We consider the problem of maximizing a linear fractional function on the Pareto efficient frontier of two other linear fractional functions. We present a finite pivoting-type algorithm that solves the maximization problem while computing simultaneously the efficient frontier. Application to multistage efficiency analysis is discussed. Various difficulties have been encountered in using decision set-based vector maximization methods to solve a multiple-objective linear programming problem (MOLP). Motivated by these difficulties, Benson recently developed a finite, outer-approximation algorithm for generating the set of all efficient extreme points in the outcome set, rather than in the decision set, of problem (MOLP). In this article, we show that the Benson algorithm also generates the set of all weakly efficient points in the outcome set of problem (MOLP). As a result, the usefulness of the algorithm as a decision aid in multiple objective linear programming is further enhanced.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider an insurance company which has the option of investing in a risky asset and a risk-free asset, whose price parameters are driven by a finite state Markov chain. The risk process of the insurance company is modeled as a diffusion process whose diffusion and drift parameters switch over time according to the same Markov chain. We study the Markov-modulated mean-variance problem for the insurer and derive explicitly the closed form of the efficient strategy and efficient frontier. In the case of no regime switching, we can see that the efficient frontier in our paper coincides with that of [10] when there is no pure jump.  相似文献

This paper suggests a method for finding efficient hyperplanes with variable returns to scale the technology in data envelopment analysis (DEA) by using the multiple objective linear programming (MOLP) structure. By presenting an MOLP problem for finding the gradient of efficient hyperplanes, We characterize the efficient faces. Thus, without finding the extreme efficient points of the MOLP problem and only by identifying the efficient faces of the MOLP problem, we characterize the efficient hyperplanes which make up the DEA efficient frontier. Finally, we provide an algorithm for finding the efficient supporting hyperplanes and efficient defining hyperplanes, which uses only one linear programming problem.  相似文献

This paper extends the works by Olesen and Petersen (2003), Russell and Schworm (2006) and Cooper et al. (2007) about describing the efficient frontier of a production possibility set by the intersection of a finite number of closed halfspaces, in several ways. First, we decompose the efficient frontier into a smallest number of convex polyhedrons, or equivalently into a new class of efficient faces, called maximal efficient faces (MEFs). Second, we show how to identify all MEFs even if full dimensional efficient faces do not exist. Third, by applying the MEF decomposition to various real-world data sets, we demonstrate the validity of the MEF decomposition and how it can contribute to the DEA literature. Finally, we illustrate how to use the identified MEFs in practice.  相似文献

Finding an efficient or weakly efficient solution in a multiobjective linear programming (MOLP) problem is not a difficult task. The difficulty lies in finding all these solutions and representing their structures. Since there are many convenient approaches that obtain all of the (weakly) efficient extreme points and (weakly) efficient extreme rays in an MOLP, this paper develops an algorithm which effectively finds all of the (weakly) efficient maximal faces in an MOLP using all of the (weakly) efficient extreme points and extreme rays. The proposed algorithm avoids the degeneration problem, which is the major problem of the most of previous algorithms and gives an explicit structure for maximal efficient (weak efficient) faces. Consequently, it gives a convenient representation of efficient (weak efficient) set using maximal efficient (weak efficient) faces. The proposed algorithm is based on two facts. Firstly, the efficiency and weak efficiency property of a face is determined using a relative interior point of it. Secondly, the relative interior point is achieved using some affine independent points. Indeed, the affine independent property enable us to obtain an efficient relative interior point rapidly.  相似文献

The problem (P) of optimizing a linear function over the efficient set of a multiple objective linear program has many important applications in multiple criteria decision making. Since the efficient set is in general a nonconvex set, problem (P) can be classified as a global optimization problem. Perhaps due to its inherent difficulty, it appears that no precisely-delineated implementable algorithm exists for solving problem (P) globally. In this paper a relaxation algorithm is presented for finding a globally optimal solution for problem (P). The algorithm finds an exact optimal solution to the problem after a finite number of iterations. A detailed discussion is included of how to implement the algorithm using only linear programming methods. An equivalence is demonstrated between solving a linear complementarity problem with general data and finding a certain subset of the efficient points of a multiple objective programming problem. This paper looks at the task of computing efficient extreme points in multiple objective linear programming. Vector maximization software is reviewed and the ADBASE solver for computing all efficient extreme points of a multiple objective linear program is described. To create MOLP test problems, models for random problem generation are discussed. In the computational part of the paper, the numbers of efficient extreme points possessed by MOLPs (including multiple objective transportation problems) of different sizes are reported. In addition, the way the utility values of the efficient extreme points might be distributed over the efficient set for different types of utility functions is investigated. Not surprisingly, results show that it should be easier to find good near-optimal solutions with linear utility functions than with, for instance, Tchebycheff types of utility functions.Dedicated to Professor George B. This paper develops a method for finding the whole set of efficient points of a multiobjective linear problem. Two algorithms are presented; the first one describes the set of all efficient vertices and all efficient rays of the constraint polyhedron, while the second one generates the set of all efficient faces. In a multi-objective linear fractional programming problem (MOLFPP), it is often useful to check the efficiency of a given feasible solution, and if the solution is efficient, it is useful to check strong or weak efficiency. In this paper, by applying a geometrical interpretation, a linear programming approach is achieved to test weak efficiency. Recent literature on sustainable logistics networks points to two important questions: (i) How to spot the preferred solution(s) balancing environmental and business concerns? (ii) How to improve the understanding of the trade-offs between these two dimensions? We posit that a visual exploration of the efficient frontier and trade-offs between profitability and environmental impacts are particularly suitable to answer these two questions. The visual representation of the efficient frontier, however, presents two challenges. The first is to obtain a good approximation for such frontier without enumerating all extreme efficient solutions. The second is to obtain a good visual representation of the efficient frontier. We propose a two-phased heuristic to handle these two problems. The algorithm is designed for the multi-objective linear problem with three objectives: minimize costs, cumulative energy demand and waste in a reverse logistics network. We illustrate our approach by designing a complex recycling logistics network in Germany.  相似文献

In a recent paper by Li (Ref. 1), a scheme was proposed to convexify an efficient frontier for a vector optimization problem by rescaling each component of the vector objective functions by its p-power. For sufficiently large p, it was shown that the transformed efficient frontier is cone-convex; hence, the usual linear scalarization (or supporting hyperplane) method can be used to find the efficient solutions. An outstanding question remains: What is the minimum value of p such that the efficient frontier can be convexified? In this note, we answer the above question by deriving some theoretical lower bounds for p.

The problem (P) of optimizing a linear function over the efficient set of a multiple-objective linear program serves many useful purposes in multiple-criteria decision making. Mathematically, problem (P) can be classified as a global optimization problem. Such problems are much more difficult to solve than convex programming problems. In this paper, a nonadjacent extreme-point search algorithm is presented for finding a globally optimal solution for problem (P). The algorithm finds an exact extreme-point optimal solution for the problem after a finite number of iterations. It can be implemented using only linear programming methods. Various difficulties arise in using decision set-based vector maximization methods to solve a multiple-objective linear programming problem (MOLP). Motivated by these difficulties, some researchers in recent years have begun to develop tools for analyzing and solving problem (MOLP) in outcome space, rather than in decision space. In this article, we present and validate a new hybrid vector maximization approach for solving problem (MOLP) in outcome space. The approach systematically integrates a simplicial partitioning technique into an outer approximation procedure to yield an algorithm that generates the set of all efficient extreme points in the outcome set of problem (MOLP) in a finite number of iterations.
