This paper documents an experimental study that was conducted to demonstrate the sensitivity of the shear gage to the presence of normal strains. The shear gage is a specially designed strain gage rosette that measures the average shear strain in the test section of notched specimens such as the losipescu, Arcan and compact shear specimens. These specimens can have complicated stress states with high shear and normal strain gradients. To evaluate the sensitivity of the shear gage to normal strains, shear gages were tested on an Arcan specimen. The Arcan specimen is a notched specimen that can be loaded in pure shear (90 deg), pure tension (0 deg) and at intermediate 15- deg increments. The shear modulus for an aluminum specimen was determined at each of these loading angles. It was found that the gages display nearly zero sensitivity to normal strains ( x, y). Moiré interferometry was used to document the shear and normal strain distributions in the test section and to provide an independent method for determining the average shear strain. These results reinforce the robust nature of testing with the shear gage.  相似文献

目前基于临界平面理论的高周疲劳寿命预测模型, 大都充分考虑了法向平均应力对材料疲劳寿命的影响, 但是没有有效反映剪切平均应力对疲劳寿命的影响. 通过分析7075-T651铝合金的试验数据发现, 与法向拉平均应力类似, 剪切平均应力同样对材料的疲劳寿命产生不利影响. 因此, 如果寿命预测模型中忽略剪切平均应力的影响, 存在明显剪切平均应力加载工况下, 预测寿命可能偏于危险. 由此, 本文定义具有较大法向应力的最大剪应力范围平面为临界平面, 建立了一个能够同时反映法向和剪切平均应力影响的高周疲劳寿命预测模型, 并给出了模型中材料常数的确定方法. 新模型首先将基于应变的Fatemi-Socie准则, 推广到材料的高周疲劳寿命预测, 给出了Fatemi-Socie准则的应力表述形式. 然后, 引入剪切和法向Walker因子, 反映剪切和法向平均应力对材料疲劳寿命的影响. 剪切和法向Walker因子的取值都介于0和1之间, 不同取值反映了材料对剪切和法向平均应力敏感程度的不同. 新模型适用于范围内的金属塑性材料. 利用5种材料在12种存在平均应力加载工况下的试验数据, 对所建模型进行了试验验证, 结果表明预测结果与试验结果吻合良好, 绝大多数寿命预测结果分布在3倍误差带以内.   相似文献

A method for measuring the stress tensor of liquids obeying the stress-optical rule is presented. In particular, the procedure makes it possible to determine the shear stress, and the first and second normal stress differences for rheometric flows. This technique is an extension of the procedure recently described by Burghardt and coworkers (Brown et al., 1995) wherein light is sent obliquely through a sample sheared between transparent plates. However, in the present development, the light is transmitted in the plane containing the velocity gradient and neutral directions, thereby reducing the necessary optical measurements by one. A polystyrene-tricresyl phosphate (TCP) solution is used as the test sample. The first and second normal stress differences in steady shear flow measured by this method show good agreement with the mechanical results measured by Madga et al. (1993) using a modified cone and plate rheometer. The transient behavior of the first and second normal stress differences following the start-up of shear flow is also presented.  相似文献

A model of non-linear viscoelasticity with relaxation times which depend on the structure is compared with experimental results reported in the literature for a L.D. polyethylene.The single parameter of the model is determined by comparison with steadystate shear results. The model is then used to interpret various transient data. These are: tangential and normal stress growth in shear, stress growth in elongation, normal stresses in shear creep.The comparison shows a good general agreement, thus supporting the suggestion of relating the change in time of the relaxation spectrum to structural variables.  相似文献

  The behavior of a low-density polyethylene melt in exponential shear strain histories is examined and compared to its behavior in constant rate planar elongation. A new set of shear stress and first normal stress difference data in exponential shear are presented and used in several different material functions that have been previously proposed. Viscosities composed of principal stress differences for the two flows showed no correspondence suggesting that, contrary to previous assertions, exponential shear and constant rate planar elongation flows are fundamentally different. The rheological properties of a starch suspension are usually studied through two viscosity measurements-pasting behavior and flow behavior of the resulting starch pastes-performed separately with two different tools and demanding rather high starch concentrations (6–10 wt %). This study focused on the feasibility of using a rheometer fitted with a starch stirrer cell to characterize, in a single experiment, the starch suspension’s behavior during and after pasting, all the while involving only low concentrations (2–4 wt %), more representative of a real-food context. A calibration of the starch stirrer cell in comparison to the coaxial cylinders one was done using model fluids (Newtonian and shear-thinning). A link between torque, rotational speed, and rheological properties was determined through two recalculated conversion factors (shear rate and shear stress). An operating diagram was then set indicating the laminar flow and good sensitivity domain for this cell. The accuracy of those constants to starch suspensions in the concentration range 2–4 wt % was demonstrated. The pasting behaviors of 2 wt % starch suspensions were followed successfully at two selected shear rates (13.5 and 135 s?1). The impact of the level of turbulence on the profiles obtained was stressed, a result that is not limited to low-concentration starch suspensions. Finally, the method developed was used to compare the pasting behaviors of 2 wt % native and modified waxy maize starch suspensions.  相似文献

We derived for the first time the relationships among shear stress and normal stress differences for ellipsoidal interfaces under large step shear strains considering interface velocity term and Laplace pressure term in the expression of the stress tensor for mixtures of two Newtonian fluids. In the derivation, orientation angle of the interface is assumed to be given by the affine deformation assumption and is independent of time based on experimental results for blends with 0.048 ≤ K ≤ 0.54 where K is the ratio of droplet viscosity to matrix viscosity. For ellipsoidal droplets, the shear stress is only proportional to the first normal stress difference. On the other hand, for spheroidal droplets, proportionality among the shear stress, the first and the second normal stress differences was derived, and the ratio of the second normal stress difference to the first normal stress difference was given as a function of step strain. The shear stress and the first normal stress difference obtained experimentally satisfy the derived relationship, indicating applicability of the stress expression for polymer blends.  相似文献

Although normal stress differences in liquids have conventionally been associated with polymers, aspects of rheological behavior in lubricated concentrated contacts suggest that normal stress difference may be significant in even low molecular weight liquids sheared under high pressure and high shear stress. A torsional flow rheogoniometer was constructed for use at high (300 MPa) pressure. Four typical liquid lubricants were investigated, including one polymer/mineral oil solution. Shear stress and N 2-N 2 are reported as functions of shear rate. The effect of pressure variation is reported for two liquids. Results are compared with predictive techniques and a molecular dynamics simulation. Simple low molecular weight lubricant base oils can generate measurable and significant normal stress differences when sheared at high shear stress.  相似文献

颗粒材料的剪切流动行为广泛地存在于滑坡、泥石流等自然灾害以及矿物原料传输、泵送等工业过程中.颗粒材料在不同体积分数、剪切速率和应力约束下会表现出不同的流动状态并发生相互转化.对颗粒材料在剪切流动过程中力学特性的研究有助于加深理解其发生不同流动状态的内在机理,为解决相应的颗粒材料问题提供理论依据.为此,本文研制了颗粒材料剪切流动的中型环剪仪,并对颗粒材料在不同法向约束应力和剪切速率下的剪切应力和体积膨胀率进行了测试.结果表明,剪切应力和体积膨胀率均随剪切速率的增大而增大,但增长速率在临界剪切速率处发生转变,使其随剪切速率的平方呈分段式线性增长.通过对颗粒材料在不同剪切速率和惯性数下有效摩擦系数变化趋势的分析,讨论了颗粒材料由慢速流向快速流转化的基本规律,以及在临界剪切速率处发生流动状态转化的内在条件.此外,通过对不同法向应力下临界剪切速率以及快速流动下运动规律的测试,发现临界剪切速率随法向应力的增加而减小,即法向应力可促进颗粒材料由慢速流向快速流的转化,但在快速流动状态下的有效摩擦系数对法向应力不敏感.以上对颗粒材料在不同剪切速率、法向应力下流动状态的环剪试验研究有助于揭示其发生不同流动状态转化的内在机理.   相似文献

 We investigate the variations in the shear stress and the first and second normal stress differences of suspensions formulated with viscoelastic fluids as the suspending medium. The test materials comprise two different silicone oils for the matrix fluids and glass spheres of two different mean diameters spanning a range of volume fractions between 5 and 25%. In agreement with previous investigations, the shear stress–shear rate functions of the viscoelastic suspensions were found to be of the same form as the viscometric functions of their matrix fluids, but progressively shifted along the shear rate axis to lower shear rates with increasing solid fraction. The normal stress differences in all of the suspensions examined can be conveniently represented as functions of the shear stress in the fluid. When plotted in this form, the first normal stress difference, as measured with a cone and plate rheometer, is positive in magnitude but strongly decreases with increasing solid fraction. The contributions of the first and the second normal stress differences are separated by using normal force measurements with parallel plate fixtures in conjunction with the cone-and-plate observations. In this way it is possible for the first time to quantify successfully the variations in the second normal stress difference of viscoelastic suspensions for solid fractions of up to 25 vol.%. In contrast to measurements of the first normal stress difference, the second normal stress difference is negative with a magnitude that increases with increasing solid content. The changes in the first and second normal stress differences are also strongly correlated to each other: The relative increase in the second normal stress difference is equal to the relative decrease of the first normal stress difference at the same solid fraction. The variations of the first as well as of the second normal stress difference are represented by power law functions of the shear stress with an unique power law exponent that is independent of the solid fraction. The well known edge effects that arise in cone-and-plate as well as parallel-plate rheometry and limit the accessible measuring range in highly viscoelastic materials to low shear rates could be partially suppressed by utilizing a custom- designed guard-ring arrangement. This paper presents measurements of a plane jet impinging onto a normal flat plate placed up to five jet widths from the jet outlet. The small spacing ensured that the stagnation streamline remained in the potential core of the jet. The plate shear stress distribution compared well to that from an analytical solution for the laminar development of the plate boundary layer whose external velocity was determined from the measured pressure. By comparing the shear stress measured under the present low level of free stream turbulence (0.35%) at the jet exit with that of Tu and Wood [Exp. Thermal Fluid Sci. 13 (1996) 364–373] made at about 4%, it is concluded that the turbulence level at the nozzle exit has only a second-order influence on the surface shear stress around the stagnation point. Some spanwise non-uniformity was observed in the plate shear stress, but this was confined largely to the transition region. The mean velocity, Reynolds stresses, and fluctuating pressure were measured along the stagnation streamline using a fast-response pressure probe. A significant increase in the streamwise normal stress and the mean square of the pressure fluctuations occurred before they were eventually attenuated by the plate. This increase occurred in the region where the streamwise velocity was decreasing close to the plate causing extra energy production through the normal stresses. Spectra of the velocity and pressure fluctuations showed that the increase in level was mainly due to the low frequency motion, whereas the subsequent decrease occurred at higher frequencies.  相似文献

Distributions of shear strains and strain states (triaxiality) were analysed for two in-plane shear test fixtures (Iosipescu and V-notched rail), using digital image correlation and numerical simulations. Three different polypropylene-based materials (two talc-filled compounds and one unfilled homopolymer) were tested. The three materials behaved differently in the shear tests. Most notably, cracks developed in tension near the notches for the particle-filled materials, while the unfilled homopolymer did not fracture. There were also differences between the materials regarding strain localisation between the notches, strain rates vs. strain level (for a given cross-head speed), thickness change in the sheared section, and triaxiality. The yield stresses in shear, uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression showed pressure sensitivity. At least for equivalent strain rates below 1?s?1, the strain rate sensitivity of the yield stress was approximately the same in these three stress states. The stress?Cstrain curves obtained with the two methods were quite similar for these materials. There were some differences between the methods regarding the ease of mounting and aligning specimens, the complexity of specimen deformation patterns, and the uniformity of the shear strain distribution between the notches.  相似文献

Nonlinear viscoelasticity of PP/PS/SEBS blends   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) blends compatibilized or not with the linear triblock copolymer (styrene-ethylene-/butylene-styrene, SEBS) was investigated. Start-up of steady-shear at rates from 0.1 to 10 s–1 was carried out using a controlled strain rotational rheometer and a sliding plate rheometer for strain histories involving one or several shear rates. The shear stress and first normal shear stress difference were measured as functions of time, and the morphologies of the samples before and after shearing were determined. For each strain history except that involving a single shear rate of 0.1 s–1 the blends showed typical non-linear viscoelastic behavior: a shear stress overshoot/undershoot, depending on the history, followed by a steady state for each step. The first normal stress difference increased monotonically to a steady-state value. The values of the stresses increased with the addition of SEBS. The shear stress overshoot and undershoot and the times at which they occurred depended strongly on the strain history, decreasing for a subsequent shear rate step performed in the same direction as the former, and the time at which stress undershoot occurred increased for a subsequent shear rate step performed in the opposite direction, irrespective of the magnitude of the shear rate. This behavior was observed for all the blends studied. The time of overshoot in a single-step shear rate experiment is inversely proportional to the shear rate, and the steady-state value of N1 scaled linearly with shear rate, whereas the steady-state shear stress did not. The average diameter of the dispersed phase decreased for all strain histories when the blend was not compatibilized. When the blend was compatibilized, the average diameter of the dispersed phase changed only during the stronger flows. Experimental data were compared with the predictions of a model formulated using ideas of Doi and Ohta (1991), Lacroix et al. (1998) and Bousmina et al. (2001). The model correctly predicted the behavior of the uncompatibilized blends for single-step shear rates but not that of the compatibilized blends, nor did it predict morphologies after shearing.  相似文献

将变宽度截面箱梁的剪力滞翘曲位移函数定义为三次抛物线形式,用能量变分原理建立了分析变宽截面箱梁剪力滞效应的控制微分方程,并用差分法求解此方程。分别计算了简支箱梁在集中荷载和均布荷载作用下的正应力,并用有限元法作了验证。将计算结果与等截面箱梁的应力进行对比,总结变宽箱梁剪力滞效应的分布规律。结果表明,均布荷载作用下,相对于等截面梁,变宽箱梁的顶板应力变化幅度更大,峰值更高,箱梁的顶板宽度变化对剪力滞效应影响较大;在集中荷载作用下,等截面与变宽度箱梁跨中截面的应力相近,应力分布曲线吻合较好,说明顶板宽度变化对剪力滞效应影响较小;分别在集中和均布荷载作用下,箱梁跨中截面应力均为正剪力滞分布状态。当箱梁顶板、底板和悬臂板宽度相等时,剪力滞效应控制微分方程也适用于等截面箱梁。  相似文献

The sensitivity of flow-induced crystallisation (FIC) to the nature of flow type is demonstrated using a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for two different flow geometries. A contraction–expansion slit geometry was used to create a mixed, but primarily simple shear flow, while a cross-slot geometry provided a region within the flow of high extension. Flow-induced birefringence was captured at a melt processing temperature of 155 °C to identify the principal stress difference within the two flows and determine regions of higher stress within the HDPE. The experiments were then repeated at 125 °C, and FIC was identified using bright-field observation. Crystallisation was observed within the regions that previously exhibited high stress levels. It was found that lower deformation rates in pure shear were required when compared with simple shear to create the crystal filaments.  相似文献

This paper reports an experimental investigation to test the hypothesis that the critical resolved shear stress is independent of the resolved normal stress on the active slip system plane. The resolved normal stress is varied independently for crystals of constant orientation by applying a uniform biaxial tension stress through slitted rubber strips glued to a flat tension sample. It is found that the critical resolved shear stress is constant until the resolved normal stress on the active slip system becomes twice the resolved shear stress; and then, for further increases in the resolved normal stress, the critical resolved shear stress begins to decrease.  相似文献

A slit die apparatus is used to measure exit pressures for five different polymer melts. Viscosity data obtained from the same apparatus agree well with values obtained from a cone-and-plate rheometer or a capillary rheometer. Except for a PVC sample where thermal degradation was found to occur, the exit pressures obtained by linear extrapolation of the measured pressure profiles are all positive, and increase with increasing shear stress. The values of the first normal stress difference calculated according to the exit pressure theory are of the right order of magnitude and in some cases correlate satisfactorily with values measured in a cone-and-plate rheometer. However, the high sensitivity of the exit pressure values to the method of extrapolation and the wild scatter of exit pressure data for some materials make it difficult to use the exit pressure method as a routine procedure for accurate determination of the first normal stress difference.  相似文献

An in-plane shear specimen made of dual phase steel designed for ductile fracture studies is presented and then analyzed experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, digital image correlation (DIC) technique is utilized to measure the deformation of the specimen. Based on the implicit nonlinear FE solver Abaqus/Standard, numerical analysis of the specimen is performed by using plane stress and solid elements respectively. The elongation of the specimen’s gauge length and the shear strain distribution within the shear zone are compared between the experimental and numerical results and a general good agreement is obtained. Thereafter, based on calculated results, the stress state of the shear zone is investigated in detail. It is shown that the shear stress is dominant within the shear zone despite of the emergence of normal stresses. The deformation is concentrated in the shear zone, where the incipient fracture is most likely to occur. The stress triaxiality and the Lode parameter at the fracture initiation are found to be maintained at a relatively low level, which implies that the stress state achieved by the specimen is close to pure shear. The present study demonstrates that the proposed in-plane shear specimen is suitable for investigation of the fracture behavior of high strength materials under shear stress states.  相似文献
