so-called “droplets-in-bubble” phenomenon drew attention in which bunches of microdroplets kept forming, growing, and disappearing within the big bubbles. The boiling curves were plotted and compared to boiling in open space and in glass tubes. The heat transfer in the PDMS microchannels got deteriorated when the bubbles formed.  相似文献

This paper deals with measurements of convective velocity of large-scale thermal structures, using the thin foil technique and infrared thermography to visualize the thermal pattern on the wall. An image correlation method is proposed to track the displacement of the observed thermal pattern. The idea of the method is similar to that of particle image velocimetry, but the thermal patterns on the heated wall are used, rather than tracing particles. On this basis, the thermal patterns created by the coherent structures of turbulent channel flow are examined. Particular attention is paid to the determination of the optimal parameters of image acquisition, including spatial and temporal separation. An attempt is made to relate momentum and scalar transport analyses by considering the propagation velocity of large-scale temperature structures. The proposed technique appears to be an attractive alternative for non-intrusive analysis of turbulent flow, especially, where opaqueness of channel walls excludes the use of optical methods. The focus of this study lies on turbulent incompressible swirling flows with high swirl intensity. A systematic parameter study is conducted to examine the sensitivity of the mean velocity field in a swirl chamber to changes in the Reynolds number, swirl intensity and channel outlet geometry. The investigated parameter range reflects the typical kinematic flow conditions found in heat transfer applications, such as the cooling of the turbine blade known as cyclone cooling. These applications require a swirl intensity, which is typically much higher than necessary for vortex breakdown. The resulting flows are known as flow regime II and III. In comparison to flow regime I, which denotes a swirling flow without vortex breakdown, these flow regimes are characterized by a subcritical behavior. In this context, subcritical means that the flow is affected by the downstream channel section. Based on mean velocity field measurements in various swirl chamber configurations, it is shown that flow regime III is particularly sensitive to these effects. The channel outlet geometry becomes a determining parameter and, therefore, small changes at the outlet can produce entirely different flow patterns in the swirl chamber. In contrast, flow regime II, as well as flow regime I and axial channel flows, are much less sensitive to changes at the channel outlet. The knowledge about the sensitivity of the flow in different flow regimes is highly relevant for the design of a cyclone cooling system. Cooling systems employing flow regime III can result in a weakly robust flow system that may change completely over the operating range. As a remedy, the swirl intensity needs to be decreased so that flow regime III cannot be reached, which, however, reduces the maximum achievable heat transfer in the cooling system. Alternatively, the flow has to transition back from flow regime III to flow regime II or I before the flow leaves the swirl chamber. Two practical methods are presented. These findings can be directly applied in the design processes of future cyclone cooling systems, and other applications of swirling flow.  相似文献

The thermal response in paper has been studied by thermography. It was observed that an inhomogeneous deformation pattern arose in the paper samples during tensile testing. In the plastic regime a pattern of warmer streaks could be observed in the samples. On the same samples digital image correlation (DIC) was used to study local strain fields. It was concluded that the heat patterns observed by thermography coincided with the deformation patterns observed by DIC. Because of its fibrous network structure, paper has an inhomogeneous micro-structure, which is called formation. It could be shown that the formation was the cause of the inhomogeneous deformations in paper. Finite element simulations was used to show how papers with different degrees of heterogeneity would deform. Creped papers, where the strain at break has been increased, were analysed. For these paper it was seen that an overlaid compaction of the paper was created during the creping process. During tensile testing this was recovered as the paper network structure was strained.  相似文献

A simultaneous visualization and measurement study on some specific points on demand curves, such as onset of nucleate boiling (ONB), onset of significant void (OSV), onset of flow instability (OFI), and two-phase flow patterns in a single-side heated narrow rectangular channel, having a width of 40 mm and a gap of 3 mm, was carried out. New experimental approaches were adopted to identify OSV and OFI in a narrow rectangular channel. Under experimental conditions, the ONB could be predicted well by the Sato and Matsumura model. The OSV model of Bowring can reasonably predict the OSV if the single-side heated condition is considered. The OFI was close to the saturated boiling point and could be described accurately by Kennedy’s correlation. The two-phase flow patterns observed in this experiment could be classified into bubbly, churn, and annular flow. Slug flow was never observed. The OFI always occurred when the bubbles at the channel exit began to coalesce, which corresponded to the beginning of the bubbly–churn transition in flow patterns. Finally, the evolution of specific points and flow pattern transitions were examined in a single-side heated narrow rectangular channel.  相似文献

The near-wake of a circular cylinder having a helical wire pattern about its surface is characterized using a technique of high-image-density velocimetry. Patterns of vorticity in three orthogonal planes show substantial influence of a wire having a diameter an order of magnitude smaller than the cylinder diameter. The distinctive patterns of vorticity in these three planes are associated with lack of formation of large-scale Kármán-like clusters of vorticity (ωz) in the near-wake region of the cylinder. The instantaneous structure of the separating spanwise vorticity (ωz) layers on either side of the cylinder involve small-scale concentrations of vorticity analogous to the well-known Kelvin–Helmholtz vortices from a smooth cylinder. Moreover, a dual vorticity layer, i.e., two adjacent layers of like vorticity (ωz), can form from one side of the cylinder. Along the span of the cylinder, distributions of instantaneous velocity and transverse vorticity (ωy) show a spatially periodic sequence of wake-like patterns, each of which has features in common with the very near-wake of a two-dimensional bluff body, including a large velocity defect bounded by vorticity layers with embedded small-scale vorticity concentrations. In the cross-flow plane of the wake, patterns of streamwise vorticity (ωx) show small-scale, counter-rotating pairs of vorticity concentrations (ωx) emanating from the inclined helical perturbation, rather than isolated concentrations of vorticity of like sign, which would indicate single streamwise vortices. All of the aforementioned patterns of small-scale vorticity concentrations are scaled according to the local wake width/local pitch of the helical wire pattern in the respective plane of observation.  相似文献

Detailed numerical simulations of isolated n-decane droplets autoignition are presented for different values of the ambient pressure and temperature. The ignition modes considered included single-stage ignition, two-stage ignition and cool-flame ignition. The analysis was conducted from a mixture fraction perspective. Two characteristic chemical time scales were identified for two-stage ignition: one for cool-flame ignition, and another for hot-flame ignition. The appearance and subsequent spatial propagation of a cool flame at lean compositions was found to play an important role in the ignition process, since it created the conditions for activating the high-temperature reactions pathway in regions with locally rich composition. Single-stage ignition was characterized by a single chemical time scale, corresponding to hot-flame ignition. Low-temperature reactions were negligible for this case, and spatial diffusion of heat and chemical species mainly affected the duration of the ignition transient, but not the location in mixture fraction space at which ignition first occurs. Finally, ignition of several cool flames of decreasing strength was observed in the cool-flame ignition case, which eventually lead to a plateau in the maximum gas-phase temperature. The first cool flame ignited in a region where the fuel / air mixture was locally lean, whereas ignition of the remaining cool flames occurred at rich mixture compositions.  相似文献

In Part I, theoretical analysis of the dynamic behaviour of a rigid rotor with nonlinear elastic restoring forces was carried out. In this part (Part II), an experimental confirmation of the theoretical data from that analysis was sought. With this aim, an experimental model was set up consisting mainly of a practically rigid rotor clamped onto a small diameter piano wire symmetrical to the wire supports. These supports were rigid and equipped with roller bearings and a device that made it possible to adjust the initial tension in the wire so as to make the elastic restoring forces less or more linear. The rotor was dynamically unbalanced and was driven by an asynchronous motor regulated by means of an inverter in order to adjust the rotor speed. A series of tests was performed on this rig with different values of the initial tension in the wire, and the trajectories of two points on the rotor axis were recorded in the course of the tests. These trajectories were obtained, under the hypothesis of similarity, from the orbits covered by two given sections of the wire and detected with two pairs of capacitive transducers. The collected data was compared with the theoretical results from Part I of the present investigation. Comparison of the collected data with the corresponding theoretical results made it possible to infer that system nonlinearity in the presence of small damping can give rise to motions that are periodic, whether synchronous or not, or quasi-periodic, but never chaotic.  相似文献

The two-phase flow in a short horizontal channel of a rectangular cross-section with the height of 100–500 µm and width of 9–40 mm was studied experimentally. The use of the Schliren and fluorescent methods made it possible to reveal the flow of liquid in the channel and to determine its characteristics quantitatively. The features of the churn, jet and drop flow patterns were studied in details. Two particular regimes that can be distinguished represent formation of immobile drops on the channel walls because of the liquid film or liquid bridges breakage and appearance of mobile drops due to the two-phase flow instabilities. It is found out that formation of various two-phase flow patterns and transitions between them are determined by instabilities of the liquid–gas flow in the side parts of a channel. Frontal instability has been observed during the liquid–gas interaction in the region of liquid output from the nozzle. It is shown that a change in the height and width of the horizontal channels has a substantial effect on the boundaries between the flow regimes. One of the results is that the region of the churn regime increases significantly with decreasing thickness of the channel.  相似文献

Summary The infinitely long cylindrical antenna immersed in a compressible plasma is considered as a boundary-value problem. The analysis starts with a specified voltage at a circumferential gap which is uniformly excited. It is found that the radiation pattern of the antenna is influenced only, to a slight extent, by the finite compressibility of the plasma, provided that the wire diameter is somewhat larger than a Debye length in the plasma.Equations in this Part II are continuous with those in Part I, Appl. sci. With an ever increasing demand for more effective heat sinks, liquid based electronic cooling has become a new prospect in the field. The present study introduces an electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pump with a simple design for dielectric liquids which have potential applications for electronic cooling. The pump consists of an eccentrically sandwiched wire electrode placed at the horizontal centerline between two parallel flat-plate electrodes. The EHD flow of dielectric liquid induced by the space charge generated due to the Onsager effect was obtained by the numerical solution of the Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations for ion transport and the Navier–Stokes equations for fluid flow. Good agreement obtained in the comparison of the numerical and the experimental results of velocity for the centrally sandwiched wire electrode case confirmed the validity of the numerical results. For a fixed voltage, the pump flow rate depends on the eccentricity of the wire electrode with respect to the plate electrodes and also with the electrode dimensions. By using the Taguchi method an optimum design for the EHD pump is obtained considering the wire electrode diameter, the flat plate electrode length and the eccentricity (the horizontal distance between the centers of wire and flat-plate electrodes) as the design parameters for fixed channel dimensions.

Micromixers are vital components in micro total analysis systems. It is desirable to develop micromixers which are capable of rapidly mixing two or more fluids in a small footprint area, while minimizing mechanical losses. A novel planar scaled-up passive micromixer is experimentally investigated in this study. The design incorporates a 7-substream uneven interdigital inlet which supplies two liquid species in a parallel arrangement and promotes diffusion along the side walls. Forty-eight staggered teardrop-shaped obstruction elements located along the channel length combined with 32 side walls protrusions increase the two-fluid interfacial area while converging the flow due to periodic reductions in cross-sectional area. The scaled-up micromixer has a mixing channel length of 110 mm with a mixing channel height and width of 2 and 5 mm, respectively. Experimental investigations are carried out at four locations along the channel length and at Reynolds numbers equal to 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100, where the Reynolds number is calculated based on total two-fluid flow and the mixing channel hydraulic diameter. Flow visualization is employed to study flow patterns, while induced fluorescence (IF), using de-ionized water and low concentration Rhodamine 6G solutions, provides mixing efficiency data. Results show a change in dominant mixing mechanism from mass diffusion to mass advection, with a critical Reynolds number of 25. At high Reynolds numbers, the formation of additional lamellae is observed, as is the formation of Dean vortices in the vicinity of the teardrop obstructions. Of the tested cases, the highest outlet mixing efficiency, 68.5%, is achieved at a Reynolds number of 1, where mass diffusion dominates. At low Reynolds numbers, superior mixing efficiency is due primarily to the implementation of the uneven interdigital inlet. A comparable mixing length is proposed to allow for reasonable comparison with published studies.  相似文献

In this paper, a new type of finned plate heat exchanger (FPHE) is presented to recover the waste heat from exhaust flue gases. A finned plate configuration causes low pressure drop and it is especially appropriate for heat transfer at the flue gas side. Meanwhile, this paper presents a detailed experimental and numerical study of convection heat transfer and pressure drop of the new structure. Three-dimensional numerical simulation results using the CFD code FLUENT6.3 were compared with experimental data to select the best model. The heat transfer and pressure drop with different geometry pattern was then studied numerically using the selected model. And the velocity field and temperature distribution of air flow in the finned plate channel are presented with different geometry patterns. These results provide insight into improved designs of FPHEs.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of the flow dynamics in a channel with a corrugated surface is presented. Particle image velocimetry was used to obtain two-dimensional velocity fields at three different locations along the channel length, over a range of Reynolds numbers. The results show a significant impact of the corrugation waveform on the mean and turbulent flow structure inside the channel. Strong bursting flow originating from the trough, sweeping flow from the bulk region and the vortex shedding off the crest were observed. Their interactions created a complex three-dimensional flow structure extended over almost the entire channel. The mean velocity profiles indicate a strong diffusion of shear. The profiles of various turbulent properties show the enhancement of turbulence in the vicinity of the waveform. It was found that the turbulence in the channel was almost entirely produced in this region above the corrugation trough. Significant momentum transfer from the corrugation wall by the turbulent velocity field was also observed. The mean and turbulent flow behaviour was found to be periodic with respect to the waveform over most of the channel length. The results show the presence of strong turbulence even at the Reynolds number that falls within the conventional laminar range.  相似文献

An optical measurement method for two-phase flow pattern characterization in microtubes has been utilized to determine the frequency of bubbles generated in a microevaporator, the coalescence rates of these bubbles and their length distribution as well as their mean velocity. The tests were run in a 0.5 mm glass channel using saturated R-134a at 30 °C (7.7 bar). The optical technique uses two laser diodes and photodiodes to measure these parameters and to also identify the flow regimes and their transitions. Four flow patterns (bubbly flow, slug flow, semi-annular flow and annular flow) with their transitions were detected and observed also by high speed video. It was also possible to characterize bubble coalescence rates, which were observed here to be an important phenomena controlling the flow pattern transition in microchannels. Two types of coalescence occurred depending on the presence of small bubbles or not. The two-phase flow pattern transitions observed did not compare well to a leading macroscale flow map for refrigerants nor to a microscale map for air–water flows. Time averaged cross-sectional void fractions were also calculated indirectly from the mean two-phase vapor velocities and compared reasonably well to homogeneous values.  相似文献

The flow of a `model' lyotropic liquid crystal polymer, (hydroxypropyl)cellulose in water, through a rectangular channel with a divergence in the channel width, is studied by in situ light microscopy. Microscopic texture observations are related to measurements of the flow velocity field, in order to characterize the shear and elongational aspects of the flow and to examine the effects of the divergence from a narrow channel to a wide channel. A strong dependence of flow-induced texture on position in the channel is observed and is related to the interplay of shear and elongational strain. The divergence generates both a perpendicular elongational strain due to the widening of the channel, and subsequently an elongational strain along the flow direction due to the change in flow pattern from quasi-radial to unidirectional down the wide channel. Additionally side wall structure is observed to be more complex than a simple strong alignment, displaying a fine birefringent texture. Finally there is a marked dependence of the macroscopic structure on the strain history of the fluid prior to entry into the channel, indicating that very different structures of, for instance, moulded parts, can result from differences in geometry and fluid treatment prior to entry into the mould itself. We present a combined experimental–numerical study on fracture initiation at the convex surface and its propagation during bending of a class of ferritic–martensitic steel. On the experimental side, so-called free bending experiments are conducted on DP1000 steel sheets until fracture, realizing optical and scanning electron microscopy analyses on the post mortem specimens for fracture characterization. A blended Mode I – Mode II fracture pattern, which is driven by cavitation at non-metallic inclusions as well as martensitic islands and resultant softening-based intense strain localization, is observed. Phenomena like crack zig-zagging and crack alternation at the bend apex along the bending axis are introduced and discussed. On the numerical side, based on this physical motivation, the process is simulated in 2D plane strain and 3D, using Gurson’s dilatant plasticity model with a recent shear modification, strain-based void nucleation, and coalescence effects. The effect of certain material parameters (initial porosity, damage at coalescence and failure, shear modification term, etc.), plane strain constraint and mesh size on the localization and the fracture behavior are investigated in detail.  相似文献

Background

Soft tribology is increasingly important in the design and engineering of materials used in robotics, haptics, and biomechanics studies. When patterned surfaces are part of a lubricated tribopair that undergoes sliding and compressive deformation, the patterns experience a bending strain that affects the lubrication film thickness and elastohydrodynamic friction. The contribution of bending patterns to soft tribology is not well understood because earlier studies focused on hard tribopairs with effectively flat surfaces.

Objective

We investigate and model the differences in lubricated friction for poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) elastomer and PEGDA/alginate double network hydrogel patterns in order to determine the effect of height-to-width aspect ratio and bending angle on the elastohydrodynamic friction.

Methods

Photoresists of two different viscosities are spin coated onto silicon substrates to fabricate molds with pattern heights ranging from 20 μm to 50 μm.

Results

Tribological characterization of the tribopairs in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime shows that the patterns generate a friction peak that is independent of aspect ratio for short patterns but displays a “power-law fit” decrease with increasing aspect ratio for taller patterns. Two independent models are used to estimate the theoretical bending and deflection angles for the tribopairs.

Conclusions

The decrease in lubricated friction is attributed to taller patterns having large bending angles and a reduced effective surface for fluid load bearing. Results suggest that the bending of micropatterns could be harnessed to engineer lubricated friction in a variety of applications.
