We have measured the dynamics of solvation of a triplet state probe, quinoxaline, in the glass-forming ionic liquid dibutylammonium formate near its glass transition temperature Tg=153 K. The Stokes-shift correlation function displays a relaxation time dispersion of considerable magnitude and the optical line width changes systematically along the solvation coordinate. The solvent dynamics in the viscous regime is compared with the rotational behavior of the solute and with the dielectric relaxation of the ionic liquid. Among the different quantities derived from the dielectric experiments, the relaxation of the macroscopic electric field, i.e., the modulus Mt, matches best the solvent response Ct regarding time scale and stretching exponent. Many other properties are reminiscent of the behavior of polar molecular liquids which lack the ionic character.  相似文献

Optically heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect experiments are applied to study the orientational dynamics of the supercooled ionic organic liquids N-propyl-3-methylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (PMPIm) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tosylate (EMImTOS). The orientational dynamics are complex with relaxation involving several power law decays followed by a final exponential decay. A mode coupling theory (MCT) schematic model, the Sj?gren model, was able to reproduce the PMPIm data very successfully over a wide range of times from 1 ps to hundreds of ns for all temperatures studied. Over the temperature range from room temperature down to the critical temperature Tc of 231 K, the OHD-OKE signal of PMPIm is characterized by the intermediate power law t(-1.00+/-0.04) at short times, a von Schweidler power law t(-0.51+/-0.03) at intermediate times, and a highly temperature-dependent exponential (alpha relaxation) at long times. This form of the decay is identical to the form observed previously for a large number of organic van der Waals liquids. MCT analysis indicates that the theory can explain the experimental data very well for a range of temperatures above Tc, but as might be expected, there are some deviations from the theoretical modeling at temperatures close to Tc. For EMImTOS, the orientational dynamics were studied on the ps time scale in the deeply supercooled region near its glass transition temperature. The orientational relaxation of EMImTOS clearly displays the feature associated with the boson peak at approximately 2 ps, which is the first time domain evidence of the boson peak in ionic organic liquids. Overall, all the dynamical features observed earlier for organic van der Waals liquids using the same experimental technique are also observed for organic ionic liquids.  相似文献

A series of newly designed ascorbic acid based room temperature ionic liquids were successfully used to prepare quasi-spherical and anisotropic gold nanostructures in an aqueous medium at ambient temperature. The synthesis of these room temperature ionic liquids involves, first, the preparation of a 1-alkyl (such as methyl, ethyl, butyl, hexyl, octyl, and decyl) derivative of 3-methylimidazolium hydroxide followed by the neutralization of the derivatised product with ascorbic acid. These ionic liquids show significantly better thermal stability and their glass transition temperature (Tg) decreases with increasing alkyl chain length. The ascorbate counter anion of these ionic liquids acts as a reducing agent for HAuCl4 to produce metallic gold and the alkylated imidazolium counter cation acts as a capping/shape-directing agent. It has been found that the nature of the ionic liquids and the mole ratio of ionic liquid to HAuCl4 has a significant effect on the morphology of the formed gold nanostructures. If an equimolar mixture of ionic liquid and HAuCl4 is used, predominantly anisotropic gold nanostructures are formed and by varying the alkyl chain length attached to imidazolium cation of the ionic liquids, various particle morphologies can formed, such as quasispherical, raspberry-like, flakes or dendritic. A probable formation mechanism for such anisotropic gold nanostructures has been proposed, which is based on the results of some control experiments.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of novel imidazolium cation and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide anion (TFSI?)‐based ionic liquid (IL) model compounds and their corresponding polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) with various tethering groups. Ethylene oxide repeating units were attached as tethering groups to an imidazolium cation to optimize the glass transition temperatures (Tg) and ionic conductivities of the PILs. The novel PILs exhibit excellent conductivity values of around 8 × 10?4 S/cm at room temperature. The thermophysical and electrochemical properties of ILs, including thermal transition, ionic conductivity, and rheological behavior, were characterized to investigate the effect of tethering groups. We conclude that the length of poly(ethylene oxide) tethering group has a tremendous effect on both physical property and electrochemical behavior and that charge carrier density is dominant in defining ionic conductivity with free ILs, whereas ion mobility plays a more important role after polymerization. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigate ion dynamics under pressure in the ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis[oxalate]borate (BMP-BOB) by conductivity relaxation measurements in the temperature range 123-300 K and varying pressures from 0.1 MPa up to 0.5 GPa. We report on the influence of pressure on the relaxation times and on the spectral shape of the conductivity relaxation process. We also analyze the pressure dependence of the glass transition temperature and find that the dynamic response under pressure in this ionic liquid shows remarkable similarities to nonionic glass formers. The main relaxation process shows temperature-pressure superposition while a secondary relaxation process, very weakly depending on pressure, is observed. The spectral shape of the main relaxation broadens with increasing pressure or decreasing temperature, but is found to be the same when the relaxation time is the same, independently of the particular pressure and temperature values.  相似文献

Dielectric relaxation dynamics of secondary amides is explored in their supercooled state near the glass transition temperature Tg by investigating N-ethylacetamide and its mixtures with N-methylformamide. All the samples are found to exhibit giant dielectric permittivities, reaching over 500 in N-methylformamide-rich mixtures around Tg. For both the neat and binary systems, the predominant relaxation peak is of the Debye-type throughout the viscous regime, which is an unexpected feature for a glass former with intermediate fragility. The present results combined with the earlier reported high-temperature data reveal that the dielectric strength delta epsilon(D) of the Debye relaxation extrapolates to zero at frequencies of 10(10)-10(11) Hz, which is about two orders of magnitude lower than the phonon frequency limit typical of the structural relaxation. This Debye process is remarkably similar to the dielectric behavior of many monohydroxy alcohols, which implies a common nature of purely exponential relaxation dynamics in these liquids. Based on the dielectric properties, we conclude that the Debye relaxation in the secondary amides is not a direct signature of the primary or alpha-relaxation, the latter being obscured at low temperatures due to the relatively low permittivity and close spectral proximity to the Debye peak. As in the case of monohydroxy alcohols, dielectric polarization and structure fluctuate on different time scales in secondary amides. The Kirkwood-Fr?hlich correlation factors for Debye-type liquids are also discussed.  相似文献

A series of 11 new protic ionic liquids with fluorous anions (FPILs) have been identified and their self-assembled nanostructure, thermal phase transitions and physicochemical properties were investigated. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that fluorocarbon domains have been reported in PILs. The FPILs were prepared from a range of hydrocarbon alkyl and heterocyclic amine cations in combination with the perfluorinated anions heptafluorobutyrate and pentadecafluorooctanoate. The nanostructure of the FPILs was established by using small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS). In the liquid state many of the FPILs showed an intermediate range order, or self-assembled nanostructure, resulting from segregation of the polar and nonpolar hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon domains of the ionic liquid. In addition, the physicochemical properties of the FPILs were determined including the melting point (T(m)), glass transition (T(g)), devitrification temperature (T(c)), thermal stability and the density ρ, viscosity η, air/liquid surface tension γ(LV), refractive index n(D), and ionic conductivity κ. The FPILs were mostly solids at room temperature, however two examples 2-pyrrolidinonium heptafluorobutyrate (PyrroBF) and pyrrolidinium heptafluorobutyrate (PyrrBF) were liquids at room temperature and all of the FPILs melted below 80 °C. Four of the FPILs exhibited a glass transition. The two liquids at room temperature, PyrroBF and PyrrBF, had a similar density, surface tension and refractive index but their viscosity and ionic conductivity were very different due to dissimilar self-assembled nanostructure.  相似文献

Among the outstanding problems in the theory of supercooled liquids are the reasons for the rapid increase in their viscosity and relaxation times as the temperature is lowered towards the glass transition temperature Tg, the nonexponential time dependence of the relaxation, and the possible connection between these two properties. The ferromagnetic Potts model on a square latice is a simple system that is found to exhibit these properties. Our calculations show that in this system the connection between them is associated with the dependence on temperature and time of the average environment of the sites. Some of the consequences of this for understanding the behavior of supercooled liquids are discussed.  相似文献

The electrical conductivities of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids and of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids with different anions were determined in the temperature range between 123 and 393 K on the basis of dielectric measurements in the frequency range from 1 to 10(7) Hz. Most of the ionic liquids form a glass and the conductivity values obey the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The glass transition temperatures are increasing with increasing length of the alkyl chain. The fragility is weakly dependent on the alkyl chain length but is highly sensitive to the structure of the anion.  相似文献

The complex dynamics of a room‐temperature ionic liquid, 1‐n‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6]), is studied using equilibrium classical molecular dynamics simulations in the temperature range of 250–450 K. The activation energies for the self‐diffusion of ions are around 30–34 kJ mol?1, with that of the anion a little higher than that for the cation. The electrical conductivity of the liquid is calculated and good agreement with experiments is obtained. Structural relaxation is studied through the decay of coherent (total density–density correlation) and incoherent (self part of density–density correlation) intermediate scattering functions over a range of temperatures and wave vectors relevant to the system. The relaxation data are used to identify and characterize two processes, α and β. The dependence of the two relaxation times on temperature and wave vector is obtained. The dynamical heterogeneity of the ions determined through the non‐Gaussian parameter indicates the motion of the cation to be more heterogeneous than that of the anion. The faster ones among the cations are coordinated to faster anions, while slower cations are surrounded predominantly by slower anions. Thus, the dynamical heterogeneity in this ionic liquid is shown to have structural signatures.  相似文献

Orientation molecular dynamics were investigated in a series of "defect-free" oligofluorenes by depolarized dynamic light scattering and dynamic NMR spectroscopy. Typical liquid crystalline pretransitional dynamics were observed upon cooling the isotropic phase to the liquid crystalline phase with strong increase of the scattered intensity and slowing down of the characteristic time of the probed collective relaxation. This is well accounted for by the Landau-de Gennes theory, however, with a strong temperature dependence of the viscosity coefficient, reflecting the proximity of the glass transition. For the trimer the two transitions almost overlap and the molecular orientation coincide with the alpha-relaxation associated with the glass transition. The NMR measurements confirm that the time scale of the dynamics is completely governed by the glass process, yet the geometry of the motion is anisotropic, yielding order parameters ranging from 0.15 to 0.25 for the long axis in the liquid crystalline phase. The glass transition is therefore geometrically restricted with poorly ordered mesophase which is consistent with the weak transverse phonons in the light scattering experiment down to Tg+20 K.  相似文献

Intrinsically luminescent room‐temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) can be prepared by combining a luminescent anion (more common) or cation with appropriate counter ions, rendering new luminescent soft materials. These RTILs are still new, and many of their photochemical properties are not well known. A novel intrinsic luminescent RTIL based on the 8‐anilinonaphthalene‐1‐sulfonate ([ANS]) anion combined with the trihexyltetradecylphosphonium ([P6,6,6,14]) cation was prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Detailed photophysical studies highlight the influence of the ionic liquid environment on the ANS fluorescence, which together with rheological and 1H NMR experiments illustrate the effects of both the viscosity and electrostatic interactions between the ions. This material is liquid at room temperature and possesses a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 230.4 K. The fluorescence is not highly sensitive to factors such as temperature, but owing to its high viscosity, dynamic Stokes shift measurements reveal very slow components for the IL relaxation.  相似文献

We have performed the heat capacity, neutron diffraction, and neutron quasielastic scattering measurements of an ionic liquid 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C8mimCl). The heat capacity data revealed that C8mimCl exhibits a glass transition with a large heat capacity jump at T(g) = 214 K, which is lower than T(g) of C4mimCl with a shorter alkyl-chain. In the neutron diffraction measurement for a deuterated analogue, d-C8mimCl, the peaks associated with the inter-domain, inter-ionic, and inter-alkyl-chain correlations appeared at (3, 11, and 14) nm(-1), respectively. The temperature dependence of these peaks indicates that the packing of the alkyl-chains becomes more compact and the domains become more vivid and larger as decreasing temperature. The quasielastic neutron scattering measurements using neutron spin echo and time-of-flight type instruments demonstrated that C8mimCl has faster relaxations probably owing to the alkyl-group and a slower relaxation owing to the ions. The latter relaxation, which is related to the glass transition, is of non-exponential as in the α relaxation of glass-forming molecular liquids. The relaxation of domains could not be observed in the present experiment but should have relaxation times longer than 100 ns. This is the first report to clarify temperature dependence of the hierarchical structure and relaxations simultaneously for a typical ionic liquid.  相似文献

In this study, the structures and dynamics of ionic liquids of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([AMIM][Cl]) and 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM][Cl]) were studied by dynamic light scattering with polarized and depolarized geometries in the temperature range from 300 to 400 K. The temperature range covered supercooled and liquid states for [BMIM][Cl] and covered the liquid state for [AMIM][Cl]. The results show that for these ionic liquids at all chosen temperatures only one ultraslow relaxation is observed in the polarized component of dynamic light scattering, however, the ultraslow relaxation is not observed in the depolarized component. The ultraslow relaxation exhibited several typical features of the "cluster" mode generally found in glass-forming liquids and polymer melts, such as diffusive, strongly scattering-vector-dependent, and nearly exponential characters, which thus corresponded to long-range density fluctuations. The physical origin for long-range density fluctuations was the existence of heterogeneities with large characteristic length scales in these ionic liquids. It was further considered that molecules of these ionic liquids not only tended to aggregate to form dynamic clusters but also possibly formed dynamic networks in the supercooled state and the heterogeneities could exist even at temperatures higher than the melting points.  相似文献

Light scattering and dielectric spectroscopy measurements were performed on the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) [C4mim][NTf2] in a broad temperature and frequency range. Ionic conductivity was used to estimate self-diffusion of ions, while light scattering was used to study structural relaxation. We demonstrate that the ionic diffusion decouples from the structural relaxation process as the temperature of the sample decreases toward T(g). The strength of the decoupling appears to be significantly lower than that expected for a supercooled liquid of similar fragility. The structural relaxation process in the RTIL follows well the high-temperature mode coupling theory (MCT) scenario. Using the MCT analysis we estimated the dynamic crossover temperature in [C4mim][NTf2] to be T(c) ~ 225 ± 5 K. However, our analysis reveals no sign of the dynamic crossover in the ionic diffusion process.  相似文献

Brillouin light scattering spectra from transverse and longitudinal acoustic waves in liquid and supercooled 3-methylpentane have been collected from room temperature down to 80 K, just above the glass transition. Spectra at different wave vectors have been obtained using 532 nm and 266 nm excitation. We found evidence of a shear relaxation with a characteristic time of 100 s at the glass transition which only partly accounts for the relaxation observed in the propagation and attenuation of the longitudinal modes. The inclusion of a relaxing bulk viscosity contribution with a relaxation time of the order of 10(2) ns at the glass transition is found to adequately reproduce the experimental data including transient grating data at a much lower frequency. A consistent picture of relaxed shear and bulk moduli as a function of temperature is derived. These two quantities are found to be related by a linear relation suggesting that a Cauchy-like relation holds also above the glass transition.  相似文献

We report on the synthesis, characterisation, and physical and tribological properties of halogen-free ionic liquids based on various chelated orthoborate anions with different phosphonium cations, both without halogen atoms in their structure. Important physical properties of the ILs including glass transition temperatures, density, viscosity and ionic conductivity were measured and are reported here. All of these new halogen-free orthoborate ionic liquids (hf-BILs) are hydrophobic and hydrolytically stable liquids at room temperature. As lubricants, these hf-BILs exhibit considerably better antiwear and friction reducing properties under boundary lubrication conditions for steel-aluminium contacts as compared with fully formulated (15W-50 grade) engine oil. Being halogen free these hf-BILs offer a more environmentally benign alternative to ILs being currently developed for lubricant applications.  相似文献

In some polymers, in addition to the usual structural alpha relaxation, a slower alpha' relaxation is observed with a non-Arrhenius temperature dependence. In order to understand better the molecular origin of this alpha' relaxation in poly(methylphenylsiloxane) (PMPS) we have studied, for the first time, the pressure dependence of its relaxation time, together with the usual temperature dependence, by means of dynamic light scattering (DLS). For the same material the alpha relaxation was also studied by means of DLS and dielectric spectroscopy (DS) in broad temperature and pressure ranges. We find that the temperature dependence of both alpha and alpha' relaxation times, at all pressures studied, can be described by a double Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) law. The pressure dependence of the characteristic temperatures Tg (glass transition temperature) and T0 (Vogel temperature) as well as the activation volumes for both alpha and alpha' processes are very similar, indicating, that both relaxation processes originate from similar local molecular dynamics. Additionally, for both alpha and alpha' relaxations the combined temperature and pressure dependences of the relaxation times can be described using a parameter Gamma=rhon/T with the same value of the exponent n.  相似文献

We have investigated the ultrafast molecular dynamics of five pyrrolidinium cation room temperature ionic liquids using femtosecond optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy. The ionic liquids studied are N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide P14+/NTf2-), N-methoxyethyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide P1EOE+/NTf2-), N-ethoxyethyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide P1EOE+/NTf2-), N-ethoxyethyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bromide P1EOE+, and N-ethoxyethyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium dicyanoamide P1EOE+/DCA-). For comparing dynamics among the five ionic liquids, we categorize the ionic liquids into two groups. One group of liquids comprises the three pyrrolidinium cations P14+, P1EOM+, and P1EOE+ paired with the NTf2- anion. The other group of liquids consists of the P1EOE+ cation paired with each of the three anions NTf2-, Br-, and DCA-. The overdamped relaxation for time scales longer than 2 ps has been fit by a triexponential function for each of the five pyrrolidinium ionic liquids. The fast ( approximately 2 ps) and intermediate (approximately 20 ps) relaxation time constants vary little among these five ionic liquids. However, the slow relaxation time constant correlates with the viscosity. Thus, the Kerr spectra in the range from 0 to 750 cm(-1) are quite similar for the group of three pyrrolidinium ionic liquids paired with the NTf2- anion. The intermolecular vibrational line shapes between 0 and 150 cm(-1) are fit to a multimode Brownian oscillator model; adequate fits required at least three modes to be included in the line shape.  相似文献

Time-resolved phosphorescence spectra and anisotropy of quinoxaline were measured in an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIM-HFP), in its supercooled state near the glass-transition temperature. The solvation dynamics results are compared with the rotational motion of the probe and with the dielectric behavior of the neat ionic liquid. The dynamics in the viscous state are highly dispersive and show a super-Arrhenius temperature dependence, as typical for glass-forming materials. Combined with room-temperature results, solvation dynamics is observed to follow the structural relaxation times in terms of eta/T for more than 10 decades, from subnanoseconds at room temperature to seconds near the glass-transition temperature T(g). The dielectric modulus relaxation follows this trend only for temperatures T > 1.2T(g) and departs significantly from eta/T in the 1.1T(g) > T > T(g) range. This deviation is reminiscent of the enhanced translational diffusion or fractional Stokes-Einstein behavior observed in many fragile supercooled liquids. Because the electric field relaxation in BMIM-HFP includes dc conductivity, this correlation function involves translational motion and thus displays the effect of enhanced diffusivity. A microscopic model is required for rationalizing the decoupling of solvation dynamics from the longitudinal time scales and the limitation of this effect to the viscous regime with T < 1.2T(g).  相似文献
