The coordination structures of U(IV), Np(IV), and Th(IV) in aqueous solution have been determined by studying the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) of the actinide (An) L(3)-edge absorption spectra. The high sensitivity of XANES to the bonding geometry provides an unambiguous determination of the coordination polyhedron. On the basis of the comparison of ab initio computations with the experimental data we conclude that the hydration sphere of the three An(IV) aqua-ions studied is best modeled by 9 water molecules forming a tricapped trigonal prism.  相似文献

Electrochemical and complexation properties of neptunium (Np) are investigated in aqueous perchlorate and nitrate solutions by means of cyclic voltammetry, bulk electrolysis, UV-visible absorption, and Np L(III)-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The redox reactions of Np(III)/Np(IV) and Np(V)/Np(VI) couples are reversible or quasi-reversible, while the electrochemical reaction between Np(III/IV) and Np(V/VI) is irreversible because they undergo structural rearrangement from spherical coordinating ions (Np(3+) and Np(4+)) to transdioxoneptunyl ions (NpO2(n+), n = 1 for Np(V) and 2 for Np(VI)). The redox reaction of the Np(V)/Np(VI) couple involves no structural rearrangement on their equatorial planes in acidic perchlorate and nitrate solutions. A detailed analysis on extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra suggests that Np(IV) forms a decaaquo complex of [Np(H2O)10](4+) in 1.0 M HClO4, while Np(V) and Np(VI) exist dominantly as pentaaquoneptunyl complexes, [NpO2(H2O)5](n+) (n = 1 for Np(V) and 2 for Np(VI)). A systematic change is observed on the Fourier transforms of the EXAFS spectra for all of the Np oxidation states as the nitrate concentration is increased in the sample, revealing that the hydrate water molecules are replaced by bidentate-coordinating nitrate ions on the primary coordination sphere of Np.  相似文献

Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to determine the chemical speciation of Np sorbed on Opalinus Clay (OPA, Mont Terri, Switzerland), a natural argillaceous rock revealing a micro-scale heterogeneity. Different sorption and diffusion samples with Np(V) were prepared for spatially resolved molecular-level investigations. Thin sections of OPA contacted with Np(V) solution under aerobic and anaerobic conditions as well as a diffusion sample were analysed spatially resolved. Micro-X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) mapping has been used to determine the elemental distributions of Np, Fe and Ca. Regions of high Np concentration were subsequently investigated by micro-X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy to determine the oxidation state of Np. Further, micro-X-ray diffraction (μ-XRD) was employed to gain knowledge about reactive crystalline mineral phases in the vicinity of Np enrichments. One thin section was also analysed by electron microprobe to determine the elemental distributions of the lighter elements (especially Si and Al), which represent the main elements of OPA. The results show that in most samples, Np spots with considerable amounts of Np(IV) could be found even when the experiments were carried out in air. In some cases, almost pure Np(IV) L(III)-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra were recorded. In the case of the anaerobic sample, the μ-XRF mapping showed a clear correlation between Np and Fe, indicating that the reduction of Np(V) is caused by an iron(II)-containing mineral which could be identified by μ-XRD as pyrite. These spatially resolved investigations were complemented by extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements of powder samples from batch experiments under aerobic and anaerobic conditions to determine the structural parameters of the near-neighbour environment of sorbed Np.  相似文献

The oxidation-induced structural change of a water-oxidizing diruthenium complex, [(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)Ru(III)(micro-O)Ru(III)(OH(2))(bpy)(2)](4+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), was investigated by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Ru K-edge XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) spectra from the acidic solution and solid precipitates obtained by oxidation showed that the absorption edge shifts toward higher energy with a preedge feature slightly more enhanced than those of the lower oxidation states. This indicates that the higher oxidation state has a lower symmetry due to shortening of the Ru-O bonds that originated from the water ligands. The EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) spectra were similar to those of the lower oxidation states, whose analysis revealed the existence of short Ru-O double bonds and an almost linear Ru-O-Ru angle (169 +/- 2 degrees ). Ab initio EXAFS simulations for several possible structural models suggest that the dimeric structure is maintained during the water oxidation reaction.  相似文献

A freshly prepared solution of Pu(VI) in 2 M NaOH was oxidized to Pu(VII), via ozonolysis, while simultaneously collecting X-ray absorption spectra. Analyses of the XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) data, acquired throughout the in situ experiments, show a dioxo coordination environment for Pu(VI), PuO(2)(2+), typical for it and the hexavalent actinyl species of U and Np, and its evolution into a tetraoxo-coordination environment for Pu(VII), PuO(4)(-), like that known for Np(VII). The EXAFS data provide average Pu-O distances of 1.79(1) and 1.88(1) ?, respectively. The second coordination shells, also fit as O atoms, provide Pu-O distances of 2.29-2.32 ? that are independent of the Pu oxidation state. The coordination numbers for the distant O atoms in sums with those for the nearest O atoms are consistent with 6-O environments for both Pu(VI) and Pu(VII) ions in accordance with their previously proposed speciation as [Pu(VI)O(2)(OH)(4)](2-) and [Pu(VII)O(4)(OH)(2)](3-), respectively. This solution speciation accounts precisely for the Pu(VI) and Pu(VII) coordination environments reported in various solid state structures. The Pu(VII) tetraoxo-dihydroxo anion was found to have a half-life of 3.7 h. Its instability is attributed to spontaneous reduction to Pu(VI) and not to a measurable extent of disproportionation. We found no direct evidence for Pu(VIII) in the X-ray data and, furthermore, the stoichiometry of the oxidation of Cr(III) by Pu is consistent with that expected for a valence-pure Pu(VII) preparation by ozonation and, in turn, stoichiometrically equivalent to the established Np(VII)/Cr(III) redox reaction.  相似文献

SiO(2)-supported clusters of tantalum were synthesized from adsorbed Ta(CH(2)Ph)(5) by treatment in H(2) at 523 K. The surface species were characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES)) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The EXAFS data show that SiO(2)-supported tantalum clusters were characterized by a Ta-Ta coordination number of approximately 2, consistent with the presence of tritantalum clusters, on average. When these were reduced in H(2) and reoxidized in O(2), the cluster nuclearity remained essentially unchanged, although reduction and oxidation occurred, respectively, as shown by XANES and UV-vis spectra; in the reoxidation, the tantalum oxidation state change was approximately two electronic charges per tritantalum cluster. The data demonstrate an analogy between the chemistry of group 5 metals on the SiO(2) support and their chemistry in solution, as determined by the group of Cotton.  相似文献

The present work describes the first structural studies of protactinium(V) in sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid media using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results show unambiguously the absence of the trans-dioxo bond that characterizes the other early actinide elements such as U and Np. In concentrated sulfuric acid (13 M), Pa(V) is proved to exhibit a single oxo bond as postulated in the literature for species in more dilute media. In a 0.5 M HF medium, XANES and EXAFS spectra indicate the absence of any oxo bond: Pa(V) exists in the form of a pure fluoro complex.  相似文献

High-pressure in situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data are reported during the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in supercritical carbon dioxide over a Pd/Al(2)O(3) catalyst (shell impregnated). For this purpose, a continuous-flow system with a spectroscopic cell suitable for in situ X-ray absorption studies on heterogeneous catalysts up to 200 degrees C and 200 bar has been developed. Due to the high contribution of the dense fluid to the overall X-ray absorption, high stability of the process pressure is mandatory, particularly when recording EXAFS spectra. According to EXAFS and XANES results, the palladium particles were fully reduced after exposure to benzyl alcohol in scCO(2). In contrast to Pd-catalyzed liquid-phase oxidation, a higher oxygen tolerance of the catalyst was observed. Palladium was partially oxidized on the surface under typical reaction conditions (0.9 mol % benzyl alcohol/0.5 mol % O(2) in carbon dioxide), which gradually increased when the concentration of oxygen in the feed was raised. Both XANES and EXAFS data uncovered that palladium is mainly oxidized on the surface or within the outermost layers. These results are in accordance with simulations of the XANES data using the FEFF8.20 code (program for ab initio calculations on multiple scattering XAS) and EXAFS data fitting/simulation.  相似文献

X-ray absorption spectroscopic measurements have been used to compare the electronic structures of swift heavy ions (100 MeV Si ions) irradiated and pristine Ni-Al nanocrystalline films. Results from X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra at Al K-, and Ni L(2,3)-edges and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at Ni K-edges are discussed. The observed XRD peaks indicate the improvement of crystalline nature and Al(111) clustering after the swift heavy ion interactions. While the XANES spectra at Ni L(2,3)-edges show decrease in the intensity of white line strength, the Al K-edge shows increase in intensity after irradiation. Above results imply that swift heavy ions induce low Z (i.e., Al) ion mass transport, changes in Al sp-Ni-d hybridization, and charge transfer. EXAFS results show that crystalline nature is improved after swift heavy irradiation which is consistent with XRD results.  相似文献

Drinking-water treatment residuals (WTRs) present a low-cost geosorbent for As-contaminated waters and soils. Previous work has demonstrated the high affinity of WTRs for As, but data pertaining to the stability of sorbed As is missing. Sorption/desorption and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), both XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) studies, were combined to determine the stability of As sorbed by an Fe-based WTR. Arsenic(V) and As(III) sorption kinetics were biphasic in nature, sorbing >90% of the initial added As (15,000 mg kg(-1)) after 48 h of reaction. Subsequent desorption experiments with a high P load (7500 mg kg(-1)) showed negligible As desorption for both As species, approximately <3.5% of sorbed As; the small amount of desorbed As was attributed to the abundance of sorption sites. XANES data showed that sorption kinetics for either As(III) or As(V) initially added to solution had no effect on the sorbed As oxidation state. EXAFS spectroscopy suggested that As added either as As(III) or as As(V) formed inner-sphere mononuclear, bidentate complexes, suggesting the stability of the sorbed As, which was further corroborated by the minimum As desorption from the Fe-WTR.  相似文献

Extended X–ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X–ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra of a Si wafer are measured using grazing incidence X–rays. The spectra are measured using the total electron yield method. Fourier transform of the measured EXAFS oscillation is compared among different glancing angles. It is concluded that the XANES spectra are more sensitive to the surface Si–O bond than the EXAFS spectra. The source of probing depth difference of XAFS spectroscopy estimated by different researchers are discussed.  相似文献

The adsorption of atomic oxygen and hydroxide on a platinum electrode in 0.1 M HClO4 or H2SO4 electrolytes was studied in situ with Pt L(2,3) X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES). The Pt L3 edge absorption data, mu, were collected at room temperature in transmission mode on beamline X-11A at the National Synchrotron Light Source using a custom built cell. The Pt electrode was formed of highly dispersed 1.5-3 nm particles supported on carbon. A novel difference procedure (delta mu = mu(O[H]/Pt) - mu(Pt)) utilizing the L3 XANES spectra at different applied voltages was used to isolate the effects of O[H] (O or OH) adsorption in the XANES spectra. The Deltamu results are compared with results obtained from real-space full-multiple scattering calculations utilizing the FEFF8 code on model clusters. The experimental results, when compared with theoretical calculations, allow the adsorption site to be identified. At low coverages OH adsorbs primarily in 1-fold coordinated atop sites. As the coverage increases, O binds in the bridge/fcc sites, and at still higher coverages above 1.05 V RHE, O adsorbs into a higher coordinated n-fold or subsurface site, which is thought to be the result of Pt-O site exchange and oxide formation. These results are similar to those found in the gas phase. Direct specific adsorption of bisulfate anions in H2SO4 is spectroscopically seen in both the EXAFS and XANES data and is seen to impede oxygen adsorption consistent with previous reports.  相似文献

The solvation structure of Cu(2+) in methanol (MeOH) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been determined by studying both the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) regions of the K-edge absorption spectra. The EXAFS technique has been found to provide a very accurate determination of the next-neighbor coordination distances, but it is inconclusive in the determination of the coordination numbers and polyhedral environment. Conversely, quantitative analysis of the XANES spectra unambiguously shows the presence of an average 5-fold coordination in both the MeOH and DMSO solution, ruling out the usually proposed octahedral Jahn-Teller distorted geometry. The EXAFS and XANES techniques provide coherent values of the Cu-O first-shell distances that are coincident in the two solvents. This investigation shows that the combined analysis of the EXAFS and XANES data allows a reliable determination of the structural properties of electrolyte solutions, which is very difficult to achieve with other experimental techniques.  相似文献

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of Cr(3+) and Rh(3+) in aqueous solution are analyzed and compared with computed spectra derived from structural results obtained by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. This procedure quantifies the reliability of the EXAFS structural determination when applied to ions in solution. It provides guidelines for interpreting experimental spectra of octahedrally coordinated metal cations in aqueous solution. A set of relationships among Debye-Waller factors is proposed on the basis of MD results to reduce the number of independent fit parameters. The determination of the second hydration shell is examined. Calculated XANES spectra compare well with experimental ones. Indeed, the splitting observed on the main peak of the Rh K-edge was anticipated by the calculations. Simulated spectra from MD structures of increasing cluster size show a relationship between the second hydration shell and features of the XANES region at energies just above the edge. The combination of quantum and statistical calculations with the XANES spectrum is found to be very fruitful to get insight into the quantitative estimation of structural properties of electrolyte solutions.  相似文献

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) techniques, in combination with (13)C-NMR spectroscopy, have been used to study the complexation of methyl acrylate (1), N-acryloylbenzylamine (2), O-acryloyl-(R)-pantolactone (3), methyl N-acryloyl-(S)-prolinate (4), and methyl N-acryloyl-(S)-phenylalaninate (5) with excess TiCl(4) in solution. The results obtained show that TiCl(4) has a great tendency to coordinate with two ester ligands, but this tendency is not so marked with amides, which is related to the greater basicity of the latter. Complexation increases the Ti-Cl bond distance, in comparison with TiCl(4), which is clearly shown by the EXAFS spectra. Chelate complexes are formed with bidentate ligands, but comparison between the EXAFS spectra, obtained with different TiCl(4)/dienophile ratios, shows that chelation is more difficult with methyl N-acryloyl-(S)-phenylalaninate (5).  相似文献

The structural and physicochemical properties of the manganese-corrolazine (Cz) complexes (TBP8Cz)Mn(V)O (1) and (TBP8Cz)Mn(III) (2) (TBP = p-tert-butylphenyl) have been determined. Recrystallization of 2 from toluene/MeOH resulted in the crystal structure of (TBP8Cz)Mn(III)(CH3OH) (2 x MeOH). The packing diagram of 2 x MeOH reveals hydrogen bonds between MeOH axial ligands and meso N atoms of adjacent molecules. Solution binding studies of 2 with different axial ligands (Cl-, Et3PO, and Ph3PO) reveal strong binding, corroborating the preference of the Mn(III) ion for a five-coordinate environment. High-frequency and field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy of solid 2 x MeOH shows that 2 x MeOH is best described as a high-spin (S = 2) Mn(III) complex with zero-field splitting parameters typical of corroles. Structural information on 1 was obtained through an X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES)/extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) study and compared to XANES/EXAFS data for 2 x MeOH. The XANES data for 1 shows an intense pre-edge transition characteristic of a high-valent metal-oxo species, and a best fit of the EXAFS data gives a short Mn-O bond distance of 1.56 A, confirming the structure of the metal-oxo unit in 1. Detailed spectroelectrochemical studies of 1 and 2 were performed revealing multiple reversible redox processes for both complexes, including a relatively low potential for the Mn(V) --> Mn(IV) process in 1 (near 0.0 V vs saturated calomel reference electrode). Chemical reduction of 1 results in the formation of a Mn(III)Mn(IV)(mu-O) dimer as characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.  相似文献

A series of FeCo-SiO(2) nanocomposite aerogels having different FeCo loadings of 3, 5, and 8 wt % were prepared using a novel urea-assisted sol-gel route. The size of the nanoparticles, which was estimated using Scherrer analysis of the main peak of the x-ray diffraction pattern, varies from 3 to 8 nm. X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) techniques at both Fe and Co K edges were used to investigate the structure of the FeCo nanoparticles. EXAFS and XANES show that FeCo nanoparticles have the typical bcc structure. Evidence of oxidation was observed in low FeCo content aerogels. Spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis suggests the formation of a passivation layer of predominantly iron oxide.  相似文献

The structure of the active complex in the Ni-catalyzed polymerization of isocyanides to give polyisocyanides is investigated. It is shown by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), including EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) and XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, to contain a carbene-like ligand. This is the first structural characterization of a crucial intermediate in the so-called merry-go-round mechanism for Ni-catalyzed isocyanide polymerization.  相似文献

A room temperature solid-state structural transformation was observed in 3 nm ZnS nanoparticles in methanol following the addition of water (Zhang et al., Nature 424, 1025, 2003). Experimental wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS), x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy measurements show a large increase in crystallinity associated with water addition, in agreement with molecular dynamics (MD) predictions. Here we perform first-shell EXAFS and pair distribution function analysis and whole-nanoparticle calculations of WAXS, EXAFS and XANES to compare structural data with the MD predictions. The predicted WAXS patterns give excellent agreement with data, while the predicted EXAFS and XANES spectra give poor agreement. Relative to WAXS, XANES and EXAFS spectra contain additional structural information related to the distribution of disorder. The discrepancy between the x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption results indicates that structural disorder is partitioned between interior and surface regions more strongly than predicted in the MD simulations.  相似文献
