Excitonic surface polaritons are excited resonantly in ZnTe utilizing attenuated total reflection (ATR). Lineshape analyses of ATR and normal-incidence-reflection spectra yield the eigenenergies of excitonic surface and bulk polaritons. Comparison of ATR and reflection spectra with luminescence spectra invalidates a recently published attribution of luminescence maxima to excitonic surface polaritons.  相似文献

We discuss the nature of a new type of surface polariton which occurs on anisotropic media, involving a photon coupled to a surface virtual excitation. Dispersion curves are calculated for α-quartz, where both real excitation type and virtual excitation type surface polaritons are predicted. The dispersion curves for virtual excitation surface polaritons are found to remain at small wavevector, and the endpoints of the dispersion curves terminate on the bulk polariton dispersion curves in the two media. The virtual excitation surface polaritons which occur on gyromagnetic and gyrodielectric media are also noted.  相似文献

Electromagnetic wave propagation through waveguide structures consisting of anisotropic dielectric layers, assisted by surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) is theoretically studied. Dispersion relations corresponding to both short range and long range coupled SPP modes in metal/insulator/metal (MIM) and insulator/metal/insulator (IMI) structures, taking into consideration the anisotropy of the insulator, are derived and numerically solved. The dispersion has a prominent dependence on the anisotropy of the dielectric environment. The dependence of propagation on the misalignments of the optic axes of the insulator has also been investigated.  相似文献

The dispersion relation and the theory of nonlinear excitation of surface exciton polaritons are presented for a geometry consisting of a prism, and airgap and a spatially dispersive medium. We compare DeMartini et al.'s experimental results for the Cl-surface exciton polaritons in ZnO with the predictions of two models for the ABC (additional boundary conditions), i.e. Pex = 0 and ?Pex?z = 0 and found reasonable agreement for the second case only.  相似文献

The exciton-polariton luminescence spectra of the ZnTe cystals are investigated in the region of the ground (n= 1) exciton state. In addition to emission of the both branches of bulk polaritons, luminescence of surface polaritons is first revealed. Dispersionless surface polaritons at twist boundaries of transparent uniaxial crystals are investigated. Exact analytical expressions for the central angles of the sectors of propagation of the surface polaritons are derived for arbitrary degrees of crystalline anisotropy η = ε ? 1. We present a theory of the photonic band structure of three-dimensional arrays of quantum dots (QDs). A system of Maxwell’s and material equations is solved and the dispersion equation for exciton-polaritons is derived making allowance for a nonlocal dielectric response of quasi-zero-dimensional excitons confined in QDs. The reflection and transmission coefficients are calculated for a single plane, a pair of planes and a stack of equidistant planes of QDs. Two different approaches are proposed to perform a calculation. One of them is based on recurrent equations relating the reflection coefficients for N + 1 and N planes, while in the other approach the Bloch solutions for an infinite QD lattice are used.  相似文献

The sectors of propagation directions of dispersionless polaritons localized at the optically uniaxial crystal-optically isotropic medium interface are determined. The region of possible orientations of the crystal surface containing these sectors is revealed. The boundaries of the sector of possible propagation directions are analytically described as functions of the crystal surface orientation with respect to the optical axis of the crystal. Consideration is given to the optimum ratios of permittivities at which the width of the propagation sectors appears to be maximum. It is found that the boundaries of the sectors of polariton propagation along different surfaces change drastically in the limit of small dielectric anisotropy of the crystal.  相似文献

We have investigated the nature of polaritons which propagate on the surface of semi-infinite anisotropic dielectric and magnetic media and find that the surface polaritons are regular surface waves [i.e., the penetration constant α (ω) is real] only for special orientations of the wave vector k and of the normal to the surface n relative to the principal axes. In the case of biaxial crystals, regular surface polaritons occur when k and/or n is along a principal axis of the dielectric tensor ε(ω) for dielectric media [or the magnetic permeability tensor μ(ω) for magnetic media]. When k and n are both directed along principal axes, the surface polaritons are TM with E in the saggital plane for dielectric media. One finds that surface polaritons which are coupled photon-virtual surface dipole excitation modes can exist on “surface active” anisotropic media in addition to the familiar coupled photon-real surface dipole excitation modes. When neither k nor n are along principal axes, the surface polaritons that occur are, with the exception of special orientations, “generalized” surface waves [i.e., α(ω) is complex]. The Poynting vectors of the propagating surface polaritons are always in the plane of the surface but not, in general, along k. These results, which hold for uniaxial crystals, are also applicable to gyromagnetic media and to gyrodielectric media. This theory is also applicable to surface polaritons which propagate along the interface between two media, one or both of which is anisotropic, and with one or the other serving as the “surface active” medium.  相似文献

The “superfluid” properties of layered metallic crystals comprising conducting sheets of electrons and holes are predicted. The excitonic pairing in such anisotropic system manifests itself in alternating diamagnetic response to small longitudinal fields and, at sufficiently high fields (H| and E⊥), in the oscillating Josephson currents flowing in the direction perpendicular to the sheets.  相似文献

作为束缚于表面或界面的电磁波与极性元激发的耦合模量子,表面极化激元是克服衍射极限的核心物理.在紫外、可见以及近红外波段,表面等离子极化激元展现出了亚波长特性,具有高分辨成像等应用,并发展成为"表面等离子极化激元亚波长光学"学科;在中红外波段,表面声子极化激元发挥着同样的作用.太赫兹波段曾是人类认识的空白区域,近三十年来得以高速发展,其战略意义重大.具有克服衍射极限能力的太赫兹表面极化激元同样是小型化与集成化太赫兹器件,以及太赫兹超高分辨成像的重要物理基础.近几年来,对以石墨烯为代表的二维材料的研究突飞猛进,诞生了"石墨烯表面等离子极化激元亚波长光学"这门学科,并贡献于太赫兹领域.本文对可在太赫兹波段工作的人工超构材料、掺杂半导体、二维电子气、二维材料、拓扑绝缘体等结构材料的表面极化激元进行了较为全面的总结与介绍,为研制克服衍射极限的太赫兹集成光子学器件提供可资借鉴的物理基础.  相似文献

报道了纳米ZnO薄膜激子光致发光(PL)与温度的关系。首先利用低压金属有机化学气相沉积(LPMOCVD)技术生长ZnS薄膜,然后将ZnS薄膜在氧气中于800℃下热氧化2h获得纳米ZnO薄膜。X射线衍射(XRD)结果表明,纳米ZnO薄膜具有六角纤锌矿多晶结构且具有择优(002)取向。室温下观察到一束强的紫外(326eV)光致发光(PL)和很弱的深能级(DL)发射。根据激子峰的半高宽(FWHM)与温度的关系,确定了激子纵向光学声子(LO)的耦合强度(ГLO)。  相似文献

An exact solution of Maxwell's equations is found, corresponding to ans-polarized nonlinear surface polarition, at the planar interface between two dielectric media, one of which is optically unaxial and is characterized by a diagonal dielectric tensor whose elements depend on the amplitude of the electric field according to 11=22=0()+a() (|E 1|2+|E 2|2), 33=(). We have investigated the characteristics of exciton polaritons in a ZnO microcavity with HfO2/SiO2 distributed Bragg reflectors. The results of the angle-resolved reflectance spectra were analyzed by calculating the cavity polariton dispersions with a phenomenological Hamiltonian for the coupling between the cavity photon and three kinds of excitons labeled A, B, and C peculiar to ZnO. The vacuum-Rabi-splitting energy is estimated to be ∼80 meV. The reflectance dips originating from the cavity polaritons shift to lower energy side with an increase in temperature. We discuss the temperature dependence of the cavity-polariton energies of the ZnO microcavity on the basis of the phenomenological Hamiltonian taking account of the temperature dependence of the exciton energies with Varshni’s law.  相似文献
