Streaming current, surface conductivity and swelling data of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) thin films are analyzed on the basis of the theory for diffuse soft interfaces (J.F.L. Duval, R. Zimmermann, A. L. Cordeiro, N. Rein, C. Werner, Langmuir 25 (2009) 10691). Focus is put on ways to unravel the electroosmotic and migration contributions of the measured surface conductivity, which is crucial for appropriate electrokinetic analysis of films carrying high densities of dissociable groups. Results demonstrate that the osmotically-driven swelling of the PAA films with increasing pH is accompanied by an increase in diffuseness for the interphasial polymer segment density distribution. This heterogeneity is particularly marked at low ionic strength with a non-monotonous dependence of the streaming current on pH and the presence of a maximum at pH~6.5. The analysis of the PEI films evidences heterogeneous swelling with lowering pH, i.e. upon protonation of the amine groups. The characteristic decay length in the interphasial PEI segment density distribution is found to be nearly independent of the pH, which is in line with the moderate swelling determined by ellipsometry. A critical discussion is given on the strengths and limitations of electrokinetics/surface conductivity for quantifying the coupled electrohydrodynamic and structural properties of moderately to highly swollen polyelectrolyte thin films.  相似文献

Charging and swelling of cellulose in aqueous environments are of highest interest with respect to the performance of cellulose based products and applications. To unravel the interplay between ionization and structural features of the biopolymer hydrogel we compared non-crosslinked and crosslinked cellulose thin films based on a determination of the Donnan potential [S.S. Dukhin, R. Zimmermann, C. Werner, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 274 (2004) 309] from microslit electrokinetic (streaming potential/streaming current) experiments and layer thicknesses from ellipsometry in aqueous electrolyte solutions. The pH dependence of the Donnan potential, reflecting the ionization of carboxylic acid groups within the cellulose films, was found to be significantly different from the related trend of the streaming current which reflects the characteristics of the topmost surface of the layers: While carboxylic acid groups on the surface of the films dissociate as isolated functionalities, the electrostatic interactions of ionized groups within the cellulose layers cause an incomplete dissociation (pK shift) of the carboxylic acid and a layer expansion (swelling) in the alkaline pH range. The system was found to restrict its volume charge density even after structural restrictions (crosslinking) of the layer and at lower ionic strength of the solutions through a further decrease of the degree of dissociation of the carboxylic acid functions. These findings were attributed to the local accumulation of the carboxylic acid groups caused by preferential oxidation of the amorphous regions of the cellulose and to the ordered water structure within the layer.  相似文献

During the past decade, much attention has been devoted to the use of electrokinetic phenomena for addressing both charging mechanism and structure of multi-responsive soft polymeric layers whose thickness may range from few tens of nanometers to several microns. In particular, major progress was achieved in the quantitative reconstruction of streaming current data collected over a wide range of physico-chemical conditions using recent theories for electrohydrodynamics of soft diffuse planar interphases. In this article, we review the basics of the methodology adopted for deciphering the mechanisms governing the charging of electric double layers at soft planar films in connection with their structure that may vary according to pH, salt concentration or temperature depending on the responsive character of the system. It is demonstrated how the combination of streaming current, surface conductivity and swelling measurements allows for a comprehensive understanding of the interrelated protolytic, hydrodynamic, electrostatic and structural properties of polymer layers. We discuss the benefits and limits of the approach on the basis of studies carried out on uncharged, moderately charged and highly charged soft polymeric films supported by hard charged carriers. In a final part, the basic processes governing the peculiar electrokinetic properties of soft planar polyelectrolyte multilayers under lateral flow conditions are described.  相似文献

Multilayer films were assembled from a copolymer containing both weakly and strongly charged pendant groups, poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSMA), deposited in alternation with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). The strongly charged groups (styrene sulfonate, SS) are expected to form electrostatic linkages (to enhance film stability), while the weakly charged groups (maleic acid, MA) can alter multilayer film properties because they are responsive to external pH changes. In this study, we varied several assembly conditions such as pH, SS/MA ratio in PSSMA, and the ionic strength of the polyelectrolyte solutions. The multilayer films were also treated by immersion into pH 2 and 11 solutions after assembly. Quartz crystal microgravimetry and UV-visible spectrophotometry showed that the thickness of PSSMA/PAH multilayers decreases with increasing assembly pH regardless of whether salt was present in the polyelectrolyte solutions. When no salt was added, the multilayers are thinner, smoother, and grow less regularly. Atomic force microscopy images indicate that the presence of salt in polyelectrolyte solutions results in rougher surface morphologies, and this effect is especially significant in multilayers assembled at pH 2 and pH 11. When both polyelectrolytes are adsorbed at conditions where they are highly charged, salt was necessary to promote regular multilayer growth. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies show that the carboxylic acids in the multilayers are essentially ionized when assembled from different pHs in 0.5 M sodium chloride solutions, whereas some carboxylic acids remain protonated in the multilayers assembled from solutions with no added salt. This resulted in different pH stability regimes when the multilayers were exposed to different pH solutions, post assembly.  相似文献

We report a comprehensive formalism for the electrokinetics (streaming current, I(str)) at soft multilayered polyelectrolyte films. These assemblies generally consist of a succession of permeable diffuse layers that differ in charge density, thickness, and hydrodynamic softness. The model, which extends one that we recently reported for the electrokinetics of monolayered soft thin films (Langmuir 2010, 26, 18169-18181), is valid without any restriction in the number and thickness of layers, or in the degree of dissociation and density of ionizable groups they carry. It further covers the limiting cases of hard and free draining films and correctly compares to semianalytical expressions derived for I(str) under conditions where the Debye-Hu?ckel approximation applies. The flexibility of the theory is illustrated by simulations of I(str) for a two-layer assembly of cationic and anionic polymers over a large range of pH values and electrolyte concentrations. On this basis, it is shown that the point of zero streaming current (PZSC) of soft multilayered interphases, defined by the pH value where I(str) = 0, generally depends on the concentration of the (indifferent) electrolyte. The magnitude and direction of the shift in PZSC with varying salinity are intrinsically governed by the dissymmetry in protolytic characteristics and density of dissociable groups within each layer constituting the film, together with the respective film thickness and hydrodynamic softness. The fundamental effects covered by the theory are illustrated by streaming current measurements performed on two practically relevant systems, a polyelectrolyte bilayer prepared from poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and a polymer-cushioned (PEI) bilayer lipid membrane.  相似文献

Layer-by-layer deposition of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) and chitosan (CHI) was used to create polyelectrolyte multilayers on ellipsoidal beta-FeOOH particles at low ionic strength. Using electro-optics, we investigated the formation of films in dependence on the polyelectrolyte charge density by controlling pH of the dipping solutions. We found out a linear growth of the CMC/CHI films when they are constructed from highly charged CHI (at pH 4.0) and weakly charged NaCMC (at pH 4.0 and 5.5). The hydrodynamic thickness of the film constructed at pH 4.0/4.0 is unusually large for a linearly growing film (ca. 220 nm after deposition of 8 bilayers), but it strongly decreases (ca. 4 times) with increasing ionization of NaCMC (at pH 5.5). In both cases, the multilayer buildup proceeded through a series of adsorption-desorption steps. This was explained by a partial loss of CHI from the film surface on exposure to the solution of longer NaCMC molecules. The irregular film growth correlated quite well with the variations in the electrical polarizability of the polymer-coated particles. This correlation enabled us to conclude that the adsorption of both polymers occurs only on the film surface, with no diffusion in and out of the film bulk during deposition of each CMC/CHI bilayer.  相似文献

Surfaces carrying hydrophilic polymer brushes were prepared from poly(styrene)-poly(acrylic acid) and poly(styrene)-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers, respectively, using a Langmuir-Blodgett technique and employing poly(styrene)-coated planar glass as substrates. The electrical properties of these surfaces in aqueous electrolyte were analyzed as a function of pH and KCl concentration using streaming potential/streaming current measurements. From these data, both the zeta potential and the surface conductivity could be obtained. The poly(acrylic acid) brushes are charged due to the dissociation of carboxylic acid groups and give theoretical surface potentials of -160 mV at full dissociation in 10(-)(3) M solutions. The surface conductivity of these brushes is enormous under these conditions, accounting for more than 93% of the total measured surface conductivity. However, the mobility of the ions within the brush was estimated from the density of the carboxylic acid groups and the surface conductivity data to be only about 14% of that of free ions. The poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) brushes effectively screen the charge of the underlying substrate, giving a very low zeta potential except when the ionic strength is very low. From the data, a hydrodynamic layer thickness of the PEO brushes could be estimated which is in good agreement with independent experiments (neutron reflectivity) and theoretical estimates. The surface conductivity in this system was slightly lower than that of the polystyren substrate. This also indicates that no significant amount of preferentially, i.e., nonelectrostatically attracted, ions taken up in the brush.  相似文献

The interaction between cellulose surfaces in aqueous solution has been measured using colloidal probe microscopy. Cellulose thin films with varying charge through carboxyl group substitution were used in this study with the surface forces fit to DLVO theory. It was found that the surface potential increased, as expected, with increasing carboxyl substitution. Furthermore, for a given degree of substitution, the surface potential increased as a function of increasing pH. At low pH, the surface forces interaction were attractive and could be fit to the non-retarded Hamaker equation using a constant of 3 x 10(-21) J. At pH greater than 5, the force interactions were monotonically repulsive, regardless of the ionic strength of the solution for all charge densities of the cellulose thin films. The adsorption of polyDADMAC to these charged cellulose films was also investigated using the quartz crystal microbalance. It was found that for the low charge film, a low surface excess of PDADMAC was sensed and that the adsorbed conformation was essentially flat. However for the higher charged cellulose film, a spontaneous de-swelling was observed resulting in no possibility of quantitatively determining the sensed mass using QCM.  相似文献

The aza-Michael addition and the Mannich condensation occur in thin films deposited on ambient surfaces. The reagents for both C-N bond formation reactions were transferred onto the surface by drop-casting using a micropipette. The surface reactions were found to be much more efficient than the corresponding bulk solution-phase reactions performed on the same scale in the same acetonitrile solvent. The increase in rate of product formation in the thin film is attributed to solvent evaporation in the open air which results in reagent concentration and produces rate acceleration similar to that seen in evaporating droplets in desorption electrospray ionization. This thin film procedure has potential for the rapid synthesis of reaction products on a small scale, as well as allowing rapid derivatization of analytes to produce forms that are easily ionized by electrospray ionization. Analysis of the derivatized sample directly from the reaction surface through the use of desorption electrospray ionization is also demonstrated.  相似文献

Multilayer thin films were prepared by the layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition method using a rhenium-containing hyperbranched polymer and poly[2-(3-thienyl)ethoxy-4-butylsulfonate] (PTEBS). The radii of gyration of the hyperbranched polymer in solutions with different salt concentrations were measured by laser light scattering. A significant decrease in molecular size was observed when sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate was used as the electrolyte. The conditions of preparing the multilayer thin films by LBL deposition were studied. The growth of the multilayer films was monitored by absorption spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry, and the surface morphologies of the resulting films were studied by atomic force microscopy. When the pH of a PTEBS solution was kept at 6 and in the presence of salt, polymer films with maximum thickness were obtained. The multilayer films were also fabricated into photovoltaic cells and their photocurrent responses were measured upon irradiation with simulated air mass (AM) 1.5 solar light. The open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, fill factor, and power conversion efficiency of the devices were 1.2 V, 27.1 mu A cm(-2), 0.19, and 6.1x10(-3) %, respectively. The high open-circuit voltage was attributed to the difference in the HOMO level of the PTEBS donor and the LUMO level of the hyperbranched polymer acceptor. A plot of incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency versus wavelength also suggests that the PTEBS/hyperbranched polymer junction is involved in the photosensitization process, in which a maximum was observed at approximately 420 nm. The relatively high capacitance, determined from the measured photocurrent rise and decay profiles, can be attributed to the presence of large counter anions in the polymer film.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of dark conductivity and photoconductivity of cobalt(II) etioporphyrin, Co(II)EP, thin films in the presence of various gases was performed. The major contribution to conductivity of both types was made by oxygen molecules adsorbed on the surface of the gas sensitive layer. The concentration of adsorbed oxygen molecules increased under light action on the surface of films, which increased film conductivity at the given temperature. Light action could be used to reach maximum sensor sensitivity of Co(II)EP films toward ammonia at room temperature.  相似文献

The buildup of poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) and poly(L-lysine) (PLL) multilayers on beta-FeOOH colloidal particles was investigated by means of electro-optics and electrophoresis. The films were built at different (acidic) pH in the absence of salt. We found that the thickness of the film grows linearly when the fully charged PLL (at pH 5.5) is combined with almost fully charged PGA (at pH 6.5), with a thickness of about 2 nm per single layer. When the fully charged PLL is combined with weakly charged PGA (at pH 4.5), the film thickness increases exponentially with the number of deposited layers. The thickness of the exponentially growing film increases to 300 nm after deposition of 16 layers. The exponential film growth is attributed to the ability of the PLL to diffuse "in" and "out" of the film bulk at each deposition step. The variation in the electrical polarizability of the film-coated particles was also monitored as a function of the number of adsorbed layers. The result reveals that the PLL chains, which can diffuse into the film bulk, have no measurable contribution to the electro-optical effect of the films terminated with PLL. It is only due to the polarization of counterions of the PLL adsorbed on the film surface.  相似文献

Multilayer films were assembled from a strong polyelectrolyte (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC) and a copolymer containing both strongly charged styrene sulfonate moieties and weakly charged maleic acid moieties (poly(4‐styrenesulfonic acid‐co‐maleic acid), PSSMA). Growth of PSSMA/PDADMAC multilayers was linear, as characterized by UV‐vis spectroscopy and quartz crystal microgravimetry. The influence of both the pH of the PSSMA adsorption solutions and the ratio of SS:MA in the PSSMA on multilayer properties was investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that the ionization of carboxylic acid groups in PSSMA/PDADMAC multilayers did not vary significantly with changes in the PSSMA assembly pH. However, the multilayers showed different thicknesses, surface morphologies, and stability to post‐assembly pH treatment. We also demonstrate that PSSMA/PDADMAC multilayers are significantly more stable than PSSMA/PAH multilayers after post‐assembly pH treatment (i.e. the films remain intact when exposed to pH extremes). In addition, the surface morphology of two films (PSSMA 1:1 assembled at pH 5.8, post‐treated at pH 2 and PSSMA 3:1 assembled at pH 5.8, post‐treated at pH 11) changed significantly when the films were exposed to solutions of different pH and, in the former case, this change in film morphology was reversible. The porous morphology after treatment at pH 2 could be reversed to give a significantly smoother film after subsequent exposure to water for 24 h. Our results demonstrate that by the rational choice of the assembly pH of PSSMA, stable and pH‐responsive films can be obtained via the sequential assembly of PSSMA and PDADMAC. These films have potential in controlled release applications where film stability and pH‐responsive behavior are essential. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the development of a solid polymer electrolyte film from hydrogen bonding layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly that outperforms previously reported LBL assembled films and approaches battery integration capability. Films were fabricated by alternating deposition of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) layers from aqueous solutions. Film quality benefits from increasing PEO molecular weight even into the 10(6) range due to the intrinsically low PEO/PAA cross-link density. Assembly is disrupted at pH near the PAA ionization onset, and a potential mechanism for modulating PEO:PAA ratio within assembled films by manipulating pH is discussed. Ionic conductivity of 5 x 10(-5) S/cm is achievable after short exposure to 100% relative humidity (RH) for plasticization. Adding free ions by exposing PEO/ PAA films to lithium salt solutions enhanced conductivity to greater than 10(-5) S/cm at only 52% RH and tentatively greater than 10(-4) S/cm at 100% RH. The excellent stability of PEO/PAA films even when exposed to 1.0 M salt solutions led to an exploration of LBL assembly with added electrolyte present in the adsorption step. Fortuitously, the modulation of PEO/PAA assembly by ionic strength is analogous to that of electrostatic LBL assembly and can be attributed to electrolyte interactions with PEO and PAA. Dry ionic conductivity was enhanced in films assembled in the presence of salt as compared to films that were merely exposed to salt after assembly, implying different morphologies. These results reveal clear directions for the evolution of these promising solid polymer electrolytes into elements appropriate for electrochemical power storage and generation applications.  相似文献

The stability of thin water films on silicon substrates coated with cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes was investigated by the thin film pressure balance technique. Depending on the surface charge of the substrate, the water films are either stable (on negatively charged wafers) or rupture rapidly (on positively charged wafers). It is supposed that this behavior is due to a negative surface charge of the free water surface. The underlying assumption that the films' stability is due to electrostatic interactions is supported by measurements of the disjoining pressure on silicon wafers with a native oxide layer, which indicates a decrease of the film thickness, and thus decreasing repulsive interaction between the two film interfaces, with increasing ionic strength.  相似文献

A general method has been developed to determine the ionization constants of polymer thin films based on the stimuli-responsiveness of the polymer. Robust polymer films were fabricated on silicon wafers and gold slides using perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA) as the coupling agent. The ionization constants were measured by a number of techniques including ellipsometry, dynamic contact angle goniometry, and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi). Using poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) as the model system, P4VP thin films were fabricated and the ionization constants of the films were measured taking advantage of the pH responsive property of the polymer. The pK(a) determined by ellipsometry, ~4.0, reflects the swelling of the polymer film in response to pH. The pK(a) value calculated from the dynamic contact angle measurements, ~5.0, relies on the change in hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the films as the polymer undergoes protonation/deprotonation. The pK(a) value measured by SPRi, ~4.9, monitors in situ the change of refractive index of the polymer thin film as it swells upon protonation. This was the first example where SPRi was used to measure the ionization constants of polymers.  相似文献

Two combinations of sodium poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) of different chain length and charge density are employed to construct multilayer films. The polyelectrolytes are assembled layer-by-layer on colloidal particles in the absence of salt. We have investigated the formation and electrical characteristics of the films by using electric light scattering technique. The results show that the film thickness is independent of the chain length when fully charged PAH (at pH 4.6) is combined with fully charged PSS. When the films are prepared with less charged PAH (at pH 6.7) and fully charged PSS, lower thickness is found for the film with shorter polymer chains. In all cases, the thickness increment realized on addition of the polymer with lower molar concentration is partially lost on exposure to the solution with higher concentration of the oppositely charged partner. When the film growth is regular (at equal molar concentrations of the fully charged polyelectrolytes), the ratio of PSS to PAH charge, estimated from the electro-optical effect values, exceeds 1. The electro-optical effect is also higher for the films ending with PSS when fully charged PSS is combined with less charged PAH (at pH 6.7). This reveals the key role of the charge in the last-adsorbed layer for the electro-optical behavior of the whole film.

Among the various semiconducting metal oxide materials, ZnO thin films are highly attractive in the development of materials area. In this paper, Al-doped ZnO thin films were prepared by sol–gel dipping and drawing technology and their composition, structure and optical–electrical properties were investigated. XRD results shows that the Al-doped ZnO thin film is of polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure, and the (002) face of the thin film has the strongest orientation at the annealing temperature of 550 °C. The surface resistance of Al-doped ZnO thin film firstly drops and then increases with the increase in annealing temperature. Al doping concentration is also an important factor for improving the conductivity of modified ZnO thin films, and the surface resistance has the tendency to drop at first and then to increase when the Al concentration is increasing. The surface resistance of modified ZnO thin films drops to the lowest point of 139 KΩ sq?1 when the Al concentration is 1.6 at% and the annealing temperature is 500 °C. The light transmission measurements show that the doping concentration has little influence on light transmittance. The transmittance at the visible region of films is all over 80 %, and the highest value is up to 91 %.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of film composition and thickness on the rate of pH-induced response of a copolymer film containing predominately polymethylene with randomly distributed carboxylic acid side groups (denoted as PM-CO2H). These responsive films are prepared directly onto a gold electrode surface by surface-catalyzed polymerization and subsequent hydrolysis. We measured electrochemical impedance at fixed frequency (100 Hz) to monitor the barrier properties of the polymer film during a step change in pH. At a 1-3% molar acid content, the copolymer films exhibit a 2 order of magnitude change in impedance at 100 Hz when the contacting solution pH changes from 11 to 4 (or 4 to 11). For all films, the rate of protonation is slower than that of ionization, consistent with a more gradual transfer of protons through an increasingly hydrophobic film at the outermost nanometers during the protonation step. Increased acid content within the film accelerates both the rate of protonation and ionization. Thinner films (50 nm) with the same acid content show faster response rate in both directions, since water and ions have a shorter transfer path. A large and reversible pH response was obtained for all films studied, but selection of appropriate film composition and thickness can greatly influence the rate of response.  相似文献
