The natural basalt fiber (BF) was incorporated into EVA composites with environmental‐friendly nickel alginate‐brucite based flame retardant (NiFR), to further improve the flame‐retardant effect and mechanical properties. The flame retardancy of EVA composites were characterized by LOI, UL 94, and cone test. With 55 wt% loading, 3BF/52NiFR had the highest LOI value of 31.9 vol.% in all fiber reinforced composites and pass UL 94V‐0 ratting. And comparing to 55B composite with untreated brucite, 3BF/52NiFR decreased peak of heat release rate by 47.8%, total heat release by 21.9%, and total smoke production by 35.5% and kept more residue 54.0% during cone test. Moreover, 3BF/52NiFR also enhanced the mechanical properties of composites by better compatibility with EVA matrix. BF/NiFR exert synergistic flame‐retardant effect major in promoting charring effect in condensed phase during combustion. The fire‐resisted and rigid BF into the char layer reinforced the intensity of protective barrier which prolonged the residence time of pyrolysis carbonaceous groups degraded from EVA matrix, resulting in less heat and smoke release.  相似文献

In this work, Fe‐montmorillonite (Fe‐MMT) is synthesized and used as a synergistic agent in ethylene vinyl acetate/magnesium hydroxide (EVA/MH) flame retardant formulations. The synergistic effect of Fe‐MMT with magnesium hydroxide (MH) as the halogen‐free flame retardant for ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting the oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, and cone calorimetry test. Compared with that of Na‐MMT, it indicates that the synergistic effects of Fe‐MMT enhance the LOI value of EVA/MH polymer and improve the thermal stability and reduce the heat release rate (HRR). The structure and morphology of nanocomposites are studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties of the EVA composites have also been studied here, indicating that the use of Fe‐MMT reduces the amount of inorganic fillers. MH hence enhances the mechanical properties of the EVA composite while keeping the UL‐94 V‐0 rating. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In order to improve the flame retardancy of glass fibers (GFs) reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composites and eliminate the “wicking effect,” the preparation and application of graphene oxide (GO) modified GFs were investigated in this work. Flame retardant PA6 was prepared by blending graphene oxide modified GFs reinforced PA6 and aluminum diethyl phosphonate. For the GFs reinforced PA6, the limiting oxygen index of the composite increased from 20.6% to 22.3%, and peak heat release rate decreased by 37.2% in cone calorimeter test via introducing graphene oxide onto the surface of GFs. Comparing PA6/GF30/ADP15 and PA6/GF‐GO30/ADP15, LOI of the later increased to 31.2%, the vertical burning test (UL‐94) reached V‐0, and the peak heat release rate decreased by 18.0%. The interface compatibility was greatly improved after the introduction of GO. The sheet structure of the GO on the GFs surface could block the combustible gas spillage and the flow of melt along the GFs, thus significantly attenuating the “wicking effect” and improving the flame retardancy of composites.  相似文献

The functions of nanoclay and three different boron containing substances, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), and boron silicon containing preceramic oligomer (BSi), were studied to improve the flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP)‐nanoclay‐intumescent system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER). The flame retardancy of PP composites was investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and cone calorimeter. According to the results obtained, the addition of 20 wt% intumescent flame retardant (IFR) improved the flame retardancy by increasing the char formation. Addition of clay slightly increases the LOI value and reduces the maximum heat release rate (HRR). Addition of clay also increases the barrier effect due to intumescent char, especially in thin samples. Boron compounds show their highest synergistic effect at about 3 wt% loading. According to UL‐94 test and LOI test, 3 wt% ZnB containing composite shows the highest rating (V0) and BPO4 containing sample shows the highest LOI value (26.5).

Poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) deionized chloride ions and ammonium ions by ionizing in aqueous solution respectively, then combined to form poly (diallyldimethylammonium) and polyphosphate (PAPP) polyelectrolyte complexes as an all‐in‐one flame retardant for polypropylene and its composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. One flame retardant system composed of PAPP and PP, the other flame retardant system composed of PAPP, Polyamide‐6 (PA6) and PP were tested by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, cone calorimeter tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and compared with pure PP. The results showed that the LOI value of PP/PAPP composite can reach 27.5%, and UL‐94 V‐2 rating can be reached at 25 wt% PAPP loading. Meanwhile the cone calorimetry results displayed that the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) were reduced up to 69.3% and 22.5%, respectively, compared with those of pure PP. After adding 5 wt% PA6, the carbon source missing due to the early PAPP decomposition can be made up, and PHRR and THR can be further reduced slightly. The flame retardant mechanism of PAPP was studied by FTIR spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Six‐membered ring of C─N containing conjugate double bonds, cross‐linked phosphate structure formed stable, intumescent, compact char layer which greatly improved the flame retardancy of PP.  相似文献

A type of trialkoxysilane‐containing naphtholoxazine compound (Naph‐boz) was successfully synthesized and combined with ammonium polyphosphate/melamine (APP/ME) as an intumescent flame retardant (IFR) to improve the flame‐retardant efficiency of polyoxymethylene (POM). The Underwriters Laboratories 94 (UL94) vertical burning test, limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectral analysis were used to study the flame‐retardant properties and related mechanism. The results showed that the formulation with 20 wt.% of APP, 6 wt.% of ME, and 4 wt.% of Naph‐boz passed UL94 V‐1 rating, and the LOI value was improved to 40.3%. Compared with pure POM, the IFR with Naph‐boz had greater reduction in peak heat release rate (lower 74.9%) and total heat release (lower 40.2%). SEM images showed that compact and reinforcing charred layer was formed during the POM/IFR/4Naph‐boz samples combustion, which was beneficial at reducing and maintaining low combustion parameters throughout the cone calorimeter test. The synergistic flame‐retardant effect between Naph‐boz and APP/ME was considered as the reason for the improvement in flame retardancy POM. Furthermore, because of the Naph‐boz was conducive to the compatibility between the flame retardants and matrix, the notched Izod impact strength of POM/IFR/4Naph‐boz composite was higher than that of POM/IFR system.  相似文献

The ferrocene‐based polymer (PDPFDE) accompanied with traditional intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system (ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/pentaerythritol (PER) = 3/1, mass ratio) has been used as additive flame retardant in polypropylene (PP), aiming to lower the total loading amount. The thermal stability and fire retardant properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion (UL‐94), and cone calorimetry (CONE). The fire retardant mechanism was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the PP1 with 25 wt% IFR only passed the UL‐94 V‐1 rating, but the PP6 loaded by 0.5 wt% PDPFDE and 22.5 wt% IFR possessed an LOI value of 28.5% and passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating; the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) are decreased by 63% and 43%, respectively, compared with pure PP. In addition, the char residue of PP6 manifested a very compact and smooth surface, indicating a more effective barrier layer. Meanwhile, it was interesting that the addition of PDPFDE evidently improved the impact strength and elongation at break of PP/IFR composites.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the flame retardant properties of boron compounds with respect to aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) in an epoxy system based on bisphenol A epichlorohydrin‐based epoxy resin and cycloaliphatic polyamine‐based hardener. Six different boron compounds including colemanite (C), ulexite (U), boric acid (BA), boric oxide (BO), melamine borate (MB) and guanidinium nonaborate (GB) were used as flame retardant additive. The flame retardant properties of epoxy‐based composites were investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 standards both in vertical and horizontal position, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimeter and scanning electron microscopy. According to flammability test results, boron compounds except for C and U showed better performance than ATH. According to the LOI results, 40% BA containing sample had the highest LOI value of 28.5, while 30% MB, 35% GB and 40% BA containing samples had the highest UL 94V rating (V0). According to the cone calorimeter test results, all boron containing samples had better fire performances than ATH containing sample; 40 wt% BO containing sample showed the lowest peak heat release rate, average heat release rate and total heat release values. Melamine polyphosphate (MPP) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were introduced to polyamide 6 (PA6) by melt blending in order to improve the fire resistance. PA6 composite containing 12% flame retardants with good spinnability was obtained. The flammability of PA6 composite was characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 vertical burning and cone calorimeter (CONE) tests. The results indicated that the LOI value could reach 24.0 vol.% and UL‐94 rating could achieve V2 level at the presence of 12% flame retardants. CONE data demonstrated that peak heat release rate was significantly reduced from 554 kW/m2 of neat PA6 to 368 kW/m2 of the sample containing flame retardants. Thermal analysis indicated that the thermal stability and char formation were improved by the presence of flame retardants. The morphology of residue char was characterized by scanning electron microscopy; and it suggested that a network‐structured protective char layer had been formed. The possible synergism between MPP/HNT and their flame retardant mechanism was also analyzed and discussed. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Intumescent flame retardant (IFR) has received the considerable attention ascribed to the inherent advantages including non‐halogen, low toxicity, low smoke release and environmentally friendly. In this work, a novel charring agent poly (piperazine phenylaminophosphamide) named as PPTA was successfully synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then, a series of flame‐retardant EP samples were prepared by blending with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and PPTA. Combustion tests include oxygen Index (LOI), vertical Burning Test (UL‐94) and cone calorimeter testing, these test results showed that PPTA greatly enhances the flame retardancy of EP/APP. According to detailed results, EP containing 10 wt% APP had a LOI value of 30.2%,but had no enhancement on UL‐94 rating. However, after both 7.5 wt% APP and 2.5 wt% PPTA were added, EP‐7 passed UL‐94 V‐0 rating with a LOI value of 33.0%. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and peak of smoke product rate (PSPR) of EP‐7 were greatly decreased. Meanwhile, the flame‐retardant mechanism of EP‐7 was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TG‐IR) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corresponding results presented PPTA significantly increased the density of char layer, resulting in the good flame retardancy.  相似文献

A novel phosphorus‐containing, nitrogen‐containing, and sulfur‐containing reactive flame retardant (BPD) was successfully synthesized by 1‐pot reaction. The intrinsic flame‐retardant epoxy resins were prepared by blending different content of BPD with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA). Thermal stability, flame‐retardant properties, and combustion behaviors of EP/BPD thermosets were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limited oxygen index (LOI) measurement, UL94 vertical burning test, and cone calorimeter test. The flame‐retardant mechanism of BPD was studied by TGA/infrared spectrometry (TGA‐FTIR), pyrolysis‐gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py‐GC/MS), morphology, and chemical component analysis of the char residues. The results demonstrated that EP/BPD thermosets not only exhibited outstanding flame retardancy but also kept high glass transition temperature. EP/BPD‐1.0 thermoset achieved LOI value of 39.1% and UL94 V‐0 rating. In comparison to pure epoxy thermoset, the average of heat release rate (av‐HRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke release (TSR) of EP/BPD‐1.0 thermoset were decreased by 35.8%, 36.5% and 16.5%, respectively. Although the phosphorus content of EP/BPD‐0.75 thermoset was lower than that of EP/DOPO thermoset, EP/BPD‐0.75 thermoset exhibited better flame retardancy than EP/DOPO thermoset. The significant improvement of flame retardancy of EP/BPD thermosets was ascribed to the blocking effect of phosphorus‐rich intumescent char in condensed phase, and the quenching and diluting effects of abundant phosphorus‐containing free radicals and nitrogen/sulfur‐containing inert gases in gaseous phase. There was flame‐retardant synergism between phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur of BPD.  相似文献

With a shell of starch-melamine-formaldehyde (SMF) resin, core/shell-like ammonium polyphosphate (SMFAPP) is prepared by in situ polymerization, and is characterized by SEM, FTIR and XPS. The shell leads SMFAPP a high water resistance and flame retardance compared with APP in polypropylene (PP). The flame retardant action of SMFAPP and APP in PP are studied using LOI, UL 94 test and cone calorimeter, and their thermal stability is evaluated by TG. The flame retardancy and water resistance of the PP/SMFAPP composite at the same loading is better than that of the PP/APP composite. UL 94 ratings of PP/SMFAPP can reach V-0 at 30 wt% loading. The flame retardant mechanism of SMFAPP was studied by dynamic FTIR, TG and cone calorimeter, etc.  相似文献

The flame retardancy and thermal degradation properties of polypropylene (PP) containing intumescent flame retardant additives, i.e. melamine pyrophosphate (MPyP) and charring‐foaming agent (CFA) were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94, cone calorimeter, microscale combustion calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It has been found that the PP material containing only MPyP does not show good flame retardancy even at 30% additive level. Compared with the PP/MPyP binary system, the LOI values of the PP/MPyP/CFA ternary materials at the same additive loading are all increased, and UL 94 rating is raised to V‐0 from no rating (PP/MPyP). The cone calorimeter results show that the heat release rate and mass loss rate of some ternary materials decrease in comparison with the binary material. The microscale combustion calorimetry results indicate that the sample containing 22.5 wt% MPyP and 7.5 wt% CFA has the lowest heat release rate among all samples. The TGA results show that the thermal stability of the materials increases with the addition of MPyP, while decreases with the addition of CFA. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effect of polyol molecular weight and functionality on nanodispersion of clay in PU/clay nanocomposites and the investigation of their thermal and combustion properties are reported and discussed. Lamellar elastomer polyurethane nanocomposites were synthesized using polyols with different molecular weight and functionality and according to these parameters they show several degrees of dispersion which affect their thermal and combustion behaviour. A barrier effect of clay layer is shown in TGA experiments by a delay of thermal degradation products release in nanocomposite materials compared to the virgin polymer; this barrier effect also leads to formation of char during combustion which lowers the peak of rate of heat release in cone calorimeter tests and eliminates fire-induced dripping of the nanocomposite sample during UL 94 test. However, in order to achieve non-burning behaviour nanocomposite technology must be combined with conventional flame retardant technology.  相似文献

To minimize the loading level of the char-forming phosphorus based flame retardants in the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with reduced flammability, we have developed the flame-retarded PLA nanocomposites by melt blending method incorporating organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and aluminium diethylphosphinate (AlPi) additives. The influence of AlPi and OMMT on flame retardancy and thermal stability of PLA was thoroughly investigated by means of the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL94 test, cone calorimeter, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The experimental results show that the PLA/AlPi/OMMT system has excellent fire retardancy. The LOI value increases from 19% for pristine PLA to 28% for the flame-retarded PLA. Cone calorimeter analysis of the PLA/AlPi/OMMT exhibits a reduction in the peak heat release rate values by 26.2%. Thermogravimetric analysis and SEM of cone calorimeter residues indicate that OMMT significantly enhances the thermal stability, promotes char-forming and suppresses the melt dripping. The research of this study implies that the combining of the flame retardant and organoclay results in a synergistic effect. In addition, the flame-retarded PLA nanocomposite also exhibits notable increase in the impact strength and the elongation at break.  相似文献

A new flame retardant system with organic modified boron nitride (m‐BN) and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) was used in this paper, and the synergistic flame retardancy of m‐BN and IFR on natural rubber (NR) was studied. NR/IFR/m‐BN composites were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis, UL‐94, limiting oxygen index (LOI), tensile testing, cone calorimeter testing, and thermal conductivity testing. When 4 wt% m‐BN was added, the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of the composites were improved. The LOI value of NR/IFR/4 phr m‐BN reached 26.8%, and suppressed fire spread in a UL‐94 test. Compared with pure NR, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) was reduced by 52.2%, the total heat release (THR) was reduced by 27.6%, and CO yields were reduced by 51.4%. As a key aspect of fire safety, the ignition time is effectively delayed to 23 seconds due to the increased thermal conductivity of NR/IFR/m‐BN. Since the synergistic effect of m‐BN effectively improves the flame retardancy of NR, it provides a feasible method for improving the fire safety of polymers.  相似文献

In this work, 12‐tungestocobaltic acid based organic–inorganic hybrid material, [Bmim]6CoW12O40 (CoW) was synthesized and applied as a synergist in polypropylene (PP)/intumescent flame retardant (IFR) composites. The flame retardant properties were investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 vertical burning test, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), cone calorimeter and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) etc. The results showed that the PP composites with 16 wt% IFR and 1 wt% CoW achieves the UL‐94 V‐0 rating and gets a LOI value 28.0. However, only add no less than 25 wt% single IFR, can the PP composites obtain the UL‐94 V‐0 rating, which suggests that CoW has good synergistic effects on flame retardancy of PP/IFR composites. In addition, the SEM and cone calorimeter tests indicated the CoW improves the quality of char layer. The rate of char formation has been enhanced also because of the existence of CoW. It is the combination of a better char quality and a high rate of char formation promoted by CoW that results in the excellent flame retardancy of PP/IFR composites. A novel phosphorus‐containing silicone flame retardant (PDPSI) was prepared by Mannish reaction, and a series of PDPSI/PET composites were prepared by melt blending method. The nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR), and the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) results indicated that PDPSI showed network structure and owned good thermal stability, with the char residue of 62.2% at 800°C. The flame retardancy of PDPSI/PET composites was characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning tests (UL‐94), and cone calorimeter (CCT). The results revealed that the addition amount of PDPSI was 5%, the LOI value of PDPSI/PET composites increased to 27.3%, and UL‐94 test passed V‐0 rating. When the PDPSI loading was 3%, PET composites showed excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression, with a decrease in the peak heat release rate (PHRR) by 71.19% and the total smoke release (TSP) reduced from 14.4 to 11.1m2. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FTIR results of char residue demonstrated that the flame‐retardant mechanism of PDPSI was solid phase flame retardant. PDPSI catalyzed the aromatization reaction of PET to promote the formation of a dense and continuous carbon layer, finally improving the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of PET.  相似文献

Aluminum salts of phosphinic acid mixture of diisobutylphosphinic acid and monoisobutylphosphinic acid (HPA-2TBA-Al) and glass fibres were compounded with polyamide 6 to prepare a series of flame retardant GF/PA6 composites via melt blending. The flame retardance and burning behaviors of the composites were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94), and Cone calorimeter test. The thermal properties and decomposition kinetics were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under N2 atmosphere. Addition of HPA-2TBA-Al results in an increased LOI value, a UL-94 V-0 rating together with a decrease in both the values of PHRR and THR in Cone calorimetric analysis. Visual observations and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) after flame retardant tests confirmed the char-formation which acts as a fire barrier in condense phase. Analysis of cone calorimeter data indicates that gas phase flame retardant mechanism exists in the GFPA6/HPA-2TBA-Al system.  相似文献
