A space X is called C-closed if every countably compact subset of X is closed in X. We study the properties of C-closed spaces. Among other results, it is shown that countably compact C-closed spaces have countable tightness and under Martin's Axiom or 2ω0<2ω1, C-closed is equivalent to sequential for compact Hausdorff spaces. Furthermore, every hereditarily quasi-k Hausdorff space is Fréchet-Urysohn, which generalizes a theorem of Arhangel'sk in [4]. Also every hereditarily q-space is hereditarily of pointwise countable type and contains an open dense first countable subspace.  相似文献

We investigate in ZF (i.e., Zermelo‐Fraenke set theory without the axiom of choice) conditions that are necessary and sufficient for countable products ∏m∈ℕXm of (a) finite Hausdorff spaces Xm resp. (b) Hausdorff spaces Xm with at most n points to be compact resp. Baire. Typica results: (i) Countable products of finite Hausdorff spaces are compact (resp. Baire) if and only if countable products of non‐empty finite sets are non‐empty. (ii) Countable products of discrete spaces with at most n + 1 points are compact (resp. Baire) if and only if countable products of non‐empty sets with at most n points are non‐empty.  相似文献

Summary Let E be a locally compact Hausdorff space with a countable base, and suppose {xn} is a countable collection of points in E. Particles enter E at the site x n according to a Poisson process N n (t). Upon entrance to E, a typical particle moves through the space, independently of all other particles, according to the transition law of a Markov process, until its death, which occurs at some random time D. We prove several limit theorems for various functional of this infinite particle system. In particular, laws of large numbers, and central limit theorems are proved for occupation times of relatively compact Borel sets.Supported in part by Arizona State University Grant-in-Aid  相似文献

S. Dolecki, G. Greco and A. Lechicki call a space X consonant if the co-compact topology and the upper Kuratowski topology on the set of closed subsets of X coincide. We call a space X hyperconsonant if Fell's topology and the (Kuratowski) convergence topology coincide. Recently, we proved that a first countable, locally paracompact, T 3-space is hyperconsonant if and only if the space possesses at most one point without a compact neighbourhood, extending the same result of D. Fremlin obtained for metrizable spaces. In this paper, we pursue the study of hyperconsonance within the framework of point spaces (countable T 1-spaces with exactly one accumulation point) and we compare consonance and hyperconsonance in such spaces. In particular, we answer a question of T. Nogura and D. Shakhmatov: does there exist a nonconsonant point space? We provide a Fréchet, -point space which is not consonant. Moreover, this example proves that the consonance is not preserved by continuous closed compact-covering maps of separable complete metrizable spaces onto Hausdorff spaces.  相似文献

In the first two sections, we study when a σ-compact space can be covered by a point-finite family of compacta. The main result in this direction concerns topological vector spaces. Theorem 2.4 implies that if such a space L admits a countable point-finite cover by compacta, then L has a countable network. It follows that if f is a continuous mapping of a σ-compact locally compact space X onto a topological vector space L, and fibers of f are compact, then L is a σ-compact space with a countable network (Theorem 2.10). Therefore, certain σ-compact topological vector spaces do not have a stronger σ-compact locally compact topology. In the last, third section, we establish a result going in the orthogonal direction: if a compact Hausdorff space X is the union of two subspaces which are homeomorphic to topological vector spaces, then X is metrizable (Corollary 3.2).  相似文献

We prove that if X is a locally compact σ-compact space, then on its quotient, γ(X) say, determined by the algebra of all real valued bounded continuous functions on X, the quotient topology and the completely regular topology defined by this algebra are equal. It follows from this that if X is second countable locally compact, then γ(X) is second countable locally compact Hausdorff if and only if it is first countable. The interest in these results originated in [1] and [7] where the primitive ideal space of a C*-algebra was considered.  相似文献

It is proved that in a T 3 space countable closed sets have countable character if and only if the set of limit point of the space is a countable compact set and every compact set is of countable character. Also, it is shown that spaces where countable sets have countable character are WN-spaces and are very close to M-spaces. Finally, some questions of Dai and Lia are discussed and some questions are proposed.  相似文献

A Hausdorff locally convex space is said to be c0-barrelled (respectively ω-barrelled) if each sequence in the dual space that converges weakly to 0 (respectively that is weakly bounded), is equicontinuous. It is proved that if a c0-barrelled space E has dual E′ weakly sequentially complete, then every subspace of countable codimension of E is c0-barrelled. We prove that the hypothesis on E′ cannot be dropped and we supply an example of a complete c0-barrelled space with dual weakly sequentially complete that is not ω-barrelled.  相似文献

It is shown to be consistent that there is a normal first countable locally countable space which is not collectionwise Hausdorff and in which there is a closed discrete non-G δ set which provides the counterexample to collectionwise Hausdorffness. This answers a question of P. Nyikos. Publication 349, partially supported by the BSF.  相似文献

We show that the existence of a countable, first countable, zero-dimensional, compact Hausdorff space which is not second countable, hence not metrizable, is consistent with ZF.

We prove the following statements: (1) every Tychonoff linked-Lindelöf (centered-Lindelöf, star countable) space can be represented as a closed subspace in a Tychonoff pseudocompact absolutely star countable space; (2) every Hausdorff (regular, Tychonoff) linked-Lindelöf space can be represented as a closed G δ-subspace in a Hausdorff (regular, Tychonoff) absolutely star countable space; (3) there exists a pseudocompact absolutely star countable Tychonoff space having a regular closed subspace which is not star countable (hence not absolutely star countable); (4) assuming $2^{\aleph _0 } = 2^{\aleph _1 }$ , there exists an absolutely star countable normal space having a regular closed subspace which is not star countable (hence not absolutely star countable).  相似文献

Our paper studies the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on the space of densely continuous forms (introduced by Hammer and McCoy (1997)), usco and minimal usco maps. We generalize and complete results from Hammer and McCoy (1997) concerning the space D(X,Y) of densely continuous forms from X to Y. Let X be a Hausdorff topological space, (Y,d) be a metric space and D k (X,Y) the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on D(X,Y). We prove the following main results: D k (X,Y) is metrizable iff D k (X,Y) is first countable iff X is hemicompact. This result gives also a positive answer to question 4.1 of McCoy (1998). If moreover X is a locally compact hemicompact space and (Y,d) is a locally compact complete metric space, then D k (X,Y) is completely metrizable, thus improving a result from McCoy (1998). We study also the question, suggested by Hammer and McCoy (1998), when two compatible metrics on Y generate the same topologies of uniform convergence on compact sets on D(X,Y). The completeness of the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on the space of set-valued maps with closed graphs, usco and minimal usco maps is also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we show that the self-adjoint Fredholm operators in a type II factor form a classifying space forK 1 (X) R for X a compact Hausdorff space. We also extend this result to the standard Hilbert module over a simple, purely infinite C*-algebra which is either unital or has a countable approximate identity consisting of projections.  相似文献

In this work we expand upon the theory of open ultrafilters in the setting of regular spaces. In [E. van Douwen, Remote points, Dissertationes Math. (Rozprawy Mat.) 188 (1981) 1-45], van Douwen showed that if X is a non-feebly compact Tychonoff space with a countable π-base, then βX has a remote point. We develop a related result for the class of regular spaces which shows that in a non-feebly compact regular space X with a countable π-base, there exists a free open ultrafilter on X that is also a regular filter.Of central importance is a result of Mooney [D.D. Mooney, H-bounded sets, Topology Proc. 18 (1993) 195-207] that characterizes open ultrafilters as open filters that are saturated and disjoint-prime. Smirnov [J.M. Smirnov, Some relations on the theory of dimensions, Mat. Sb. 29 (1951) 157-172] showed that maximal completely regular filters are disjoint prime, from which it was concluded that βX is a perfect extension for a Tychonoff space X. We extend this result, and other results of Skljarenko [E.G. Skljarenko, Some questions in the theory of bicompactifications, Amer. Math. Soc. Transl. Ser. 2 58 (1966) 216-266], by showing that a maximal regular filter on any Hausdorff space is disjoint prime.Open ultrafilters are integral to the study of maximal points and lower topologies in the partial order of Hausdorff topologies on a fixed set. We show that a maximal point in a Hausdorff space cannot have a neighborhood base of feebly compact neighborhoods. One corollary is that no locally countably compact Hausdorff topology is a lower topology, which was shown previously under the additional assumption of countable tightness by Alas and Wilson [O. Alas, R. Wilson, Which topologies can have immediate successors in the lattice of T1-topologies? Appl. Gen. Topol. 5 (2004) 231-242]. Another is that a maximal point in a feebly compact space is not a regular point. This generalizes results of both Carlson [N. Carlson, Lower upper topologies in the Hausdorff partial order on a fixed set, Topology Appl. 154 (2007) 619-624] and Costantini [C. Costantini, On some questions about posets of topologies on a fixed set, Topology Proc. 32 (2008) 187-225].  相似文献

A semigroup S is called an absolute coretract if for any continuous homomorphism f from a compact Hausdorff right topological semigroup T onto a compact Hausdorff right topological semigroup containing S algebraically there exists a homomorphism g \colon S→ T such that f\circ g=id S . The semigroup β\ben contains isomorphic copies of any countable absolute coretract. In this article we define a class C of semigroups of idempotents each of which is a decreasing chain of rectangular semigroups. It is proved that every semigroup from C is an absolute coretract and every finite semigroup of idempotents, which is an absolute coretract, belongs to C . July 25, 2000  相似文献

It is shown that: (1) any action of a Moscow group G on a first countable, Dieudonné complete (in particular, on a metrizable) space X can uniquely be extended to an action of the Dieudonné completion γG on X, (2) any action of a locally pseudocompact topological group G on a b f -space (in particular, on a first countable space) X can uniquely be extended to an action of the Weil completion on the Dieudonné completion γX of X. As a consequence, we obtain that, for each locally pseudocompact topological group G, every G-space with the b f -property admits an equivariant embedding into a compact Hausdorff G-space. Furthermore, for each pseudocompact group G, every metrizable G-space has a G-invariant metric compatible with its topology. We also give a direct construction of such an invariant metric. Herrlich and Strecker characterized the category Comp 2 of compact Hausdorff spaces as the only nontrivial full epireflective subcategory in the category Top 2 of all Hausdorff spaces that is concretely isomorphic to a variety in the sense of universal algebra including infinitary operations. The original proof of this result requires Noble's theorem, i.e. a space is compact Hausdorff iff every of its powers is normal, which is far from being elementary. Likewise, Petz' characterization of the class of compact Hausdorff spaces as the only nontrivial epireflective subcategory of Top 2, which is closed under dense extensions (= epimorphisms in Top 2) and strictly contained in Top 2 is based on a result by Kattov stating that a space is compact Hausdorff iff its every closed subspace is H-closed. This note offers an elementary approach for both, instead.Presented at the European Colloquium of Category Theory, Tours, France, 25–31 July 1994.  相似文献

We introduce a new cardinal invariant, core of a space, defined for any locally compact Hausdorff space X and denoted by cor(X). Locally compact spaces of countable core generalize locally compact σ-compact spaces in a way that is slightly exotic, but still quite natural. We show in Section 1 that under a broad range of conditions locally compact spaces of countable core must be σ-compact. In particular, normal locally compact spaces of countable core and realcompact locally compact spaces of countable core are σ-compact. Perfect mappings preserve the class of spaces of countable core in both directions (Section 2). The Alexandroff compactification aX is weakly first countable at the Alexandroff point a if and only if cor(X)=ω (Section 3). Two examples of non-σ-compact locally compact spaces of countable core are discussed in Section 3. We also extend the well-known theorem of Alexandroff and Urysohn on the cardinality of perfectly normal compacta to compacta satisfying a weak version of perfect normality. Several open problems are formulated.  相似文献

LetX be an Hausdorff space. We say thatX is a CO space, ifX is compact and every closed subspace ofX is homeomorphic to a clopen subspace ofX, andX is a hereditarily CO space (HCO space), if every closed subspace is a CO space. It is well-known that every well-ordered chain with a last element, endowed with the interval topology, is an HCO space, and every HCO space is scattered. In this paper, we show the following theorems: Theorem (R. Bonnet):
  1. Every HCO space which is a continuous image of a compact totally disconnected interval space is homeomorphic to β+1 for some ordinal β.
  2. Every HCO space of countable Cantor-Bendixson rank is homeomorphic to α+1 for some countable ordinal α.
Theorem (S. Shelah):Assume \(\diamondsuit _{\aleph _1 } \) . Then there is a HCO compact space X of Cantor-Bendixson rankω 1} and of cardinality ?1 such that:
  1. X has only countably many isolated points,
  2. Every closed subset of X is countable or co-countable,
  3. Every countable closed subspace of X is homeomorphic to a clopen subspace, and every uncountable closed subspace of X is homeomorphic to X, and
  4. X is retractive.
In particularX is a thin-tall compact space of countable spread, and is not a continuous image of a compact totally disconnected interval space. The question whether it is consistent with ZFC, that every HCO space is homeomorphic to an ordinal, is open.  相似文献

This paper presents results concerning those sets of finite Borel measures μ on a locally compact Hausdorff space X with countable topological base which can be represented as the set of limit distributions of some sequence. They arc characterized by being nonanpty, closed, connected and containing only measures μ with μ(X) = 1 (if X is compact) or 0 ≤ μ(X) ≤ 1 (if X is not compact). Any set with this properties can be obtained as the set of limit distributions of a sequence even by rearranging an arbitrarily given sequence which is dense in the sense that the set of accumulation points is the whole space X. The typical case (in the sense of Baire categories) is that a sequence takes as limit distributions all possible measures of this kind. This gives new aspects for the recent theory of maldistribukd sequences.  相似文献
