AFM imaging of the adsorption of self-assembled octadecylsiloxane (ODS) monolayers has been utilized for probing surface properties of silicon wafers. It has been found that both growth rate of the organic films and island size of sub-monolayer films are influenced by the doping level of the wafers as well as by the surface finishing step during wafer production. Generally, higher doping levels led to lower adsorption rates and smaller islands. Variation of the sample pretreatment used for surface finishing of similarly doped wafers led only to significant changes of the island size, but not of the surface coverage. The results presented open up a valuable perspective for characterizing the surface homogeneity of silicon wafers which is an important parameter for monitoring-wafers in semiconductor industry. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and mercapto ethanol were used to modify the surface functionality of platinum/titanium or platinum/tantalum bilayer patterns on thermally oxidized silicon wafers. The attachment of OTS to the exposed oxide region made it hydrophobic, while the anchoring of mercapto ethanol to the bilayer pattern turned it hydrophilic. This patterned hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity was exploited to preferentially deposit barium strontium titanate (BST) thin films on the patterned bilayers from an aqueous sol-gel solution. The combination of the SAMs and the sol-gel film formation method allowed direct patterned deposition of BST thin films, which could be useful for on-chip electronic applications. Wet oxygen annealing at 50 °C was sufficient to stabilize the deposited sol-gel coating without adversely affecting the functionality of the OTS, thus permitting multiple dip-coatings to obtain patterned films of a desired thickness. Heat treatment at 750 °C allowed densification and conversion of the sol-gel coatings to perovskite BST films.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to characterize self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octanethiol on Au(111), created using vapor deposition at elevated temperatures and ambient pressure. Monolayers contained large, close-packed ( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees domains with sizes considerably larger than those typically formed from conventional solution-phase preparation and with crystallographically straight domain boundaries. New striped surface phases were also observed, including a 13 x radical3 phase with a density that was 69% of the close-packed density; these striped phases appeared topographically higher in STM images than close-packed monolayers.  相似文献

Engineering silicon oxide surfaces using self-assembled monolayers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Although a molecular monolayer is only a few nanometers thick it can completely change the properties of a surface. Molecular monolayers can be readily prepared using the Langmuir-Blodgett methodology or by chemisorption on metal and oxide surfaces. This Review focuses on the use of chemisorbed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as a platform for the functionalization of silicon oxide surfaces. The controlled organization of molecules and molecular assemblies on silicon oxide will have a prominent place in "bottom-up" nanofabrication, which could revolutionize fields such as nanoelectronics and biotechnology in the near future. In recent years, self-assembled monolayers on silicon oxide have reached a high level of sophistication and have been combined with various lithographic patterning methods to develop new nanofabrication protocols and biological arrays. Nanoscale control over surface properties is of paramount importance to advance from 2D patterning to 3D fabrication.  相似文献

We report on the fabrication of high-quality opaline photonic crystals from large silica spheres (diameter of 890 nm), self-assembled in hydrophilic trenches of silicon wafers by using a novel technique coined a combination of "lifting and stirring". The achievements reported here comprise a spatial selectivity of opal crystallization without special treatment of the wafer surface, a filling of the trenches up to the top, leading to a spatially uniform film thickness, particularly an absence of cracks within the size of the trenches, and finally a good 3D order of the opal lattice even in trenches with a complex confined geometry, verified using optical measurements. The opal lattice was found to match the pattern precisely in width as well as depth, providing an important step toward applications of opals in integrated optics.  相似文献

Aminosilane self-assembled monolayers on silicon substrates have been prepared via a gas-phase procedure based on the consecutive reactions of the aminosilane precursor and water vapor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurements have been used to characterize the aminosilane layers. For comparison, substrates modified with aminosilane through a liquid-phase procedure have been prepared and characterized by means of the same techniques. The vapor-based procedure was found to yield more uniform layers characterized by fewer and smaller aggregates as compared with liquid-treated substrates. Grazing angles reflection Fourier transform infrared measurements were carried out on the vapor-treated substrates before and after water exposure to investigate the hydrolysis of the alkoxy groups and further reaction to form siloxane bonds. The surface density of amino groups, as estimated through a colorimetric method, is very similar for vapor- and liquid-treated substrates, suggesting a similar reactivity and accessibility of the functional groups on the surface.  相似文献

We report the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) onto gold substrates by exposure to lithium dialkyldithiocarbamate salts [(Li+(R2DTC-), where R = n-propyl, n-butyl, n-octyl, n-decyl, n-dodecyl, or n-octadecyl] in ethanol or methylene chloride. The crystallinity and composition of the monolayers were assessed by polarized modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), wettability was characterized by contact angles of water and hexadecane, thickness was measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry, and barrier properties determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. While the shorter R2DTC-s formed monolayers with liquid-like packing, monolayers prepared from the longest R2DTC- (where R = n-octadecyl) exhibit similar thickness, crystallinity, wettability, and capacitance as monolayers prepared from n-octadecanethiol. The hydrocarbon chains within the monolayers prepared from (C18)2DTC- are less canted on average than those prepared from n-octadecanethiol. Nonetheless, the (C18)2DTC- SAM exhibits an order of magnitude lower resistance against the penetration of redox probes, which is attributed to a higher density of pinhole defect sites.  相似文献

Alkylsiloxane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are used in the semiconductor industry and, more recently, as proxies for organics adsorbed on airborne mineral dust and on buildings and construction materials. A number of methods have been used for removing the SAM from the substrate after reaction or use, particularly plasmas or piranha (H2SO4/H2O2) solution. However, when the substrates are reused to make new SAMs, the impact of the cleaning methods on the chemistry of subsequently formed SAMs on the surface is not known. Here we report atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared studies of changes in a silicon substrate upon repetitive deposition and removal of SAMs by these two methods. It is shown that a thicker layer of silicon oxide is formed, and the surface becomes irregular and roughened, particularly after the piranha treatment. This layer of silica impacts the structure of the SAMs attached to it and can serve as a reservoir for trace gases that adsorb on it, potentially contributing to the subsequent reactions of the SAM. The implications for the use of such surfaces as a proxy for reactions of organics on airborne dust particles and on structures in the boundary layer are discussed.  相似文献

Electrical tunnel junctions consisting of alkanethiol molecules self-assembled on Au-coated Si substrates and contacted with Au-coated atomic force microscopy tips were characterized under varying junction loads in a conducting-probe atomic force microscopy configuration. Junction load was cycled in the fashion of a standard nanoindentation experiment; however, junction conductance rather than probe depth was measured directly. The junction conductance data have been analyzed with typical contact mechanics (Derjaguin-Müller-Toporov) and tunneling equations to extract the monolayer modulus (approximately 50 GPa), the contact transmission (approximately 2 x 10(-6)), contact area, and probe depth as a function of load. The monolayers are shown to undergo significant plastic deformation under compression, yielding indentations approximately 7 Angstroms deep for maximum junction loads of approximately 50 nN. Comparison of mechanical properties for different chain lengths was also performed. The film modulus decreased with the number of carbons in the molecular chain for shorter-chain films. This trend abruptly reversed once 12 carbons were present along the backbone.  相似文献

The effect of molecular chirality on electron transmission is explored by photoelectrochemistry. Thiol-terminated chiral scaffold molecules containing a porphyrin chromophore were self-assembled on gold surfaces to form a monolayer. Incorporation of the SAM-coated gold into an electrochemical cell and illumination with visible light generated a cathodic photocurrent. When using circularly polarized light, the photocurrent displayed an asymmetry (different magnitude of photocurrent for right versus left polarization) that changed with the molecular chirality (left- or right-handedness of the scaffold). A symmetry constraint on the electronic coupling between the porphyrin and the organic scaffold is proposed as a possible mechanism for the photocurrent asymmetry.  相似文献

The growth of self-assembled monolayers from octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on modified silicon surfaces has been investigated. The influence of different immersion times in a deactivation reagent on the growth mechanism and the ordering of the films has been studied. Characterization of the films and the submonolayer coverage has been performed with tapping mode atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and infrared spectroscopy. We found that a deactivation of active sites led to a higher mobility of adsorbed molecules on the surface resulting in circular islands of highly ordered alkylsiloxane. However, upon prolonged immersion in OTS these ordered islands did not continue to grow and full monolayer coverage could not be obtained. Instead, an exchange reaction with the deactivation reagent leading to a disordered film between the ordered islands was observed. This was confirmed by external reflection infrared spectroscopy.  相似文献

The electronic properties of various transparent conducting oxide (TCO) surfaces are probed electrochemically via self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). A novel graftable probe molecule having a tethered trichlorosilyl group and a redox-active ferrocenyl functionality (Fc(CH2) 4SiCl3) is synthesized for this purpose. This molecule can be self-assembled via covalent bonds to form monolayers on various TCO surfaces. On as-received ITO, saturation coverage of 6.6 x 10(-10) mol/cm2 by a close-packed monolayer and an electron-transfer rate of 6.65 s(-1) is achieved after 9 h of chemisorption, as determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and synchrotron X-ray reflectivity. With this molecular probe, it is found that O2 plasma-treated ITO has a significantly greater electroactive coverage of 7.9 x 10 (-10) mol/cm2 than as-received ITO. CV studies of this redox SAM on five different TCO surfaces reveal that MOCVD-derived CdO exhibits the greatest electroactive coverage (8.1 x 10(-10) mol/cm2) and MOCVD-derived ZITO (ZnIn2.0Sn1.5O) exhibits the highest electron transfer rate (7.12 s(-1)).  相似文献

Novel octasubstituted phthalocyanine derivatives XYSiPc(OR)8 (X=alkyl, Y=alkoxy, R=alkane or alkene) were synthesized by reaction of alkoxy-substituted diiminoisoindolines with XSiCl3 followed by quenching with an alcohol YOH. Three synthetic routes for adding anchoring groups to the phthalocyanines were explored: variation of the axial groups X and Y, or incorporation of vinyl groups around the periphery of the phthalocyanine ring. The latter approach yielded silicon and copper phthalocyanines with eight terminal vinyl groups, which reacted cleanly with thioacetic acid/AIBN to give products with eight protected terminal thiols.  相似文献

We have investigated the seedless electroless deposition (ELD) of Ni on functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) using scanning electron and optical microscopies, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. For all SAMs studied, the Ni deposition rate is dependent on the bath pH, deposition temperature, and complexing agent. In contrast to the physical vapor deposition of Ni on SAMs, electrolessly deposited Ni does not penetrate through the SAM. This behavior indicates that ELD is a suitable technique for the deposition of low-to-moderate reactivity on organic thin films. We demonstrate that Ni can be selectively deposited on SAMs using two different methods. First, selectivity can be imparted by the formation of Ni(II)-surface complexes. As a demonstration, we selectively deposited Ni on the -COOH terminated SAM areas of patterned -COOH/-CH(3) or -COOH/-OH terminated SAMs. Here, Ni(2+) ions form Ni(2+)-carboxylate complexes with the -COOH terminal group, which comprise the nucleation sites for subsequent metal deposition. Second, we demonstrate that nickel is selectively deposited on the -CH(3) terminated SAM areas of a patterned -OH/-CH(3) terminated SAM. In this case, the Ni(2+) ion does not specifically interact with the -CH(3) terminal group. Rather, selectivity is imparted by the interaction of the reductant, dimethylamine borane (DMAB), with the -OH and -CH(3) terminal groups.  相似文献

Four approaches have been explored for the preparation of maleimido-functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on silicon. SAMs prepared by self-assembly of maleimido-functionalized alkyltrichlorosilanes (11-maleimido-undecyl-trichlorosilane) on oxide-covered silicon yield higher signals from maleimido functionalities in ATR-IR (attenuated total reflection IR) spectroscopy and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) than the other three methods. The surface composition of maleimido groups was tailored further by the formation of mixed monolayers with nonfunctionalized alkyltrichlorosilanes (decyltrichlorosilane). The order of the alkyl chains within the monolayers only slightly depends on the composition of the mixed monolayers. We utilized the maleimido-terminated SAMs to bind various nucleophilic compounds, alkylamines, alkylthiols, and thiol-tagged DNA oligonucleotides by means of conjugate addition.  相似文献

This paper describes the generation of reversible patterns of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold and silicon oxide surfaces via the formation of reversible covalent bonds. The reactions of (patterned) SAMs of 11-amino-1-undecanethiol (11-AUT) with propanal, pentanal, decanal, or terephthaldialdehyde result in dense imine monolayers. The regeneration of these imine monolayers to the 11-AUT monolayer is obtained by hydrolysis at pH 3. The (patterned) monolayers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle and electrochemical measurements, and atomic force microscopy. Imines can also be formed by microcontact printing of amines on terephthaldialdehyde-terminated substrates. Lucifer Yellow ethylenediamine was employed as a fluorescent amine-containing marker to visualize the reversible covalent patterning on a terephthaldialdehyde-terminated glass surface by confocal microscopy. These experiments demonstrate that with reversible covalent chemistry it is possible to print and erase chemical patterns on surfaces repeatedly.  相似文献

We combine first-principles density-functional theory with matrix Green's function calculations to predict the structures and charge transport characteristics of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of four classes of systems in contact with Au(111) electrodes: conjugated polyene chains (n = 4, 8, 12, 16, and 30) thiolated at one or both ends and saturated alkane chains (n = 4, 8, 12, and 16) thiolated at one or both ends. For the polyene SAMs, we find no decay in the current as a function of chain length and conclude that these 1-3 nm long polyene SAMs act as metallic wires. We also find that the polyene-monothiolate leads to a contact resistance only 2.8 times higher than that for the polyene-dithiolate chains, indicating that the device conductance is dominated by the properties of the molecular connector with less importance in having a second molecule-electrode contact. For the alkane SAMs, we observe the normal exponential decay in the current as a function of the chain length with a decay constant of beta(n) = 0.82 for the alkane-monothiolate and 0.88 for the alkane-dithiolate. We find that the contact resistance for the alkane-monothiolate is 12.5 times higher than that for the alkane-dithiolate chains, reflecting the extra resistance due to the weak contact on the nonthiolated end. These contrasting charge transport characteristics of alkane and polyene SAMs and their contact dependence are explained in terms of the atomic projected density of states.  相似文献

Inorganic anions strongly influence the electron transfer rate from the ascorbate to the ferrocene-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM) composed of 9-mercaptononyl-5'-ferrocenylpentanoate (Fc(CH2)4COO(CH2)9SH, MNFcP). At the 1 M concentration level of the supporting anion (sodium salt electrolyte), a more than 10-fold increase in the electrocatalytic oxidation rate constant of the ascorbate is observed in the following sequence: PF6-, ClO4-, BF4-, NO3-, Cl-, SO4(2-), NH2SO3- (sulfamate), and F-. The sequence corresponds to the direction of increasing hydration energy of the corresponding anion, suggesting that highly hydrated ions promote electrocatalytic electron transfer to the ferrocene-terminated SAMs, while poorly hydrated ions inhibit it. Fourier transform surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (FT-SERS), in combination with cyclic voltammetry, indicates the formation of surface ion pairs between the ferricinium cation (Fc+) and low hydration energy anions, while, on the contrary, no ion pairs were observed in the electrolytes dominated by the high hydration energy anions. Though it is evident that the ion-pairing ability of hydrophobic anions is directly responsible for the electrocatalytic electron transfer inhibition, an estimate of the free, ion-unpaired Fc+ surface concentration shows that it cannot be directly related to the electron transfer rate. This suggests that the principal reason of the anion-induced electron transfer rate modulation might be related to the molecular level changes of the physical and chemical properties as well as the structure of the self-assembled monolayer.  相似文献
