Classroom coaching in mathematics is flexible in its definition, complex in its enactment, variable in its outcomes, and dependent on setting and circumstances. Multiple lines of inquiry are required to navigate this subjective terrain: research on coaching encompasses understanding perceptions of coaching held by coaches, teachers, and administrators, measuring the effectiveness of coaching in terms of teachers’ content knowledge and instructional practices, and exploring the nature of coaching within an educational ecosystem. This paper describes a cumulative sequence of research studies that inform current understanding of classroom coaching in mathematics, highlighting methodological decisions made at various crossroads and elaborating on the populations, methods, and instruments used to investigate coaching. A presentation of findings related to the three domains of perception, effectiveness, and nature is followed by reflections on features of coaching that pose particular challenges, questions that remain to be answered, and promising avenues of future inquiry.  相似文献

In this paper we report findings from a two-year, large-scale research project that describes the work of middle school mathematics specialists (also referred to as mathematics coaches or instructional coaches) who served in 10 school districts. We use mixed methods to describe how mathematics specialists spent their time supporting teachers and how these supports contributed to meaningful changes that teachers made in their instructional practices. We also report results that correlate student achievement scores with whether or not teachers were highly engaged with the mathematics specialists. We coordinate these quantitative results with findings from several case studies to illustrate the qualitatively different ways that mathematics specialists supported teachers’ ongoing work with their students. We also account for why some teachers participated more fully than others. Importantly, because mathematics specialists’ work was situated in different school settings with different demands, resources and administrative supports, these constraints and affordances contributed in part to how they could effectively support teachers’ work with their students.  相似文献

The paper examines the roles and purposes of proof mentioned by university research faculty when reflecting on their own teaching and teaching at their institutions. Interview responses from 14 research mathematicians and statisticians who also teach are reported. The results suggest there is a great deal of variation in the role and purpose of proof in and among mathematics courses and that factors such as the course title, audience, and instructor influence this variation. The results also suggest that, for this diverse group, learning how to prove theorems is the most prominent role of proof in upper division undergraduate mathematics courses and that this training is considered preparation for graduate mathematics studies. Absent were responses discussing proof's role in preparing K-12 mathematics teachers. Implications for a proof and proving landscape for school mathematics are discussed.  相似文献

The article deals with social, psychological and pedagogical aspects of teaching mathematics students at universities. The sociological portrait and the factors influencing a career choice of a mathematician have been investigated through the survey results of 198 first-year students of applied mathematics major at 27 state universities (Russia). Then, psychological characteristics of mathematics students have been examined based on scientific publications. The obtained results have allowed us to reveal pedagogical conditions and specific ways of training mathematics students in the process of their education at university. The article also contains the analysis of approaches to the development of mathematics education both in Russia and in other countries. The results may be useful for teaching students whose training requires in-depth knowledge of mathematics.  相似文献

Many problems arising in the mathematics of finance involve identical money flows at regular time intervals and are typically solved by appropriate valuation at a focal date or by setting up an equation of value. It is shown here that such problems can be viewed as special cases of a certain class of first‐order difference equations. Problems relating to continuous money flows can be viewed analogously as special cases of a certain class of ordinary first‐order differential equations. Students should thus be encouraged to view the concepts and techniques of the mathematics of finance as not being inherently different from those prevalent in more traditional applied mathematics.  相似文献

We conducted a multi‐year study of specialization in elementary mathematics and/or science, using data drawn from a local sample of teachers and a nationwide sample of principals. Using the theory of planned behavior, we compare and contrast teacher and principal views and decision‐making processes related to elementary content specialization (ECS). Survey data indicate that specialist models were conceived as a way to better meet students' academic needs while relieving some of the rigorous demands placed on elementary teachers in the context of new content standards. In contrast, self‐contained classrooms were retained in elementary schools largely due to beliefs that these traditional structures provide the best social and emotional stability for students. After presentation of survey findings, we use three local case studies to present ECS at different stages of maturity (from newly enacted to well‐established), with corresponding discussion of benefits, challenges, and lessons learned. Our case study data indicate that, while newly adopted ECS models tended to face the most challenges, there may still be critical model‐specific concerns at play even when specialization has been ongoing for decades. Our findings have implications for teachers and principals, as well as researchers and professional development providers.  相似文献

Secondary level mathematics education in Ireland has recently experienced a period of significant change with the introduction of new curricula and the addition of an incentive to study upper secondary mathematics at the most advanced level (Higher Level). This incentive, typically referred to as ‘bonus points’, appears to have aided a significant increase in the number of students studying upper secondary mathematics at Higher Level. However, thematic analysis of interviews with experienced upper secondary mathematics examiners and exploration of mathematics diagnostic test data outlined in this paper suggest that the difficulty of the Higher Level upper secondary mathematics final examination in Ireland has reduced since the introduction of the bonus points initiative. The sharp increase in students attempting this examination coupled with a policy of maintaining a consistent proportion of students achieving passing grades was identified as a key reason for this possible reduction in standards.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A literature review establishes a working definition of recreational mathematics: a type of play which is enjoyable and requires mathematical thinking or skills to engage with. Typically, it is accessible to a wide range of people and can be effectively used to motivate engagement with and develop understanding of mathematical ideas or concepts. Recreational mathematics can be used in education for engagement and to develop mathematical skills, to maintain interest during procedural practice and to challenge and stretch students. It can also make cross-curricular links, including to history of mathematics. In undergraduate study, it can be used for engagement within standard curricula and for extra-curricular interest. Beyond this, there are opportunities to develop important graduate-level skills in problem-solving and communication. The development of a module ‘Game Theory and Recreational Mathematics’ is discussed. This provides an opportunity for fun and play, while developing graduate skills. It teaches some combinatorics, graph theory, game theory and algorithms/complexity, as well as scaffolding a Pólya-style problem-solving process. Assessment of problem-solving as a process via examination is outlined. Student feedback gives some indication that students appreciate the aims of the module, benefit from the explicit focus on problem-solving and understand the active nature of the learning.  相似文献

We explore the conjecture that engaging teachers with activities which feature mathematical practices from the past (history-focused tasks) and in today’s mathematics classrooms (mathtasks) can promote teachers’ problematizing of mathematics and its pedagogy. Here, we sample evidence of discursive shifts observed as twelve mathematics teachers engage with a set of problematizing activities (PA) – three rounds of history-focused and mathtask combinations – during a four–month postgraduate course. We trace how the commognitive conflicts orchestrated in the PA triggered changes in the teachers’ narratives about: mathematical objects (such as what a function is); how mathematical objects come to be (such as what led to the emergence of the function object); and, pedagogy (such as what value may lie in listening to students or in trialing innovative assessment practices). Our study explores a hitherto under-researched capacity of the commognitive framework to steer the design, evidence identification and impact evaluation of pedagogical interventions.  相似文献

Open Educational Resources (OER) have the potential to replace commercial learning materials in education. An empirical examination of this potential was conducted, comparing the end-of-year mathematics test results of 12,110 elementary school students clustered within 95 schools from five school districts in the state of Washington in the United States of America. Of this group, 6796 students used open learning materials, and 5314 used commercial educational resources. When three years of test scores were considered, there were no statistically significant differences in the exam scores of students who used open versus commercial curriculum materials. The lack of statistical significance may have practical significance, demonstrating that OER can replace conventional materials without impacting student performance, while potentially reducing costs and allowing for local modification.  相似文献

This observational study used data from 270 second-grade students to investigate the association between students' strategy use for multidigit addition and subtraction and their mathematics achievement. Based on strategies they used during a mathematics interview, students were classified into the following strategy groups: (a) standard algorithm, (b) invented, (c) mixed, and (d) unclassified. We used two-level hierarchical linear regression to investigate the association between students' strategy use and their performance on a standardized test in mathematics. Results indicated that students in the mixed strategy groups had significantly higher mathematics achievement than those in the standard algorithm and the unclassified groups.  相似文献

Lecturers of first-year mathematics often have reason to believe that students enter university studies with naïve conceptions of mathematics and that more mature conceptions need to be developed in the classroom. Students’ conceptions of the nature and role of mathematics in current and future studies as well as future career are pedagogically important as they can impact on student learning and have the potential to influence how and what we teach. As part of ongoing longitudinal research into the experience of a cohort of students registered at the author's institution, students’ conceptions of mathematics were determined using a coding scheme developed elsewhere. In this article, I discuss how the cohort of students choosing to study engineering exhibits a view of mathematics as conceptual skill and as problem-solving, coherent with an accurate understanding of the role of mathematics in engineering. Parallel investigation shows, however, that the students do not embody designated identities as engineers.  相似文献

This study adds to our understanding of science and mathematics teacher leadership in rural schools. Through In Vivo and Concept coding of teacher interviews, we investigated 20 secondary science and mathematics teachers' perceptions of rural teacher leadership during their participation in a three-year professional development program. As the teachers developed as teacher leaders, they broadened their focus from improving their own students' learning to sharing new knowledge learned through the program with other teachers both informally and formally. We compared our program components to the Teacher Leader Model Standards and added an emphasis on the importance of disciplinary content knowledge. We also identified patterns in science and mathematics teacher leadership that are contextually connected to teachers' instruction in rural high poverty schools. Rural teacher leadership included the importance of building strong teacher–student relationships, providing new academic opportunities for students, encouraging students' success, and building community connections.  相似文献

One goal of an undergraduate education in mathematics is to help students develop a productive disposition towards mathematics. A way of conceiving of this is as helping mathematical novices transition to more expert-like perceptions of mathematics. This conceptualization creates a need for a way to characterize students' perceptions of mathematics in authentic educational settings. This article presents a survey, the Mathematics Attitudes and Perceptions Survey (MAPS), designed to address this need. We present the development of the MAPS instrument and its validation on a large (N = 3411) set of student data. Results from various MAPS implementations corroborate results from analogous instruments in other STEM disciplines. We present these results and highlight some in particular: MAPS scores correlate with course grades; students tend to move away from expert-like orientations over a semester or year of taking a mathematics course; and interactive-engagement type lectures have less of a negative impact, but no positive impact, on students' overall orientations than traditional lecturing. We include the MAPS instrument in this article and suggest ways in which it may deepen our understanding of undergraduate mathematics education.  相似文献

The article addresses the problématique of where mathematization is taught in the educational system, and who teaches it. Mathematization is usually not a part of mathematics programs at the upper secondary level, but we argue that physics teaching has something to offer in this respect, if it focuses on solving so-called unformalized problems, where a major challenge is to formalize the problems in mathematics and physics terms. We analyse four concrete examples of unformalized problems for which the formalization involves different order of mathematization and applying physics to the problem, but all require mathematization. The analysis leads to the formulation of a model by which we attempt to capture the important steps of the process of solving unformalized problems by means of mathematization and physicalization.  相似文献

While there is considerable scholarship describing principles for effective professional development, there have been few attempts to examine these principles in practice. In this paper, we identify and examine the particular design features of a mathematics professional development experience provided for middle grades teachers over 14 weeks. The professional development was grounded in a set of mathematical tasks that each had one right answer, but multiple solution paths. The facilitator engaged participants in problem solving and encouraged participants to work collaboratively to explore different solution paths. Through analysis of this collaborative learning environment, we identified five design features for supporting teacher learning of important mathematics and pedagogy in a problem-solving setting. We discuss these design features in depth and illustrate them by presenting an elaborated example from the professional development. This study extends the existing guidance for the design of professional development by examining and operationalizing the relationships among research-based features of effective professional development and the enacted features of a particular design.  相似文献

We report on the survey responses of 51 students attending mathematics bridging courses at a major Australian university, investigating what mathematics, if any, these students had studied in the senior years of schooling and what factors affected their decisions about the level of mathematics chosen. Quantitative findings are augmented by qualitative responses to open-ended questions in the survey as well as excerpts from follow-up emails. The findings show that the major reasons for students taking lower levels of mathematics in senior year(s), or dropping mathematics, include finding enough time for non-mathematics subjects, confidence in mathematical capability, advice and maximizing potential ranking for university admission.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service teachers’ views about the history of mathematics course in which GeoGebra was used. The qualitative research design was used in this study. The participants of the study consisted of 23 pre-service mathematics teachers studying at a state university in Turkey. An open-ended questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. Qualitative data obtained from the pre-service teachers were analyzed by means of content analysis. As a result, it was determined that GeoGebra software was an effective tool in the learning and teaching of the history of mathematics.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The influences on governments for policy changes in schools range across many agencies, including the political party in power. When policies change, the sources of these influences are not always clear. The project whose work is presented in this special issue examines what these changes look like in terms of the differences in assessment tasks of school pupils’ mathematics, over time. In this article we attempt to develop a graph, which we argue will have general applicability internationally, that can help to reveal the sources and nature of those influences. We construct the graph in interaction with an examination of the most recent changes in two countries. We argue that our analysis is a necessary complement to the project’s findings in that it enables us to identify the fields of recontextualisation, their relative strengths in terms of influence and hence conjecture their impact on the mathematics curriculum.  相似文献

It is widely accepted by mathematics educators and mathematicians that most proof-oriented university mathematics courses are taught in a “definition-theorem-proof” format. However, there are relatively few empirical studies on what takes place during this instruction, why this instruction is used, and how it affects students’ learning. In this paper, I investigate these issues by examining a case study of one professor using this type of instruction in an introductory real analysis course. I first describe the professor’s actions in the classroom and argue that these actions are the result of the professor’s beliefs about mathematics, students, and education, as well as his knowledge of the material being covered. I then illustrate how the professor’s teaching style influenced the way that his students attempted to learn the material. Finally, I discuss the implications that the reported data have on mathematics education research.  相似文献
