As part of our detailed comparative studies of groups of liquid-crystalline compounds that belong to a homologous series, we present phase-transition studies of the compounds N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-pentylaniline (5O.5) and N-(4-n-nonyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-butylaniline (9O.4) using different experimental techniques. The compound 5O.5 is reported to exhibit a phase sequence N, SA, SC, SB and SG, while 90.4 shows the sequence SA, SF and SG. The salient features of our work on 5O.5 are (i) a new smectic F phase is found in place of the reported smectic B phase, which is confirmed by both miscibility and X-ray studies; (ii) the formation of smectic-C-like short-range order in the nematic phase well above the SA-N transition; and (iii) a large tilt-angle variation in the smectic C phase (0-23·5°C) in a small temperature range (4·1°C). The phase changes across the SA-I transition, and for the first time across SF-SA transition, are carried out by volumetric studies. The detailed inferences of these are also presented.  相似文献

Laser Raman studies on two compounds of the α,ω-bis(4-alkylanilinebenzylidene -4′-oxy)alkane series were carried out in the spectral regions 1140–1220 and 1550–1650 cm-1 as a function of temperature. Compounds 7.O4O.7 and 7.O5O.7, exhibit SmA and SmF phases. The structural differences between these liquid crystal dimers, having either an odd or an even number of carbon atoms in the spacer, are remarkably existent in the room temperature Raman spectra. The results are rationalized on the basis of the tendency of these compounds to exhibit bent shapes, and how this manifests in the odd-even effect at the molecular level assuming a semi-rigid core region of the dimeric molecule. It is found that the behaviour of the odd spacer dimer (7.O5O.7) agrees with the molecular model, whereas the even spacer dimer (7.O4O.7) behaves in a similar fashion to monomeric compounds such as the nO.m. compounds. In both cases, dynamic changes around the C=N bond have a profound effect both on the molecular shape in the different phases and on phase behaviour.  相似文献

Using a photoelastic modulator-based novel set-up, the electric field-induced in-plane birefringence and the optical rotatory power (ORP) were measured of an antiferroelectric liquid crystalline compound (12OF1M7) in its various phases using 30 µm homeotropic cells. Some specific signatures of the in-plane birefringence and of the ORP for the various phases are being established. A relatively small threshold field is needed for the unwinding process of the antiferroelectric phase with a unit cell of four layers [SmCA*(1/2)] compared with that for two layers [SmCA*(0)]. On application of the electric field on the high temperature side of the SmCA*(1/2) phase (80.1-81.5°C), a field-induced phase transition is shown to occur directly to the SmC* phase, whereas on the lower temperature side (79.4-80.1°C) the transition takes place to SmC* via the SmCA*(1/3) phase. The in-plane birefringence exhibits a critical power law dependence for the SmC*-SmA transition. The ORP changes sign within the temperature range of the phase with a unit cell of three layers, reflecting a change in the handedness during this phase. Using tilted conoscopy, the results for the biaxiality and the apparent tilt angle for a smectic liquid crystal with a tilt angle greater than 18° in the ferroelectric phase are reported. The biaxiality implies the difference in the refractive indices between the two minor axes of the refractive index ellipsoid. The optical transmittance at visible and IR wavelengths for free-standing films reveal characteristic reflection bands for these phases. The modulated structures of the reflected bands appear just above the SmCA* phase and below SmCA*(1/3); these are possibly due to an easy deformation of the phase by the surfaces.  相似文献

We present the results of our investigations on the electrooptic properties of the smectic O and O* phases of m7tac (1-methylheptyl terephthalylidene-bis-4-aminocinnamate). At low voltages, we observed striking electrochromic effects and, in O* at high voltages, a field induced phase transition. Freely suspended thick films of m7tac in the O and O* phases are weakly biaxial. A framework is proposed to account for our observations.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of the measurement of refractive indices and densities of p-ethoxyphenyl trans-4-butyl cyclohexane carboxylate at different temperatures. The molecular polarizabilities have been calculated from refractive indices using Vuks' formula and orientational order parameters are determined from the polarizability values. The order parameter values have been compared with those obtained from Maier-Saupe theory. The compound shows anomalous behaviour regarding variation of density, ordinary refractive index and order parameter values with temperature. This is consistent with our previous X-ray study of this compound. The possible reason for this peculiar behaviour has been discussed.  相似文献

The results of optical microscopy, DSC, X-ray diffraction and optical birefringence studies on four nematogenic difluorobenzene derivatives are presented. The thermal stability of the compounds increases substantially as greater flexibility is introduced into the core structure. Average intermolecular distances, obtained from X-ray data, are found to increase when a comparatively rigid planar phenyl ring is substituted by a flexible non-planar cyclohexyl ring in the core structure. From the values of apparent molecular lengths in the nematic phase, a short range antiferroelectric type of association is found to exist between neighbouring molecules. Density values suggest that the molecular packing is less efficient with increasing flexibility either in chain- or in core-structure. All the refractive indices exhibit normal dispersive behaviour, and a positive optical anisotropy is observed in all the compounds which decreases quickly with temperature. Temperature dependences of orientational order parameters, determined from both X-ray and optical birefringence studies, are presented. Variations of different physical properties with order parameters are discussed.  相似文献

The Raman and infrared spectra of gas phase Re(2)O(7) are reported. The experimental vibrational spectra of molecular Tc(2)O(7) and Re(2)O(7) are compared with calculated spectra. The results of these studies agree with a nonlinear M-O-M bridge for Tc(2)O(7) and Re(2)O(7). For infrared intensity calculations, the point charge approximation is used, while for the Raman calculations a combination of bond and atom polarizabilities is adopted. Pure Re(2)O(7) was prepared from rhenium wire, but attempts to prepare it from rhenium powder and oxygen always led to infrared spectra showing serious contamination from a species containing an -OH linkage. Detailed experiments identified this molecule as HReO(4), a unique transition metal analogue of the perhalic acids, and a partial infrared spectrum of this molecule is reported.  相似文献

The anticlinic smectic CA phase belongs to the class of tilted smectic phases with an azimuthal angle alternating from one direction (theta=0) to the other (theta=pi) in successive layers. It occurs in general at lower temperature than the uniformly tilted smectic C phase, but may be obtained directly from the untilted smectic A phase. We use the chiral nCTBB9* series synthesized in this laboratory, in order to obtain a phase transition as close as possible to second order, as revealed by DSC. We measure the temperature behaviour of the birefringence and of the optical rotatory power across the transition in order to characterize the tilt angle. We finally study the optical response to a periodic electric field which excites separately the smectic C* and C*A soft modes. The main conclusion is that the only order parameter governing the critica Al behaviour of the phase transition is the tilt angle theta, as we get common divergence of both soft modes at the same temperature. This confirms previous high resolution calorimetric studies by Ema et al. that saw in MHPOBC an initial mean-field second order phase transition when the tilt appears, followed by sharp first order restructuring transitions between the tilted subphases.  相似文献

A detailed optical study for a Schiff's base liquid crystalline nO.m compound (6O.6) is reported in this article. The phase transition temperatures for the compound were investigated using a polarising microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Refractive index studies were conducted using the thin prism method with the 633 nm line from a He–Ne laser. The order parameters of the compound were calculated from the refractive index data. Order parameters calculated by two methods, namely, direct extrapolation method and modified Vuks’ method were found to be in close agreement. The normalised polarisabilities for extraordinary and ordinary rays and their ratio for the sample were also calculated. The order parameters are found to be reasonably high and the trend shown by normalised polarisabilities substantiates the correctness of our results. From the methods we adopted, the order parameters and the normalised polarisabilities could be determined directly from the refractive index measurements without doing the density studies. Both these methods are found to be highly suitable for the calculation of order parameters of liquid crystalline compounds having high clearing temperature where density studies are difficult and hazardous.  相似文献

After preparing a homologous series of tetrameric mesogenic compounds in which two U-shaped molecules were connected via a rigid benzene derivative or a flexible alkyl chain, we investigated their phase transition behaviour using optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis. The compounds possessing an alkyl spacer as the central group exhibited nematic and smectic A phases just as the corresponding U-shaped molecule did. The compound possessing a 1,2-benzene unit as the connecting group showed nematic and smectic A phases, although the compound possessing a 1,3-benzene unit exhibited only an anticlinic smectic C phase. Structure–property relations of the liquid crystalline tetramers are interpreted in terms of preorganised effects of the four mesogenic units.  相似文献

In this study, we offer a new family of alkylthio-containing diphenylacetylene-based liquid crystalline molecules (the so-called tolanes) showing nematic phases stable down to room temperature and high birefringence, with insights into the role for terminal alkyl chains in mesogenic incidence and tendency. A number of asymmetric tolane homologues having various alkyl chain lengths in the alkylthio and alkyl groups at each p-, p’-position were synthesised, and their phase transition behaviour was investigated by polarising optical microscope observation, differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurement. Consequently, several homologues exhibited monotropic nematic or highly ordered smectic (soft crystal) phases stable down to room temperature. It is found that a long alkyl group on the side opposite to an alkylthio group is prerequisite for mesogenic incidence. In addition, a nematogenic homologue exhibited a higher birefringence value of 0.20 compared to that of 0.19 for an alkoxy counterpart.  相似文献

We have measured the d.c. electric field dependence of the birefringence and conoscopic images for the smectic C* phase of a partially racemized ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal CE-8. The experiments were performed using 50mu m thick homeotropic cells with lateral electrodes which created a d.c. electric field parallel to the smectic layers. The observed field induced birefringence shows a characteristic step-like behaviour which is due to the stepby-step unwinding of the helical structure in a sample with finite dimensions along the helical axis. In conoscopic observations we observe that these steps are associated with moving disclination lines that traverse the sample in the direction of the smectic layers. The observed electric field dependence of the birefringence is discussed in terms of the soliton-like unwinding of helical smectic structures and compared with the predictions of the Landau theory. A qualitatively good agreement is obtained.  相似文献

A new six-ring double-swallow-tailed compound is presented which shows four liquid crystalline phases. In addition to a smectic C phase and two columnar phases (oblique and hexagonal), a high temperature mesophase was observed which exhibits a very weak birefringence and which shows unusual optical textures.  相似文献

The phase diagram of a two component system composed of two smectic compounds: 4-octyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8OCB) and 4-isothiocyanatophenyl 4-butylbenzoate (4TPB) was investigated. Three Miesowicz viscosity coefficients η1, η2, η3 and the refractive indices at different temperatures as well as the enthalpies of the phase transitions were measured. It was stated, that the properties of the induced nematic phase, for example, the nematic phase existing between two smectic regions, are the same as the ones observed in the case of low viscosity nematic mesogens.  相似文献

New hockey stick-shaped mesogens with a lateral methyl group inserted between the m-alkyloxy-chain and the azomethine connecting group, 4-(3-n-alkyloxy-2-methyl-phenyliminomethyl) phenyl-4-n-alkyloxycinnamates have been synthesised. The interesting feature of these hockey stick-shaped mesogens is the appearance of the nematic phase in addition to two polymorphic tilted smectic phases – the synclinic smectic C (SmCs) and the anticlinic SmCa phase. Physical characterisation of these mesogens has been carried out using polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, optical birefringence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electro–optical and dielectric spectroscopy measurements. The SmCs–SmCa phase transition is accompanied by only a small calorimetric signal but causes a pronounced change in the optical textures. Orientational order parameters determined from the birefringence measurements have been compared with those estimated from XRD patterns. Dielectric measurements point to the formation of small ‘soft’ ferroelectric clusters responsible for a low frequency absorption range.  相似文献
