Models of the coupling of electromagnetic and gravitational fields have been studied extensively for many years. In this paper,we consider the coupling between the Maxwell field and the Weyl tensor of the gravitational field to study how the wavevector of the electromagnetic wave is affected by a plane gravitational wave. We find that the wavevector depends upon the frequency and direction of polarization of the electromagnetic waves, the parameter that couples the Maxwell field and the Weyl tensor, and the angle between the direction of propagation of the electromagnetic wave and the coordinate axis. The results show that this coupling model can be tested by the detection of high-frequency gravitational waves. 相似文献

Contrary to the superposition principle, it is well known that photorefraction exists in the vacuum with the presence of a strong static field, a laser field, or a rotational magnetic field. Different from the classical optical crystals, the refractive index also depends on the phase of the strong electromagnetic field. We obtain the phase and direction dependence of the refractive index of a probe wave incident in the strong field of a circular-polarized plane wave by solving the Maxwell equations corrected by the effective Lagrangian. It may provide a valuable theoretical basis to calculate the polarization evolution of waves in the strong electromagnetic circumstances of pulsar or neutron stars. 相似文献

Linearized motion equations for electromagnetic wave field in the external magnetic field have been solved for the PVLAS experiment configuration within the low-energy approximation of quantum electrodynamics. It has been shown that the wave propagation velocity depends on the initial direction of the plane of wave polarization. Dispersion laws corresponding to the waves with mutually perpendicular directions of polarization have been established. The dependence of ellipticity of laser radiation field on initial polarization and the value of the external magnetic field has been obtained. The ellipticity parameter for the configuration of the system used in the PVLAS experiment has been found. 相似文献

By means of an approximate method formerly published by this author, diffraction by an aperture in a screen, which is not plane, is discussed. We analyze the polarization changes introduced by a rotated Dove prism on the linearly polarized light, using the Jones calculus and the exact ray trace analysis. The state of polarization changes from the linear to a mildly elliptical one when a plane wave front passes through a rotated Dove prism: its semi-major axis is nearly parallel to the input plane of polarization, for any angle of prism rotation. The interferogram contrast remains high for all shearing angles in spite of polarization changes when the Dove prism is incorporated into a rotational shearing interferometer. The integrability conditions of the electromagnetic field equations in a continuum with defects and their wave solutions are found. The following dislocation effects on the electromagnetic wave propagation in a continuous medium are investigated: the change in the direction of the electromagnetic wave propagation in a continuous medium; the rotation of the polarization plane of electromagnetic field wave in a continuous medium; the excitation of longitudinal components of the electromagnetic wave in a continuous medium and the change in the electromagnetic wave intensity related to this phenomenon. The energy balance equation for the electromagnetic field in a continuum with a stationary distribution of dislocation is found and it is shown that an electromagnetic wave excites exciton modes localized at dislocations in the solid. 相似文献

The results of experiments on observation of rotation of the plane of polarization of coherent laser radiation with wavelength λ = 0.632991 μm after propagation through a rotating optical disk made of TF3 glass with refractive index n = 1.71250 are analyzed. The experiments were conducted at angle of ray incidence on the flat disk surface ?0 = 60°, and the rotational speed of the disk was varied from 0 to 200 Hz in both directions. The results indicate that rotation of optically transparent, homogeneous, and isotropic dielectric causes rotation of linear polarization of the monochromatic electromagnetic plane wave by several tens of degrees. At a rotational speed of 3 Hz, the rotation of polarization reached Δφ = 70° for the vertical component of laser output polarization. The dependences of the angle of rotation of polarization and the degree of polarization of the rays on rotational speed are nonlinear and are attributed to the appearance of substantial anisotropic properties in a rotating dielectric. 相似文献

We study the rotation of the polarization plane of an electromagnetic wave due to a gravitational field. An evolution law for the polarization plane is derived in the geometric optics approximation. For the particular case of a Kerr space-time, we obtain the polarization plane rotation for an incident light ray parallel to the Z axis at z = - and for a radially outgoing one. For graphene placed in a dc magnetic field and exposed to two electromagnetic waves of the same polarization but different frequencies, an expression for the direct current density in a direction perpendicular to the polarization plane of the waves is derived. The direct current component is nonzero for the wave frequency ratio equal to two; it is proportional to the magnetic field strength, the electric field strength of the higher-frequency wave, and the squared electric field strength of the lower-frequency wave. The propagation of electromagnetic waves in an unmagnetized weakly inhomogeneous cold plasma is examined. We show that the inhomogeneity induces a gauge connection term in wave equation, which gives rise to Berry effects in the dynamics of polarized rays in the post geometric optics approximation. The polarization plane of a plane polarized ray rotates as a result of the geometric Berry phase, which is the Rytov rotation. Also, the Berry curvature causes the optical Hall effect, according to which, rays of left/right circular polarization deflect oppositely to produce a spin current directed across the direction of propagation. 相似文献

Based on the reported physical parameters for hexagonal system solids,we have calculated the effects of anisotropy on polarization of plane P-wave propagation.Herein we report the results of calculations and the newly observed physical phenomena.It is found that,for a given propagation,if the polarization is parallel to the wave vector,so also to the Poynting vector.In such a case,the phase velocity is identical to the energy velocity;the quasi P-wave degenerates to a pure P-wave along the propagation.It is also noted that if the polarization is parallel to the Poynting vector but not to the wave vector,the propagating wave cannot be a pure P-wave.Furthermore,the polarization in a quasi P-wave may deviate from the wave vector for more than 45°,but the deviation from the Poynting vector is always less than 45°.The energy velocity of a quasi SV-wave can be larger than that of the quasi P-wave in some propagation directions,even though the phase velocity of a quasi SV-wave may never be larger than either the phase velocity or energy velocity of the quasi P-wave.Finally,in case of parameters ε=0 and δ*≠0,the polarization of a quasi P-wave has an observed symmetry at a 45°phase angle.The anisotropy of a hexagonal system solid determines if a pure P-wave can be created and what the propagation direction is for a plane wave propagating inside such a hexagonal system solid. 相似文献

Jones calculus is used to analyze the effect of the polarization characteristics of the output mirror coating of a V-shaped Nd:YVO4/KTP laser on the second harmonic generation. The reflection-induced phase retardance (RIPR) of the coating can quench the second harmonic generation. When the optical axis of Nd:YVO4 makes a π/4 angle with the incident plane of the output mirror and the fast axis of KTP in the incident plane, the RIPR induced reduction of coupling factor of the second harmonic generation is less than 1% if the phase retardance is smaller than 25°. If the polarization direction of the fundamental wave coincides with the eigen-polarization directions of the incident plane, the effect of the reflection-induced phase retardance on the conversing efficiency can be avoided. 相似文献

Diffraction of uniformly polarized laser beams with vortex phase singularity is theoretically analyzed using the plane wave expansion. It is shown that for a high numerical aperture, an intense longitudinal electric field component is formed on the optical axis in this case. It is numerically demonstrated that an analogous effect is ensured for diffraction of a conventional Gaussian beam from asymmetric binary axicons. The field intensity on the optical axis can be varied either by rotating the optical element or by changing the direction of polarization of radiation. 相似文献
