This article covers precise syntheses of well‐defined chain‐end and in‐chain functionalized polymers, multi‐functionalized polymers with a definite number of functional groups, star‐branched and graft polymers by recently developed methodologies using specially designed 1,1‐diphenylethylene (DPE) derivatives. The DPE derivatives include various substituted DPE derivatives with functional groups and their derivatives, DPE‐functionalized DPE derivatives, and well‐defined DPE‐functionalized macromonomers. The synthetic utility and importance of these DPE derivatives are described via such polymer syntheses.  相似文献

A binary catalytic system, RuCl2(N‐heterocyclic carbene)(p‐cymene)/alkyne, was developed for improved molecular weight control in ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reactions of norbornene derivatives in organic and aqueous media. Monometallic ruthenium arene compounds were activated using aryl and aliphatic terminal alkynes to form highly active metathesis species. The effects of alkyne structure and concentration on the overall catalytic activity were systematically investigated. The catalytic activity of the metathesis active species can be tuned by varying alkyne substituents. Also, the initiation rate of the ROMP reaction can be tuned by increasing the alkyne‐to‐Ru ratio. ROMP polymers with a wide range of molecular weights (91–832 kDa) were isolated in organic media, whereas polymers with a molecular weight range of 110–280 kDa with average particle sizes of 150–250 nm were isolated in aqueous media. Today's olefin metathesis catalysts show high reactivity, selectivity, and functional group tolerance and allow the design of new syntheses of precisely functionalized polymers. Here the synthesis of a new end‐capping reagent is investigated allowing the introduction of a highly reactive activated ester end‐group at the polymer chain end as well as its prefunctionalization to directly introduce functional moieties. The versatility of this new end‐capping reagent is demonstrated by utilizing it to synthesize a so‐called termimer (a monomer with termination capabilities). Copolymerization of a norbornene derivative with the termimer leads to hyperbranched ring‐opening metathesis polymerization polymers as proven by gel permeation chromatography and MALDI‐ToF‐(matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight) mass spectrometry.

Low molecular weight linear poly(methyl acrylate), star and hyperbranched polymers were synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and end‐functionalized using radical addition reactions. By adding allyltri‐n‐butylstannane at the end of the polymerization of poly(methyl acrylate), the polymer was terminated by allyl groups. When at high conversions of the acrylate monomer, allyl alcohol or 1,2‐epoxy‐5‐hexene, monomers which are not polymerizable by ATRP, were added, alcohol and epoxy functionalities respectively were incorporated at the polymer chain end. Functionalization by radical addition reactions was demonstrated to be applicable to multi‐functional polymers such as hyperbranched and star polymers.  相似文献

End group activation of polymers prepared by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was accomplished by conversion of thiocarbonylthio end groups to thiols and subsequent reaction with excess of a bismaleimide. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was prepared by RAFT, and subsequent aminolysis led to sulfhydryl‐terminated polymers that reacted with an excess of 1,8‐bismaleimidodiethyleneglycol to yield maleimido‐terminated macromolecules. The maleimido end groups allowed near‐quantitative coupling with model low molecular weight thiols or dienes by Michael addition or Diels‐Alder reactions, respectively. Reaction of maleimide‐activated PNIPAM with another thiol‐terminated polymer proved an efficient means of preparing block copolymers by a modular coupling approach. Successful end group functionalization of the well‐defined polymers was confirmed by combination of UV–vis, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The general strategy proved to be versatile for the preparation of functional telechelics and modular block copolymers from RAFT‐generated (co)polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined AB3‐type miktoarm star‐shaped polymers with cholic acid (CA) core were fabricated with a combination of “click” chemistry and ring opening polymerization (ROP) methods. Firstly, azide end‐functional poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) polymers were prepared via controlled polymerization and chemical modification methods. Then, CA moieties containing three OH groups were introduced to these polymers as the end groups via Cu(I)‐catalyzed click reaction between azide end‐functional groups of the polymers ( mPEG‐N3 , PMMA‐N3 , PS‐N3 , and PCL‐N3 ) and ethynyl‐functional CA under ambient conditions, yielding CA end‐functional polymers ( mPEG‐Cholic , PMMA‐Cholic , PS‐Cholic , and PCL‐Cholic ). Finally, the obtained CA end‐capped polymers were employed as the macroinitiators in the ROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) yielding AB3‐type miktoarm star polymers ( mPEG‐Cholic‐PCL3 , PMMA‐Cholic‐PCL3 , and PS‐Cholic‐PCL3 ) and asymmetric star polymer [ Cholic‐(PCL)4 ]. The chemical structures of the obtained intermediates and polymers were confirmed via Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. Thermal decomposition behaviors and phase transitions were studied in detail using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Unique photodegradable polyamides have been prepared by solution polymerization of diphenyl α-truxillate or δ-truxinate with hexamethylene or nonamethylenediamine, followed by melt polymerization. Photochemical properties of resulted polyamides were studied spectroscopically and are discussed in terms of photoreversibility and monomeric derivatives for comparison. Solution viscosity of the polymer was decreased by irradiation with a high-pressure mercury lamp. The polymers from α-truxillic acid depolymerize by the action of monochromatic light of 224 mμ to give rise to cinnamyl groups faster than those from δ-truxinic acid. On the photodegradation of polyalkylene-δ-truxinamide, two types of scission of cyclobutane were found: symmetrical scission, giving rise to two cinnamyl groups, and a symmetrical scission, giving rise to one trans-stilbene and one fumaramide linkage. The intense absorption peak due to cinnamyl groups at 272 mμ of partially photodepolymerized films diminished by the action of 304 mμ light; this can be accounted for by the recombination of cinnamyl groups into cyclobutane ring and some unidentified crosslinking reactions. The photochemical behavior of cyclobutane in the polyamides studied proved to be consistent with that of monomeric derivatives reported previously. The study on thermal properties of the polymers by DTA and TGA revealed that this type of polyamide is quite stable as high as 350°C unless significant steric effects are involved.  相似文献

A versatile strategy for the preparation of end‐functional polymers and block copolymers by radical exchange reactions is described. For this purpose, first polystyrene with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl end group (PS‐TEMPO) is prepared by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP). In the subsequent step, these polymers are heated to 130 °C in the presence of independently prepared TEMPO derivatives bearing hydroxyl, azide and carboxylic acid functionalities, and polymers such as poly(ethylene glycol) (TEMPO‐PEG) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (TEMPO‐PCL). Due to the simultaneous radical generation and reversible termination of the polymer radical, TEMPO moiety on polystyrene is replaced to form the corresponding end‐functional polymers and block copolymers. The intermediates and final polymers are characterized by 1H NMR, UV, IR, and GPC measurements. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 2387–2395  相似文献

Water‐soluble and amphiphilic polymers are of great interest to industry and academia, as they can be used in applications such as biomaterials and drug delivery. Whilst ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is a fast and functional group tolerant methodology for the synthesis of a wide range of polymers, its full potential for the synthesis of water‐soluble polymers has yet to be realized. To address this, we report a general strategy for the synthesis of block copolymers in aqueous milieu using a commercially available ROMP catalyst and a macroinitiator approach. This allows for excellent control in the preparation of block copolymers in water. If the second monomer is chosen such that it forms a water‐insoluble polymer, polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) occurs and a variety of self‐assembled nano‐object morphologies can be accessed.  相似文献

The synthesis of three different poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomers with a norbornene and oxanorbornene end group is presented. The macromonomers were polymerized to comb‐polymers by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using Grubbs' Catalyst G3 to produce water soluble polymers with polydispersities between 1.04 and 1.30 and molecular weights between 14,000 and 50,000 g/mol. Characterization by static and dynamic light scattering reveals that the comb‐polymers with norbornene backbone are molecularly disperse in aqueous solution, while the oxanorbornene‐backbone polymers form small water‐soluble aggregates. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The bromine chain ends of well‐defined polystyrene ( = 2 700 g · mol−1, = 1.11) prepared using ATRP were successfully transformed into various functional end groups (ω‐hydroxy, ω‐carboxyl and ω‐methyl‐vinyl) by a two‐step pathway: (1) substitution of the bromine terminal atom by an azide function and (2) 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition of the terminal azide and functional alkynes (propargyl alcohol, propiolic acid and 2‐methyl‐1‐buten‐3‐yne). The “click” cycloaddition was catalyzed efficiently by the system copper bromide/4,4′‐di‐(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine. In all cases, 1H NMR spectra indicated quantitative transformation of the chain ends of polystyrene into the desired function.

A range of polynorbornenes (PNBs) with fused dipolar pendant groups at C‐5,6 positions was synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization catalyzed by a ruthenium carbene complex (Grubbs I). Photophysical studies, EFISH measurements, and atomic force microscopy images have been used to investigate the structures and morphology of these polymers. These results suggest that the polymers may adopt rigid rod‐like structures. The presence of the double bonds in PNBs appeared to be indispensable for the rigidity of the polymers. Interaction between unsaturated pendant groups may result in coherent alignment leading to a rod‐like structure.  相似文献

A series of cis-5-norbornene-endo-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride(NDCA,M1) derivatives(M2-M4) with different types of nonpolar substituted groups were synthesized and characterized by ~1H/~(13)C-NMR and mass spectrometry(MS). Ringopening metathesis polymerization(ROMP) of these monomers using the Grubbs third generation catalyst(G3) generated high molecular weight polymers with much improved solubility compared with the NDCA's homopolymer. It was found that the solubility of these polymers increased with increased substituent's steric hindrance. The living polymerization of NDCA derivative containing the bulkiest substituent(M4) catalyzed by G3 in tetrahydrofuran was confirmed by the kinetic studies with low polydispersity indices(PDI)( 1.30). By using sequential ROMP, well-defined diblock copolymers containing anhydride groups were synthesized.  相似文献

This article described the synthesis of cyclic poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) via ring‐closing metathesis (RCM), ring closing enyne metathesis (RCEM), and “click” reaction of different difunctional linear PCL. Linear PCL precursors were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone in bulk using 10‐undecen‐1‐ol or propargyl alcohol as the initiator, followed by reacting with corresponding acyl chloride containing vinyl or azido end group. The subsequent end‐to‐end intramolecular coupling reactions were performed under high dilution conditions. The successful transformation of linear PCL precursor to cyclic PCL was confirmed by Gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR, and Fourier transform infrared measurements. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block copolymers can be conveniently prepared via convergent syntheses, allowing each individual polymer block to be prepared via the polymerization technique that gives the best architectural control. The convergent “click‐chemistry” route presented here, gives access to amphiphilic diblock copolymers prepared from a ring opening metathesis polymer and polyethylene glycol. Because of the high functional group tolerance of ruthenium carbene initiators, highly functional ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) polymer blocks can be prepared. The described synthetic route allows the conjugation of these polymer blocks with other end‐functional polymers to give well‐defined and highly functional amphiphilic diblock copolymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Controlled preparation of brush polymers is important in the design of functional materials. In this study, poly(tert-butyl acrylate) macromonomers functionalized with norbornenyl end group(NB-PtBA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization in three different molecular weights, 2000(NB-PtBA-2k), 3000(NB-PtBA-3k), and 8000(NB-PtBA-8k). Additionally, brush polymers with PtBA as side chains were synthesized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization(ROMP). Kinetic studies on ROMP of NB-PtBA showed that there was a ceiling degree of polymerization(CDP) for the brush polymers, beyond which the polymerization of NB-PtBA was out of control. For brush polymers of P[NB-PtBA-2k] and P[NB-PtBA-3k], CDPs were estimated to be ca. 400, but the value of P[NB-PtBA-8k] was ca. 100. Therefore, the controlled ROMP of brush polymers was critical at the CDP limit with increased macromonomer molecular weight.  相似文献

Higher ring-opening metathesis propagation rates of exo-norbornene derivatives over endo derivatives are well established in the literature. Here, we report for the first time that endo-isomers of oxanorbornene derivatives show higher reactivity towards ring-opening metathesis with Grubbs'' 3rd generation catalyst (G3) than the corresponding exo-isomers. A very high selectivity for the reaction of G3 with endo over the exo-isomers could be shown. Furthermore, single molecular addition of the endo-isomers with G3 was observed. On the other hand, pure exo-monomers could successfully be homopolymerized. Mixtures of exo- and endo- monomers, however, prevented the homopolymerization of the exo-monomer. Such mixtures could successfully be copolymerized with cycloalkenes, resulting in alternating copolymers. An oxanorbornadiene derivative could be shown to undergo single addition reactions, exploited in the preparation of mono-end functional ROMP polymers. These could be selectively derivatized via endgroup selective thiol-ene click reactions. A thiol and alcohol end functional ROMP polymer was synthesized, and the efficient end functionalization was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-ToF spectrometry.

Bridgehead revisited: endo-7-oxa norborneneimide derivatives (green) initiate faster but propagate more slowly than the analogous exo-derivatives (red) in ring-opening metathesis allowing the synthesis of alternating and end functional polymers.  相似文献

Polymer networks usually contain numerous inhomogeneities that deteriorate their physical properties and should be eliminated to create reliable, high‐performance materials. A simple method is introduced for the production of nearly ideal networks from various vinyl polymers through controlled polymerization and subsequent crosslinking. Monodisperse star polymers with bromide end groups were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization and end‐linked with dithiol linkers using thiol–bromide chemistry. This simple procedure formed nearly ideal polymer networks, as revealed from elasticity of the formed gel and model conjugation reactions involving linear polymers. The versatility of this method was demonstrated by preparing networks of common vinyl polymers, including polyacrylates, polymethacrylate, and polystyrene. This method can be used to prepare multiple functional nearly ideal gels and elastomers and to explore fundamental aspects of polymer networks.  相似文献

Cell‐based therapies are gaining prominence in treating a wide variety of diseases and using synthetic polymers to manipulate these cells provides an opportunity to impart function that could not be achieved using solely genetic means. Herein, we describe the utility of functional block copolymers synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) that can insert directly into the cell membrane via the incorporation of long alkyl chains into a short polymer block leading to non‐covalent, hydrophobic interactions with the lipid bilayer. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these polymers can be imbued with advanced functionalities. A photosensitizer was incorporated into these polymers to enable spatially controlled cell death by the localized generation of 1O2 at the cell surface in response to red‐light irradiation. In a broader context, we believe our polymer insertion strategy could be used as a general methodology to impart functionality onto cell‐surfaces.  相似文献

Several organostibine chain‐transfer agents possessing polar functional groups have been prepared by the reactions of azo initiators and tetramethyldistibine ( 1 ). Carbon‐centered radicals thermally generated from the azo initiators were trapped by 1 to yield the corresponding organostibine chain‐transfer agents. The high yields observed in the synthesis of the chain‐transfer agents strongly suggest that distibines have excellent radicophilic reactivity. As the reactions proceeded under neutral conditions, functional groups that are incompatible with ionic conditions were incorporated into the chain‐transfer agents. The chain‐transfer agents were used in living radical polymerization to synthesize the corresponding α‐functionalized polymers. As the functional groups in the chain‐transfer agents did not interfere with the polymerization reaction, well‐controlled polymers possessing number‐average molecular weights (Mns) predetermined by the monomer/transfer agent ratios were synthesized with low polydispersity indices (PDIs). The organostibanyl ω‐polymer ends were transformed into a number of different functional groups by radical‐coupling, radical‐addition, and oxidation reactions. Therefore, it was possible to synthesize well‐controlled telechelic polymers with the same and also with different functional groups at their α‐ and ω‐polymer ends. Distibine 1 was also found to increase PDI control in the living radical polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) using a purified organostibine chain‐transfer agent. Well‐controlled poly(methyl methacrylate)s with Mn values ranging from 10 000 to 120 000 with low PDIs (1.05–1.15) were synthesized by the addition of a catalytic amount of 1 . The results have been attributed to the high reactivity of distibine 1 towards polymer‐end radicals, which are spontaneously deactivated to yield organostibine dormant species.  相似文献
