We perform Monte Carlo computer simulations of nematic drops in equilibrium with their vapor using a Gay-Berne interaction between the rod-like molecules. To generate the drops, we initially perform NPT simulations close to the nematic-vapor coexistence region, allow the system to equilibrate and subsequently induce a sudden volume expansion, followed with NVT simulations. The resultant drops coexist with their vapor and are generally not spherical but elongated, have the rod-like particles tangentially aligned at the surface and an overall nematic orientation along the main axis of the drop. We find that the drop eccentricity increases with increasing molecular elongation, κ. For small κ the nematic texture in the drop is bipolar with two surface defects, or boojums, maximizing their distance along this same axis. For sufficiently high κ, the shape of the drop becomes singular in the vicinity of the defects, and there is a crossover to an almost homogeneous texture; this reflects a transition from a spheroidal to a spindle-like drop.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Research advances over the past decade in the areas of nematic phase transition and texture dynamics are reviewed. Research studies applying theoretical techniques able to resolve the length and time scales inherent to liquid crystal (LC) dynamics are focused on: coarse-grained molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics. The focus on LC dynamics is due to their importance in both fundamental and technological processes involving complex LC textures and texture transitions. Meta-stable textures frequently occur in soft matter systems, thus knowledge of LC textures that result in free energy minima for a specific system is not sufficient to characterise its behaviour. Resolution of dynamics enables researchers to predict with more accuracy observable LC textures and texture transitions. As is reflected in the reviewed research, LC dynamics simulations have enabled both validation of simulations with existing experimental observations and predictive results, which augment direct experimentation. While the outlook is positive as a result of this, several key challenges stymie further progress: (i) the availability of validated open-source software implementing nematic dynamics simulation methods, (ii) development of suitable visualisation and characterisation methods for transient three-dimensional LC textures, and (iii) inclusion of thermal fluctuations in nematic dynamics models.  相似文献

Herein we report a group of five planar chiral molecules as photon‐mode chiral switches for the reversible control of the self‐assembled superstructures of doped chiral nematic liquid crystals. The chiral switches are composed of an asymmetrically substituted aromatic moiety and a photoisomerizing azobenzene unit connected in a cyclic manner through methylene spacers of varying lengths. All the molecules show conformational restriction in the rotation of the asymmetrically substituted aromatic moiety in both the E and Z states of the azobenzene units resulting in planar chirality with separable enantiomers. Our newly synthesized compounds in pure enantiomeric form show high helical twisting power (HTP) in addition to an improved change in HTP between the E and Z states. The molecule with a diphenylnaphthalene unit shows the highest ever known initial helical twisting power among chiral dopants with planar chirality. In addition to the reversible tuning of reflection colors, we employed the enantiomers of these five compounds in combination with four nematic liquid crystalline hosts to study their properties as molecular machines; the change in HTP of the chiral dopant upon photoisomerization induces rotation of the texture of the liquid crystal surfaces. Importantly, this study has revealed a linear dependence of the ratio of the difference between HTPs before and after irradiation against the absolute value of the initial HTP, not the absolute value of the change in helical twisting power between two states, on the angle of rotation of micro‐objects on chiral nematic liquid crystalline films. This study has also revealed that a change in irradiation intensity does not affect the maximum angle of rotation, but it does affect the speed of rotational reorganization of the cholesteric helix.  相似文献

In this study,a novel series of chiral 1,2-propanediol derivatives with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and ~1H NMR.The helical twisting properties of all the chiral dopants were investigated by doping the chiral dopants into a nematic liquid crystal host(SLC-1717).The results indicate that the donor-acceptor electron effect have a prominent influence on helical twisting property of the chiral nematic phase induced by the chiral dopants. Introducing electron-withdrawing groups into the terminal ends of chiral 1,2-propanediol can decrease the absolute values of the helical twisting power. In addition, the helix inversion temperatures of the induced chiral nematic phase are variational with the change of terminal groups.  相似文献

Achiral banana-shaped molecules with dodecyloxy tail groups, P-12-O-PIMB, N-12-O-PIMB, and S-12-O-PIMB, have exhibited unusual smectic phases which possess chiral and helical structures. In this work, we mixed these banana-shaped molecules with the chiral molecule forming a chiral nematic liquid crystal and found an exclusive effect of the achiral dopant that the twisting power of the chiral nematic phase in the mixtures is significantly increased with the increase of the content of achiral banana-shaped molecules. This characteristic effect in the chiral nematic field seems to offer the rational evidence for the twist conformation of such banana-shaped molecules, since the chirality should be included intrinsically within each chain. The asymmetric twist conformation in the ester linkage group connecting the central core with the side wings is likely to be the origin of enhanced twisting power.  相似文献

We experimentally studied a nematic liquid crystal whose molecules form twisted head-to-head H-bonded dimers. We observed that when the material transformed from the isotropic to nematic phase, it formed droplets with chiral propeller textures. We carried out a computer simulation to investigate the liquid crystal director configuration inside the droplets and to study the effects of elastic constants and chirality on the droplet texture. Results of our study show it is likely that the material in the droplets had nonzero chirality due to spontaneous chiral phase separation.  相似文献

Recent experiments indicate that liquid crystals can be used to optically report the presence of biomolecules adsorbed at solid surfaces. In this work, numerical simulations are used to investigate the effects of biological molecules, modeled as spherical particles, on the structure and dynamics of nematic ordering. In the absence of adsorbed particles, a nematic in contact with a substrate adopts a uniform orientational order, imposed by the boundary conditions at this surface. It is found that the relaxation to this uniform state is slowed down by the presence of a small number of adsorbed particles. However, beyond a critical concentration of adsorbed particles, the liquid crystal ceases to exhibit uniform orientational order at long times. At this concentration, the domain growth is characterized by a first regime where the average nematic domain size LD obeys the scaling law LDt approximately t1/2; at long times, a slow dynamics regime is attained for which LD tends to a finite value corresponding to a metastable state with a disordered texture. The results of simulations are consistent with experimental observations.  相似文献

New photoisomerizable chiral dopants have been studied. The dopants used were menthone derivatives, a chiral stilbene derivative and a nematic copolymer of a menthone derivative and a benzoyloxybenzonitrile derivative. NMR, HPLC and UV results showed that the E-Z-isomerization of all the compounds indicated proceeded rapidly upon UV exposure, without the formation of undesired by-products. Isomerization of the menthone derivatives, including the copolymer, induced a substantial decrease in the helical twisting power. The changes in helical twisting power induced by the isomerization of the chiral stilbene derivative were limited to a factor of 2. In mixtures of the photoisomerizable dopants with commercial dopants of opposite twisting senses and a nematic host mixture, the sign of the twisting sense could be reversed by illuminating the mixture with UV light. The viewing angle dependence of irradiated regions of a 90 -twisted nematic cell was rotated 90 with respect to the viewing angle dependence of the non-irradiated regions. It is expected that this approach may be useful in the preparation of dual domain TN cells with a reduced viewing angle dependence.  相似文献

Recent significant advances in theoretical liquid crystalline rheology are presented. Dynamic simulations are performed using a complete theory which include the three major effects of liquid crystalline materials: (1) short range order elasticity, (2) long range order elasticity, and (3) viscous flow effects. The results and discussions include rectilinear simple shear flow, complex non-linear phenomena such as defect texture generation and coarsening processes under quiescent and shear conditions, and pattern formation such as banded texture during and after cessation of flow. The complete theory predicts four in-plane (1-D orientation) flow modes and five out-of-plane (2-D orientation) flow modes in one-dimensional shear flow, depending on the magnitudes of R (ratio of short to long range order elasticity) and Er (Ericksen number: ratio of viscous to elastic force). The multistability of these flow modes is clearly explained in terms of degrees of freedoms in the nematic orientation. The number of degrees of freedom increases with increasing the spatial dimension of the system, and thus more complex orientation patterns arise in the higher dimension. Well-known defect structures arise and coarsen during simulations of the isotropic to nematic phase transition. The effect of shear flow on the defect generation process is to suppress the defect nucleation, and the simulations suggest a method of how to create defect-free nematic samples. The banded textures during and after cessation of flow are also captured by the complete theory.  相似文献

Two liquid-crystalline materials containing an optically active (R)-4-hydroxy-[2,2]-paracyclophane group were prepared, one in which the chiral group is a bulky terminal unit and one in which it forms part of a terphenyl-like mesogenic unit. Both materials exhibit monotropic chiral nematic phases. Partial phase diagrams were constructed for mixtures of both materials with 5CB, allowing us to extrapolate pitch lengths and helical twisting power values (HTP) for each material. The HTP value of the material with a ‘locked’ paracyclophane is 70% higher than that of a ‘free’ paracyclophane and this is rationalised as being due to the reduction in conformational freedom of the former material relative to the later.  相似文献

Enantiomerically and diastereomerically pure bis-chelated imine-alkoxytitanium complexes 6 and 7 have been synthesized and used as chiral dopants for converting nematic into cholesteric phases. The dopants were tested in mainly commercially available nematic liquid crystalline compounds or mixtures: LC1 (BASF), ZLI-1695 and ZLI-1840 (Merck), as well as N-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4'-butylaniline (MBBA). The values of the helical twisting power (HTP) were determined by the Grandjean-Cano method. Exceptionally high helical twisting powers were obtained. Thus, the titanium complex 6 h displayed a HTP value of 740 microm(-1) in MBBA, the highest HTP value reported. The helical twisting power has been found to depend strongly on the structure of the nematic phase and the substitution pattern of the chiral ligand in the titanium complexes 6 and 7. Crystal structure analysis of 6 f confirmed the A,R,R configuration of the metal complex. The chiral imine ligands 4 and 5 were derived from the regioisomeric amino alcohols 1 and 2.  相似文献

We present a Monte Carlo molecular simulation method that calculates the helical twisting power of a chiral molecule by sampling intermolecular torques. The approach is applied to an achiral nematic liquid crystalline system, composed of Gay-Berne particles, that is doped with chiral molecules. Calculations are presented for six chiral dopant molecules and the results show a good correlation with the sign and magnitude of experimentally determined helical twisting powers.  相似文献

A series of crown ether type binaphthyl derivatives (CEBDs) were synthesized and used as chiral dopants to induce chiral nematic (N*) liquid crystals (LCs). The twisting powers of the CEBDs for phenylcyclohexane (PCH)-derived nematic LCs were evaluated. It was found that the twisting powers of the CEBDs increased with decreasing ring size of the crown ether. Helical polyacetylenes were synthesized in the N*-LCs induced by the CEBDs. The relationship between the morphology of the helical polyacetylene and the helical structure of the N*-LC was investigated. The result showed that the interdistance between the fibril bundles of the helical polyacetylene was equal to a half-helical pitch of the N*-LC and the screw direction of the polyacetylene fibrils was opposite to that of the N*-LC.  相似文献

The Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation has been utilised to synthesise a new glassy chiral dopant with large helical twisting power (β) and remarkable solubility in nematic liquid crystal hosts. Values of β range between +30.7 and +47.7 μm?1 in five different nematic hosts. A 26% mixture in E7 is homogenous indefinitely and induces a room-temperature blue phase.  相似文献

The banded texture in films prepared from nematic poly (1,4-benzamide) (PBA)/H_2SO_4 solution by shearing and without shearing has been studied by using microscopy techniques. The kinetic parameters of banded texture formation γ_c and τ_b were measured for nematic solution of PBA by using parallel-plate shearing apparatus. The banded texture was also observed in randomly packed domains for nematic solution of PBA on standing without shearing. The properties of banded texture show no difference between the two samples with or without shearing.  相似文献

A new decoration method termed as focal‐conic texture decoration has been established to map the director field of disclinations of nematic mesophases for a side‐chain liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP) based on its transition from nematic to smectic phase with focal‐conic texture observed under a polarizing optical microscope. FT‐IR microscopy was used to ascertain the relationship between the mesogenic orientation direction and the orientation direction of focal‐conic texture, which exhibits consequently the director field of a disclination.  相似文献

Five photochromic chiral azobenzene compounds and one nonphotochromic chiral compound were synthesized and characterized by IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Cholesteric liquid crystalline phases were induced by mixing of the nonphotochromic chiral compound and one of the photochromic chiral azobenzene compounds in a host nematic liquid crystal (E44). The helical pitch of the induced cholesteric phase was determined by Cano's wedge method and the helical twisting power (HTP) of each sample was thus determined. The helical twisting powers of azobenzene compounds were decreased upon UV irradiation, due to trans-->cis photoisomerization of azobenzene molecules. Among the azobenzene compounds synthesized in our study, Azo-5, with isomannide (radical) as chiral photochromic dopant, showed the highest HTP and contrast ratio (Tmax/Tmin). Photoswitching between compensated nematic phase and cholesteric phase was achieved through reversible trans<-->cis photoisomerization of the chiral azobenzene molecules through irradiation with UV and visible light, respectively. Transmission rates (contrast ratios) increased with decreasing helical pitch length in the induced cholesteric phase. The influence of helical twisting power on the photoswitching behavior of chiral azobenzene compounds is discussed in detail.  相似文献

Nematic liquid crystals confined in a cylindrical capillary and subjected to strong homeotropic anchoring conditions is a long-studied fundamental problem that uniquely incorporates nonlinearity, topological stability, defects, and texture physics. The observed and predicted textures that continue to be investigated include escape radial, radial with a line defect, planar polar with two line defects, and periodic array of point defects. This paper presents theory and multiscale simulations of global and fine scale textures of nematic point defects, based on the Landau-de Gennes tensor order parameter equations. The aim of this paper is to further investigate the ringlike nature of point defect cores and its importance on texture transformation mechanisms and stability. The paper shows that the ringlike cores can be oriented either along the cylinder axis or along the radial direction. Axial rings can partially expand but are constrained by the capillary sidewalls. Radial rings can deform into elliptical structures whose major axis is along the capillary axis. The transformation between several families of textures under capillary confinement as well as their stability is discussed in terms of defect ring distortions. A unified view of nematic textures found in the cylindrical cavities is provided.  相似文献

The helical structure of the chiral nematic phases induced by chiral dopants in nematic solvents provides a macroscopic image of the molecular chirality of the dopant promoted by the orientational order. Chiral biphenyls are challenging systems because their twisting ability shows a strong dependence on the molecular structure, which does not conform to empirical correlation rules. This points out the need for adequate interpretative tools, able to establish a link between molecular properties and macroscopic response. In this paper the twisting ability of chiral biphenyls is reviewed, by reporting examples taken from the literature together with some new experimental results. The microscopic origin of the observed behavior is explained in terms of chirality and anisotropy of short-range and electrostatic-induction interactions. These are described, respectively, by a shape model and a reaction field method, having the common characteristics of a realistic representation of the structure and properties of the chiral dopants in terms of molecular surface, atom charges, and distributed polarizabilities.  相似文献
