A kind of blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC), consisting of nematic liquid crystal, E7, and chiral dopants, CB15 and R1011, was investigated by doping PbS nanoparticles. The blue phase temperature range was extended from 3oC to 4.6°C by doping PbS nanoparticles with diameters around 9.6 nm. A kind of porous texture was observed both in the forming process of PbS nanoparticles doped BPLCs as well as in the BPLCs (with/without PbS nanoparticles) under assisting electric field. The porous texture may indicate that the liquid crystals molecule should be reoriented during the formation process of PbS nanoparticles doped BPLCs.  相似文献

We demonstrate a new successful technique for inducing a monodomain in blue phase (BP) liquid crystals (BPLCs). By application of an AC voltage during the cooling or heating of the material into the BP temperature range, a fairly homogeneous BP area was obtained, compared to the case without voltage. We determined that applying a voltage of 3.3 V/µm was very effective in terms of obtaining a monodomain: for four of the seven different applied cooling/heating rates an area ratio of more than 99% was obtained for one particular BP orientation. This study describes a successful and replicable technique to make a BPLC monodomain, which is important for the development of BPLCs and other applications.  相似文献

We reported a fluorine-containing binaphthyl derivative, denoted as BD-F, which showed a low helical twisted power. The blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) doped with BD-F achieved a lower operating voltage than that only used traditional chiral dopant, resulting from the larger dielectric property of fluorinated BD-F. In addition, the BPLC composite exhibited a wider temperature range and an enhanced Kerr effect with the decreased frequency. In terms of the applications, the devices revealed microsecond response time, thereby providing broad prospects for photonics and displays.  相似文献

A blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) lens with multifunction using multi-electrode structure and a dielectric layer with high dielectric constant is proposed. The refractive index of the BPLC can be changed flexibly in different regions. Some functional or technical requirements such as switch between positive and negative lenses can be achieved. The lens reveals a good parabolic refractive index distribution and focus adjustment capacity simultaneously. The applied voltage on the electrodes is regular and computable. To decrease the applied voltage of the proposed lens with a large diameter, a drive-type adopted Fresnel lens is introduced.  相似文献

We propose a blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) lens array based on dual square ring-patterned electrodes. A high dielectric constant layer is used to smoothen out the horizontal electric field and reduce the operating voltage. By creating a potential difference between the dual square ring-patterned electrodes, gradient electric fields are generated and lens-like phase profile is obtained. Besides, the focal length of the BPLC lens is adjustable with voltage changes and all simulation results indicate that the BPLC lens array is polarisation-insensitive.  相似文献

A series of physically cross-linked hydrogels composed poly(acrylic acid) and octylphenol polyoxyethylene acrylate with high mechanical strength are reported here with dual cross-linked networks that formed by silica nanoparticles (SNs) and hydrophobic association micro-domains (HAMDs). Acrylic acid (AA) and octylphenol polyoxyethylene acrylate with 10 ethoxyl units (OP-10-AC) as basic monomers in situ graft from the SNs surface to build poly(acrylic acid) hydrophilic backbone chains with randomly distributed OP-10-AC hydrophobic side chains. The entanglements among grafted backbone polymer chains and hydrophobic branch architecture lead to the SNs and HAMDs play the role of physical cross-links for the hydrogels network structure. The rheological behavior and polymer concentration for gelation process are measured to examine the critical gelation conditions. The correlation of the polymer dual cross-linked networks with hydrogels swelling behavior, gel-to-sol phase transition, and mechanical strength are addressed, and the results imply that the unique dual cross-linking networks contribute the hydrogels distinctive swelling behavior and excellent tensile strength. The effects of SNs content, molecular weight of polymer backbone, and temperature on hydrogels properties are studied, and the results indicate that the physical hydrogel network integrity is depended on the SNs and HAMDs concentration.  相似文献

A fast response (sub-milliseconds) and polarisation-independent blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) microlens array with periodical double layer electrodes using different dielectric layers is proposed. The bottom double layer electrodes are coated with transparent and different dielectric layers to generate linearly varying electric potential from the centre to the edge, while the top planar electrode iridium tin oxide (ITO) electrode has a constant potential. As a result, gradient vertical electric fields are generated, and a gradient refractive index profile is obtained. When the applied voltage is changed, the focal length of the BPLC microlens array can be tuned from ∞ to 12.05 mm while keep a low operating voltage (~35Vrms). Besides, the driving mode (simplification driving) and fabrication process (using printing method or mold-pressing method) of the BPLC microlens array is very simple. The simulation results show that the BPLC microlens array is insensitive to the polarisation of incident light while keeping parabolic-like phase profile.  相似文献

Liquid-crystalline blue phases (BPs) are stable only for very narrow temperature range between the isotropic and the chiral nematic phase that severely hinders their applicability. Herein, the aminoazobenzol group was chemically grafted onto epoxy group of graphene oxide (GO) via addition reaction. Successful grafting of aminoazobenzol group was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–vis absorption spectra and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The resultant aminoazobenzol group–modified GO sheets, which is reduced (RGO-Az), were easily redispersable in common organic solvents or liquid crystals (LCs). By doping different contents of RGO-Az, nanosheets could stabilise BP and increase the BP range. When doped with 0.5 wt% RGO-Az, the mixtures show the wider range with 5.9°C than the range with 3.6°C of BPLCs without RGO-Az. Meanwhile, the phase sequence and the range of the aforementioned phases are reproducible upon heating and cooling, which shows that the BPs doped with RGO-Az nanosheets are thermodynamically stable.  相似文献

A polarisation-free blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) lens with enhanced tunable focal length range is proposed. A matched conventional glass lens is introduced on a BPLC lens to increase the range of the tunable focal length. The focal length of the BPLC lens can be switched from positive to negative, the negative lens-like phase profile can be neutralised by the conventional glass lens to get an infinity focal length and the positive lens-like phase profile can be enhanced by the conventional glass lens to get a shorter focal length. The minimum focal length can be decreased to almost half of that after the proposed method is adopted in our simulation. Moreover, the proposed BPLC lens exhibits a good polarisation-free feature and the optical effect is relatively good.  相似文献

We proposed a one-dimensional model for simulating some performances of blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) and polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal (PSBPLCD). The one-dimensional model treats liquid crystal arrangement of BPLC as cholesteric liquid crystal with high and uniform tilt angle to simulate the Bragg reflection of BPLC. The simulated results agree quite well with the experimental results. The elastic and dynamical equations are formed to calculate the effective elastic parameters and the response times of PSBPLCD. The effective elastic parameter is a constant for low electric field and decreases with the increasing of electric field. The varied effective elastic parameter means the varied restoring force of liquid crystal under the electric field. The dynamical equations are proposed to calculate response times, and the response mechanism of BPLCD is discussed by researching the difference between the decay times from equation and experiment. The sub-millisecond response time results from the weak anchoring of polymer network or the increasing of rotational viscosity of PSBPLC with high-concentration monomer, and the reason of 10 µs response time is the strong anchoring and small amount of chiral dopant and monomer.  相似文献

A simple method for fabricating a polarisation independent blue-phase liquid crystal Fresnel lens (BPLCFL) is demonstrated by utilising the photo-polymerisation-induced phase separation. The BPLC/polymer binary Fresnel zones is obtained well by periodic UV illumination with phase separation of the BPLC molecules and UV-curable pre-polymer mixture. The diffraction efficiency can be controlled when applying a uniform electric field which modulates the phase difference between even and odd Fresnel zones. Experimental results show that the maximum diffraction efficiency reaches 24.3%, which is close to the measured diffraction efficiency of the used Fresnel zone-plate mask of 25%. We also characterise the tunable lens performance at different applied voltages.  相似文献

The resultant oleic acid (OA)-modified LaF3 (OA-LaF3) NPs were easily dispersed well in common organic solvents or liquid crystals (LCs). Usually, the stability of BPs depends on a well-arranged double-twisted alignment and a stable defect. Theoretical simulation shows that the BPLCs is likely to trap the doped nanoparticles due to the elastic interactions.By means of the OA-LaF3 NPs we synthesized and doping into conventional polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystals (PS-BPLCs), it was observed that the on-state voltage can be reduced by 41% when the PS-BPLCs doped with 0.8wt. % OA-LaF3 NPs compared with that PS-BPLCs without OA-LaF3 NPs. It showed significant effects on the driving voltage when doping OA-LaF3 NPs to PS-BPLCs. Our studies will certainly provide an effective and simple method to stabilize cubic BP structures and improve the electronic-optical performances, leading to potential applications in areas of displays as well as optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

We demonstrated a relatively simple and effective method to fabricate a periodically isolated polymer wall of blue-phase liquid crystal Fresnel lens (BPLCFL) by employing a single-masking process of the ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, leading to excellent photopolymerisation-induced phase separation between blue -phase liquid crystal (BPLC) molecules and UV-curable monomers. Nevertheless, some uncured monomers would inherently reside in the BPLC-rich area and slightly inhibit the BPLC molecules realigned under the external electric field. To enhance the optical properties of the polymer-wall BPLCFL considerably, a novel technique for fabricating a pure BPLC zone is proposed that successfully expels the residual monomers from the BPLC volume using a thermal annealing process. Experimental results show that the maximum diffraction efficiency reaches ~36%, which approaches the theoretical limit of ~41%. Consequently, the annealing technique to purify phase-separated composite films has a strong potential to construct the BPLCFL in light of polarisation-free applications.  相似文献

Horizontally non-uniform electric field along the vertical direction inside blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) layer induces the Gradient index (GRIN) lens effect. Dependence of lens performance on the incident angle and polarisation is investigated by calculating the spatial phase distribution and the direction of wave front for lights passing through the BPLC layer. The calculated trajectories of light rays show that the focal distance for e-wave is less affected by the incidence angle than the focal distance of the o-wave. This can be attributed to the fact that steepness of spatial distribution of the effective refractive index for e-wave decreases for the larger incident angles.  相似文献

We propose a new electrode configuration, called diamond-shape in-plane switching, to lower the operation voltage of polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) displays (BPLCDs). The electrode structure is modified from conventional protruded IPS, where the strip protrusion is changed to diamond shape. By optimising the electrode gap and diamond length, we are able to obtain peak transmittance over 75% at 15 V. It enables single thin-film transistor (TFT) driving, and more importantly, this is based on an industrially proven BPLC material. That means good long-term stability, adequate TFT charging time for high-resolution displays and sub-millisecond response time and acceptable voltage-holding ratio for field sequential displays can be achieved simultaneously. Our device design helps accelerate the emergence of the long-awaited BPLCDs.  相似文献

在用琥珀酸二异辛酯磺酸钠(AOT)构建的具有长程有序结构的层状溶致液晶内, 用不同方式导入预制的亲油或亲水贵金属纳米粒子, 可得到纳米粒子分布在不同介观空间内的无机/有机杂合体. 依据小角X射线散射和偏光显微镜结果, 通过分析掺杂纳米粒子与液晶模板的相互作用, 对掺杂前后体系结构的变化及制得杂合体的稳定性进行了表征. 结果表明, 除考虑掺杂粒子与层状模板空间的匹配外, 体系中静电斥力、范德华引力和Helfrich涨落力之间的平衡是维持液晶结构稳定的基本条件.  相似文献

用固相反应合成了Pb1-xTbxTi1-xMnxO3(0≤x≤0.10)固溶体,并用X射线粉末衍射进行了表征,室温下其空间群为P4mm.热分析仪测试结果显示,随着Tb和Mn掺杂量的增加,该固溶体的相变温度Tc降低.介电常数在Tc附近出现峰值,表明对应的相变是铁电相变.磁性测量显示,当x=0.08和x=0.10时,Pb1-xTbxTi1-xMnxO3分别在25和29 K附近有顺磁性向反铁磁性的转变.  相似文献

The hydrophobic fumed silica suspensions physically pre-adsorbed poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) in water could prepare oil dispersed in water (O/W) Pickering emulsion by mixing of silicone oil. The resulting Pickering emulsions were characterized by the measurements of volume factions of emulsified silicone oil, adsorbed amounts of the silica suspensions, oil droplet size, and some rheological responses, such as stress-strain sweep curve and dynamic viscoelastic moduli as a function of the added amount of PNIPAM. Moreover, their characteristics were compared with those of the O/W Pickering emulsions prepared by the hydrophilic fumed silica suspensions pre-adsorbed PNIPAM. For the emulsions prepared by the hydrophobic silica suspensions, an increase in the added amount of PNIPAM led to (1) a decrease in the volume fraction of the emulsified oil in the emulsified phase, (2) both the size of oil droplets and the adsorbed amount of the corresponding silica suspensions being almost constant, except for the higher added amounts, and (3) both the storage modulus (G′) and the yield shear strain being constant. The term of 1 is the same for the emulsions prepared by the hydrophilic silica suspensions, whereas both the adsorbed amount of the corresponding silica suspension and the G′ value increase and both the droplet size and the yield shear strain decrease with an increase in the added amount of PNIPAM. The differences between the rheological properties of the emulsions prepared by the hydrophilic silica suspensions and those by the hydrophobic ones are attributed to the hydrophobic interactions of the flocculated silica particles in the Pickering emulsions.  相似文献

We report a polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) in an in-plane-switching (IPS) cell with negligible hysteresis and good stability. Long ultraviolet (UV) wavelength and top-side (no IPS electrode) exposure create uniform polymer network, which in turn helps to suppress hysteresis. The effect of photoinitiator is also investigated. Although a BPLC precursor without photoinitiator requires a higher UV dosage to stabilise the polymer network, it is favourable for keeping high resistivity and reducing image sticking.  相似文献

In this paper, four kinds of polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystals (PS-BPLCs) with different monomer were designed and prepared. The morphology, temperature ranges and electro-optical properties of the blue phase were studied and discussed. The temperature ranges of four BPLCs are more than 90°C, and all samples can be stabilized well at room temperature. Referring to electro-optical performance, on-state voltage for mono-functional monomers systems is reduced from 75 V to 65 V at 497 nm. On-state voltage for tri-functional monomers systems is reduced from 107 V to 85 V at 497 nm. These results are helpful to the application of display and photonic devices.  相似文献
