Mixed laminar convection in a vertical cylindrical vessel is investigated. A flow model is developed and the temperature distribution in the core is obtained for a given specific heat flux on the lateral surface. The results of the analytic simulation are compared with numerical solutions of the problem for a specific heat flux which is constant on the lateral wall or varies linearly with height. Moscow. Free convection heat transfer along an isothermal vertical wavy surface was studied experimentally and numerically. A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer was used in the experiment to determine the local heat transfer coefficients. Experiments were done for three different amplitude–wavelength ratios of α = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and the Rayleigh numbers ranging from Ra l = 2.9 × 105 to 5.8 × 105. A finite-volume based code was developed to verify the experimental study and obtain the results for all the amplitude–wavelength ratios between α = 0 to 0.2. It is found that the numerical results agree well with the experimental data. Results indicate that the frequency of the local heat transfer rate is the same as that of the wavy surface. The average heat transfer coefficient decreases as the amplitude–wavelength ratio increases and there is a significant difference between the average heat transfer coefficients of the surface with α = 0.2 and those surfaces with α = 0.05 and 0.1. The experimental data are correlated with a single equation which gives the local Nusselt number along the wavy surface as a function of the amplitude–wavelength ratio and the Rayleigh number.

The unsteady natural convection boundary layer flow over a semi-infinite vertical cylinder is considered with combined buoyancy force effects, for the situation in which the surface temperature T w(x) and C w(x) are subjected to the power-law surface heat and mass flux as K(T /r) = −ax n and D(C /r) = −bx m . The governing equations are solved by an implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson method. Numerical results are obtained for different values of Prandtl number, Schmidt number ‘n’ and ‘m’. The velocity, temperature and concentration profiles, local and average skin-friction, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are shown graphically. The local Nusselt and Sherwood number of the present study are compared with the available result and a good agreement is found to exist. Received on 7 July 1998  相似文献

Summary The fluctuating free convection flow along a semi-infinite vertical plate is considered when the plate temperature is of the form T p –T =(T 0 –T ) where 0 < 1, denotes the frequency of oscillation and the mean temperature T 0T is proportional to n (0 n < 1). Flow and temperature fields have been obtained by means of two asymptotic expansions. For small values of the frequency parameter , a regular expansion is obtained while for large the method of matched asymptotic expansion is used. It is found that the skin friction and the rate of heat transfer obtained from two expansions overlap satisfactorily for a certain value of . For n=1 the flow governing equations to a semisimilar form, and have been solved by finite difference method. The results obtained from the series and the finite difference methods are in good agreement.

Steady natural convection heat transfer in a two dimensional cavity filled with a uniform heat generating, saturated porous medium has been studied. The boundary conditions were: Two isothermal walls at different temperatures, two horizontal adiabatic walls. The aspect ratio was varied from 0.1 to 10 and the Rayleigh number from 100 to 108. The results are presented in terms of the isotherms and stream functions, the temperature variation and maximum temperature in the cavity and heat transfer from the vertical walls. The study indicates that asymmetric vertical boundary conditions with h >0 has an important effect on the temperature and flow fields as well as on the heat transfer characteristics of the cavity with highly asymmetric results. Various heat transfer modes are identified dependent on the Rayleigh number and the aspect ratio.

Experimental investigations have been reported on steady state natural convection from the outer surface of vertical rectangular and square ducts in air. Seven ducts have been used; three of them have a rectangular cross section and the rest have square cross section. The ducts are heated using internal constant heat flux heating elements. The temperatures along the vertical surface and the peripheral directions of the duct wall are measured. Axial (perimeter averaged) heat transfer coefficients along the side of each duct are obtained for laminar and transition to turbulent regimes of natural convection heat transfer. Axial (perimeter averaged) Nusselt numbers are evaluated and correlated using the modified Rayleigh numbers for laminar and transition regime using the vertical axial distance as a characteristic length. Critical values of the modified Rayleigh numbers are obtained for transition to turbulent. Furthermore, total overall averaged Nusselt numbers are correlated with the modified Rayleigh numbers and the area ratio for the laminar regimes. The local axial (perimeter averaged) heat transfer coefficients are observed to decrease in the laminar region and increase in the transition region. Laminar regimes are obtained at the lower half of the ducts and its chance to appear decreases as the heat flux increases.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the natural convection heat transfer characteristics of sinusoidal wavy surfaces on vertical plates maintained at a constant temperature. Local heat transfer coefficients were obtained with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The heat transfer from the wavy surfaces, compared to a plane plate of equal projected area, increased with increasing amplitude-to-wavelength ratio. The heat transfer was increased by about 15 percent at an amplitude-to-wavelength ratio of 0.3; for this case a flow instability was detected. A quantitative comparison with a previously published numerical investigation is also presented. In general, there is agreement between the two studies.

The flow and heat transfer in enclosures with conducting multiple partitions and side walls were numerically analyzed. Side walls were kept at isothermal conditions, while top and bottom walls were insulated. Employing control volume approach, a computer program based on SIMPLE algorithm was developed. Computations were carried out to investigate the effects of Rayleigh number, number of partitions and cavity aspect ratios on the heat transfer rate. The mean Nusselt numbers were calculated from computed temperature fields. It was observed that, the mean Nusselt number decreases with increasing partition number. It is inversely proportional to (1+N) for N≤4. For all partition numbers, the mean Nusselt number increases with increasing Rayleigh number. On the other hand, the cavity aspect ratio does not affect the mean Nusselt number to a considerable extent for considered aspect ratios in this study.

The effect of surface tension on laminar natural convection in a vertical cylindrical cavity filled with a weak evaporating liquid has been analyzed numerically. The cylindrical enclosure is insulated at the bottom, heated by a constant heat flux from the side, and cooled by a non-uniform evaporative heat flux from the top free surface having temperature-dependent surface tension. Governing equations with corresponding boundary conditions formulated in dimensionless stream function, vorticity, and temperature have been solved by finite difference method of the second-order accuracy. The influence of Rayleigh number, Marangoni number, and aspect ratio on the liquid flow and heat transfer has been studied. Obtained results have revealed that the heat transfer rate at free surface decreases with Marangoni number and increases with Rayleigh number, while the average temperature inside the cavity has an opposite behavior; namely, it growths with Marangoni number and reduces with Rayleigh number.

Conjugate free convection along a vertical cylindrical fin in a non-Newtonian fluid-saturated porous medium has been investigated theoretically. The boundary layer equations based on the power lay model appropriate for the Darcy flows are solved numerically exploiting a very efficient finite difference method. Effects of the power-law index, conjugate convection-conduction parameter and the surface curvature parameter on the fin temperature distribution, local heat transfer-coefficient and local heat flux are studied and presented in graphical and tabular form.

The natural convection heat transfer characteristics and mechanism for copper micro-wires in water and air were investigated experimentally and numerically. The wires with diameters of 39.9, 65.8 and 119.1 μm were placed horizontally in water inside of a sealed tube and in air of a large room, respectively. Using Joule heating, the heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt numbers of natural convection for micro-wires in ultra pure water and air were obtained. A three dimensional incompressible numerical model was used to investigate the natural convection, and the prediction with this model was in reasonable accordance with the experimental results. With the decrease of micro-wire diameter, the heat transfer coefficient of natural convection on the surface of micro-wire becomes larger, while the Nu number of natural convection decreases in water and air. Besides, the change rate of Nu number in water decreases apparently with the increase of heat flux and the decrease of wire diameter, which is larger than that in air. The thickness of boundary layer on the wall of micro-wire becomes thinner with the decrease of diameter in both water and air, but the ratio of boundary layer thickness in water to the diameter increases. However, there is almost no change of this ratio for natural convection in air. As a result, the proportion of conduction in total heat transfer of natural convection in water increases, while the convective heat transfer decreases. The velocity distribution, temperature field and the boundary layer in the natural convection were compared with those of tube with conventional dimension. It was found that the boundary layer around the micro-wire is an oval-shaped film on the surface, which was different from that around the conventional tube. This apparently reduces the convection strength in the natural convection, thus the heat transfer presents a conduction characteristic.

Magnetohydrodynamic natural convection heat transfer from radiate vertical surfaces with fluid suction or injection is considered. The nonsimilarity parameter is found to be the conductive fluid injection or suction along the streamwise coordinate = V{4x/2 g(T w T )}1/4. Three dimensionless parameters had been found to describe the problem: the magnetic influence number N = B 2 y /V 2, the radiation-conduction parameter R d = k R /4aT 3 , and the Gebhart number Ge x = gx/cp to represent the effect of the viscous dissipation. It is found that increasing the magnetic field strength causes the velocity and the heat transfer rates inside the boundary layer to decrease. Its apparent that increasing the radiation-conduction parameter decreases the velocity and enhances the heat transfer rates. The Gebhart number, i.e, the viscous dissipation had no effect on the present problem.Nomenclature a Stefan-Boltzmann constant - B y Magnetic field flux density Wb/m2 - Cf x Local skin friction factor - c p Specific heat capacity - f Dimensionless stream function - Ge x Gebhart number, gx/cp - g Gravitational acceleration - k Thermal Conductivity - L Length of the plate - N Magnetic influence number, B 2 y /V 2 - p Pressure - Pr Prandtl number - q r Radiative heat flux - q w (x) Local surface heat flux - Q w (x) Dimensionless Local surface heat flux - R d Planck number (Radiation-Conduction parameter), k R /4aT 3 - T Temperature - T Free stream temperature - T w Wall temperature - u, v Velocity components in x- and y-directions - V Porous wall suction or injection velocity - V w Porous wall suction or injection velocity - x, y Axial and normal coordinates - Thermal diffusivity Greek symbols R Roseland mean absorption coefficient, 4/3R d - Coefficient of thermal expansion - Nonsimilarity parameter, V{4x/2 g(T w T )}1/4 - Peseudo-similarity variable - Dimensionless temperature - w Ratio of surface temperature to the ambient temperature, T w /T - Dynamice viscosity - Kinemtic viscosity - Fluid density - Electrical conductivity - w Local wall shear stress - Dimensional stream function

The free convection flow along a vertical porous plate with transverse sinusoidal suction velocity distribution is investigated. Due to this type of suction velocity at the plate the flow becomes three dimensional one. For the asymptotic flow condition, the wall shear stress in the direction of main flow for different values of buoyancy parameter G is obtained. For G=0, the skin friction in the direction of free stream and the rate of heat transfer from the plate to the fluid are given. It is found that these results differ from those obtained by Gersten and Gross.

The equation which governs the similarity solution for free convection boundary-layer flow along a vertical permeable surface with prescribed surface heating and mass transfer rate is discussed. The solution is seen to depend on two non-dimensional parameters;m, the power-law exponent, and γ, the mass transfer parameter. It is shown that solutions exist for allm>?1 for γ>0 (fluid injection) whereas for γ<0 (fluid withdrawal), solution exist form>m 0(γ), wherem 0 is determined as a function of γ. Solutions for large mass transfer rates are obtained, for both γ>0 and γ<0. For γ>0 the form of the asymptotic solution for γ large is seen to depend on the value ofm. Solutions form large are derived, these are seen to be different depending on whether γ is positive or negative.

The steady state heat transfer characteristics of a thin vertical strip with internal heat generation placed in a porous medium is studied in this work. The non-dimensional temperature distribution in the strip is obtained as a function of the intensity and distribution of the internal heat sources. Both the thermally thin as the thick wall approximations are considered in this paper. The mass flow rate of fluid induced by heating the strip decreases as the longitudinal heat conduction effects along the strip decreases. Free convection along an impermeable vertical plate embedded in a thermally stratified, fluid-saturated porous medium is analyzed. The wall heat flux is varied in a power-law form. The non-Darcian effects, such as solid-boundary viscous resistances, high-flow-rate inertia forces, near wall nonuniform porosity distribution and thermal dispersion, have been considered in the present study. Due to the variation of porosity in the near wall region, the stagnant thermal conductivity also varies accordingly. The nonsimilar system of transformed equations is solved with Keller's Box method. It is shown that the thermal stratification effect and the higher value of the exponent m can increase the local Nusselt number. Also the non-Darcian and thermal dispersion effects significantly influence the velocity and temperature profiles and local Nusselt number.
