This Letter is concerned with the theoretical investigation of the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the axis of twist in an infinite sample of cholesteric liquid crystal. We use the continuum theory for cholesterics to determine the forms that the sample may take and distinguish between these by use of energy comparisons. A rigorous mathematical justification of the result by de Gennes is then presented. 相似文献

Summary The existence of the parity-breaking phase transition between untwisted and twisted bipolar structures of the tangentially
anchored spherical nematic drops has been shown experimentally. Twisted structures behave like the optically active objects
in spite of the nonactivity of nematic and isotropic matrix themselves. Temperature dependences of the order parameter (twist
angle) have been determined for the drops of 8 CB and 8 OCB. It has been shown that these dependences are very similar to
that observed in usual second-order phase transition.

This study investigates the beam profile and the liquid crystal (LC) arrangement affected by an optical field on LC thin films at a temperature close to nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature (TNI). A combined microscopic and conoscopic technique was used in experiments as a convenient way to analyze the optical nonlinearity that is associated with the molecular configuration of nematic liquid crystal (NLC). An optical field combined with thermal enhancement enhances molecular reorientation and causes additional molecular excitation along the axis of propagation of the beam. The reorientational nonlinearity yields an undulating structure with multi-foci; the length between each pair of foci increases with time, as described. 相似文献

Measurements of the quadrupolar splitting of the central N14 are reported for the liquid crystal NBOA. The splitting is a measure of the orientational order parameter. At the nematic to smectic-A transition, the orientational order parameter varies continuously as a function of temperature, but with a discontinuous slope, as expected of a second order phase transition. The results are interpreted in terms of the Kobayashi-McMillan theory. 相似文献

We report that the properties of the isotropic to nematic liquid crystalline phase transition of F-actin depend critically on the average filament length. For average filament lengths longer than 2 microm, we confirm previous findings that the phase transition is continuous in both alignment and concentration. For average filament lengths shorter than 2 microm, we show for the first time a first order transition with a clear discontinuity in both alignment and concentration. Tactoidal droplets of coexisting isotropic and nematic phases, differing in concentration by approximately 30%, form over the course of hours and appear to settle into near equilibrium metastable states. 相似文献

High resolution neutron quasielastic scattering has been applied to a study on the critical dynamics near the smectic-A—nematic phase transition in CBOOA. A line narrowing is observed for a certain value of the momentum transfer. We interpret this narrowing as a critical slowing down of the smectic order parameter fluctuations near the transition temperature TSN. The relaxation times vary between 10-8 and 10-7 sec for a temperature interval of 2 K below TSN. 相似文献

Self-diffusion coefficients of two nematic-liquid crystals, PAA and MBBA, were measured by the spin-echo technique over a temperature-range ≈30°C above the nematic-isotropic transition. For both systems, activation energies derived from such measurements agree fairly well those determined earlier from viscosity data. 相似文献

By means of adiabatic scanning calorimetry, we have studied the effect of the nonmesogenic solutes cyclohexane (CH) and biphenyl (BP) on the nematic-smectic-A phase transition in the liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB). For all concentrations of BP studied, the transition remains second-order. For 8CB+CH, however, crossover from second-order to first-order is observed at a tricritical point of the mole fraction x of CH around 0.0460. The difference between the two systems and the crossover is explained in terms of a mean-field free energy density expression including coupling terms of x with the nematic and smectic-A order parameters. 相似文献

We present a high-resolution study of the isotropic to nematic phase transition of a low birefringence liquid-crystal compound incorporating an aerosil gel. Calorimetry, light scattering, and microscopy data coherently combine to allow for an accurate determination of the temperature dependence of the onset of the nematic state. The nematic order develops on cooling through two distinct processes while the nematic correlation length mildly decreases. We understand the doubling of the phase transition as due to a crossover from a random-dilution regime, where the silica gel couples to the scalar part of the nematic order parameter, to a low-T random-field regime, where the coupling induces distortions in the director field. 相似文献

In this study, the nematic-isotropic phase transition is investigated for a sample in the shape of a slab of thickness d, using nonextensive formalism. The interaction potential is written as the sum of the direct interaction of a given nematic molecule with the substrate and of its incomplete interaction with the other nematic molecules due to the presence of the limiting surface. In this framework, we show the effects of the nonextensivity on the nematic-isotropic transition at the nematic-wall interface. The main result is an estimate of the coupling time of two Glauber dynamics starting from different configurations and coupled via the same updating noise. AsN the system exhibits two dynamical phase transitions: (1) at =1 the coupling time changes from polynomial (>1) to stretched exponential (<1) inN; (2) if <1, then at = the almost coupling time [i.e., the first time that the two dynamics are within distanceo(N)] changes from polynomial (<) to stretched exponential (>) inN. We address the reorientational optical nonlinearity of homogeneously aligned neamtic liquid-crystal (NLC) cells. The propagation of light in NLC cells depend strongly on temperature. At a temperature approaching the clearing point, an undulating beam and multifocal points are observed in the NLC cell by use of a polarizing optical microscope. Using a conoscopic technique, we observed novel consecutive concentric and parabolic patterns projected onto a screen. Optical energy is considered to compete with thermal energy to affect NLC's orientation and to generate singularities in the steady state. A model of the configuration of the liquid crystal's orientation is proposed. 相似文献

In this paper, a study of the electrically driven turbulent-turbulent transition in a homeotropically oriented nematic sample is reported. The transition has the characteristics of a nucleation process, and its threshold has been experimentally determined.
