Planar isolated and stable fixed points have index =1

Let be an open subset and be an orientation reversing homeomorphism. We prove that if p∈W is an isolated and stable fixed point of f then the fixed point index of f at p, , is 1. We apply our theorem to the study of the orbital stability of isolated periodic orbits of flows in four-dimensional riemannian manifolds.     

Pointlike sets with respect to R and J

We present an algorithm to compute the pointlike subsets of a finite semigroup with respect to the pseudovariety of all finite R-trivial semigroups. The algorithm is inspired by Henckell’s algorithm for computing the pointlike subsets with respect to the pseudovariety of all finite aperiodic semigroups. We also give an algorithm to compute -pointlike sets, where denotes the pseudovariety of all finite J-trivial semigroups. We finally show that, in contrast with the situation for , the natural adaptation of Henckell’s algorithm to computes pointlike sets, but not all of them.     

Solution to a conjecture by Hofmeier-Wittstock

For a locally compact (non-compact) group , consider as a left module over the algebra , endowed with the first Arens product. We answer in the affirmative a question raised by Hofmeier-Wittstock (Math. Ann. 308 (1) (1997) 141) concerning the automatic boundedness of the corresponding module homomorphisms on . In fact, we prove that an even stronger assertion holds true. Furthermore, we show that the theorem, first obtained by Ghahramani-McClure (Canad. Math. Bull. 35 (2) (1992) 180), on the automatic w∗-continuity of the (bounded) -module homomorphisms on , can be sharpened in a similar fashion. To this end, a general factorization theorem for bounded families in is proved from which we shall derive both results.     

Properties of cyclic subspace regression

Various properties of the regression vector produced by cyclic subspace regression with regard to the meancentered linear regression equation are put forth. In particular, the subspace associated with the creation of is shown to contain a basis that maximizes certain covariances with respect to , the orthogonal projection of onto a specific subspace of the range of X. This basis is constructed. Moreover, this paper shows how the maximum covariance values effect the . Several alternative representations of are also developed. These representations show that is a modified version of the l-factor principal components regression vector , with the modification occurring by a nonorthogonal projection. Additionally, these representations enable prediction properties associated with to be explicitly identified. Finally, methods for choosing factors are spelled out.     

On a relation between certain cohomological invariants

Let G be a group, the supremum of the projective lengths of the injective ZG-modules and the supremum of the injective lengths of the projective ZG-modules. The invariants and were studied in [T.V. Gedrich, K.W. Gruenberg, Complete cohomological functors on groups, Topology Appl. 25 (1987) 203-223] in connection with the existence of complete cohomological functors. If is finite then [T.V. Gedrich, K.W. Gruenberg, Complete cohomological functors on groups, Topology Appl. 25 (1987) 203-223] and , where is the generalized cohomological dimension of G [B.M. Ikenaga, Homological dimension and Farrell cohomology, J. Algebra 87 (1984) 422-457]. Note that if G is of finite virtual cohomological dimension. It has been conjectured in [O. Talelli, On groups of type Φ, Arch. Math. 89 (1) (2007) 24-32] that if is finite then G admits a finite dimensional model for , the classifying space for proper actions.We conjecture that for any group G and we prove the conjecture for duality groups, fundamental groups of graphs of finite groups and fundamental groups of certain finite graphs of groups of type .     

Pseudovarieties defining classes of sofic subshifts closed under taking shift equivalent subshifts

For a pseudovariety of ordered semigroups, let be the class of sofic subshifts whose syntactic semigroup lies in . It is proved that if contains then is closed under taking shift equivalent subshifts, and conversely, if is closed under taking conjugate subshifts then contains and . Almost finite type subshifts are characterized as the irreducible elements of , which gives a new proof that the class of almost finite type subshifts is closed under taking shift equivalent subshifts.     

Hidden constructions in abstract algebra (6): The theorem of Maroscia and Brewer & Costa

We give a constructive deciphering for a generalization of the Quillen-Suslin theorem due to Maroscia and Brewer & Costa stating that finitely generated projective modules over , where is a Prüfer domain with Krull dimension ≤1, are extended from .     

The transitivity of induced maps

For a metric continuum X, we consider the hyperspaces X² and C(X) of the closed and nonempty subsets of X and of subcontinua of X, respectively, both with the Hausdorff metric. For a given map we investigate the transitivity of the induced maps and . Among other results, we show that if X is a dendrite or a continuum of type λ and is a map, then C(f) is not transitive. However, if X is the Hilbert cube, then there exists a transitive map such that f² and C(f) are transitive.     

Multivariate stress-strength reliability model and its evaluation for coherent structures

Consider a system which has n independent components (or subsystems) each consisting of m dependent elements. Let , i=1,2,…,n denote the random strength vector of the ith component, where denotes the random strength of the jth element of the ith component. The elements of the components are subjected to a common random stress over time. In this paper, we setup a multivariate stress-strength model based on the conditional ordering between s and and evaluate the reliability of coherent structures in this setup.
