High-spin states in the 97Tc nucleus have been studied by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy with the reaction 82Se(19F,4nγ) at 68 MeV incident energy. Excited states have been observed up to about 8 MeV excitation and spin 43/2. The observed
level scheme is compared with results of shell model calculations.

The 32S + 100Mo and 36S + 96Mo fusionlike reactions were studied at incident energy of E
lab = 298 MeV and 320 MeV, respectively, with the aim of probing the influence of the entrance channel charge asymmetry on the
dipole γ-ray emission. The excitation energy and spin distribution of the compound nucleus created in these reactions were
identical, the only difference being associated with the unequal charge asymmetry of the two entrance channels. High-energy
γ-rays were detected in an array of 9 seven-pack BaF2 clusters. Coincidence with fusionlike residues detected in four PPAC ensured the selection of central reaction events. By
studying the differential γ-ray multiplicity associated with the two reactions it was shown that the dipole strength excited
in the compound nucleus increases with the entrance channel charge asymmetry. From the linearized spectra, the increase of
the GDR γ-ray intensity was found to be ∼ 25% for the more charge asymmetric system. The results are discussed and compared
with those of previous data obtained at different incident energies.

The even-even nucleus 136Nd was studied via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using the 16O + 125Te reaction at 100 MeV and the EUROBALL array. One new dipole band was observed. Together with a previously identified dipole
band, whose position in the level scheme is revised, the new band forms a doublet structure similar to the recently observed
chiral bands in the odd-odd neighboring nuclei. This would be the first case of a chiral doublet in an even-even nucleus.

High-spin states in 161Lu and 162Lu have been investigated using the GASP γ-ray spectrometer array. Excited states in these nuclei have been populated through
the 100Mo(65Cu, xn) reaction at a beam energy of 260 MeV. Four presumably triaxial superdeformed bands, three in 162Lu and one in 161Lu, have been observed. This is the first evidence for triaxial superdeformation in the two isotopes.

Excited states of 99Ag were populated via the 50Cr + 58Ni (261 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction
channel separation. On the basis of the measured γγ-coincidence relations and angular distribution ratios a significantly
extended level scheme has been constructed up to E

We report on the results obtained from the study of the 32S +74Ge deep inelastic reaction at incident energy E= 320 MeV. High-energy γ-rays were detected in an array of 6 seven-pack BaF2 clusters. Coincidence with complex fragments detected in 12 three-stage telescopes ensured the selection of peripheral reaction
events. In order to investigate the pre-equilibrium dipole strength excitation two independent analyses were performed. In
the first analysis the energy spectra of the γ-rays were evaluated in the statistical model framework while in the second
one the γ-ray fragment angular correlation with respect to the nuclear spin vector of the composite system was studied. Both
methods indicate the excitation of dipole strength in the highly deformed dinucleus and provide dipole resonance parameter
sets that are in good agreement with each other.

High-spin states of the 42Ca nucleus, populated in the 68 MeV 18O + 30Si reaction, have been studied in a γ-γ-recoil coincidence experiment. The level scheme of 42Ca has been extended up to 13.7 MeV. An elaborate decay pattern with various paths, together with high-quality DCO and polarization
information assigns spins and parities for almost all observed levels. The sequence of non-yrast positive-parity states is
discussed and compared with highly deformed bands in 36Ar and 40Ca.

Differential cross-sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been
measured using the Glasgow/Mainz photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator together with the Mainz [48]cm
;SPMOslash; × [64]cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the G?ttingen SENECA recoil detector. The data cover photon energies ranging from [200]MeV
to [400]MeV at θLAB
γ = 136.2°. Liquid deuterium and hydrogen targets allowed direct comparison of free and quasi-free scattering from the proton. The neutron
detection efficiency of the SENECA detector was measured via the reaction p(γ,π+
n). The “free” proton Compton scattering cross-sections extracted from the bound proton data are in reasonable agreement with
those for the free proton which gives confidence in the method to extract the differential cross-section for free scattering
from quasi-free data. Differential cross-sections on the free neutron have been extracted and the difference of the electromagnetic
polarizabilities of the neutron has been determined to be αn - βn = 9.8±3.6(stat)+2.1
-1.1(syst)±2.2(model) in units of [10-4]fm
3. In combination with the polarizability sum αn + βn = 15.2±0.5 deduced from photoabsorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, αn = 12.5±1.8(stat)+1.1
-0.6(syst)±1.1(model) and βn = 2.7±1.8(stat)+0.6
-1.1(syst)±1.1(model) are obtained. The backward spin polarizability of the neutron was determined to be γ(n)
π = (58.6±4.0)×10-4
fm

The high energy γ-rays from the fusion-evaporation reaction 101 MeV 19F +181Ta have been measured in coincidence with different γ-ray fold windows or discrete γ-rays in final residual nuclei. The line-shape
analysis of the high energy γ-ray spectra confirms the large deformation of the 200Pb nuclei at high angular momenta. Coincidences with discrete γ-transitions evidence a strong correlation between γ-rays in
the Giant Dipole Resonance region (Eγ≥ 8 MeV) and final evaporation residues.

A kinematically complete measurement was made of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B nuclei on a Pb target at 83 MeV/nucleon. The cross-section was measured at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical
S-factor for the 7Be(p,γ)8B reaction. A first-order perturbation theory analysis of the reaction dynamics including E1, E2, and M1 transitions was employed to extract the E1 strength relevant to neutrino-producing reactions in the solar interior. By fitting the measured cross-section from E
rel = 130 keV to 400 keV, we find S
17(0) = 17.8+1.4
-1.2 eV b. Semiclassical 1st-order perturbation theory and fully quantum-mechanical continuum-discretized coupled-channels analyses
yield nearly identical results for the E1 strength relevant to solar-neutrino flux calculations, suggesting that theoretical reaction mechanism uncertainties need
not limit the precision of Coulomb-breakup determinations of the 7Be(p,γ)8B S-factor. A recommended value of S
17(0) based on a weighted average of this and other measurements is presented. This recommendation implies a revised value for
the theoretical flux of 8B solar neutrinos, which is also given.-1

Electromagnetic properties of the low-lying states in a 70Ge nucleus were studied through the multiple Coulomb excitation of a 70Ge beam with a natPb target. Relative γ-ray intensities were measured as a function of emission angle relative to the scattered projectile.
Sixteen E2 matrix elements, including diagonal ones, for 6 low-lying states have been determined using the least-squares search code
GOSIA. The expectation values 〈Q
2〉 of 01
+ and 02
+ states in 70Ge are compared with those in 72, 74, 76Ge. Simple mixing calculations indicate that the 02
+ states in 70Ge and 72Se can be treated as deformed intruder states. It is shown that the deformed intruder becomes the ground state in 74Kr. These interpretations of the 02
+ states in this region are compared with the potential-energy surface calculations by the Nilsson-Strutinsky model, which
allow to interpret the experimental results in a qualitative way from the theoretical point of view.

The 109,111,113Rh nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in the fusion reaction 18O + 208Pb at 85 MeV. Their level schemes have been built from gamma-rays detected using the Euroball IV array. High-spin states of
the neutron-rich 111,113Rh nuclei have been identified for the first time. Several rotational bands with the odd proton occupying the πg
9/2, πp
1/2 and π(g
7/2/d
5/2) sub-shells have been observed. A band of low-energy transitions has been identified at excitation energy around 2 MeV in
109,111Rh, which can be interpreted in terms of three-quasiparticle excitation, πg
9/2νh
11/2νg
7/2/d
5/2. In addition another structure built on states located at low excitation energy (608 keV in 111Rh, 570 keV in 113Rh) points out that, as already observed in the lighter isotopes 107,109Rh, triaxial deformation plays a role in the neutron-rich Rh isotopes well beyond the mid-shell.

The 106, 108Rh and 110, 112Ag nuclei have been produced as fission fragments following the fusion reaction 28Si + 176Yb at 145 MeV bombarding energy and studied with the Eurogam2 array. The yrast high-spin states of these four odd-odd nuclei,
which are observed for the first time, consist of rotational bands in which the odd proton occupies the πg
9/2 subshell and the odd neutron the νh
11/2 subshell. Their behaviour as a function of spin values does not vary with the number of neutrons: as observed in the odd-N neighbouring nuclei, the motion of the odd neutron remains decoupled from the motion of the core, from N = 61 to N = 65. Moreover, the staggering observed in the yrast bands of odd-odd isotopes is strongly reduced as compared to the large
values displayed by the rotational bands built on the πg
9/2 subshell in the odd-A Rh and Ag isotopes. The results of particle-rotor calculations indicate that this reduction is related to a change of the
core deformation.

The beta-decay of the N = Z, even-even nucleus 72Kr has been studied at the ISOLDE PSB facility at CERN. Measurements of βγ and βγγ coincidences have enriched the decay scheme
of the daughter nucleus 72Br with 27 new low spin levels. A more precise half-life of T
1/2 = 17.1(2) s has been determined. Strong feeding to the 72Br ground state is established yielding an unambiguous J
π = 1+ assignment for this state. Candidates for the 72Br g.s. wave function are discussed in the framework of a self-consistent deformed mean-field calculation with SG2 Skyrme
force and pairing correlations. A search for beta-delayed particle emission was made and an upper limit of 10-6 for this decay branch obtained. The cumulated experimental level density of 1+ states has been fitted with the constant temperature formula. The comparison indicates that most likely all 1+ levels up to 1.2 MeV have been observed in this investigation. The corresponding nearest-neighbour level spacing does not
follow a Poisson distribution. The Gamow-Teller strength distribution is compared, in terms of nuclear deformation, with different
calculations made in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation.

We discuss the applicability of pQCD to the elastic scattering of electrons on protons and deuterons. We analyze the Q2-dependence of the reduced deuteron form factor, taking into account the recent data on the electric proton form factor and
we find that the value of the QCD-scale parameter Λ differs essentially from the value Λ = 0.1 GeV, previously found using
the dipole parametrization of the electromagnetic nucleon form factors GE and GM. Moreover, the predicted scaling behavior of the reduced deuteron form factor cannot be recovered in the Dirac and Pauli
representations for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

The 115, 117, 119, 121In nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in three reactions induced by heavy ions: 12C + 238U at 90MeV bombarding energy, 18O + 208Pb reaction at 85MeV, and 31P + 176Yb at 152MeV. Their level schemes have been built from gamma-rays detected using the EUROBALL III and IV arrays. High-spin
states of 117, 119, 121In nuclei have been identified for the first time. Moreover, isomeric states lying around 2.5MeV have been established in
119, 121In from the delayed coincidences between the fission fragment detector SAPhIR and the gamma array. Most of the observed states
can be described by coupling a proton g
9/2 hole to a Sn core, while the intruder band based on an orbital from the π[g
7/2/d
5/2] sub-shells behaves as the ground-state band of neighbouring Cd isotopes.
