The activity concentration and total annual effective dose of the terrestrial naturally occurring radionuclides (232Th, 226Ra and 40K) were measured in soil and rock samples collected from various locations of Hemavathi river basin in Karnataka, using HPGe detector. The results revealed that activity concentration of radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the soil had geometrical mean values of 16.7 ± 0.6, 33.9 ± 1.2 and 359.9 ± 9.2 Bq kg?1, respectively. In rock samples activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K had geometrical mean values of 20.2 ± 0.7, 18.0 ± 0.9 and 276 ± 9.6 Bq kg?1, respectively. The external Hazard index and indoor hazard index were found to be within safety limits prescribed by European commission 1999 report.  相似文献

In this article, we present results obtained from a radiometric survey that was conducted in the Leepa Valley of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan. The purpose of current study is to appraise the radioactivity levels and the associated health hazards due to the terrestrial radionuclide in soil and rock samples. In this regard, 16 soil and 17 rock samples were collected from different locations of the Leepa Valley. After processing the samples, activity concentrations of primordial (232Th, 226Ra and 40K) and anthropogenic (137Cs) radionuclides were determined using a P-type coaxial high purity germanium detector. From the results obtained the mean activity concentrations of radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the soil samples were found to be 31.25 ± 0.46, 44.1 ± 1.07 and 575 ± 8.89 Bq kg?1 respectively. Whilst, in rock samples 226Ra, 232Th and 40K mean activities were found as 28.46 ± 0.45, 48.63 ± 1.12 and 666.7 ± 9.39 Bq kg?1, respectively. The 137Cs concentration level in soil and rock samples is found to be 15.04 ± 0.29 and 5.7 ± 0.16 Bq kg?1, respectively. The average radium equivalent activity (R aeq) was found as 143.16 and 142.93 Bq kg?1 in soil and rock samples, respectively. These findings are less than the recommended safe value of 370 Bq kg?1 as given in OECD report (1979). The values of external (H ex) and internal hazard index (H in) are also less than unity. Mean value of absorbed dose rate was found as 69.78 nGy h?1 for the soil samples, which is in good agreement with the world wide average value (70 nGy h?1). Mean value of absorbed dose rate from rock samples was found as 70.01 nGy h?1. Mean values of the annual effective dose is also lower than the values reported for different other countries of the world.  相似文献

Summary Due to the widespread use of granites as building and ornamental materials, measurements of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K activities in commercial granites have been carried out using a NaI(Tl)g-ray spectrometer with a matrix-inversion-based spectral stripping technique. The concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in Chinese commercial granite range from 14.5 to 204.7 Bq. kg-1, 16.7 to 186.7 Bq. kg-1and 185.7 to 1745.6 Bq. kg-1, respectively. The mean values of the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in red and pink commercial granites are all higher than those in black and gray commercial ones. The radium equivalent activity (Raeq), the external hazard index (Hex), the internal hazard index (Hin ) and the annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) were also calculated and compared to the international recommended values. Six types of red commercial granites (CBR, MLR, QXR, PBR, JXR, LQR, YDR and TSR) of China do not satisfy the universal standards.  相似文献

Activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs were measured in milk, egg, fruit and fish samples collected around a proposed site for setting up nuclear facilities, near Vishakhapatanam. The activity concentrations of the radionuclides ranged from 0.002 to 10.6, 0.002 to 2.8, 0.1 to 7.2, 3 to 110.8, 0.03 to 3 mBq g?1 for 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs considering analysed food matrices. Natural uranium was measured in drinking water samples and the values were below 15 ppb. The average ingestion dose was 2.07 ± 2.01, 2.81 ± 4.38, 7.66 ± 8.24, 1.28 ± 0.84 and 0.04 ± 0.05 μSv year?1 for 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs in milk, egg, fruit, fish and water. The ingestion dose received was the highest for milk, due to its high ingestion rate. It was observed that 226Ra is the largest contributor of measured radionuclides in this study for the different food matrices analysed due to its high dose conversion factor. The study was carried out as a part of baseline data generation for this region with which future changes in the radiological scenario can be compared.  相似文献

Healing mud core samples were collected in the San Diego River (Southwest Cuba), in order to determine the behaviour of the radioactivity levels of 226Ra, 137Cs, 232Th and 40K and to evaluate their possible radiological impact on peloide therapeutic uses. The radionuclide concentration ranges in healing mud profiles on Bq kg?1 dry weight varied as follows: 226Ra = 22–26, 137Cs = 4.6–33.0, 232Th = 18–31 and 40K = 208–433. The calculated average radium equivalent activity (82 Bq kg?1), total absorbed dose rate (40 nGy h?1), external hazard index (0.23), annual gonadal dose equivalent (280 μSv h?1) and annual effective dose equivalent (48.5 μSv y?1) are less than international recommended values. Hence, the levels of radioactivity in healing muds from San Diego River are not an impediment for its use for medical proposes.  相似文献

Radioactivity levels in soil samples, collected from mid Rechna interfluvial region, Pakistan have been estimated by using gamma ray spectrometric technique. 226Ra, 232Th, the primordial radionuclide 40K and the artificial radionuclide 137Cs have been measured in the soil of the study area. The mean radioactivity levels of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs were found to be 49.0 ± 1.6, 62.4 ± 3.2, 670.6 ± 33.9 and 3.5 ± 0.4 Bq kg−1 respectively. The mean radium equivalent activity (Raeq), outdoor radiation hazard index (H out), indoor radiation hazard index (H in) and terrestrial absorbed dose rate for the area under study were determined as 189.9 ± 8.8 Bq kg−1, 0.51, 0.65 and 70.1 nGy h−1 respectively. The annual effective dose to the public was estimated to be 0.43 mSv. The measured values are comparable with other global radioactivity measurements and are found to be safe for public and environment.  相似文献

The activity concentration of primordial radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in soil samples of Thirthahalli taluk were measured systematically by using a low background HPGe detector coupled to 16 K MCA. The measured activity concentration of 226Ra lies between 5.1?±?0.2 and 79.5?±?1.7 Bq kg?1with an average activity of 25.99 Bq kg?1, 232Th ranges from 5.1?±?0.3 to 95.3?±?2.2 Bq kg?1with an average activity of 33.60 Bq kg?1and that of 40K varies from 18.3?±?1.5 to 833.4?±?17.5 Bq kg?1with an average activity of 175.52 Bq kg?1. Higher concentration of these radionuclides were found in the soil samples where the regional geology is granites. The consequential gamma dose and the corresponding radiation hazard was also estimated and is found to be within the permissible limits. The possible radiological impact on the public was also determined and these results are presented in this paper.  相似文献

Determining radioactivity levels in foodstuffs is of great importance for the protection of human health. In addition, the literature includes few studies related to this subject in Turkey. In this study, gamma spectroscopic system was used in order to measure 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs activity concentrations in vegetables and fruits produced in Elaz?? Region. The average activity concentrations in vegetables was calculated as 0.64 ± 0.26 Bq kg?1 for 226Ra, 0.65 ± 0.14 Bq kg?1 for 232Th, 13.98 ± 1.22 Bq kg?1 for 40K, and 0.54 ± 0.04 Bq kg?1 for 137Cs. The average activity concentrations in fruits were 1.52 ± 0.34, 0.98 ± 0.23, 18.66 ± 1.13 and 0.59 ± 0.16 Bq kg?1, respectively for 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs. Total committed effective dose value was determined as 20 and 30.55 μSv y?1, respectively for vegetables and fruits. The findings were compared with previous data reported for Turkey and other regions of the world.  相似文献

Distribution of natural radionuclide gives significant parameter to assess the presence of gamma radioactivity and its radiological effect in our environment. Natural radionuclides are present in the form of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in soil, rocks, water, air, and building materials. Distribution of natural radionuclides depends on the type of minerals present in the soil and rocks. For this purpose gamma spectrometer is used as tool for finding the concentration of these radionuclides. The activity concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in these soil samples were found to vary from of 8 ± 1 Bq/kg to 50 ± 10 Bq/kg with an average 20 Bq/kg, 7 ± 1–88 ± 16 Bq/kg with an Average 26 Bq/kg and 115 ± 18–885 ± 132 Bq/kg with an average 329 Bq/kg, respectively. In this paper, we are presenting the radiological effect due to distribution of natural radionuclide present in soil of Garhwal Himalaya.  相似文献

As higher radiation levels are associated with granite and Bergama (Pergamon) has increasingly become a large market for granite use over the last years, an extensive investigation was started in 2009. Samples from the granites and soils underlying this area were collected and analyzed by HPGe gamma spectrometry system. The specific activities of the naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were found to be in the range of 29?C111 Bq kg?1 for 226Ra, 35?C87 Bq kg?1 for 232Th and 698?C1100 Bq kg?1 for 40K in granite samples. The ranges of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K activity concentrations for soils were 32?C82, 42?C88 and 667?C1127 Bq kg?1, respectively. From these data radiological parameters were calculated and compared with respective data from the UNSCEAR reports.  相似文献

The naturally occurring radioisotopes such as 238U, 232Th and 40K in the silt samples collected from Moticher lake, Gujarat were evaluated. The activity of 238U, 232Th and 40K was found to be 4.4-9.7 Bq kg−1 with a mean 6.4 ± 1.3 Bq kg−1, 10.5–21.2 Bq kg−1 with a mean 15.6 ± 2.5 Bq kg−1 and 102–231 Bq kg−1 with a mean 160 ± 40 Bq kg−1, respectively. The depth profile study could not reveal any significant vertical correlation on radioactivity levels of 238U, 232Th and 40K. Radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (H ex) and internal hazard index (H int) were calculated by using the activity of 238U or 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in silt samples. Annual Effective Dose Equivalent (AEDE) level in Moticher silt was found to be 24.8 ± 5.0 μSv year−1, which is much lower than the worldwide average value. The relative contribution to dose due to 238U and 232Th series were found to be 14% and 53%, followed by the contribution of 33% due to 40K.  相似文献

The radioactivity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in soil samples around Tarapur vary from 11.5 ± 2.6 to 50.3 ± 6.6, 14.9 ± 0.6 to 40.5 ± 1.2, 18.1 ± 0.4 to 75.0 ± 1.5 and 130.1 ± 1.6 to 295.1 ± 2.6 Bq/Kg respectively. The measured activity concentrations for 238U and 226Ra were compared and found in good agreement with the Indian as well as world average. The average 232Th and 40K concentrations in Tarapur were lower than the Indian average value.  相似文献

Specific activities of natural (40K, 226Ra and 232Th) and anthropogenic (137Cs) radionuclides in 155 beach sand samples collected from Patong, Kamala, Kata, Karon and Nai Yang beaches, which were affected by the 2004 tsunami disaster, in Phuket province, Thailand, have been studied and measured. Experimental results were obtained by using a high-purity germanium detector and gamma spectrometry analysis system. Gamma ray from radioactive standard sources Cesium-137 (137Cs), Cobalt-60 (60Co) and Barium-133 (133Ba) were used to calibrate the measurement system. KCl, two well-known (IAEA/RGU-1 and IAEA/RGTh-1) and IAEA/SL-2 reference materials obtained from the International Atomic Energy Agency were used to analyze and compute the 40K, 226Ra,232Th and 137Cs specific activities in samples from five beaches. The measuring time of each sample is 10,800 s. It was found that the average specific activity of 40K in these areas (2459.14 ± 171.71 Bq/kg) was rather high. Furthermore, the results were also used to evaluate the absorbed dose rates in air (D), the radium equivalent (Raeq), the external hazard index (Hex) and the annual effective dose rate (AEDout) in all beach areas. Moreover, experimental results were compared with the Office of Atoms for Peace research data, Thailand as well as with global radioactivity measurements and evaluations. All of the calculated values (40K, 226Ra, 232Th and 137Cs) were also compared with the recommended values which were proposed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (Exposure to radiation from natural radioactivity in building materials, 1979) and United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (Sources, effects and risk of ionizing radiation, 1988; Exposure from natural sources of radiation, 1993; Sources, effects and risk of ionizing radiation, 2000). The data can be also used to create the radioactive contour maps of the investigated area.  相似文献

Mount Arafat is a sacred place for Muslims. It has been classified as a granodiorite rock which mainly consists of feldspar and quartz, muscovite, etc. During the Hajj and Umra, Muslims visit this holly place and stay there for some time. In order to study the geology and thermal history as well as to assess the radiological hazards due to the presence of primordial radionuclides, systematic studies using petrographic, fission track dating and γ-spectrometric (HPGe) techniques were carried out. Our study yielded fission track age of 9.13 ± 1.05 Ma of the Mount Arafat granodiorite. Rifting, magmatism, volcanism and sea floor spreading that resulted in the formation of Red Sea seems may have altered the original age of the Arafat granodiorite under study to 9.13 ± 1.05 Ma. Measured radioactivity concentrations due to 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be 10.75 ± 3.92, 29.21 ± 4.34 and 664.49 ± 7.45 Bq kg?1, respectively. From the measured radioactivity, gamma index (Iγ) and radium equivalent (Raeq) were calculated as 0.402 and 103.23 Bq kg?1 whereas outdoor external dose (Dout) and annual effective dose (Eout) were estimated to be 40.30 nGyh?1 and 0.045 mSvy?1 respectively. All the above mentioned values are well below the recommended limits. The Mount Arafat thus does not pose any radiological health hazard to the general public.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of 137Cs, 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in Bq/kg from 42 marine sediment samples collected at nine sampling sites were determined in order to establish a radiological baseline along the Venezuelan coast. The radioactivity levels were determined by means of a gamma-ray spectroscopy system using a hyper-pure germanium detector in a low-background configuration. Particle size distribution and total organic matter content were also determined. Activity concentrations of 137Cs were lower than the detection limit of the analytical technique (0.9 Bq/kg) in all studied sites. The results suggest that the variation of grain-size distribution is one of the most important factors influencing the spatial variations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in sediments along the Venezuelan coasts. In all sampling sites, average concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th were lower than the world average values. Activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in coastal marine sediments along the Venezuelan coast could be considered to be low when compared with global average values, indicating that they are not apparently above of the range that might be considered normal or background. These results suggest that the studied sites do not pose any significant radiological threat to the population. The results attained in this study should be of considerable value as baseline data and background reference levels for Venezuelan coastlines.  相似文献

The uptake of natural radioactivity by pasture-grass collected from seven different grasslands of Digor was calculated. The activities of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in pasture-grass were in the range of 21.8 ± 6.3–49.6 ± 13.4, 51.9 ± 13.2–127.7 ± 23.8 and 309.5 ± 33.5–807.3 ± 64.4 Bq kg−1, respectively. The soil to pasture-grass transfer factors were evaluated and determined to be in the range from 0.26 ± 0.13 to 0.69 ± 0.34, 0.64 ± 0.27 to 1.99 ± 0.40 and 0.64 ± 0.014 to 1.40 ± 0.032 for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. The distribution of 226Ra and 232Th in different parts of pasture-grass indicated a decreasing tendency in order of root > stem > leaf. 40K mainly accumulated in stem of pasture-grass and is followed by declining trend stem > leaf > root.

The natural radioactivity levels and some radiological parameters of Turkish Portland cements (PC) originated in various regions were determined in this study. The activity concentration of cement samples for 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were measured using a gamma-ray spectrometer with high purity germanium radiation detector. The PC samples had activity concentrations of 33.0, 16.7, and 239.5 Bq kg−1 for 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K, respectively. The mean value of radium equivalent value (Raeq) was found to be 75.4 Bq kg−1. The radium equivalent values in the cement samples were lower than the acceptable level of 370 Bq kg−1. The calculated radiological parameters were found to be below the acceptance levels.

The activity of the terrestrial primordial radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K are measured for Bidar soil samples. The collected soil samples are analyzed using HPGe detector based on high resolution gamma spectrometric system. The activity of the three radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be in the range of BDL–47.68, 7.65–59.08 and BDL–260.65 Bq kg?1 respectively. The mean gamma absorbed dose rate in air above 1 m from ground is estimated to be 34.47 nGy h?1. Annual effective dose equivalent and the radium equivalent activity were within the limits in the present study and it is found that the activity of the radionuclides are comparable with the worldwide literature values. Also the external hazard indices for the soil samples of Bidar district were within the limit of unity.  相似文献

Concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs are measured in collected soil samples from various locations in the Thrace region of Turkey. The activity concentrations range from 12.82 to 101.75 Bq kg?1 d.w. (dry weight) for 238U, from 5.16 to 73.34 Bq kg?1 d.w. for 232Th, from 185.54 to 5399 Bq kg?1 d.w. for 40K and from 11.42 to 90.73 Bq kg?1 d.w. for 226Ra. In addition to naturally occurring radionuclides, 137Cs activity concentration is determined between 3.05 and 46.78 Bq kg?1 d.w. for soil samples. Determination of the radiological hazard is achieved through calculations of the external terrestrial gamma dose rate in air (nGy h?1) and annual effective dose rate (mSv year?1) and the results are compared with the similar works in different countries.  相似文献

Sand is extensively used in construction of buildings. The presence of natural radioactivity in it results in internal and external exposure to the general public. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the concentration of naturally occurring radio-nuclides, namely 232Th, 226Ra and 40K in sand. In this regard, in continuation of our earlier studies, 42 sand samples were collected from fourteen different locations along the banks of river Indus from Gilgit to Lowarian in the northern part of Pakistan covering an area of ~500 km. In order to measure the specific activities in these samples, a P-type coaxial high purity germanium based gamma-ray spectrometer was used. Average values of the measured activities of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be 45.6 ± 3, 74.73 ± 3 and 339.8 ± 3.6 Bq kg?1, respectively which results in an average absorbed dose rate 83.54 nGy h?1. From the measured activities, average radium equivalent activity was found to be 178.59 Bq kg?1. External and internal hazard indices were also calculated and found to be 0.48 and 0.61, respectively. Average effective dose expected to be received due to the gamma rays was 0.26 mSv y?1. Measured natural radioactivity, hazard indices and effective doses received by the population were found to be within the recommended limits.  相似文献
