In order to study alternative dose determination methods, the bulk etching velocity and the latent track annealing of LR 115 track detectors was studied during electron irradiation runs from a Pelletron accelerator. For this purpose alpha irradiated and blank detectors were exposed to increasing electron doses from 10.5 to 317.5 kGy. After the irradiation with electrons the detectors were etched under routine conditions, except for the etching time, that was varied for each electron dose in order to reach a fixed residual thickness. The variation of the bulk etching velocity as a function of each one of the electron doses supplied, was interpolated in order to obtain dosimetric response curves. The observed annealing effect on the latent tracks is discussed as a function of the total electron doses supplied and the temperature.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of the influence of soft X-ray radiation on craters induced in SSNTDs by energetic α particles and protons of energy in the MeV range. We checked two detectors of the PM-355 and CR-39 types in order to verify and compare their resistance to the harsh conditions of high-temperature plasma experiments. To determine this effect some detector samples were first irradiated with α particles emitted from natural α particle sources and protons delivered by a particle accelerator. After that these samples were exposed to soft X ray radiation emitted from an X ray tube and also from the PF-1000 Plasma Focus facility. Doses during X ray irradiations varied from 0 up to tens of kGy. The irradiated samples were then etched in steps and track diameters were determined versus the absorbed dose and etching time and compared with those measured in samples not exposed to X ray radiation.  相似文献

Photosensitization of polymer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bombarded with swift heavy ions (Xe) was studied. Ultraviolet (UV)- and γ-irradiation were used for sensitization. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used to study the radiolysis products in latent tracks (directly in the sample or in the etching solution). It was found that the exposure of the sample to ultraviolet light results in the transformation of the radiolysis products formed in the tracks into terephthalic acid. Surface defects, detected by AFM, were found to correspond to tracks; their form (cavities and hillocks) and size changing reflect the changing of latent track state. It was found that UV irradiation destroyed the cross-linked regions in the tracks. This process (photodecomposition) was shown to be the key stage of the UV sensitization and the main cause of etching rate increase. The γ-irradiation effect on track etching was found to be almost the same.  相似文献

The state-of-the-art in the electrochemical etching (ECE) amplification of charged particle tracks in polymeric detectors and its applications in particular in radiation dosimetry are presented and discussed in this paper. During the past quarter of century, extensive efforts have been made on research and development in the world as well as at NRPD in AEOI on production of high voltage generators, construction of ECE chamber systems, optimization of ECE conditions, development of detectors, studies on basic physical and chemical phenomena, promotion of large-scale applications, etc. Quality high voltage generators can now be home made or are commercially available. The ECE chamber systems are advanced for special purposes as well as for large-scale applications (e.g. pressure chamber, triplet ECE or TECE chamber, etc. from NRPD). Many parameters have been optimized and new parameters such as internal heating, pressure, detector dimensions, etchant volume, chamber insulation, etc. have been recently discovered. Lexan polycarbonates (PC) and CR-39 have been shown to be the most successful detectors for ECE, while other detectors were also applied. The fundamental phenomena including “dielectric breakdown”, “dielectric loss”, “electro-osmosis”, “dielectrophoresis”, “electrostriction”, etc. although primarily proved to exist and studied, need to be further studied. The novel triplet ECE (TECE) method has provided a new approach for track amplification, firing tree production, fractal tree generation, etc. Also the novel dyed ECE track (DYECET) method enables one to study in more detail the structure of tracks, cracks, fractals, etc. Large-scale radon monitoring indoors and outdoors, large-scale neutron personnel dosimetry, low level radionuclide determination in environmental samples, autoradiography, beam profile determination, etc. are considered some successful applications. In this paper, the above were explored with emphasis on recent discoveries and inventions at NRPD in AEOI.  相似文献

Any detector is composed of an enormous number of sensitive microscopic volumes (SMV) mainly in the state “NO” (Katz 1970. Unified Track Theory. In: Seventh International Colloquium on Corpuscular Photography and Visual Solid Detectors. Barcelona, pp. 1–29.). Irradiation evokes some spatial distribution of SMV in the state “Yes”. It can be described by the many-hit model of the SMV response (Ditlov, 1980. Theory of spatial calculation of primary action of d-electrons in track detectors with account of multiple scattering. In: Francois, H., et al. (Eds.), Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors. Pergamon Press, Oxford, pp. 131–141.). It appears that the process of etching can be described by its own many-hit model too, when the etching molecule attacks SMV in the state “Yes”. As a first our step of research, only the bulk rate Vb was considered.  相似文献

An improved procedure for etching and analysis of alpha tracks induced in LR-115 detectors is proposed with the advantages of simplicity and its relatively low cost. A new type of detector holder was designed to etch and rinse efficiently up to 100 detectors. We develop a simple and reliable methodology with a semiautomatic track count using a Nikon digital camera coupled to a PC and employing software “SCION” freely available on the Internet. Track images are binarized prior the application of software “SCION” so that original track shapes are not distorted, space resolution is improved and track counting has low dependence on focus and illumination level. High discrimination for tracks is achieved when marks and rips perturb the detector surface. An image generator of nuclear tracks is included to study the effect of track overlapping effect on counting.  相似文献

Six stacks of nuclear track detectors were exposed in December 1994 to 207Pb82+ ions of 158 A GeV at the CERN-SPS. Each stack was made of CR39 sheets placed after a target. The CR39 was manufactured by the Intercast Europe Co. of Parma (Italy). The exposures were carried out at normal incidence to an average density of 400 ions/cm2. The main purpose of the exposures was the calibration of the CR39 nuclear track detector used in a large area detector to search for magnetic monopoles (experiment MACRO at the Gran Sasso Laboratory). We compare the response of CR39 of different production batches in different etching conditions. The results indicate no relevant aging effect for the CR39 made more than 5 years ago. The first result of a “long period” investigation of possible fading effects for the CR39 is also presented.  相似文献

Image analyser systems used for evaluating solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) were compared in order to establish minimum hardware and software requirements and methodology necessary in different fields of radiation dosimetry. For the purpose, CR-39 detectors (TASL, Bristol, U.K.) were irradiated with different (n, α) and (n,p) converters in a reference Pu-Be neutron field, in an underground laboratory with high radon concentration and by different α sources at the Atomic Energy Research Institute (AERI) in Budapest, Hungary. 6 sets of etched and pre-evaluated detectors and the 7th one without etching were distributed among the 14 laboratories from 11 countries. The participants measured the different track parameters and statistically evaluated the results, to determine the performance of their system. The statistical analysis of results showed high deviations from the mean values in many cases. As the conclusion of the intercomparison recommendations were given to fulfill those requirements necessary to construct an appropriate image analyser system for evaluating SSNTDs.  相似文献

A new technique for the determination of Th and U content in solids was proposed. The ratio of U and Th fission reaction yields for “infinite thick” metall layers was measured in the γ-ray energy range from 7 MeV to 23.5 MeV. For this purpose metallic sheets of U and Th placed next to polyethyleneterephtalate track detectors were irradiated at the Microtron MT-25. The method is based on the fact that the ratio NU/NTh differs sufficiently from 1.7 to 3.3 depending on the γ-ray energy. Irradiating an Uranium ethalon and samples with γ-rays of (20–23) MeV (NU/NTh = 2.2) and 15–17) MeV (NU/NTh = 3.3) one can determine simultaneously both U and Th content in samples. The comparison of the results of measuring of U and Th content in different samples obtained by the proposed and the known methods is presented.  相似文献

Space radiation dosimetry measurements have been made on board the Space Shuttle STS-65 in the Second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2). In these measurements, three kinds of detectors were used; one is a newly developed active detector telescope called “Real-time Radiation Monitoring Device (RRMD)” utilizing silicon semi-conductor detectors and others are conventional detectors of thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) and CR-39 plastic track detectors. Using the RRMD detector, the first attempt of real-time monitoring of space radiation has been achieved successfully for a continuous period of 251.3 h, giving the temporal variations of LET distribution, particle count rates, and rates of absorbed dose and dose equivalent. The RRMD results indicate that a clear enhancement of the number of trapped particles is seen at the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) without clear enhancement of dose equivalent, while some daily periodic enhancements of dose equivalent due to high LET particles are seen at the lower geomagnetic cutoff regions for galactic cosmic ray particles (GCRs). Therefore, the main contribution to dose equivalent is seen to be due to GCRs in this low altitude mission (300 km). Also, the dose equivalent rates obtained by TLDs and CR-39 ranged from 146.9 to 165.2 μSv/day and the average quality factors from 1.45 to 1.57 depending on the locations and directions of detectors inside the Space-lab at this highly protected orbit for space radiation with a small inclination (28.5°) and a low altitude (300 km). The LET distributions obtained by two different detectors, RRMD and CR-39, are in good agreement in the region of 15–200 keV/mm and difference of these distributions in the regions of LET < 15 keV/mm and LET > 200 keV/mm can be explained by considering characteristics of CR-39 etched track formation especially for the low LET tracks.  相似文献

The β decay of 96Ag (Z=47,N=49) was investigated by measuring positrons, X rays as well as β-delayed protons and γ rays. The γ radiation was studied by means of germanium detectors and a NaI total-absorption spectrometer. Two β-decaying isomers in 96Ag were established with half-lives of 4.40(6) and 6.9(6) s and tentative spin–parity assignments of (8+) and (2+), respectively. For both isomers, the intensities of β transitions to low-lying levels of 96Pd (Z=46,N=50) and β-delayed proton decays to levels in 95Rh (Z=45,N=50) were measured. Several new 96Pd levels were firmly established. The level energies, their γ decays and the Gamow–Teller decay of 96Ag are compared to shell-model predictions. A new low-lying level in 95Rh was found at 680 keV excitation energy. Through a comparison with low-lying states of N=50 isotones, this level is interpreted as the first excited 7/2+ state built on the proton 9/2+ ground state. The assignments of further excited states in 95Rh are discussed.  相似文献

A shape selection method corresponding to an energy discrimination was used to eliminate unwanted events disturbing evaluation of CR-39 detectors in detecting tracks induced by particles both of perpendicular and oblique incidence. The angular dependence of the response was examined, detecting fast neutrons from 252Cf with shape selection technique at various angles and distances. Also, the CR-39 track detectors with the 252Cf source were exposed to high γ-intensity of a 60Co irradiation facility in the range 0.1 to 4.5 kGy, similar to the exposures inside spent fuel assemblies. Using the two functions the lower limit of burnup could be determined by the method.  相似文献

Systematic measurements of swelling of CR-39 nuclear track detector (NTD) due to irradiation with fission fragments and alpha particles over a wide range of fluences from 252Cf are presented here. Precisely designed and optimized exposure and chemical etching experiments were employed to unfold the structure of radiation induced surface damage. Delays in the startup of the chemical etching of latent tracks in low radiation fluence detectors are measured and are found to contain important information about structure of the surface damage. Simple atomic scale pictures of radiation induced surface damage and its chemical etching are developed using measurements of radiation induced swelling of CR-39 detectors and nuclear track parameters. The computer code SRIM2010 was utilized for the calculations of basic features of latent tracks of fission fragments and alpha particles in CR-39. Another computer code TRACK_VISION was used to compute parameters of etched tracks. Computations and experimental findings in the paper coherently compose a realistic picture of radiation damage.  相似文献

Surface sensitive spectroscopies were employed to investigate the surface modifications which occur on SiO2 during actual reactive ion and plasma etching in CF4 and CF4/O2 plasmas. Photoemission and electron energy loss spectroscopies were used to characterize the composition and bonding in the modified layer. Core level photoemission measurements indicated a reaction layer 10–15 Å thick with a mean composition of SiOF2. Photoemission and EELS studies of the valence bands identified several features due to Si---F bonding. Comparisons with the SiO2 valence bands and implications for bonding are discussed. Electron energy loss spectra were also used to determine if ion induced “defect” species formed during reactive etching persist in the reaction layer. A comparison of reactive ion etching samples with those exposed to plasma etching conditions (negligible ion bombardment) indicated that the ion bombarded surfaces exhibit a reduced level of fluorination during steady state etching. Low energy ion scattering was used to determine the composition of the outermost atomic layer. These measurements indicated a fluorine terminated surface with virtually no remaining surface oxygen.  相似文献

The etching conditions of an indigenously prepared thin film of pentaerythritol tetrakis(allyl carbonate) (PETAC) were standardised for the use as a nuclear track detector. The optimum etching times in 6?N NaOH at 70°C for the appearance of fission and alpha tracks recorded in this detector from a 252Cf solid source were found to be 30 min and 1.50?h, respectively. The experimentally determined values for the bulk and track-etch rates for this detector in 6?N NaOH at 70°C were found to be 1.7?±?0.1 and 88.4?±?10.7?µm/h, respectively. From these results, the important track etching properties such as the critical angle of etching, the sensitivity and the fission track registration efficiency were calculated and compared with the commercially available detectors. The activation energy value for bulk etching calculated by applying Arrhenius equation to the bulk etch rates of the detector determined at different etching temperatures was found to be 0.86?±?0.02?eV. This compares very well with the value of about 1.0?eV reported for most commonly used track detectors. The effects of gamma irradiation on this new detector in the dose range of 200–1000?kGy have also been studied using bulk etch rate technique. The activation energy values for bulk etching calculated from bulk etch rates measurements at different temperatures were found to decrease with the increase in gamma dose indicating scission of the detector due to gamma irradiation. The optical band gap of this detector was also determined using UV–visible spectrometry and the value was found to be 4.37?±?0.05?eV.  相似文献

Diopside, a natural silicate mineral of formula CaMgSi2O6, has been investigated concerning its thermoluminescence (TL) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) properties. Glow curves and TL vs. γ-dose were obtained irradiating natural samples to additional dose varying from 50 to 10,000 Gy. Except for a 410 °C peak found in the Al-doped artificial diopside, all the other peaks grow linearly with radiation dose, but saturate beyond 1 kGy. To investigate high-temperature effect before irradiation, measurements of TL intensity in samples annealed at 500–900 °C and then irradiated to 1 kGy γ-dose were carried out. Also the TL emission spectrum has been obtained. To compare with natural diopside, a synthetic pure polycrystal was produced and further those doped with iron, aluminum and manganese were also produced.  相似文献

An extended Cu-target was irradiated with 22 and 44 GeV carbon ions. The target was in contact with a (CH2)n-block for the moderation of secondary neutrons. Small holes in the moderator were filled with either lanthanium salts or uranium oxide. The reaction 139La (n,γ) 140La was studied via the decay of 140La (40 h), and the reaction 238U (n, γ) 239U 239Np was studied via the decay of 239Np (2.3 d). In addition, a variety of solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) were used. Results will be presented. The yields for the formation of (n, γ) products agree essentially with other experiments on extended targets carried out at the Synchrophasotron LHE, JINR (Dubna). To a first approximation, the breeding rate of (n, γ) products, as well as the specific track density, seen with several SSNTDs, doubles when the carbon energy is increased from 22 to 44 GeV. If, however, results at 44 GeV are compared in detail to those at 22 GeV, we observe an excess of (37 ± 9) % in the experimentally observed 239Np-breeding rate over theoretical estimations. Experiments using solid state nuclear track detectors are giving similar results. We also observed in the past such excess in the yield of other secondary particles in relativistic heavy ion interactions above a total energy of approximately 35–40 GeV.  相似文献

Three kinds of polymeric track detectors have been examined by ESR spectroscopy following heavy ion or energetic electron bombardment: (1) Typical nuclear track detectors: makrofol, kapton, terphane; (2) Polymers whose radiolysis under γ-rays or electron beams is well established: PMMA, PE, PP; (3) Polymers in which etchable tracks have not so far been observed e.g. teflon. The influence on the various ESR spectra of the radiation dose, of annealing or chemical etching treatments leads us to suggest that existence of heavy ion latent tracks might be correlated with the formation of “carbon-like” radicals such as produced in polymer pyrolysis.  相似文献

The BRADOS 1–3 projects were organised by the Russian Space Agency (RZA) between 2001 and 2003. The aim was to study the contribution of the primary galactic cosmic rays and of the secondary particles to the dose received by the crew of the International Space Station (ISS). Several laboratories participated in these experiments. Two different stacks (constructed by the team of the Atomic Energy Research Institute, AERI, Budapest, Hungary) composed of solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) were exposed inside the Service Module at different locations. The calibrations were made at the CERN high-energy neutron reference field named CERF (Geneva, Swiss). Applying a multiple track etching technique (2–20 h etching time) and a sophisticated image analyser, the secondary neutron dose was deduced. The composition of stacks, the evaluation methods and the results will be presented here or referenced to previous papers.  相似文献
