Surface chemistry can become pronounced in determining the optical properties of colloidal metal nanoparticles as the nanoparticles become so small (diameters <20 nm) that the surface atoms, which can undergo chemical interactions with the environment, represent a significant fraction of the total number of atoms although this effect is often ignored. For instance, formation of chemical bonds between surface atoms of small metal nanoparticles and capping molecules that help stabilize the nanoparticles can reduce the density of conduction band electrons in the surface layer of metal atoms. This reduced electron density consequently influences the frequency-dependent dielectric constant of the metal atoms in the surface layer and, for sufficiently high surface to volume ratios, the overall surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption spectrum. The important role of surface chemistry is highlighted here by carefully analyzing the classical Mie theory and a multi-layer model is presented to produce more accurate predictions by considering the chemically reduced density of conduction band electrons in the outer shell of metal atoms in nanoparticles. Calculated absorption spectra of small Ag nanoparticles quantitatively agree with the experimental results for our monodispersed Ag nanoparticles synthesized via a well-defined chemical reduction process, revealing an exceptional size-dependence of absorption peak positions: the peaks first blue-shift followed by a turnover and a dramatic red-shift as the particle size decreases. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between surface chemistry and optical properties is beneficial to exploit new applications of small colloidal metal nanoparticles, such as colorimetric sensing, electrochromic devices, and surface enhanced spectroscopies.  相似文献

Cu deposition on the surface of spherical SiO2 nanoparticles was studied to achieve the hybrid structure of Cu-SiO2 nanocomposite. SiO2 nanoparticles served as seeds for continuous Cu metal deposition. The chemical structure and morphology were studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The antibacterial properties of the Cu-SiO2 nanocomposite were examined with disk diffusion assays. The homogeneously formed Cu nanoparticles on the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles without aggregation of Cu nanoparticles showed excellent antibacterial ability.  相似文献

Metal nanoparticles can be used as building blocks for the formation of nanostructured materials. For the design of materials with specific (optical) properties, several approaches can be followed, even when starting from the very same basic units. In this article, a survey is provided of the optical properties of noble metal nanoparticles, specifically gold, silver, and their combinations, prepared in solution through colloid chemical methods. The optical properties are shown to be mainly influenced by the surface plasmon resonance of conduction electrons, the frequency of which is not only determined by the nature of the metal but also by a number of other parameters, such as particle size and shape, the presence of a capping shell on the particle surface, or the dielectric properties of the surrounding medium. Recent results showing how these various parameters affect the optical properties are reviewed. The results highlight the high degree of control that can now be achieved through colloid chemical synthesis.  相似文献

Chemical sensing and imaging with metallic nanorods   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In this Feature Article, we examine recent advances in chemical analyte detection and optical imaging applications using gold and silver nanoparticles, with a primary focus on our own work. Noble metal nanoparticles have exciting physical and chemical properties that are entirely different from the bulk. For chemical sensing and imaging, the optical properties of metallic nanoparticles provide a wide range of opportunities, all of which ultimately arise from the collective oscillations of conduction band electrons ("plasmons") in response to external electromagnetic radiation. Nanorods have multiple plasmon bands compared to nanospheres. We identify four optical sensing and imaging modalities for metallic nanoparticles: (1) aggregation-dependent shifts in plasmon frequency; (2) local refractive index-dependent shifts in plasmon frequency; (3) inelastic (surface-enhanced Raman) light scattering; and (4) elastic (Rayleigh) light scattering. The surface chemistry of the nanoparticles must be tunable to create chemical specificity, and is a key requirement for successful sensing and imaging platforms.  相似文献

A novel method of fabrication of silica-based sol-gel films and glasses containing small semiconductor particles was developed. A series of films and glasses with nanoparticles of copper chalcogenides (CuS, Cu2Se, CuInS2) and metal particles (Cu) were fabricated through the chemical transformation of precursors incorporated into a sol-gel derived matrix. The properties of the nanoparticles studied by means of XRD, XPS, TEM and optical spectroscopy are provided both by size effects and the chemical nature of surface states and can be controlled at different steps of chemical treatment.  相似文献

Electrical properties of contacts formed between conducting polymers and noble metal nanoparticles have been examined using current-sensing atomic force microscopy (CS-AFM). Contacts formed between electrochemically prepared pi-conjugated polymer films such as polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MeT), as well as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and noble metal nanoparticles including platinum (Pt), gold (Au), and silver (Ag) have been examined. The Pt nanoparticles were electrochemically deposited on a pre-coated PPy film surface by reducing a platinum precursor (PtCl62-) at a constant potential. Both current and scanning electron microscopic images of the film showed the presence of Pt islands. The Au and Ag nanoparticles were dispersed on the P3MeT and PEDOT film surfaces simply by dipping the polymer films into colloid solutions containing Au or Ag particles for specified periods (5 to approximately 10 min). The deposition of Au or Ag particles resulted from either their physical adsorption or chemical bonding between particles and the polymer surface depending on the polymer. When compared with PPy, P3MeT and PEDOT showed a stronger binding to Au or Ag nanoparticles when dipped in their colloidal solutions for the same period. This indicates that Au and Ag particles are predominantly linked with the sulfur atoms via chemical bonding. Of the two, PEDOT was more conductive at the sites where the particles are connected to the polymer. It appears that PEDOT has better aligned sulfur atoms on the surface and is strongly bonded to Au and Ag nanoparticles due to their strong affinity to gold and silver. The current-voltage curves obtained at the metal islands demonstrate that the contacts between these metal islands and polymers are ohmic.  相似文献

The ligand substitution reaction, Pd L(3,2,1)-edge and S K-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), XAFS simulations, and valence-band and core-level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to systematically study the surface chemical and electronic properties of wet-chemically prepared Pd nanoparticles of varied size, molecular capping, and metal composition. It was found that the replacement of weakly interacting capping molecules (amine and tetra-alkylphosphonium bromide) with strongly binding thiols caused a considerable change in the surface bonding of Pd nanoparticles. However, the Pd d-electron counts (number of d electrons) remained almost unchanged before and after ligand substitution, which is unexpected since Pd atoms normally lose electrons to the more electronegative S atoms. XAFS results and simulations provided useful insights into the surface structural characteristics of Pd nanoparticles and satisfactorily accounted for the unexpected d-electron behavior involved in the ligand substitution process. XPS valence and core-level spectra further revealed a size-dependent d-band narrowing and presented complementary information to XAFS about the surface electronic properties of Pd atoms. The small weakly bound Pd nanoparticles seem inevitably to have a net d-electron depletion due to the influence of the surface effect (chemical adsorption by oxygen), which is more significant than the d-electron enriching nanosize effect. However, it was demonstrated that by forming Pd-Ag alloy nanoparticles, a net increase of the Pd d-electron counts can be realized. Therefore, it is illustrated that by manipulating the surface, size, and alloying effects, the electronic properties of Pd nanoparticles can be possibly tuned.  相似文献

Size reduction of metal nanoparticles increases the exposure of metal surfaces significantly, favoring heterogeneous chemistry at the surface of the nanoparticles. The optical properties of metal nanoparticles, such as light absorption, also exhibit a strong dependence on their size. It is expected that there will be strong coupling of light absorption and surface chemistry when the metal nanoparticles are small enough. For instance, metal nanoparticles with sizes in the range of 2–10 nm exhibit both surface plasmon resonances, which can efficiently produce high-energy hot electrons near the surface of the nanoparticles under light illumination, and the Coulomb blockade effect, which favors electron transfer from the metal nanoparticles to the surface adsorbates. The synergy of efficient hot electron generation and electron transfer on the surface of small metal nanoparticles leads to double-faced effects: (i) surface (adsorption) chemistry influences optical absorption in the metal nanoparticles, and (ii) optical absorption in the metal nanoparticles promotes (or inhibits) surface adsorption and heterogeneous chemistry. This review article focuses on the discussion of typical quantum phenomena in metal nanoparticles of 2–10 nm in size, which are referred to as “quantum-sized metal nanoparticles”. Both theoretical and experimental examples and results are summarized to highlight the strong correlations between the optical absorption and surface chemistry for quantum-sized metal nanoparticles of various compositions. A comprehensive understanding of these correlations may shed light on achieving high-efficiency photocatalysis and photonics.

Recently, there has been significant interest in the synthesis and potential applications of semiconductor nanotubes (NTs). In this context, many efforts have been invested in developing new routes to control and engineer their surface chemistry. We report herein on a simple route to differentially and selectively functionalize the inner and outer surfaces of silicon nanotubes (SiNTs) with organic molecular layers containing different functional groups and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity chemical nature, via covalent binding, to give nanotubular structures with dual chemical properties. Significantly, our unique synthetic approach can be further extended to directly form hollow crystalline nanotubular structures with their inner/outer surfaces independently and selectively altered chemically. Additionally, SiNTs inner and/or outer walls can be selectively decorated with metal nanoparticles. Both inner and outer walls can be individually and separately modified with the same metal nanoparticles, with different metal NPs in the inside and outside walls or with a combination of metal NPs decoration and molecular layers, if so required. Furthermore, the dually modified nanotubes were then exploited as phase extraction nanocarriers to demonstrate their potential in future chemical and biological separation, extraction, and filtering applications.  相似文献

A promising approach to control palladium nanoparticle sizes by application of silane modified silicas was suggested. The combination of reductive properties of silicon hydride groups and hydrophobic properties of alkylsilyl groups which act as agglomeration limiters for metal nanoparticles gives an opportunity to synthesize uniformly distributed particles with a specified size. Silicas modified with triethoxysilane (TES) and diisopropylchlorosilane (DIPCS), as well as, the combination of hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and triethoxysilane were applied for formation of such bifunctional matrices. Properties of the silane-modified silica samples and changes occurred during the formation of palladium nanoparticles were studied by IR spectroscopy. Thermal stability of surface chemical compounds was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA); low-temperature nitrogen adsorption was used to study structural properties of the applied materials. With the use of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) the dependence of palladium nanoparticle size on the nature of support surface layer was found.  相似文献

As nanoparticles enjoy increasingly widespread use in commercial applications, the potential for unintentional exposure has become much more likely during any given day. Researchers in the field of nanotoxicity are working to determine the physicochemical nanoparticle properties that lead to toxicity in an effort to establish safe design rules. This work explores the effects of noble metal nanoparticle exposure in murine chromaffin cells, focusing on examining the effects of size and surface functionality (coating) in silver and gold, respectively. Carbon-fibre microelectrode amperometry was utilized to examine the effect of exposure on exocytosis function, at the single cell level, and provided new insights into the compromised functions of cells. Silver nanoparticles of varied size, between 15 and 60 nm diameter, were exposed to cells and found to alter the release kinetics of exocytosis for those cells exposed to the smallest examined size. Effects of gold were examined after modification with two commonly used 'bio-friendly' polymers, either heparin or poly (ethylene glycol), and gold nanoparticles were found to induce altered cellular adhesion or the number of chemical messenger molecules released, respectively. These results support the body of work suggesting that noble metal nanoparticles perturb exocytosis, typically altering the number of molecules and kinetics of release, and supports a direct disruption of the vesicle matrix by the nanoparticle. Overall, it is clear that various nanoparticle physicochemical properties, including size and surface coating, do modulate changes in cellular communication via exocytosis.  相似文献

FT-Raman and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy were applied in the vibrational characterization and study of the adsorption and acidity behaviour of the highly fluorescent anthraquinone red pigment carminic acid (CA) on Ag nanoparticles prepared by chemical reduction with citrate and hydroxylamine. The SERS spectra were obtained at several pHs and excitation wavelengths and on Ag nanoparticles prepared by two different methods: chemical reduction with citrate and hydroxylamine in order to find the best experimental conditions for the vibrational study and detection of CA. Three CA forms can be identified on the metal surface, corresponding to the mono-, di- and tri-anionic CA species, whose relative intensity in the SERS spectra can markedly vary depending on the chemical properties of the offered surface and the excitation wavelength. This study could be very helpful for researchers trying to apply surface-enhanced techniques in the detection of small amounts of anthraquinone molecules, both under a cultural heritage and under a biological point of view.  相似文献

d-alpha-Tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) has great potential in pharmacology and nanotechnology. The present work investigated the molecular behaviour of TPGS at the air-water interface, its effect on a model bio-membrane composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) lipid monolayer, and the interaction between the TPGS coated nanoparticles with the lipid model membrane. Paclitaxel loaded polymeric nanoparticles with TPGS as surfactant stabiliser were fabricated and characterised in terms of their drug incorporation capability and release kinetics. The result showed that TPGS exhibited notable effect on the surface properties of air-water interface as well as the lipid monolayer. The inter-particle force and the interaction between nanoparticles and lipid monolayer varied with the surface substance. The penetration of various nanoparticles into the model membrane indicated that an optimal balance between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity on nanoparticle surface is needed to achieve an effective cellular uptake of nanoparticles. The results also demonstrate that the drug incorporation capability and the release characteristics of drug-loaded nanoparticles can be influenced by surfactant stabiliser.  相似文献

The activity, selectivity, and long-term stability of catalyst nanoparticles can be enhanced by shape modulation. Such shaped catalytic nanocrystals have well-defined surface crystalline structures on which the cleavage and recombination of chemical bonds can be rationally controlled. Metal and metal oxide nanocrystals have been synthesized in various shapes using wet chemistry techniques such as reducing metal precursors in the presence of the surface-capping agents. The surface-capping agents should be removed prior to the catalytic chemical reaction, which necessitates clean catalytically active surface. The removal process should be performed very carefully because this removal often causes shape deformation. A few examples in which the surface-capping agents contribute positively to the chemical reactions have been reported. The examples described in this review include shaped metal, metal composite, and metal oxide nanocrystals that show enhanced catalytic activity, selectivity, and long-term stability for various gas-phase, liquid-phase, or electrocatalytic reactions. Although most of the studies using these shaped nanocrystals for catalytic applications have focused on low-index surfaces, nanocrystals with high-index facets and their catalytic applications have recently been reported. By bridging surface studies with nanoparticle catalysts using shape modulation, catalysts with improved properties can be rationally designed.  相似文献

Composite materials consisting of nanoscale gold particles and protective polymer shells were designed and tested as catalysts in various chemical reactions. Initially, the systematic incorporation of multiple gold nanoparticles into a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) particle was achieved by an in situ method under light irradiation. The degree of gold nanoparticle loading, along with the structural and morphological properties, was examined as a function of the amount of initial gold ions and reducing agent. As these gold nanoparticles were physically-embedded within the polymer particle in the absence of strong interfacial interactions between the gold nanoparticles and polymer matrix, the readily-accessible surface of the gold nanoparticles with a highly increased stability allowed for their use as recyclable catalysts in oxidation, reduction, and coupling reactions. Overall, the ability to integrate catalytically-active metal nanoparticles within polymer particles in situ allows for designing novel composite materials for multi-purpose catalytic systems.  相似文献

The intense colors of noble metal nanoparticles have inspired artists and fascinated scientists for hundreds of years. In this review, we describe refractive index sensing platforms based on the tunability of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of arrays of silver nanoparticles and of single nanoparticles. Specifically, the color associated with single nanoparticles and surface-confined nanoparticle arrays will be shown to be tunable and useful as platforms for chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the LSPR nanosensor will be compared to traditional, flat surface, propagating surface plasmon resonance sensors.  相似文献
