Only the utterly simple crimes - the simplex crimes, you may say - have the trick of remaining baffling. - Sir John (from Michael Innes,The Open House (A Sir John Appleby Mystery), Penguin Books, 1974).A dual simplex method for the assignment problem leaves open to choice the activity (i,j) of rowi and columnj that is to be dropped in pivoting so long asx ij < 0. A choice (i,j) over columnsj having at least 3 basic activities that minimizesx ij is shown to converge in at most ( 2 n-1 ) pivots, and at most O(n 3) time, and it is argued that on average the number of pivots is at mostn logn. This paper deals with the Stochastic Generalised Assignment problem. It presents several models for the special case when demands are independent and Bernoulli distributed. Each model designs an assignment structure before the demands are known. Two policies are considered to handle infeasibilities in particular instances of the demands vector. In this paper we show that the complexity of the simplex method for the linear fractional assignment problem (LFAP) is strongly polynomial. Although LFAP can be solved in polynomial time using various algorithms such as Newton’s method or binary search, no polynomial time bound for the simplex method for LFAP is known.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider an optimization problem which aims to minimize a convex function over the weakly efficient set of a multiobjective programming problem. To solve such a problem, we propose an inner approximation algorithm, in which two kinds of convex subproblems are solved successively. These convex subproblems are fairly easy to solve and therefore the proposed algorithm is practically useful. The algorithm always terminates after finitely many iterations by compromising the weak efficiency to a multiobjective programming problem. Moreover, for a subproblem which is solved at each iteration of the algorithm, we suggest a procedure for eliminating redundant constraints.  相似文献

We propose a new algorithm for the classical assignment problem. The algorithm resembles in some ways the Hungarian method but differs substantially in other respects. The average computational complexity of an efficient implementation of the algorithm seems to be considerably better than the one of the Hungarian method. In a large number of randomly generated problems the algorithm has consistently outperformed an efficiently coded version of the Hungarian method by a broad margin. The factor of improvement increases with the problem dimensionN and reaches an order of magnitude forN equal to several hundreds.Work supported by Grant NSF ENG-7906332.  相似文献

Several pivot rules for the dual network simplex algorithm that enable it to solve a maximum flow problem on ann-node,m-arc network in at most 2nm pivots and O(n 2 m) time are presented. These rules are based on the concept of apreflow and depend upon the use of node labels which are either the lengths of a shortestpseudoaugmenting path from those nodes to the sink node orvalid underestimates of those lengths. Extended versions of our algorithms are shown to solve an important class of parametric maximum flow problems with no increase in the worst-case pivot and time bounds of these algorithms. For the linear assignment problem we describe how to obtain different dual solutions. It turns out that a shortest path algorithm can be used to compute such solutions with several interesting properties that enable to do better post-optimality analysis.Two examples illustrate how different dual solutions can be used in the context of the traveling salesman problem.  相似文献

This paper reports on an experimental study of the distribution of the length of simplex paths for the Optimal Assignment Problem. We study the distribution of the pivot counts for a version of the simplex method that with essentially equal probabilities introduces any variable with negative reduced cost into the basis. In this situation the distribution of the pivot counts turns out to be normally distributed and independent of the actual cost coefficients, provided these are sufficiently spread out. Further, the mean and standard deviation grow only moderately with the size of the problem, namely asd 1.8, andd 1.5 respectively for ad×d problem, implying in particular that the pivot counts concentrate around the mean with growingd. The usual simplex method on the other hand gives a growth ofd 1.6. Hence a large part of the favourable polynomial growth experienced on practical problems may be attributed to the fact that the simplex paths are rather short on the average, at least for assignment problems.  相似文献

In the Frequency Assignment Problem with Polarization (FAPP), a given set of links must each be assigned a frequency and a polarization, while respecting given radio-electric compatibility constraints defined on pairs of links. In this paper, we propose a tabu search algorithm for the FAPP. A specialized neighborhood is proposed for the problem. Other key features of the algorithm are an adaptive technique to adjust the tabu tenure, an original diversification technique, and a pre-processing procedure based on arc-consistency techniques. The algorithm is tested on the 40 instances of the ROADEF Challenge 2001. For assignment problems a class of objective functions is studied by algebraic methods and characterized in terms of an axiomatic system. It says essentially that the coefficients of the objective function can be chosen from a totally ordered commutative semigroup, which obeys a divisibility axiom. Special cases of the general model are the linear assignment problem, the linear bottleneck problem, lexicographic multicriteria problems,p-norm assignment problems and others. Further a polynomial bounded algorithm for solving this generalized assignment problem is stated. The algebraic approach can be extended to a broader class of combinatorial optimization problems.  相似文献

We present a sequential dual-simplex algorithm for the linear problem which has the same complexity as the algorithms of Balinski [3,4] and Goldfarb [8]: O(n2) pivots, O(n2 log n + nm) time. We develop and test a heuristic based on Lagrangian relaxation and problem space search to solve the generalized assignment problem (GAP). The heuristic combines the iterative search capability of subgradient optimization used to solve the Lagrangian relaxation of the GAP formulation and the perturbation scheme of problem space search to obtain high-quality solutions to the GAP. We test the heuristic using different upper bound generation routines developed within the overall mechanism. Using the existing problem data sets of various levels of difficulty and sizes, including the challenging largest instances, we observe that the heuristic with a specific version of the upper bound routine works well on most of the benchmark instances known and provides high-quality solutions quickly. An advantage of the approach is its generic nature, simplicity, and implementation flexibility.  相似文献

We propose a new pivot rule for the simplex algorithm, which is demonstrative in the dual space intuitively. Although it is based on normalized reduced costs, like the steepest-edge rule and its variants, the rule is much simpler and cheaper than the latter. We report computational results obtained with the 47 largest Netlib problems in terms of the number of rows and columns, all of the 16 Kennington problems, and the 17 largest BPMPD problems. Over the total 80 problems, a variant of the rule outperformed the Devex rule with iterations and time ratio 1.43 and 3.24, respectively.  相似文献

This paper presents dual network simplex algorithms that require at most 2nm pivots and O(n 2 m) time for solving a maximum flow problem on a network ofn nodes andm arcs. Refined implementations of these algorithms and a related simplex variant that is not strictly speaking a dual simplex algorithm are shown to have a complexity of O(n 3). This and a companion paper consider how current implementations of the simplex method may be adapted to better solve linear programs that have a staged, or staircase, structure. The present paper looks at inversion routines within the simplex method, particularly those for sparse triangular factorization of a basis by Gaussian elimination and for solution of triangular linear systems. The succeeding paper examines pricing routines. Both papers describe extensive (though preliminary) computational experience, and can point to some quite promising results.  相似文献
