Changes in the surface of an oxidized Cu(1 0 0) single crystal resulting from vacuum annealing have been investigated using positron annihilation induced Auger electron spectroscopy (PAES). PAES measurements show a large increase in the intensity of the annihilation induced Cu M2,3VV Auger peak as the sample is subjected to a series of isochronal anneals in vacuum up to annealing temperature 300 °C. The intensity then decreases monotonically as the annealing temperature is increased to ∼600 °C. Experimental probabilities of annihilation of surface-trapped positrons with Cu 3p and O 1s core-level electrons are estimated from the measured intensities of the positron annihilation induced Cu M2,3VV and O KLL Auger transitions. Experimental PAES results are analyzed by performing calculations of positron surface states and annihilation probabilities of surface-trapped positrons with relevant core electrons taking into account the charge redistribution at the surface, surface reconstructions, and electron-positron correlations effects. The effects of oxygen adsorption on localization of positron surface state wave function and annihilation characteristics are also analyzed. Possible explanation is proposed for the observed behavior of the intensity of positron annihilation induced Cu M2,3VV and O KLL Auger peaks and probabilities of annihilation of surface-trapped positrons with Cu 3p and O 1s core-level electrons with changes of the annealing temperature. 相似文献

The crystalline structure of Co layers deposited on the Cu(0 0 1) surface was investigated with the use of the directional elastic peak electron spectroscopy (DEPES). For clean Cu(0 0 1) the experimental DEPES profiles obtained for different energies of the primary electron beam exhibit intensity maxima corresponding to the close packed rows of atoms. The Auger peak kinetics recorded during continuous Co deposition suggest the layer-by-layer growth mode. The DEPES profiles recorded for 10 monolayers (ML) of Co on Cu(0 0 1) reflect a short-range order in the adsorbate. Intensity maxima observed in the DEPES profiles for Co along [1 0 0], [0 1 0], and [1 1 0] azimuths of Cu(0 0 1) are characteristic of the face centered cubic (fcc) Co(0 0 1) layers. Low-intensity reflections and considerable background intensities were found in the low energy electron diffraction (LEED) patterns recorded from 10 ML of Co, which indicates a weak long-range order in the adsorbate. The adsorption of about 20 ML of Co results in considerable background contribution to DEPES. No reflections but a large background were observed with the use of LEED for this layer. The heating of the Co/Cu(0 0 1) system at T = 770 K leads to an increase of the short- and long-range order in the overlayer, observed in the DEPES profiles and LEED patterns, respectively. The theoretical DEPES profiles were obtained with the use of a multiple scattering approximation. A very good agreement between experimental and theoretical scans was found for the clean and covered copper substrate. The latter proves the epitaxial growth of Co layers on Cu(0 0 1). 相似文献

We have traced the development of the Ni electronic structure with thickness variation on flat and nano-structured Cu(0 0 1) surfaces by means of photoemission spectroscopy. The binding energy of the Ni 2p3/2 main peak and satellite peak is found to have shifted monotonically in the direction opposite to each other, with the increase of Ni coverage. The reduced binding energy of the thin film’s main peak is strongly correlated to the Cu 4s/Ni 3d interfacial hybridization effect (s/d IHE) and the narrowing of the d band with the reduction of dimensions, while the increased satellite binding energy results from the combination of interface hybridization and expansion of an extended 4s-like state towards the vacuum. The center of the Ni dxy band is predicted to shift closer to the Fermi level with increasing film thickness. Enhanced satellite intensity in thin films is observed, correlating to the narrowing of the d band with decreased film thickness. Through comparison of Ni films grown on flat versus nano-structured Cu(0 0 1) surfaces, the mixing of Cu and Ni atoms is found to be enhanced at the terrace edge region and consequently a larger s/d IHE is predicted for Ni on the nano-structured surface. 相似文献

Several surface analysis techniques were combined to study the initial stages of oxidation of Cu(1 1 1) surfaces exposed to O2 at low pressure (<5 × 10−6 mbar) and room temperature. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results show that the reactivity is governed by the restructuring of the Cu(1 1 1) surface. On the terraces, oxygen dissociative adsorption leads to the formation of isolated O adatoms and clusters weakly bound to the surface. The O adatoms are located in the fcc threefold hollow sites of the unrestructured terraces. Friedel oscillations with an amplitude lower than 5 pm have been measured around the adatoms. At step edges, surface restructuring is initiated and leads to the nucleation and growth of a two-dimensional disordered layer of oxide precursor. The electronic structure of this oxide layer is characterised by a band gap measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy to be ∼1.5 eV wide. The growth of the oxide islands progresses by consumption of the upper metal terraces to form triangular indents. The extraction of the Cu atoms at this interface generates a preferential orientation of the interface along the close-packed directions of the metal. A second growth front corresponds to the step edges of the oxide islands and progresses above the lower metal terraces. This is where the excess Cu atoms extracted at the first growth front are incorporated. STM shows that the growing disordered oxide layer consists of units of hexagonal structure with a first nearest neighbour distance characteristic of a relaxed Cu-Cu distance (∼0.3 nm), consistent with local Cu2O(1 1 1)-like elements. Exposure at 300 °C is necessary to form an ordered two-dimensional layer of oxide precursor. It forms the so-called “29” superstructure assigned to a periodic distorted Cu2O(1 1 1)-like structure. 相似文献

The reactivity of clean and pre-oxidised Cu(1 1 1) surfaces exposed to sulphur (H2S) has been studied at room temperature by Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. On the clean surface, the sulphur-saturated surface structure is dominated by the or so-called “zigzag” superstructure. It is shown that a single orientation domain is favoured by the slight misorientation (∼2°) of the surface with respect to the (1 1 1) plane. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements also revealed two minority structures. Pre-oxidation was performed by exposure to 1.5 × 104 L of O2 at 300 °C. Under exposure to H2S (1 × 10−7 mbar) at room temperature, the oxygen is totally substituted by sulphur. Once initiated, sulphur adsorption seems to propagate to cover the whole surface on the O-covered surface faster than on the clean Cu(1 1 1). At saturation by adsorbed sulphur, the surface is completely covered by the superstructure of highest coverage. This enhanced uptake of sulphur is assigned to the surface reconstruction of the copper surface induced by the pre-oxidation, causing a stronger reactivity of the Cu atoms released by the decomposition of the oxide. 相似文献

We have studied the reaction of ultrathin In overlayers on W(1 1 0) with molecular oxygen at 300 K. At a coverage of 0.25 monolayers (ML) oxygen first chemisorbs dissociatively at free tungsten sites and oxidation of In occurs with some delay. At an In coverage of 1.2 ML complete oxidation of the closed overlayer is observed. Layers of 3 ML thickness first show rapid transformation from In to an In2O3-like species until an oxide monolayer is formed. Further oxidation occurs at much reduced rate. No oxygen-induced restructuring is observed for In at 300 K, in contrast to the response of Ag monolayers deposited on W(1 1 0). 相似文献

Exploring ways for self-organized structuring of insulating thin films, we investigated the possibility to produce replicas of step trains, given by a vicinal Si(0 0 1)-4°[1 1 0] surface, in layers of crystalline and perfectly lattice-matched Ba0.7Sr0.3O. For this purpose, we carried out high-resolution spot profile analyses in low-energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED) both on flat Si(0 0 1) and on Si(0 0 1)-4°[1 1 0]. Oxide layers were generated by evaporating the metals in oxygen ambient pressure with the sample at room temperature. Our G(S) analysis of these mixed oxide layers reveals a strong influence of local compositional fluctuations of Sr and Ba ions and their respective scattering phases, which appears as an unphysically large variation of layer distances. Nevertheless, we are able to show that quite smooth and closed oxide films are obtained with an rms roughness of about 1 ML. These Ba0.7Sr0.3O films directly follow the step train of Sr-modified vicinal Si surfaces that form (1 1 3) oriented facets after adsorption of a monolayer of Sr. This proves that self-organized structuring of insulating films can indeed be an effective method. 相似文献

Acetonitrile (CH3CN) adsorbs on Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 at room temperature under two forms, a cycloaddition-like adduct (Si-CN-Si) and a pendent cyano (Si-CH2-CN) resulting from the decomposition of the molecule. Resonant Auger spectroscopy has been used to study the excited-state-dependent electron transfer from the N 1s core-excited molecular adsorbate to the silicon substrate, using the core-hole lifetime (∼6 fs) as an internal clock. It is shown that the πCN∗ NEXAFS state lies within the silicon bandgap because of a core-excitonic effect. Therefore no charge transfer of the excited electron to the substrate is observed. On the other hand the πCN∗ NEXAFS state is placed within the silicon conduction band. Excitation to this orbital leads to valence/Auger spectra in which both resonant and normal Auger contributions are observed. Therefore there is evidence for a charge transfer from the pendent CN to the silicon surface, on a timescale estimated to tens of femtoseconds. 相似文献

Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) were applied to investigate the segregation of aluminum atoms on a Cu-9 at.% Al(1 1 1) surface. We observed that the Al concentration in the top layer ranged between about 9 and 36 at.% after the sample we used was annealed at different temperatures. The phenomenon of Al atoms segregating on the surfaces was explained well by considering the diffusion length of Al atoms in bulk Cu. LEED measurements showed that R30° structures grew as the concentration of Al atoms increased. The segregation phenomena on surfaces resulted in a stable two-dimensional Cu67Al33 alloy phase in the top layer. 相似文献

The impingement and interdiffusion of adsorbed Pb and Bi layers spreading from separated 3D pure bulk sources on Cu(1 0 0) has been studied, at T = 513 K, by in situ scanning Auger microscopy. When the leading edges of the pure Pb and Bi diffusion profiles impinge, they both consist of low-coverage lattice gas surface alloyed phases. In these low-coverage phases, Pb displaces surface alloyed Bi and the point of intersection of the profiles drifts towards the Bi source. These features lead to the conclusion that Pb atoms are more strongly bound at surface alloyed sites in Cu(1 0 0) than Bi atoms. Once the total coverage (Pb + Bi) on the substrate reaches about one monolayer, Pb and Bi are dealloyed from the substrate, and the interdiffusion profiles become essentially symmetric. Pb and Bi mix in all proportions, with an interdiffusion coefficient of ∼10−13 m2/s. This is considerably smaller than the self-diffusion coefficients previously observed for pure Pb and Bi in their respective high-coverage phases, indicating that the mechanism of interdiffusion is different from that of self-diffusion. As interdiffusion proceeds, the point of intersection of the Pb and Bi profiles reverses its drift direction, leading to the conclusion that binding of Bi atoms to the Cu(1 0 0) substrate is stronger than that of Pb atoms in the highest-coverage surface dealloyed layers. 相似文献

Dissociative chemisorption of O2 on Cu(1 0 0), S/Cu(1 0 0) and Ag/Cu(1 0 0) surface alloy has been investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). A strong reduction in the initial O2 chemisorption probability (S0) from 0.05 to 7.4 × 10−3 is observed already at an Ag coverage of 0.02 ML. Further Ag deposition results only in a moderate decrease in S0. Similar inhibition of O2 dissociation is observed on S/Cu(1 0 0). It is concluded that at very low Ag coverages, the reduced reactivity of Ag/Cu(1 0 0) towards O2 dissociation is primarily due to the steric blocking of the surface defects and that any electronic effects are only secondary and present only at higher Ag coverages. 相似文献

D’Addato et al. [S. D’Addato, P. Luches, R. Gotter, L. Floreano, D. Cvetko, A. Morgante, A. Newton, D. Martin, P. Unsworth, P. Weightman, Surf. Rev. Lett. 9 (2002) 709] studied the variation with Fe coverages in the relative Fe L3-M4,5M4,5 Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) spectral satellite intensity of ultrathin Fe films grown on Cu(1 0 0) by sweeping photon excitation energy through the Fe L2-level ionization threshold. They interpreted that the M4,5 hole in the L3M4,5 double-hole state created by the L2-L3M4,5 Coster–Kronig (CK) decay remains localized for longer than the L3-hole lifetime for the 0.3 and 10 ML coverages but has a lifetime comparable to the L3-hole lifetime for the 1 ML coverages. The present many-body theory shows that when the M4,5 hole created either by the CK decay or by the L3M4,5 shakeoff hops away from the ionized atomic site and becomes completely screened out prior to the L3-hole decay, the Fe L2-L3M4,5-L3-M4,5M4,5 AES main line as well as the Fe L3 M4,5 (satellite)-L3-M4,5M4,5 one, both of which are identical in line shape to the Fe L3-M4,5M4,5 one, dominate in the Fe CK preceded AES spectrum. The present analysis shows that the delocalization time of the M4,5 hole created in the 1 ML Fe/Cu(1 0 0) system by the L2-L3M4,5 CK decay is much shorter than the L3-hole lifetime so that the Fe L3-M4,5M4,5 AES spectral line shape hardly changes, except for the presence of a very weak spectator L2-L3M4,5-M4,5M4,5M4,5 AES satellite, when the photon excitation energy is swept through the Fe L2-level ionization threshold. For the 0.3 ML coverages the M4,5-hole delocalization time is still shorter than the L3-hole lifetime. 相似文献

Photoelectron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and scanning probe microscopy were used to investigate the electronic and structural properties of graphite layers grown by solid state graphitization of SiC(0 0 0 1) surfaces. The process leads to well-ordered graphite layers which are rotated against the substrate lattice by 30°. On on-axis 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) substrates we observe graphitic layers with up to several 100 nm wide terraces. ARUPS spectra of the graphite layers grown on on-axis 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) surfaces are indicative of a well-developed band structure. For the graphite/n-type 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) layer system we observe a Schottky barrier height of ?B,n = 0.3 ± 0.1 eV. ARUPS spectra of graphite layers grown on 8° off-axis oriented 4H-SiC(0 0 0 1) show unique replicas which are explained by a carpet-like growth mode combined with a step bunching of the substrate. 相似文献

High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy was used to study the electronic properties of (3/2 × 3/2)-Na/Cu(1 1 1) at room temperature. Loss spectra showed two-well distinct losses at 114 and 180 meV assigned to not dispersive charge density waves. Mechanisms to explain their existence are proposed. Moreover, the expected 2D plasmon of the Na quantum well state was not observed. The strong influence of the underlying Cu substrate may be responsible for the absence of such mode. 相似文献

Adsorption of oxygen on ultrathin Co/Ir(1 1 1) films thinner than 4 monolayers in an ultrahigh vacuum environment was studied. For oxygen adsorption on cobalt films, the complex adsorption kinetics emerges partly due to the incorporation of oxygen. The amount of oxygen adsorbed at the surfaces is higher than that incorporated into the film as revealed from sputter profiling measurements. At room temperature the CoO layer exhibits paramagnetism and could not contribute to the remanent Kerr intensity. As oxygen exposure increases, the reduction of the Kerr intensity is due to the reduction of the effective layer for the magnetic measurements. Compared with oxygen saturated cobalt films, the concentration of adsorbed oxygen per Co atom shows an oscillatory behavior. A compositional anomaly of a great amount of adsorbed oxygen in submonolayer Co coverage occurs because of the maximized number of adsorption and incorporation sites for oxygen on the surface. A larger charge transfer between Co and oxygen was observed for thinner Co overlayers as revealed from the larger chemical shifts of Auger lines. 相似文献

The growth of barium oxide on a Cu(1 1 1) substrate, formed by the deposition of barium and its subsequent oxidation, yields stable BaO films which expose predominantly the BaO(1 0 0) surface. The interaction of the oxide films with common components of motor-vehicle exhaust gases (CO2, H2O, NOx) has been studied using surface analytical techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and reflection IR spectroscopy (RAIRS). The spectroscopic identification of Ba(OH)2, BaCO3 and Ba(NO2)2 phases is discussed, and the relative stabilities and decomposition mechanisms of these materials when supported on Cu(1 1 1) is revealed by a combination of TPD and XPS. BaO is shown to be resistant to reaction with pure NO and NO/O2 mixtures, but exposure to NO2 leads to the rapid formation of barium nitrite. The formation of the nitrite is proposed to be the first-step in the production of barium nitrate, which has previously been shown to be the main phase involved in NOx storage and reduction (NSR) catalysis. 相似文献

Thin Pd films (1-10 monolayers, ML) were deposited at 35 K on a Pt(1 1 1) single crystal and on an oxygen-terminated FeO(1 1 1) monolayer supported on Pt(1 1 1). Low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, and Kr and CO temperature programmed desorption techniques were used to investigate the annealing induced changes in the film surface morphology. For growth on Pt(1 1 1), the films order upon annealing to 500 K and form epitaxial Pd(1 1 1). Further annealing above 900 K results in Pd diffusion into the Pt(1 1 1) bulk and Pt-Pd alloy formation. Chemisorption of CO shows that even the first ordered monolayer of Pd on Pt(1 1 1) has adsorption properties identical to bulk Pd(1 1 1). Similar experiments conducted on FeO(1 1 1) indicate that 500 K annealing of a 10 ML thick Pd deposit also yields ordered Pd(1 1 1). In contrast, annealing of 1 and 3 ML thick Pd films did not result in formation of continuous Pd(1 1 1). We speculate that for these thinner films Pd diffuses underneath the FeO(1 1 1). 相似文献

We have measured the very low energy photoelectron spectra of the clean and CO covered Cu(0 0 1) surfaces at low temperature (15 K). A step at 34.5 meV below the Fermi level appeared in the CO/Cu(0 0 1) spectra, while no structure was found at the same position in the clean Cu(0 0 1) spectrum. Furthermore, we have succeeded in measuring the spectral shift of the step to 33.2 meV below the Fermi level by isotopic substitution of the CO molecule. We have concluded that this step originates from the inelastic scattering of photoelectrons through excitation of the frustrated rotation mode of the CO molecule. 相似文献

Reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to characterise the interaction of standard and fully deuterated glycine with Cu(1 0 0) and Cu(1 1 1). RAIRS shows clearly that the surface interaction leads to formation of the adsorbed deprotonated glycinate (NH2CH2COO-) species, with some evidence for changes in orientation with coverage previously seen on Cu(1 1 0). Qualitative low energy electron diffraction observations were also conducted to characterise the long-range ordering, although effects of electron-beam-induced radiation damage limited the information obtained. Nevertheless, the results do suggest some subtle isotopic-mass-related structural variations. The results are discussed in the context of previously published scanning tunnelling microscopy and photoelectron diffraction measurements. 相似文献

Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were used to study the growth and the structural evolution of Ni/Co/Pt(1 1 1) following high-temperature annealing. From the oscillation of the specular beam of the LEED and Auger uptake curve, we concluded that the growth mode of thin Ni films on 1 ML Co/Pt(1 1 1) is at least 2 ML layer-by-layer growth before three-dimensional island growth begins. The alloy formation of Ni/1 ML Co/Pt(1 1 1) was analyzed by AES. The temperature for the intermixing of Ni and Co layers in the upper interface without diffusing into the bulk of Pt is independent of the thickness of Ni when a Co buffer is one atomic monolayer. After the temperature was increased, formations of Ni-Co-Pt alloy, Ni-Pt alloy and Co-Pt alloy were observed. The temperature required for the Ni-Co intermixing layer to diffuse into Pt bulk increases with the thickness of Ni. The interlayer distance as a function of annealing temperature for 1 ML Ni/1 ML Co/Pt(1 1 1) was calculated from the I-V LEED. The evolution of LEED patterns was also observed at different annealing temperatures. 相似文献
