Wavelength tuning characteristics of a Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser with an external short cavity are analyzed, in which the oscillation wavelength can be changed by slightly altering the external cavity length. Analysis is based on rate equations for an optical power and carrier density. It is shown that the wavelength tuning range is dominated by a change of carrier density through the effect of carrier-induced refractive index change in the active layer of a laser diode. This depends on effective coupling coefficients of the optical field iteratively reflected back to the laser diode by the external mirror, and on reflection coefficients of an anti-reflection coated laser facet and the external mirror which compose the external cavity. The effective coupling coefficient is also derived using the waveguide theory and Kirchhoff ’s theory. Finally, an unstable condition which may limit a stable wavelength tuning range is shown by results of a linear stability analysis of rate equations.  相似文献

We demonstrate a technique for single transverse mode operation of high-power broad area laser diode (BAL). In the experiment, the HR mirror is used as an external cavity mirror and the grating is used as a wavelength selective component. By tiling the HR mirror and the grating, the number of transverse modes oscillating in the cavity can be limited and the spectral bandwidth of the laser diode can be reduced. A single-lobed near diffraction-limited laser beam with the beam divergence (FWHM) of 0.43°, the spectral line-width of 0.7 nm and the output power of 350 mW are obtained. With the feedback, the power density of the output laser beam is increased 6 times in comparison with the free running.  相似文献

In this work we describe a simple external-cavity laser diode equipped with a feedback control system, in which a high-resolution position-sensitive detector detects the slight misalignment of the light within the cavity. Our system not only provides a stable wavelength that can be tuned within a maximum scanning range of 1.87 nm, but also allows for faster scanning, through precise control of the reflection angle within the cavity. The simultaneous controls on the rotation-angle of the external mirror and the injection current enabled us to realize continuous wavelength-tuning.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a measurement method that uses a laser diode (LD) attached to a flying slider and a semi-transparent rotating disk mirror for an extremely-short-external-cavity configuration. Not only the wavelength, but also the spectrum and the light output are measured at room temperature with the external cavity length, the reflectivities of the LD facets and the external mirror, and the drive current as parameters. We have confirmed wavelength variation as great as 30 nm by changing the external-cavity length for a 1.3-$mUm wavelength laser diode with an antireflection coating on the LD facet facing the external mirror.  相似文献

The mode-hop behavior and the power characteristics of a laser diode with wavelength-selective optical feedback are experimentally investigated. The feedback is provided by external volume holographic gratings, also called ‘Bragg mirrors’, at normal incidence. We demonstrate that a Bragg mirror forces a laser diode to operate only within a narrow wavelength range, and that the emission wavelength of the laser diode is stabilized against variations of the injection current. Moreover, we present periodic undulations of the power characteristics of the laser, depending on the driving current. They can be qualitatively explained with a simple model which takes into account that the threshold gain in the laser system strongly depends on the wavelength.  相似文献

We present two diode laser setups that employ volume holographic transmission gratings to provide optical feedback. The advantage of this kind of grating is high diffraction efficiency and the possibility to place optical elements on both sides of the grating. This allows for advanced external cavities and adjustable feedback efficiency. The first setup is a diode laser in the Littman configuration with the transmission grating replacing the conventional reflection grating. The second setup improves the frequency selectivity by substituting the feedback mirror with a passive resonator. This grating-enhanced external cavity diode laser (GECDL) achieves excellent frequency stability. A prototype of the GECDL setup demonstrates an intrinsic linewidth of 7 kHz and an operation range that covers the full amplification profile of the laser diode.  相似文献

Multi-path interference effects induced by optical feedback in broad-area semiconductor lasers is experimentally studied. An external mirror and an internal laser cavity form a closed composite optical feedback loop. For a very small tilt of the external mirror for the exit facet along the stripe width of the active layer, the light emitted from the laser undergoes multi-path reflections in the composite cavity, and we therefore observe multi-path interference effects of the laser oscillations for a small mirror tilt. The laser output power always shows the fundamental mode of the single feedback loop together with an oscillation of a certain higher multi-path loop. The laser oscillation and the beam profile are strongly dependent on the tilt. We observed up to a nine-fold multi-path interference in the experiment.  相似文献

In this letter, we demonstrate coherent beam combination of laser diode array using the external Talbot cavity with double feedback. The double feedback elements consist of grating and high-reflection plane mirror. Compared with single high-reflection plane mirror feedback, the external Talbot cavity with double feedback reduce the number of interference strips in the far-field pattern and narrow spectral line-width of the laser diode array. The results indicate that the application of the external Talbot cavity with double feedback produces a clear far-field interference pattern. In addition, line-width is reduced to 0.15 nm full-width at half-maximum (FWHM).  相似文献

An extremely short external cavity that is realized when a Fabry-Perot laser diode is butt coupled to a waveguide or a fiber produces feedback that is effective for controlled wavelength tuning. We used butt coupling to tune a high-output-power laser diode over a wide range (as great as 15 nm) while maintaining constant driving current and temperature. Single-mode or multimode operation repeatedly occurred at specific points throughout the tuning range. An analytical model that includes the effect of multiple reflections from the external cavity, each attenuated by a modal overlap integral, and which is based on phenomenological principles, shows good agreement with the experimental results.  相似文献

We have developed external cavity diode lasers, where the wavelength selection is assured by a low loss interference filter instead of the common diffraction grating. The filter allows a linear cavity design reducing the sensitivity of the wavelength and the external cavity feedback against misalignment. By separating the feedback and wavelength selection functions, both can be optimized independently leading to an increased tunability of the laser. The design is employed for the generation of laser light at 698, 780 and 852 nm. Its characteristics make it a well suited candidate for space-born lasers.  相似文献

 基于多波长光束组合技术,利用光栅的衍射和外腔的反馈,将二极管阵列的发光单元锁定在不同的波长上,相邻单元的出射光波长有微小的差异。从外腔耦合镜输出近似平行的光束,其光束质量等同于单个发光单元的光束质量,而组合光束亮度随着组合光束个数定标放大。实验中采用发光单元宽度为100 μm、填充因子为0.5、由49个单元构成的1 cm 阵列获得功率为2.39 W的输出光束,其光谱宽度为27 nm,远场光斑的直径为0.08 mm,对应的远场发散角为1.2 mrad,其光束质量因子约为28,与单个发光单元的光束质量相当。  相似文献

We present a systematic study of external optical feedback effects on the output characteristics of the two orthogonally polarized modes in a frequency locking dual frequency laser. Accompanied by the change of the external cavity length, the length of the resonance cavity is changed very slowly to set the oscillating modes sweeping across the laser gain curve. Comprehensive results are obtained and a strong mode competition is observed. Particularly, when the laser runs in the middle region of the gain curve, which mode can oscillate is determined by the movement direction of the external feedback mirror. Based on the phenomenon, a displacement sensor with directional discrimination is proposed and its capability is also discussed.  相似文献

An optimized dual fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed for 980-nm semiconductor lasers without thermoelectric coolers to restrict temperature-induced wavelength shift.The mathematical model of the temperature-induced wavelength shift of the laser with the dual FBG is built using the external cavity feedback rate equations.The external cavity parameters are optimized for achieving the stability mode-locking laser output.The spectral characteristics of the dual FBG stabilized laser are measured to range from 0 to 70 °C.The side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is more than 45 dB,while the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) is less than 1 nm.The peak wavelength shift is less than 0.1 nm.The dual FBG wavelength shift proportional coefficient is between 0.1086 and 0.4342.  相似文献

The optical feedback characteristics in a Zeeman-birefringence HeNe laser have been studied systematically when the external cavity varies in a large range. The intensity variations of the two orthogonally polarized lights are observed during the laser cavity tuning in the dual frequency laser. When the external cavity length is an integral multiple of the laser cavity length, either polarized light's intensity modulation depth varies not obviously when the laser works in dual modes conditions or single mode condition. But when the external cavity length is far away from an integral multiple of the laser cavity length and the laser works in different dual modes conditions, polarized light's intensity modulation depth varies obviously. This characteristic can guide us to tune the laser to work in single mode condition to improve the sensitivity of the optical system when the system is used for a large displacement measurement. It can also be used for measuring the position of the target mirror. The theoretical analysis is in good agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

 基于多波长光束组合技术,利用光栅的衍射和外腔的反馈,将激光二极管阵列(LDA)发光单元锁定在不同的波长上,以近似平行光束沿光栅的-1级衍射方向组合输出,改善LDA输出光束质量。实验采用发光单元宽度为100 μm、周期为500 μm,由19个单元构成的1 cm普通商用LDA,在连续运行最大注入电流60.6 A时,自由运转输出功率49.8 W时,获得功率为20.1 W的组合光束稳定输出,其光谱宽度为15 nm,对应的远场发散角由约70 mrad变为1.66 mrad,改善后光束质量因子约为32,其值与单个发光单元的光束质量相当。  相似文献

The characteristics of a wavelength tunable vertical cavity surface emitting laser diode (VCSEL) with an external short cavity are analyzed, in which the oscillation wavelength can be changed over several tens of nanometers with a nearly constant optical power by slightly altering the external cavity length. Analysis is based on rate equations for the optical power and carrier density, taking the effect of carrier-induced refractive index change into consideration, together with the study of behaviors of a complex resonator. The reflection coefficient r2 of a laser facet facing the external mirror is shown to affect notably the characteristics of wavelength tuning, optical power and carrier density for a change of the external cavity length. It is also noticed that the wavelength change for this length becomes slower with relatively larger r2 due to an increasing contribution of the effect of carrier-induced refractive index change, within the optical gain spectrum of the laser diode.  相似文献

We demonstrate a multiple wavelength Brillouin/erbium fiber laser in a linear cavity configuration.The laser cavity is made up of a fiber loop mirror on one end of the resonator and a virtual mirror generated from the distributed stimulated Brillouin scattering effect on the other end.Due to the weak reflectivity provided by the virtual mirror,self-lasing cavity modes are completely suppressed from the laser cavity.At Brillouin pump and 1480-nm pump powers of 2 and 130 mW,respectively,11 channels of the demonstrated laser with an average total power of 7.13 dBm can freely be tuned over a span of 37-nm wavelength from 1530 to 1567 nm.  相似文献

The possibility of switching an external mirror based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with a double feedback loop to a laser cavity is shown experimentally. A significant increase in the output laser power is obtained with conservation of the diffraction quality of the initial radiation. Experimental comparison with an ordinary SBS mirror, excited in a single pass through a nonlinear medium, is performed and the advantage in the energy parameters of the scheme with a double feedback loop is shown. The threshold characteristics of the SBS mirror under study are calculated and good agreement with the experimental data is obtained.  相似文献
