The finite particle method (FPM) is a modified SPH method with high order accuracy while retaining the advantages of SPH in modeling problems with free surfaces, moving interfaces, and large deformations. In both SPH and FPM, kernel gradient is necessary in kernel and particle approximation of a field function and its derivatives. In this paper, a new FPM is presented, which only involves kernel function itself in kernel and particle approximation. The kernel gradient is not necessary in the whole computation, and this approach is thus referred to as a kernel gradient free (KGF) SPH method. This is helpful when a kernel function is not differentiable or the resultant kernel gradient is not sufficiently smooth, and thus it is more general in selecting a kernel function. Moreover, different from the original FPM with an asymmetric corrective matrix, in the new FPM, the resultant corrective matrix is symmetric, and this is advantageous in particle approximations. A series of numerical examples have been conducted to show the efficiencies of KGF‐SPH including one‐dimensional mathematical tests of polynomial functions with equal or variable smoothing length and two‐dimensional incompressible fluid flow of shear cavity. It is found that KGF‐SPH is comparable with FPM in accuracy and is flexible as SPH. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A hybrid approach to couple finite difference method (FDM) with finite particle method (FPM) (ie, FDM-FPM) is developed to simulate viscous incompressible flows. FDM is a grid-based method that is convenient for implementing multiple or adaptive resolutions and is computationally efficient. FPM is an improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), which is widely used in modeling fluid flows with free surfaces and complex boundaries. The proposed FDM-FPM leverages their advantages and is appealing in modeling viscous incompressible flows to balance accuracy and efficiency. In order to exchange the interface information between FDM and FPM for achieving consistency, stability, and convergence, a transition region is created in the particle region to maintain the stability of the interface between two methods. The mass flux algorithm is defined to control the particle creation and deletion. The mass is updated by N-S equations instead of the interpolation. In order to allow information exchange, an overlapping zone is defined near the interface. The information of overlapping zone is obtained by an FPM-type interpolation. Taylor-Green vortices and lid-driven shear cavity flows are simulated to test the accuracy and the conservation of the FDM-FPM hybrid approach. The standing waves and flows around NACA airfoils are further simulated to test the ability to deal with free surfaces and complex boundaries. The results show that FDM-FPM retains not only the high efficiency of FDM with multiple resolutions but also the ability of FPM in modeling free surfaces and complex boundaries.  相似文献

A finite volume particle (FVP) method for simulation of incompressible flows that provides enhanced accuracy is proposed. In this enhanced FVP method, a dummy neighbor particle is introduced for each particle in the calculation and used for the discretization of the gradient model and Laplacian model. The error‐compensating term produced by introducing the dummy neighbor particle enables higher order terms to be calculated. The proposed gradient model and Laplacian model are applied in both pressure and pressure gradient calculations. This enhanced FVP scheme provides more accurate simulations of incompressible flows. Several 2‐dimensional numerical simulations are given to confirm its enhanced performance.  相似文献

This paper presents a computational model for free surface flows interacting with moving rigid bodies. The model is based on the SPH method, which is a popular meshfree, Lagrangian particle method and can naturally treat large flow deformation and moving features without any interface/surface capture or tracking algorithm. Fluid particles are used to model the free surface flows which are governed by Navier–Stokes equations, and solid particles are used to model the dynamic movement (translation and rotation) of moving rigid objects. The interaction of the neighboring fluid and solid particles renders the fluid–solid interaction and the non‐slip solid boundary conditions. The SPH method is improved with corrections on the SPH kernel and kernel gradients, enhancement of solid boundary condition, and implementation of Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes turbulence model. Three numerical examples including the water exit of a cylinder, the sinking of a submerged cylinder and the complicated motion of an elliptical cylinder near free surface are provided. The obtained numerical results show good agreement with results from other sources and clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented meshfree particle model in modeling free surface flows with moving objects. This paper presents a new smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model for simulating multiphase fluid flows with large density ratios. The new SPH model consists of an improved discretization scheme, an enhanced multiphase interface treatment algorithm, and a coupled dynamic boundary treatment technique. The presented SPH discretization scheme is developed from Taylor series analysis with kernel normalization and kernel gradient correction and is then used to discretize the Navier‐Stokes equation to obtain improved SPH equations of motion for multiphase fluid flows. The multiphase interface treatment algorithm involves treating neighboring particles from different phases as virtual particles with specially updated density to maintain pressure consistency and a repulsive interface force between neighboring interface particles into the pressure gradient to keep sharp interface. The coupled dynamic boundary treatment technique includes a soft repulsive force between approaching fluid and solid particles while the information of virtual particles are approximated using the improved SPH discretization scheme. The presented SPH model is applied to 3 typical multiphase flow problems including dam breaking, Rayleigh‐Taylor instability, and air bubble rising in water. It is demonstrated that inherent multiphase flow physics can be well captured while the dynamic evolution of the complex multiphase interfaces is sharp with consistent pressure across the interfaces.

In this paper, the performance of the incompressible SPH (ISPH) method and an improved weakly compressible SPH (IWCSPH) method for free surface incompressible flows are compared and analyzed. In both methods, the Navier–Stokes equations are solved, and no artificial viscosity is used. The ISPH algorithm in this paper is based on the classical SPH projection method with common treatments on solid boundaries and free surfaces. The IWCSPH model includes some advanced corrective algorithms in density approximation and solid boundary treatment (SBT). In density approximation, the moving least squares (MLS) approach is applied to re‐initialize density every several steps to obtain smoother and more stable pressure fields. An improved coupled dynamic SBT algorithm is implemented to obtain stable pressure values near solid wall areas and, thus, to minimize possible numerical oscillations brought in by the solid boundaries. Three representative numerical examples, including a benchmark test for hydrostatic pressure, a dam breaking problem and a liquid sloshing problem, are comparatively analyzed with ISPH and IWCSPH. It is demonstrated that the present IWCSPH is more attractive than ISPH in modeling free surface incompressible flows as it is more accurate and more stable with comparable or even less computational efforts. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is a powerful tool for modeling solid mechanics problems, especially for large deformation problems. However, it suffers from boundary deficiency and difficulty of boundary condition treatment. In this work, a normalized SPH method is proposed to overcome these problems. The method is based on a newly developed normalized particle approximation. To derive this particle approximation, a normalized kernel approximation which is accurate for derivatives of linear functions everywhere in a problem domain is constructed, and all integral terms of the normalized kernel approximation including boundary terms are discretized by particle summations. The normalized particle approximation is free of matrix inversion, consequently attractive in computational stability and simplicity compared with other corrective particle approximations. Its approximation accuracy is demonstrated by calculating derivatives of test functions. Based on this particle approximation, the formulation of the normalized SPH method for transient solid mechanics problems is derived. Moreover, a direct method of treating traction boundary conditions is presented by making use of the boundary term of the normalized particle approximation. The accuracy and capability of the normalized SPH method are validated by the calculation of elastic wave propagation in solids and compared with commonly used SPH method.

We derive a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approximation for anisotropic dispersion that only depends upon the first derivative of the kernel function and study its numerical properties. In addition, we compare the performance of the newly derived SPH approximation versus an implementation of the particle strength exchange (PSE) method and a standard finite volume method for simulating multiple scenarios defined by different combinations of physical and numerical parameters. We show that, for regularly spaced particles, given an adequate selection of numerical parameters such as kernel function and smoothing length, the new SPH approximation is comparable with the PSE method in terms of convergence and accuracy and similar to the finite volume method. On other hand, the performance of both particle methods (SPH and PSE) decreases as the degree of disorder of the particle increases. However, we demonstrate that in these situations the accuracy and convergence properties of both particle methods can be improved by an adequate choice of some numerical parameters such as kernel core size and kernel function. In this paper, an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is presented to solve unsteady free-surface flows. Both Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids are considered. In the case of viscoelastic fluids, both the Maxwell and Oldroyd-B models are investigated. The proposed SPH method uses a Poisson pressure equation to satisfy the incompressibility constraints. The solution algorithm is an explicit predictor-corrector scheme and employs an adaptive smoothing length based on density variations. To alleviate the numerical difficulties encountered when fluid is highly stretched, an artificial stress term is incorporated into the momentum equation which reduces the risk of unrealistic fractures in the material. Two challenging test cases, the impacting drop and the jet buckling problems, are solved to demonstrate the capability of the proposed scheme in handling viscoelastic flows with complex free surfaces. The jet buckling test case was solved for a wide range of Weissenberg numbers. It was shown that in all cases the method is stable and fairly accurate and agrees well with the available data.  相似文献

基于光滑粒子流体动力学SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics)方法对Oldroyd-B黏弹性液滴撞击固壁面产生的弹跳行为进行了模拟与分析。

Second‐order accurate projection methods for simulating time‐dependent incompressible flows on cell‐centred grids substantially belong to the class either of exact or approximate projections. In the exact method, the continuity constraint can be satisfied to machine‐accuracy but the divergence and Laplacian operators show a four‐dimension nullspace therefore spurious oscillating solutions can be introduced. In the approximate method, the continuity constraint is relaxed, the continuity equation being satisfied up to the magnitude of the local truncation error, but the compact Laplacian operator has only the constant mode. An original formulation for allowing the discrete continuity equation to be satisfied to machine‐accuracy, while using a finite volume based projection method, is illustrated. The procedure exploits the Helmholtz–Hodge decomposition theorem for deriving an additional velocity field that enforces the discrete continuity without altering the vorticity field. This is accomplished by solving a second elliptic field for a scalar field obtained by prescribing that its additional discrete gradients ensure discrete continuity based on the previously adopted linear interpolation of the velocity. The resulting numerical scheme is applied to several flow problems and is proved to be accurate, stable and efficient. This paper has to be considered as the companion of: 'F. M. We introduce a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) concept for the stabilization of the interface between 2 fluids. It is demonstrated that the change in the pressure gradient across the interface leads to a force imbalance. This force imbalance is attributed to the particle approximation implicit to SPH. To stabilize the interface, a pressure gradient correction is proposed. In this approach, the multi‐fluid pressure gradients are related to the (gravitational and fluid) accelerations. This leads to a quasi‐buoyancy correction for hydrostatic (stratified) flows, which is extended to nonhydrostatic flows. The result is a simple density correction that involves no parameters or coefficients. This correction is included as an extra term in the SPH momentum equation. The new concept for the stabilization of the interface is explored in 5 case studies and compared with other multi‐fluid models. The first case is the stagnant flow in a tank: The interface remains stable up to density ratios of 1:1000 (typical for water and air), in combination with artificial wave speed ratios up to 1:4. The second and third cases are the Rayleigh‐Taylor instability and the rising bubble, where a reasonable agreement between SPH and level‐set models is achieved. The fourth case is an air flow across a water surface up to density ratios of 1:100, artificial wave speed ratios of 1:4, and high air velocities. The fifth case is about the propagation of internal gravity waves up to density ratios of 1:100 and artificial wave speed ratios of 1:4. It is demonstrated that the quasi‐buoyancy model may be used to stabilize the interface between 2 fluids up to high density ratios, with real (low) viscosities and more realistic wave speed ratios than achieved by other weakly compressible SPH multi‐fluid models. Real wave speed ratios can be achieved as long as the fluid velocities are not very high. Although the wave speeds may be artificial in many cases, correct and realistic wave speed ratios are essential in the modelling of heat transfer between 2 fluids (eg, in engineering applications such as gas turbines).  相似文献

In this paper, a method that can be used to model low Reynolds number incompressible flows with curved boundaries using SPH was presented. In contrast to that usually used for the flows with flat and straight boundaries, the hydrostatic pressure gradient is treated as a variable body force in this method, and thus, it can be applied to simulate the flows with curved boundaries. Three numerical examples of low Reynolds number incompressible flows, including Poiseuille flow, flow in a section of blood vessel with a local expansion, and flow between inclined plates were calculated to test the method. The results obtained with the proposed method were in good agreement with the analytical solutions. It implies that the method presented in this paper can be successfully used to simulate low Reynolds number incompressible flows not only with flat and straight boundaries but also with curved boundaries. In this paper a truly incompressible version of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is presented to investigate the surface wave overtopping. SPH is a pure Lagrangian approach which can handle large deformations of the free surface with high accuracy. The governing equations are solved based on the SPH particle interaction models and the incompressible algorithm of pressure projection is implemented by enforcing the constant particle density. The two‐equation kε model is an effective way of dealing with the turbulence and vortices during wave breaking and overtopping and it is coupled with the incompressible SPH numerical scheme. The SPH model is employed to reproduce the experiment and computations of wave overtopping of a sloping sea wall. The computations are validated against the experimental and numerical data found in the literatures and good agreement is observed. Besides, the convergence behaviour of the numerical scheme and the effects of particle spacing refinement and turbulence modelling on the simulation results are also investigated in further detail. The sensitivity of the computed wave breaking and overtopping on these issues is discussed and clarified. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Anisotropic diffusion phenomenon in fluids is simulated using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). A new SPH approximation for diffusion operator, named anisotropic SPH approximation for anisotropic diffusion (ASPHAD), is derived. Basic idea of the derivation is that anisotropic diffusion operator is first approximated by an integral in a coordinate system in which it is isotropic. The coordinate transformation is a combination of a coordinate rotation and a scaling in accordance with diffusion tensor. Then, inverse coordinate transformation and particle discretization are applied to the integral to achieve ASPHAD. Noting that weight function used in the integral approximation has anisotropic smoothing length, which becomes isotropic under the inverse transformation. ASPHAD is general and unique for both isotropic and anisotropic diffusions with either constant or variable diffusing coefficients. ASPHAD was numerically examined in some cases of isotropic and anisotropic diffusions of a contaminant in fluid, and the simulation results are very consistent with corresponding analytical solutions. In this work, a corrected symmetric and periodic density reinitialized SPH (CSPDR‐SPH) method is proposed and extended to simulate the viscoelastic free surface flows based on the Phan–Thien–Tanner model. The improvements mainly lie in deriving a corrected symmetric kernel gradient, and combining it with a periodic density reinitialization procedure. In addition, a simple artificial viscosity and a simple artificial stress form are adopted. Thus, the CSPDR‐SPH method has higher accuracy and better stability than the SPH method, and conserves both linear and angular momentums. The consistency and convergence of the CSPDR‐SPH method are justified by approximating a function in one and two dimensions. The merits of CSPDR‐SPH method are demonstrated by several benchmarks. The simple flow in a two‐dimensional channel is investigated to show the capability of the CSPDR‐SPH method to simulate the viscoelastic free surface flow. Then the CSPDR‐SPH method is extended to simulate the impacting drop problem. Numerical results show that the CSPDR‐SPH method can precisely capture the viscoelastic free surface. The Reynolds number, Weissenberg number and elongation parameter have remarkable effect on the flows. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is one of the powerful Lagrangian tools for modeling free surface flows. However, it suffers from particle disorder, which leads to interpolation and numerical errors. To overcome this problem, several techniques have been introduced until now, among which the particle shifting technique (PST) based on Fick's law is an efficient one. The current form of this method needs tuning parameters to fulfill numerical stability criteria. In this study, to eliminate calibration factors, a new shifting coefficient is derived theoretically based on particle positions before and after shifting, regardless of other parameters such as velocity, pressure, time step intervals, etc. The only required input is particle positions, and the main concern is conserving particle densities in their updated positions. In addition to the proposed PST, a new distribution index (DI) is introduced for measuring the spatial uniformity of particles. Furthering the research, some novel treatments are also studied to improve particle movements near free surface boundary. The proposed idea is only assessed for ISPH method in this study, and its performance in other SPH schemes needs more investigations. Following this innovative method, it is validated by modeling different cases including dam break flow, paddle movement, and elliptical water drop. In all cases, particle arrangements have been improved by means of the modified shifting method. In that sense, good agreements between simulation results with experimental data, analytical solutions, and other numerical methods approve the ability of the developed method in simulating free surface flows.  相似文献
