In this paper we relax the assumptions of a well known algorithm for continuous global optimization, Multilevel Single Linkage (MLSL). It is shown that the good theoretical properties of MLSL are shared by a slightly different algorithm, Non-monotonic MLSL (NM MLSL), but under weaker assumptions. The main difference with MLSL is the fact that in NM MLSL some non-monotonic sequences of sampled points are also considered in order to decide whether to start or not a local search, while MLSL only considers monotonic decreasing sequences. The modification is inspired by non-monotonic methods for local searches. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this paper a new graph partitioning problem is introduced, the relaxed k-way graph partitioning problem. It is close to the k-way, also called multi-way, graph partitioning problem, but with relaxed imbalance constraints. This problem arises in the air traffic control area. A new graph partitioning method is presented, the Fusion Fission, which can be used to resolve the relaxed k-way graph partitioning problem. The Fusion Fission method is compared to classical Multilevel packages and with a Simulated Annealing algorithm. The Fusion Fission algorithm and the Simulated Annealing algorithm, both require a longer computation time than the Multilevel algorithms, but they also find better partitions. However, the Fusion Fission algorithm partitions the graph with a smaller imbalance and a smaller cut than Simulated Annealing does.  相似文献

Determining the maximum number of D-dimensional spheres of radius r that can be adjacent to a central sphere of radius r is known as the Kissing Number Problem (KNP). The problem has been solved for two, three and very recently for four dimensions. We present two nonlinear (nonconvex) mathematical programming models for the solution of the KNP. We solve the problem by using two stochastic global optimization methods: a Multi Level Single Linkage algorithm and a Variable Neighbourhood Search. We obtain numerical results for two, three and four dimensions.  相似文献

This paper describes an optimization algorithm which uses up torth-order derivatives to find the optimum of anr-times continuously differentiable function of many variables. The algorithm, developed by Kalaba and Tishler (Ref. 1), obtains the exact values of the derivatives required for the optimization from the table algorithm presented in Kalabaet al. (Ref. 2) and Kalaba and Tishler (Ref. 3). We introduce a new class of set covering heuristics, based on clustering techniques. In its simplest form, a heuristic in this class may be described as follows: firstly, partition the column set into clusters formed by columns that are close to each other (e.g. in the Hamming distance sense). Then select a best (e.g. a cheapest) column in each cluster; if the selected columns form a coverC, then extract fromC a prime cover and stop; else, modify the partition (e.g. by increasing the number of clusters) and repeat. We describe two implementations of this general algorithmic strategy, relying on the Single Linkage and the Leader clustering algorithm, respectively. Numerical experiments performed on 72 randomly generated test problems with 200 or 400 rows and 1000 columns indicate that the above two heuristics often yield cheaper covers than other well-known (greedy-type) heuristics when the cost-range is not too narrow.The present work is based on R.K. In biochemically reactive systems with small copy numbers of one or more reactant molecules, the dynamics is dominated by stochastic effects. To approximate those systems, discrete state-space and stochastic simulation approaches have been shown to be more relevant than continuous state-space and deterministic ones. In systems characterized by having simultaneously fast and slow timescales, existing discrete space-state stochastic path simulation methods, such as the stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA) and the explicit tau-leap (explicit-TL) method, can be very slow. Implicit approximations have been developed to improve numerical stability and provide efficient simulation algorithms for those systems. Here, we propose an efficient Multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) method in the spirit of the work by Anderson and Higham (SIAM Multiscal Model. Simul. 10(1), 2012). This method uses split-step implicit tau-leap (SSI-TL) at levels where the explicit-TL method is not applicable due to numerical stability issues. We present numerical examples that illustrate the performance of the proposed method.  相似文献

Primal-dual pairs of semidefinite programs provide a general framework for the theory and algorithms for the trust region subproblem (TRS). This latter problem consists in minimizing a general quadratic function subject to a convex quadratic constraint and, therefore, it is a generalization of the minimum eigenvalue problem. The importance of (TRS) is due to the fact that it provides the step in trust region minimization algorithms. The semidefinite framework is studied as an interesting instance of semidefinite programming as well as a tool for viewing known algorithms and deriving new algorithms for (TRS). In particular, a dual simplex type method is studied that solves (TRS) as a parametric eigenvalue problem. This method uses the Lanczos algorithm for the smallest eigenvalue as a black box. Therefore, the essential cost of the algorithm is the matrix-vector multiplication and, thus, sparsity can be exploited. A primal simplex type method provides steps for the so-called hard case. Extensive numerical tests for large sparse problems are discussed. These tests show that the cost of the algorithm is 1 +α(n) times the cost of finding a minimum eigenvalue using the Lanczos algorithm, where 0<α(n)<1 is a fraction which decreases as the dimension increases. The Barzilai and Borwein (BB) gradient method does not guarantee a descent in the objective function at each iteration, but performs better than the classical steepest descent (SD) method in practice. So far, the BB method has found many successful applications and generalizations in linear systems, unconstrained optimization, convex-constrained optimization, stochastic optimization, etc. In this article, we propose a new gradient method that uses the SD and the BB steps alternately. Hence the name “alternate step (AS) gradient method.” Our theoretical and numerical analyses show that the AS method is a promising alternative to the BB method for linear systems. Unconstrained optimization algorithms related to the AS method are also discussed. Particularly, a more efficient gradient algorithm is provided by exploring the idea of the AS method in the GBB algorithm by Raydan (1997).

To establish a general R-linear convergence result for gradient methods, an important property of the stepsize is drawn in this article. Consequently, R-linear convergence result is established for a large collection of gradient methods, including the AS method. Some interesting insights into gradient methods and discussion about monotonicity and nonmonotonicity are also given.  相似文献

In this paper we give a variant of the Topkis—Veinott method for solving inequality constrained optimization problems. This method uses a linearly constrained positive semidefinite quadratic problem to generate a feasible descent direction at each iteration. Under mild assumptions, the algorithm is shown to be globally convergent in the sense that every accumulation point of the sequence generated by the algorithm is a Fritz—John point of the problem. We introduce a Fritz—John (FJ) function, an FJ1 strong second-order sufficiency condition (FJ1-SSOSC), and an FJ2 strong second-order sufficiency condition (FJ2-SSOSC), and then show, without any constraint qualification (CQ), that (i) if an FJ point z satisfies the FJ1-SSOSC, then there exists a neighborhood N(z) of z such that, for any FJ point y ∈ N(z) \ {z } , f 0 (y) ≠ f 0 (z) , where f 0 is the objective function of the problem; (ii) if an FJ point z satisfies the FJ2-SSOSC, then z is a strict local minimum of the problem. The result (i) implies that the entire iteration point sequence generated by the method converges to an FJ point. We also show that if the parameters are chosen large enough, a unit step length can be accepted by the proposed algorithm. Accepted 21 September 1998  相似文献

Global and local convergence properties of a primal-dual interior-point pure potential-reduction algorithm for linear programming problems is analyzed. This algorithm is a primal-dual variant of the Iri-Imai method and uses modified Newton search directions to minimize the Tanabe-Todd-Ye (TTY) potential function. A polynomial time complexity for the method is demonstrated. Furthermore, this method is shown to have a unique accumulation point even for degenerate problems and to have Q-quadratic convergence to this point by an appropriate choice of the step-sizes. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first superlinear convergence result on degenerate linear programs for primal-dual interior-point algorithms that do not follow the central path. A reformulation of the nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) as an unconstrained minimization problem is considered. It is shown that any stationary point of the unconstrained objective function is a solution of NCP if the mapping F involved in NCP is continuously differentiable and monotone, and that the level sets are bounded if F is continuous and strongly monotone. A descent algorithm is described which uses only function values of F. Some numerical results are given.  相似文献

In this paper, a heuristic algorithm for nonlinear programming is presented. The algorithm uses two search directions, and the Hessian of the Lagrangian function is approximated with the BFGS secant update. We show that the sequence of iterates convergeq-superlinearly if the sequence of approximating matrices satisfies a particular condition. Numerical results are presented.  相似文献

We describe an automatic cubature algorithm for functions that have a singularity on the surface of the integration region. The algorithm combines an adaptive subdivision strategy with extrapolation. The extrapolation uses a non-uniform subdivision that can be directly incorporated into the subdivision strategy used for the adaptive algorithm. The algorithm is designed to integrate a vector function over ann-dimensional rectangular region and a FORTRAN implementation is included.Supported by the Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities.  相似文献

Consider the problem of minimizing a convex essentially smooth function over a polyhedral set. For the special case where the cost function is strictly convex, we propose a feasible descent method for this problem that chooses the descent directions from a finite set of vectors. When the polyhedral set is the nonnegative orthant or the entire space, this method reduces to a coordinate descent method which, when applied to certain dual of linearly constrained convex programs with strictly convex essentially smooth costs, contains as special cases a number of well-known dual methods for quadratic and entropy (either –logx orx logx) optimization. Moreover, convergence of these dual methods can be inferred from a general convergence result for the feasible descent method. When the cost function is not strictly convex, we propose an extension of the feasible descent method which makes descent along the elementary vectors of a certain subspace associated with the polyhedral set. The elementary vectors are not stored, but generated using the dual rectification algorithm of Rockafellar. By introducing an -complementary slackness mechanism, we show that this extended method terminates finitely with a solution whose cost is within an order of of the optimal cost. Because it uses the dual rectification algorithm, this method can exploit the combinatorial structure of the polyhedral set and is well suited for problems with a special (e.g., network) structure.This work was partially supported by the US Army Research Office Contract No. DAAL03-86-K-0171 and by the National Science Foundation Grant No. ECS-85-19058.  相似文献

The gradient path of a real valued differentiable function is given by the solution of a system of differential equations. For a quadratic function the above equations are linear, resulting in a closed form solution. A quasi-Newton type algorithm for minimizing ann-dimensional differentiable function is presented. Each stage of the algorithm consists of a search along an arc corresponding to some local quadratic approximation of the function being minimized. The algorithm uses a matrix approximating the Hessian in order to represent the arc. This matrix is updated each stage and is stored in its Cholesky product form. This simplifies the representation of the arc and the updating process. Quadratic termination properties of the algorithm are discussed as well as its global convergence for a general continuously differentiable function. Numerical experiments indicating the efficiency of the algorithm are presented.  相似文献

The conceptual design of aircraft often entails a large number of nonlinear constraints that result in a nonconvex feasible design space and multiple local optima. The design of the high-speed civil transport (HSCT) is used as an example of a highly complex conceptual design with 26 design variables and 68 constraints. This paper compares three global optimization techniques on the HSCT problem and two test problems containing thousands of local optima and noise: multistart local optimizations using either sequential quadratic programming (SQP) as implemented in the design optimization tools (DOT) program or Snyman's dynamic search method, and a modified form of Jones' DIRECT global optimization algorithm. SQP is a local optimizer, while Snyman's algorithm is capable of moving through shallow local minima. The modified DIRECT algorithm is a global search method based on Lipschitzian optimization that locates small promising regions of design space and then uses a local optimizer to converge to the optimum. DOT and the dynamic search algorithms proved to be superior for finding a single optimum masked by noise of trigonometric form. The modified DIRECT algorithm was found to be better for locating the global optimum of functions with many widely separated true local optima.  相似文献

Following the Perron theorem, the spectral radius of a primitive matrix is a simple eigenvalue. It is shown that for a primitive matrix A, there is a positive rank one matrix X such that B = A ° X , where ° denotes the Hadamard product of matrices, and such that the row (column) sums of matrix B are the same and equal to the Perron root. An iterative algorithm is presented to obtain matrix B without an explicit knowledge of X. The convergence rate of this algorithm is similar to that of the power method but it uses less computational load. A byproduct of the proposed algorithm is a new method for calculating the first eigenvector.  相似文献

The simplicial homology global optimisation (SHGO) algorithm is a general purpose global optimisation algorithm based on applications of simplicial integral homology and combinatorial topology. SHGO approximates the homology groups of a complex built on a hypersurface homeomorphic to a complex on the objective function. This provides both approximations of locally convex subdomains in the search space through Sperner’s lemma and a useful visual tool for characterising and efficiently solving higher dimensional black and grey box optimisation problems. This complex is built up using sampling points within the feasible search space as vertices. The algorithm is specialised in finding all the local minima of an objective function with expensive function evaluations efficiently which is especially suitable to applications such as energy landscape exploration. SHGO was initially developed as an improvement on the topographical global optimisation (TGO) method. It is proven that the SHGO algorithm will always outperform TGO on function evaluations if the objective function is Lipschitz smooth. In this paper SHGO is applied to non-convex problems with linear and box constraints with bounds placed on the variables. Numerical experiments on linearly constrained test problems show that SHGO gives competitive results compared to TGO and the recently developed Lc-DISIMPL algorithm as well as the PSwarm, LGO and DIRECT-L1 algorithms. Furthermore SHGO is compared with the TGO, basinhopping (BH) and differential evolution (DE) global optimisation algorithms over a large selection of black-box problems with bounds placed on the variables from the SciPy benchmarking test suite.
