One-dimensional interaction between a planar shock wave and a rubber or low-porosity foam is investigated experimentally and numerically. The considered polyurethane foam is of high density (ρ c=290 kg/m3) and lowporosity (ϕ=0.76), and this corresponds to an intermediate condition between rubber and high-porosity foam. Stress-strain relations for the low-porosity foam are investigated by machine tests, which show larger deformation against compressive force and higher non-linearity in stress-strain curve as compared with rubber. Also the low-porosity foam shows a hysteresis cycle. Experiments on shock wave-foam interactions are conducted by using a shock tube. Experimental time history of the surface stress of the foam at the end of the shock tube does not show shock type stress increase, but continuous excessive stress rise can be seen, and then dumping vibration approaching to gas dynamic pressure of the reflected shock wave is followed, and the highest stress amounts about 3∼4 times of the pressure after the reflected gas dynamic shock wave. Interactive motions of gas and the low-porosity foam are analyzed using the Lagrangean coordinates system. An elastic model for a low-porosity foam is assumed to be a single elastic material with the measured stress-strain relation. Results of numerical simulations are compared with the shock tube experiments, which show essentially same stress variations with experimental results.  相似文献

A Kolsky bar: Tension,tension-tension   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The present paper introduces a new technique which combines rotation disk and traditional Kolsky bar (often termed as split-Hopkinson bar). This technique can be employed to study the tension stress-strain relations and tension-unloading-tension strain-rate history effects of materials in the strain rate range from 102–103s−1. The rise time of the incident wave is as short as 15 μs because of the particular design. An attempt is made to estimate strain error caused by the thread connection between the specimen and the bars, and stress error due to the mismatch of the cross section of the specimen and bars. A short rise-time incident wave appears to be most advantageous in view of maintaining the accuracy of the stress-strain curve obtained near the initiation. Preliminary tests are performed on the instrument. Comments are made for this design configuration. M. The influence of strain rate, moisture content and loading direction on the stress-strain relationships for spruce wood has been investigated. The strain rates were approximately 8×10−3 s−1, 17s−1 and 1000 s−1, and the states of moisture content were those corresponding to oven dry, fiber saturated and fully saturated. Compressive loads were applied along the principal directions of the stem of the tree, i.e., radially, tangentially and axially. The low and medium strain-rate tests were performed with the aid of a servohydraulic testing machine, while the high strain-rate tests were carried out using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique. Magnesium or steel bars were used in the different SHPB tests in order to reduce impedance mismatch for the different directions of the wood specimens. The strain rate was found to have large influence on the behavior of the wood, especially under the condition of full saturation, where water transport in the deforming specimen is of major importance.

Tensile tests were conducted on dual-phase high-strength steel in a Split-Hopkinson Tension Bar at a strain-rate in the range of 150–600/s and in a servo-hydraulic testing machine at a strain-rate between 10?3 and 100/s. A novel specimen design was utilized for the Hopkinson bar tests of this sheet material. Digital image correlation was used together with high-speed photography to study strain localisation in the tensile specimens at high rates of strain. By using digital image correlation, it is possible to obtain in-plane displacement and strain fields during non-uniform deformation of the gauge section, and accordingly the strains associated with diffuse and localised necking may be determined. The full-field measurements in high strain-rate tests reveal that strain localisation started even before the maximum load was attained in the specimen. An elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model is used to predict the observed stress–strain behaviour and strain localisation for the dual-phase steel. Numerical simulations of dynamic tensile tests were performed using the non-linear explicit FE code LS-DYNA. Simulations were done with shell (plane stress) and brick elements. Good correlation between experiments and numerical predictions was achieved, in terms of engineering stress–strain behaviour, deformed geometry and strain fields. However, mesh density plays a role in the localisation of deformation in numerical simulations, particularly for the shell element analysis.  相似文献

Previous investigations on the effects of strain-rate and temperature histories on the mechanical behavior of steel are briefly reviewed. A study is presented on the influence of strain rate and strain-rate history on the shear behavior of a mild steel, over a wide range of temperature Experiments were performed on thin-walled tubular specimens of short gage length, using a torsional split-Hopkinson-bar apparatus adapted to permit quasi-static as well as dynamic straining at different temperatures. The constant-rate behavior was first measured at nominal strain rates of 10?3 and 103 s?1 for ?150, ?100, ?50, 20, 200 and 400°C. Tests were then carried out, at the same temperatures, in which the strain rate was suddenly increased during deformation from the lower to the higher rate at various large values of plastic strain. The increase in rate occurred in a time of the order of 20 μs so that relatively little change of strain took place during the jump. The low strain-rate results show a well-defined elastic limit but no yield drop, a small yield plateau is found at room temperature. The subsequent strain hardening shows a maximum at 200°C, when serrated flow occurs and the ductility is reduced. The high strain-rate results show a considerable drop of stress at yield. The post-yield flow stress decreases steadily with increasing temperature, throughout the temperature range investigated. At room temperature and below, the strain-hardening rate becomes negative at large strains. The adiabatic temperature rise in the dynamic tests was computed on the assumption that the plastic work is entirely converted to heat. This enabled the isothermal dynamic stress-strain curves to be calculated, and showed that considerable thermal softening took place. The initial response to a strain-rate jump is approximately elastic, and has a magnitude which increases with decrease of testing temperature; it is little affected by the amount of prestrain. At 200 and 400° C, a yield drop occurs after the initial stress increment. The post-jump flow stress is always greater than that for the same strain in a constant-rate dynamic test, the strain-hardening rate becoming negative at large strains or low testing temperature. This observed effect of strain-rate history cannot be explained by the thermal softening accompanying dynamic deformation. These and other results concerning total ductility under various strain-rate and temperature conditions show that strain-rate history strongly affects the mechanical behavior of the mild steel tested and, hence, should be taken into account in the formulation of constitutive equations for that material.  相似文献

An aluminum alloy1 was tested at quasi-static to dynamic strain-rates (from 10−1 to 5 103 s−1), using a single measuring device, a modified Split Hopkinson Bar. A wave separation technique [Bussac et al., J Mech Phys Solids 50:321–350, 2002] based on the maximum likelihood method was applied to process the strain and velocity measurements recorded at various points on each bar. With this method, it is possible to compute the stress, strain, displacement and velocity at any point on the bar. Since the measurement time is unlimited, the maximum strain measured in a given specimen no longer decreases with the strain-rate, as occurs with the classical Split Hopkinson Bar method. 1The authors wish to thank the automobile manufacturer who provided samples of the alloy used in this study. For reasons of commercial and industrial confidentiality, we were not informed about the composition of this alloy.  相似文献

An integrated experimental technique was developed for high-rate mechanical characterization of 304L stainless steel at elevated temperatures by using a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). A sandwich structure consisting of two platens and the specimen in between was heated before mechanical loading while the bars were maintained at room temperature to eliminate the temperature gradient effect on the wave propagation in the bars. Upon contacting the cold bars, temperature gradients form in the platens, leaving the temperature in specimen constant and uniform. Pulse shaping techniques were employed to maintain constant strain-rate deformation and dynamic stress equilibrium in the specimen. Dynamic compressive stress-strain curves at elevated temperatures for the 304L stainless steel were obtained. To relate recrystallization to impact loading, a momentum trapping system was employed to apply a single loading on the specimen during one dynamic experiment. We also controlled the quenching time to study its effect on recrystallization.  相似文献

Two-dimensional analysis of the split hopkinson pressure bar system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The split Hopkinson pressure bar is widely used to measure the dynamic properties of solid materials. This paper presents the results of the first comprehensive two-dimensional numerical analysis of the technique, and quantitatively describes the effects of realistic friction and of variations in both the specimen geometry and the imposed strain-rate on the validity of the assumptions used in analyzing experimental data. A two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical analysis is used to compute all components of the stress, strain and strain-rate tensors at each mesh point within the specimen and the elastic bars. The calculated response of the pressure bars is used to reconstruct the stress-strain behavior of the specimen and this is compared to both the input stress-strain curve and the actual calculated stress-strain states in the specimen. Thus, the validity of the assumptions and the corrections used in the analysis of the data is determined.Inertia and friction between the specimen and the elastic bars affect the response of the specimen differently for different length-to-diameter ratios. Inertia effects produce stress waves propagating radially and axially in the specimen and may result in an oscillating reconstructed stress-strain curve. If the ends of the specimen are well lubricated and care is taken to minimize the effects of inertia, the reconstructed stress-strain curve agrees with the input. However, serious stress and strain nonuniformity exists when the ends are not lubricated and this results in a reconstructed stress-strain curve where, for any given strain, the stress magnitude is larger than the correct value. A comparison of the calculations with experiment shows excellent agreement for various interface conditions. Finally, the inertia correction of E.D.H. Davies and S.C. Hunter (1963) is found to be reasonable.  相似文献

This study of the dynamic compressive strength properties of metal foams is in two parts. Part I presents data from an extensive experimental study of closed-cell Hydro/Cymat aluminium foam, which elucidates a number of key issues and phenomena. Part II focuses on modelling issues. The dynamic compressive response of the foam was investigated using a direct-impact technique for a range of velocities from 10 to . Elastic wave dispersion and attenuation in the pressure bar was corrected using a deconvolution technique.A new method of locating the point of densification in the nominal stress-strain curves of the foam is proposed, which provides a consistent framework for the definition of the plateau stress and the densification strain, both essential parameters of the ‘shock’ model in Part II. Data for the uniaxial, plastic collapse and plateau stresses are presented for two different average cell sizes of approximately 4 and 14 mm. They show that the plastic collapse strength of the foam changes significantly with compression rate. This phenomenon is discussed, and the distinctive roles of microinertia and ‘shock’ formation are described. The effects of compression rates on the initiation, development and distribution of cell crushing are also examined. Tests were carried out to examine the effects of density gradient and specimen gauge length at different rates of compression and the results are discussed. The origin of the conflicting conclusions in the literature on the correlation between nominal strain rate (ratio of the impact velocity Vi to the initial gauge length lo of the specimen) and the dynamic strength of aluminium alloy foams is identified and explained.  相似文献

泡沫铝材料动态本构参数的实验确定   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Highly precompressed 1020 HR steel, 0.65 prestrain at 400°F (204°C), tested in nominally uniform tension at ?80°F (?62°C) fractures at about 110,000 psi (760 MN/m2) with less than 0.02 plastic strain. Yet the addition of a hydrostatic pressure of less than 7000 psi (48 MN/m2) converts this visually brittle fracture to a ductile one with appreciable necking. The explanation of this surprising experimental result is shown to follow directly and simply from the combination of a tensile stress criterion of fracture, strain concentration and the low tangent modulus of the stress-strain curve in tension beyond the Bauschinger transition region of a few percent of plastic strain. Temperature dependence and strain-rate dependence of brittle fracture similarly are predictable in an almost trivial manner from the appropriate stress-strain curves for different amounts of precompression. So also is the amazingly high ductility or fracture toughness of the most complex of perforated or notched statically loaded structures of mild steel in an undamaged or fully annealed state.  相似文献

Quasi-static and compressive fatigue tests on the closed cell Al-Si-Ca alloy foam specimens with three different aspect ratios were performed. It turned out that the onset of cyclic shortening of foam with a lower aspect ratio took place earlier and the fatigue strength was lower compared with the specimen with a higher aspect ratio, although all the dimensions of specimen satisfied the seven times the cell size criterion, while the quasi-static stress-strain curves were almost same having same Young's modulus, yield stress and plateau stress. Therefore, the seven times the cell size criterion for the quasi-static compression behavior was not applicable to the fatigue analysis of Al-Si-Ca alloy foam.  相似文献

以泡沫陶瓷复合材料在防护工程中的应用为背景,利用MTS(Material Test System,材料试验机)对该型材料进行了准静态压缩实验。

A device for impact compression experiments is the split Hopkinson pressure bar with a refrigerating attemperator. Data for incident and reflected waves are obtained by the measuring technique with strain gauges, and data for transmitted waves are obtained by the measuring technique with semiconductor gauges. Static compression tests of frozen clay are conducted at an identical temperature and different strain rates of 0.001 and 0.01 sec −1 . Dynamic stress-strain curves are obtained at strain rates of 360–1470 sec −1 . The low and high temperatures correspond to high and low strain rates, respectively. It is shown that both the temperature and strain rate affect the frozen soil deformation process. Different dynamic stress-strain curves obtained at the same temperature but different strain rates are found to converge. The test results indicate that frozen soil has both temperature-brittleness and impact-brittleness.  相似文献

Methods of investigating the plastic flow of materials at high rates are reviewed, and experiments are described in which thin-walled tubular specimens were subjected to dynamic torsional loading. These experiments were performed using a modified version of a torsional Hopkinsonbar apparatus used in earlier work. The results show that, at strain rates of order 103 sec−1, the stress-strain curve of the alloy tested does not differ significantly from that found at 10−3 sec−1. In tests involving the propagation of a stress increment, however, it was found that the speed of propagation was that of elastic shear waves, indicating that the initial response of the material is essentially rate dependent.  相似文献
