We analyze theoretically the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) under conditions where the probe laser is not in the usual weak limit. We consider the effects in both three-level and four-level systems, which are either closed or open (due to losses to an external metastable level). We find that the EIT dip almost disappears in a closed three-level system but survives in an open system. In four-level systems, there is a narrow enhanced-absorption peak (EITA) at line center, which has applications as an optical clock. The peak converts to an EIT dip in a closed system, but again survives in an open system. 相似文献

The interaction of signal and control fields with an extended medium of two-level atoms with degenerate energy levels is considered in the semiclassical approximation. The effects of recording, storing, and release of signal pulses are studied for several schemes under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The laser-radiation self-action dynamics in the electromagnetically induced transparency band were studied analytically and numerically for an atomic gas with the Λ-type energy-level scheme. The self-consistent system of equations describing the spatiotemporal evolution of a finite-amplitude wave packet in the field of a uniform pump wave was derived. The self-action in the presence of competing diffraction, nonlinear dispersion, and radiation absorption in the system was qualitatively analyzed; in particular, the conditions for self-focusing of a probe beam were determined. The results were confirmed by the numerical simulation of wave-packet spatiotemporal evolution. 相似文献

We propose a method of all-optical investigation of radiofrequency (RF) radiation based on the coherent effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). It is shown that if the atomic coherence is perturbed by an RF field, the shape of probe pulse propagating in a three-level ??-type atomic medium under EIT conditions is modified correspondingly to the temporal structure of the RF pulse. The effect is sensitive to the parameters of the pulse which enables measuring the intensity and the spectrum of the RF pulse. The method can be used for storage and lossless transfer of RF information over long distances using optical pulses. 相似文献

We theoretically investigate the classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in a planar metamaterial at optical frequency, which origi- hates from destructive and constructive interference between dark and radiative elements. The metama- terial consists of two coupled resonators with different geometries. An EIT-like transparent window with low absorption is observed and found to be strongly affected by resonant states of the resonators. The transition between the EIT and EIA is achieved by changing the split width and coupling distance. The absorption is enhanced up to 2.5 times compared with the dipolar case. The excitation of the dark mode is very important for EIT- and EIA-like responses of the proposed metamaterial. The EIT and EIA phenom- ena offer a potential method for manipulating electromagnetic response in metamaterial-based devices. 相似文献

We have succeeded in observing ultraslow propagation of squeezed vacuum pulses with electromagnetically induced transparency. Squeezed vacuum pulses (probe lights) were incident on a laser-cooled 87Rb gas together with an intense coherent light (control light). A homodyne method sensitive to the vacuum state was employed for detecting the probe pulse passing through the gas. A delay of 3.1 micros was observed for the probe pulse having a temporal width of 10 micros. 相似文献

基于马赫-曾德尔干涉仪和平衡零拍探测技术研究了Cs原子6S1/2↔6P3/2↔62D5/2Rydberg态阶梯型三能级系统电磁诱导透明效应中耦合光场的噪声向探测光场相位噪声的转移特性.实验中探测光频率锁定在Cs原子6S1/2↔6P3/2态共振跃迁线上,通过扫描6P3/2到62D5/2态跃迁的耦合光频率,测量了Rydberg态电磁诱导透明光谱.利用探测光经过声光调制器后的一级衍射光实现了马赫-曾德尔干涉仪的相位锁定,测量了不同锁定相位情况下的电磁诱导透明光谱,实验结果与阶梯型三能级系统的理论计算结果符合得很好.在此基础上详细研究了耦合光频率共振在6P3/2到62D5/2态跃迁线上时,耦合光频率噪声向探测光相位噪声的转移特性,发现耦合光频率噪声转移效率在高频处显示出较明显的抑制.同时观察到耦合光在不同失谐情况时,随着耦合光功率的改变,探测光相位噪声的变化特征表现出明显差异. 相似文献

We show that three-level atoms excited by two cavity modes in a Lambda configuration close to electromagnetically induced transparency can produce strongly squeezed bright beams or correlated beams which can be used for quantum nondemolition measurements. The input intensity is the experimental "knob" for tuning the system into a squeezer or a quantum nondemolition device. The quantum correlations become ideal at a critical point characterized by the appearance of a switching behavior in the mean fields intensities. Our predictions, based on a realistic fully quantum three-level model including cavity losses and spontaneous emission, allow direct comparison with future experiments. 相似文献

The nonlinear behavior of a probe pulse propagating in a medium with electromagnetically induced transparency is studied both numerically and analytically. A new type of nonlinear wave equation is proposed in which the noninstantaneous response of nonlinear polarization is treated properly. The resulting nonlinear behavior of the propagating probe pulse is shown to be fundamentally different from that predicted by the simple nonlinear Schr?dinger-like wave equation that considers only instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. 相似文献

We study the ultraslow optical solitons in a resonant
three-level atomic system via electromagnetically induced
transparency under a density-matrix (DM) approach. The results of
linear and nonlinear optical properties are compared with those
obtained by using an amplitude variable (AV) approach. It is found
that the results for both approaches are the same in the linear
regime if the corresponding relations between the
population-coherence decay rates in the DM approach and the
energy-level decay rates in the AV approach are appropriately
imposed. However, in the nonlinear regime there is a small
difference for the self-phase modulation coefficient of the
nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation that governs the time evolution
of probe pulse envelope. All analytical predicts are checked by

We theoretically investigate an enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) cooling method by introduc- ing a high finesse cavity. We find that the quantum destructive interference that is induced by the EIT effect and the cavity coupling can eliminate all of the heating effects in the cooling process by choosing appropriate parameters. Compared with the EIT cooling scheme, a lower final temperature can be obtained under the same conditions in our scheme. 相似文献

The influence of heat motion of atoms in gaseous media on the features of manifestation of electromagnetically induced transparency
is investigated. Taking into account elastic and inelastic collisions, fairly general and compact analytical relations are
derived for the absorption and refraction coefficients of the probe wave in the presence of high-power inducing radiation,
resonant to the adjacent atomic transition. It is shown, that occurrence of narrow resonance structures in the Doppler absorption
and refraction profile is due to “overlap” of effective resonance velocities of atoms. The atomic level splitting in the strong
wave field is uniformly analyzed in the entire intensity range. Interference transparency in a particular region of the Doppler
profile is found to be accompanied by high resonance dispersion of the refraction coefficient, which is important for generating
slow radiation and controlling its parameters.

Storing and perpendicular retrieving of light pulses in electromagnetically
induced transparency media is analyzed. A simple obvious analytical solution
for the retrieved new field is obtained. It is shown that the generated new
pulse time-shape is governed by the initial probe pulse profile while the
profile of the new pulse is governed by the time-shape of the initial probe

We have studied electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra in a frequency span as wide as 300 MHz. This tunability of EIT spectra provides an opportunity to utilize the sub-natural spectra in measuring unknown laser frequency very accurately. EIT is observed when control and probe laser frequency detunings are equal. This correlation has been used to identify and measure unknown probe frequency with a very high degree of accuracy, subject to the condition that control laser frequency is known. 相似文献

We demonstrate coherent optical detection of highly excited Rydberg states (up to n=124) using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), providing a direct nondestructive probe of Rydberg energy levels. We show that the EIT spectra allow direct optical detection of electric field transients in the gas phase, and we extend measurements of the fine structure splitting of the nd series up to n=96. Coherent coupling of Rydberg states via EIT could also be used for cross-phase modulation and photon entanglement. 相似文献

The results of numerical simulation of the electromagnetically induced transparency phenomenon in the ?? scheme of degenerate quantum transitions J = 0 ?? J = 1 ?? J = 2 with Doppler broadening of spectral lines are presented for the cases of continuous and abrupt rises in the leading edge of the input probe radiation pulse. For circularly polarized radiations, it has been shown that the deviation from the condition of adiabatic sequence can lead to a separation of the probe pulse of the adiabaton into a train of subpulses. In the case of linear polarization of the input probe field and the circular polarization of the input control field, the probe radiation pulse is split into two pulses with opposite circular polarizations and a multispike structure of the envelopes. In the case of an abrupt rise in the leading edge of the input probe pulse, regardless of the peak intensity of the latter, the precursor pulse arises at a probe radiation frequency and the velocity of its propagation coincides with the speed of light in vacuum. 相似文献

The linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a coated Rb vapor cell was studied under a magnetic field gradient. The nonlinear broadening of the EIT linewidth with the magnetic field gradient was observed. It was found that the motional averaging of the field gradient was more pronounced at higher laser intensities and larger beam sizes. In the same regime, there was a small linewidth decrease with the increasing magnetic field gradient. We have established a Monte-Carlo model, which gave results in good qualitative agreement with our experiment. Physics pictures for the above phenomena were also suggested. These results provide an understanding of the EIT linewidth behavior under the motional averaging, and should be useful for applications in quantum optics and metrology based on coated vapor cells. 相似文献
