Counting cusps of subgroups of

Let be a number field with real places and complex places, and let be the ring of integers of . The quotient has cusps, where is the class number of . We show that under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis that if is not or an imaginary quadratic field and if , then has infinitely many maximal subgroups with cusps. A key element in the proof is a connection to Artin's Primitive Root Conjecture.

     

Tauberian type theorem for operators with interpolation spectrum for Hölder classes

We consider an invertible operator on a Banach space whose spectrum is an interpolating set for Hölder classes. We show that if , , with and , then for all , assuming that satisfies suitable regularity conditions. When is a Hilbert space and (i.e. is a contraction), we show that under the same assumptions, is unitary and this is sharp.

     

Enriched Reedy categories

We define the notion of an enriched Reedy category and show that if is a -Reedy category for some symmetric monoidal model category and is a -model category, the category of -functors and -natural transformations from to is again a model category.

     

Uniqueness of structures for connective covers

We refine our earlier work on the existence and uniqueness of structures on -theoretic spectra to show that the connective versions of real and complex -theory as well as the connective Adams summand at each prime have unique structures as commutative -algebras. For the -completion we show that the McClure-Staffeldt model for is equivalent as an ring spectrum to the connective cover of the periodic Adams summand . We establish a Bousfield equivalence between the connective cover of the Lubin-Tate spectrum and .

     

Detecting completeness from Ext-vanishing

Motivated by work of C. U. Jensen, R.-O. Buchweitz, and H. Flenner, we prove the following result. Let be a commutative noetherian ring and an ideal in the Jacobson radical of . Let be the -adic completion of . If is a finitely generated -module such that for all , then is -adically complete.

     

Free resolutions of parameter ideals for some rings with finite local cohomology

Let be a -dimensional local ring, with maximal ideal , containing a field and let be a system of parameters for . If and the local cohomology module is finitely generated, then there exists an integer such that the modules have the same Betti numbers, for all .

     

A remark on irregularity of the -Neumann problem on non-smooth domains

It is an observation due to J. J. Kohn that for a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in there exists such that the -Neumann operator on maps (the space of -forms with coefficient functions in -Sobolev space of order ) into itself continuously. We show that this conclusion does not hold without the smoothness assumption by constructing a bounded pseudoconvex domain in , smooth except at one point, whose -Neumann operator is not bounded on for any .

     

Extreme points, exposed points, differentiability points in CL-spaces

This paper presents a property of geometric and topological nature of Gateaux differentiability points and Fréchet differentiability points of almost CL-spaces. More precisely, if we denote by a maximal convex set of the unit sphere of a CL-space , and by the cone generated by , then all Gateaux differentiability points of are just n-s, and all Fréchet differentiability points of are (where n-s denotes the non-support points set of ).

     

Lipscomb's space

It is known that Lipscomb's space can be imbedded in Hilbert's space . Let be the imbedded version of endowed with the -induced topology. We show how to construct as the attractor of an iterated function system containing an infinite number of affine transformations of . In this way we answer an open question of J.C. Perry.

     

A lower bound for the equilateral number of normed spaces

We show that if the Banach-Mazur distance between an -dimensional normed space and is at most , then there exist equidistant points in . By a well-known result of Alon and Milman, this implies that an arbitrary -dimensional normed space admits at least equidistant points, where is an absolute constant. We also show that there exist equidistant points in spaces sufficiently close to , .

     

On Generic differential -extensions

Let be an algebraically closed field with trivial derivation and let denote the differential rational field , with , , , , differentially independent indeterminates over . We show that there is a Picard-Vessiot extension for a matrix equation , with differential Galois group , with the property that if is any differential field with field of constants , then there is a Picard-Vessiot extension with differential Galois group if and only if there are with well defined and the equation giving rise to the extension .

     

On the distribution of Kloosterman sums

For a prime , we consider Kloosterman sums

over a finite field of elements. It is well known that due to results of Deligne, Katz and Sarnak, the distribution of the sums when runs through is in accordance with the Sato-Tate conjecture. Here we show that the same holds where runs through the sums for , for any two sufficiently large sets .

We also improve a recent bound on the nonlinearity of a Boolean function associated with the sequence of signs of Kloosterman sums.

     

Hierarchical structure of the family of curves with maximal genus verifying flag conditions

Fix integers such that and , and let be the set of all integral, projective and nondegenerate curves of degree in the projective space , such that, for all , does not lie on any integral, projective and nondegenerate variety of dimension and degree . We say that a curve satisfies the flag condition if belongs to . Define where denotes the arithmetic genus of . In the present paper, under the hypothesis , we prove that a curve satisfying the flag condition and of maximal arithmetic genus must lie on a unique flag such as , where, for any , denotes an integral projective subvariety of of degree and dimension , such that its general linear curve section satisfies the flag condition and has maximal arithmetic genus . This proves the existence of a sort of a hierarchical structure of the family of curves with maximal genus verifying flag conditions.

     

On diophantine approximation along algebraic curves

Let be a quadratic form such that the associated algebraic curve contains a rational point. Here we show that there exists a domain such that for almost all , there exists an infinite sequence of nonzero integer triples satisfying the following two properties: (i) For each , is an excellent rational approximation to , in the sense that

and (ii) is a rational point on the curve . In addition, we give explicit values of for which both (i) and (ii) hold, and produce a similar result for a certain class of cubic curves.

     

On the triple jump of the set of atoms of a Boolean algebra

We prove the following result concerning the degree spectrum of the atom relation on a computable Boolean algebra. Let be a computable Boolean algebra with infinitely many atoms and be the Turing degree of the atom relation of . If is a c.e. degree such that , then there is a computable copy of where the atom relation has degree . In particular, for every c.e. degree , any computable Boolean algebra with infinitely many atoms has a computable copy where the atom relation has degree .

     

Sharp estimates for the identity minus Hardy operator on the cone of decreasing functions

It is shown that if we restrict the identity minus Hardy operator on the cone of nonnegative decreasing functions in , then we have the sharp estimate
