As an important property of porous membranes, the surface charge property determines many ionic behaviors of nanopores, such as ionic conductance and selectivity. Based on the dependence of electric double layers on bulk concentrations, ionic conductance through nanopores at high and low concentrations is governed by the bulk conductance and surface charge density, respectively. Here, through the investigation of ionic conductance inside track-etched single polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanopores under various concentrations, the surface charge density of PET membranes is extracted as ∼−0.021 C/m2 at pH 10 over measurements with 40 PET nanopores. Simulations show that surface roughness can cause underestimation in surface charge density due to the inhibited electroosmotic flow. Then, the averaged pore size and porosity of track-etched multipore PET membranes are characterized by the developed ionic conductance method. Through coupled theoretical predictions in ionic conductance under high and low concentrations, the averaged pore size and porosity of porous membranes can be obtained simultaneously. Our method provides a simple and precise way to characterize the pore size and porosity of multipore membranes, especially for those with sub-100 nm pores and low porosities.  相似文献

Track-etched polymer membranes are used to realize low-voltage electroosmotic (EO) pumps. The nanopores in polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes were fabricated by the track-etching technique, the pore diameter was controlled in the range of 100 to 250 nm by adjusting the etching time. The results show that these EO pumps can provide high flow rates at low applied voltages (2-5 V). The maximum normalized flow rate is as high as 0.12 ml min(-1) V(-1) cm(-2), which is comparable to the best values of previously demonstrated EO pumps. We attribute this high performance to the unique properties of the track-etched nanopores in the membranes.  相似文献

Characterization of hepatitis B virus capsids by resistive-pulse sensing   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We report characterization of hepatitis B virus (HBV) capsids by resistive-pulse sensing through single track-etched conical nanopores formed in poly(ethylene terephthalate) membranes. The pores were ~40 nm in diameter at the tip, and the pore surface was covalently modified with triethylene glycol to reduce surface charge density, minimize adsorption of the virus capsids, and suppress electroosmotic flow in the pore. The HBV capsids were assembled in vitro from Cp149, the assembly domain of HBV capsid protein. Assembled T = 3 (90 Cp149 dimer) and T = 4 (120 dimer) capsids are 31 and 36 nm in diameter, respectively, and were easily discriminated by monitoring the change in current as capsids passed through an electrically biased pore. The ratio of the number of T = 3 to T = 4 capsids transiting a pore did not reflect actual concentrations, but favored transport of smaller T = 3 capsids. These results combined with longer transit times for the T = 4 capsids indicated that the capsids must overcome an entropic barrier to enter a pore.  相似文献

The electrochemical properties of the pore wall of track-etched mica membranes are modified (a) by covalent binding of positively and negatively charged groups, and (b) by adsorption of cationic and amonic polyelectrolytes. The electrochemical properties of the pore wall are characterized by measurements of membrane potential, electrical conductivity and streaming potential.By these methods it is possible to change the sign of the surface charge density of the pore wall and to increase its absolute value by a factor of about 30 compared with that of the unmodified pore wall. Changes of electrochemical properties of the pore wall are desirable in studies of negative osmosis and incongruent electrolyte transport in membranes with known pore structure.  相似文献

We have investigated the transport properties of nanopore alumina membranes that were rendered hydrophobic by functionalization with octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODS). The pores in these ODS-modified membranes are so hydrophobic that they are not wetted by water. Nevertheless, nonionic molecules can be transported from an aqueous feed solution on one side of the membrane, through the dry nanopores, and into an aqueous receiver solution on the other side. The transport mechanism involves Langmuir-type adsorption of the permeating molecule onto the ODS layers lining the pore walls, followed by solid-state diffusion along these ODS layers; we have measured the diffusion coefficients associated with this transport process. We have also investigated the transport properties of membranes prepared by filling the ODS-modified pores with the water-immiscible (hydrophobic) liquid mineral oil. In this case the transport mechanism involves solvent extraction of the permeating molecule into the mineral oil subphase confined with the pores, followed by solution-based diffusion through this liquid subphase. Because of this different transport mechanism, the supported-liquid membranes show substantially better transport selectivity than the ODS-modified membranes that contain no liquid subphase.  相似文献

Aggregation stability of low concentrations (10 mg/l) of aqueous dispersions of sulfate lignin is studied in a wide pH range (9.40–2.15) by filtration through track-etched membranes with pore sizes of 30–200 nm. It is shown that at all of the studied pH values, the solution of sulfate lignin is a polydisperse system. As pH decreases, the size of sulfate lignin particles increases, whereas the polydispersity of a system in the studied range of particles sizes (30–200 nm) decreases.  相似文献

Artificial water channels mimicking natural aquaporins (AQPs) can be used for selective and fast transport of water. Here, we quantify the transport performances of peralkyl-carboxylate-pillar[5]arenes dimers in bilayer membranes. They can transport ≈107 water molecules/channel/second, within one order of magnitude of the transport rates of AQPs, rejecting Na+ and K+ cations. The dimers have a tubular structure, superposing pillar[5]arene pores of 5 Å diameter with twisted carboxy-phenyl pores of 2.8 Å diameter. This biomimetic platform, with variable pore dimensions within the same structure, offers size restriction reminiscent of natural proteins. It allows water molecules to selectively transit and prevents bigger hydrated cations from passing through the 2.8 Å pore. Molecular simulations prove that dimeric or multimeric honeycomb aggregates are stable in the membrane and form water pathways through the bilayer. Over time, a significant shift of the upper vs. lower layer occurs initiating new unexpected water permeation events through toroidal pores.  相似文献

We report actively controlled transport that is thermally switchable and size-selective in a nanocapillary array membrane (NCAM) prepared by grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) brushes onto the exterior surface of a Au-coated polycarbonate track-etched membrane. A smooth Au layer on the membrane surface, which is key to obtaining a uniform polymer film, was prepared by thermal evaporation of approximately 50 nm Au on both exterior surfaces. After evaporation, the inner diameter of the pore is reduced slightly, but the NCAM retains a narrow pore size distribution. PNIPPAm brushes with 10-30 nm (dry film) thickness were grafted onto the Au surface through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a disulfide initiator, (BrC(CH3)2COO(CH2)11S)2. Molecular transport through the PNIPAAm polymer brush-modified NCAMs was investigated by real-time fluorescence measurements using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled dextrans ranging from 4.4 to 282 kDa in membranes with variable initial pore diameters (80, 100, and 200 nm) and different PNIPAAm thicknesses. Manipulating the temperature of the NCAM through the PNIPAAm lower critical solution temperature (LCST) causes large, size-dependent changes in the transport rates. Over specific ranges of probe size, transport is completely blocked below the LCST but strongly allowed above the LCST. The combination of the highly uniform PNIPAAm brush and the monodisperse pore size distribution is critical in producing highly reproducible switching behavior. Furthermore, the reversible nature of the switching raises the possibility of using them as actively controlled filtration devices.  相似文献

A theoretical model of dead-end microfiltration (MF) of dilute suspensions is proposed. The model is based on a sieve mechanism of MF and takes into account the probability of membrane pore blocking during MF of dilute colloidal suspensions. An integro-differential equation (IDE) that includes both the membrane pore size and the particle size distributions is deduced. According to the suggested model a similarity property is applicable, which allows one to predict the flux through the membrane as a function of time for any pressure, and dilute concentration, based on one experiment at a single pressure and concentration. The suggested model includes only one fitting parameter, β>1, which takes into account the range of the hydrodynamic influence of a single pore. For a narrow pore size distribution in which one pore diameter predominates (track-etched membranes), the IDE is solved analytically and the derived equation is in good agreement with the measurements on different track-etched membranes. A simple approximate solution of the IDE is derived and that approximate solution, as well as the similarity principal of MF processes, is in good agreement with measurements using a commercial Teflon microfiltration membrane. The theory was further developed to take into account the presence of multiple pores (double, triple and so on pores) on a track-etched membrane surface.

A series of new dead-end filtration experiments are compared with the proposed initial and modified pore blocking models. The challenge suspension used was nearly monodispersed suspension of latex particles of 0.45 μm filtered on a track-etched membrane with similar sized pores 0.4 μm. The filtered suspension concentration ranged from 0.00006 to 0.01% (w/w) and the cross-membrane pressures varied from 1000 to 20,000 Pa. Three stages of microfiltration have been observed. The initial stage is well described by the proposed pore blocking model. The model required only a single parameter that was found to fit all the data under different experimental operational conditions. The second stage corresponds to the transition from the blocking mechanism to the third stage, which is cake filtration. The latter stage occurred after approximately 10–12 particle layers were deposited (mass = 0.006 g) on the surface of the microfiltration membrane.  相似文献

Composite structures have been prepared, in which nanoporous (nuclear track-etched) membranes are coated with supported Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) barrier layers. Permeability in these structures is a strong function of membrane composition and applied dc and ac electric fields. Absolute permeabilities fall in the range 3×10−11 cm2 s−1P≤3×10−9 cm2 s−1, depending on composition of the barrier layer, identity (charge state) of the probe, and presence of a supporting electrolyte. Zero-field permeabilities showed a definite dependence on composition, with membranes possessing barrier layers on both sides performing better than single-sided membranes, barrier layers with LB multilayers performing better than those with just the support layer, and LB layers composed of mixed stilbazolium amphiphiles and octadecanoic acid performing better than those composed purely of stilbazolium amphiphile. All types of barrier layers studied exhibit permeability changes in the presence of applied electric fields. The magnitude of the effect is a strong function of composition of the barrier layer and the presence of supporting electrolyte. The results support electroporation over iontophoresis as the dominant mechanism for field-mediated increases in permeability. Details of the field-induced permeability changes in phosphate buffer and deionized water suggest that at least two effects are important in determining the transport behavior in these structures: a field-induced structural change in the barrier layer which mediates the electroporation and a field-mediated alteration in transport through nanopores of the nuclear track-etched membrane.

Nanocapillary array membranes (NCAMs), comprised of thin (d approximately 5-10 microm) nuclear track-etched polycarbonate sheets containing approximately 10(8) cm(-2) nearly parallel nanometer-diameter capillaries, may act to gate fluid transport between microfluidic channels to effect, for example, sample collection. There is interest in H+-transport across these NCAMs because there is significant practical interest in being able to process analyte-containing samples under different pH conditions in adjacent layers of an integrated microfluidic circuit and because protons, with their inherently high mobility, present a challenge in separating microfluidic environments with different properties. To evaluate the capability of NCAMs to support pH gradients, the proton transport properties of NCAMs were studied using laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy (LSCFM). Spatiotemporal maps of [H+] in microfluidic channels adjacent to the NCAMs yield information regarding diffusive and electrokinetic transport of protons. The NCAMs studied here are characterized by a positive zeta potential, zeta > 0, so at small nanocapillary diameters, the overlap of electrical double layers associated with opposite walls of the nanocapillary establish an energy barrier for either diffusion or electrokinetic transport of cations through the nanometer-diameter capillaries due to the positive charge on the nanocapillary surface. Proton transfer through an NCAM into microchannels is reduced for pore diameters, d < or = 50 nm and ionic strengths I < or = 50 mM, while for large pore diameters or solution ionic strengths, the incomplete overlap of electric double layer allows more facile ionic transfer across the membranes. These results establish the operating conditions for the development of multilevel integrated nanofluidic/microfluidic architectures which can support multidimensional chemical analysis of mass-limited samples requiring sequential operations to be implemented at different pH values.  相似文献

Pore size distributions and pore densities of track-etched polycarbonate ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with pore sizes ranging from 10 to 100 nm (0.01–0.10 μm) were characterized by image analysis of field emission scanning electron micrographs (FESEM) of membranes. Porosity data obtained from image analysis compared well with those derived from manufacturer's specifications, but this may have been coincidental, as pore size and pore density results differed by 20–40% and 25–70%, respectively. The experimentally determined flux through each membrane type varied by up to 30–45% within a batch, and were about 8–46 times higher than the theoretical over the range of membranes. The disparity between theoretical and experimental flux was beyond the bounds of physical variability of the membranes. The membranes with smaller pore size tended to show a greater disparity. Water flux of all membranes increased with increasing temperature, generally in accord with the decreasing viscosity of water. However, unlike the linear increase for the membranes with larger pores (> 50 nm), the membranes with smaller pores (10 and 30 nm) showed exponential increase with temperature. Water flux also increased with a pressure increase from 50 to 300 kPa. Raised pressure appear to enlarge pores resulting in exponential flux enhancement at higher pressure, particularly for membranes with smaller pores (PC10). The pores may have stretched open under pressure to deliver the higher than expected fluxes due to flexibility of polycarbonate films, although FESEM showed no visible evidence of fracturing or tearing of the membranes. The flux results from filtration of aqueous protein solution were a little lower and correlated well with water permeability of the membranes, but remained in discord with the pore size distribution results.  相似文献

A novel liquid membrane system, denoted hybrid liquid membrane (HLM), was developed for the separation of solutes (metal ions, acids, etc.). It utilizes a solution of an extracting reagent (carrier solution), flowing between membranes. The membranes, which separate the carrier solution from feed and receiving (strip) solutions, enable the transport of solutes, but block the transfer of the carrier to the feed or to the strip. Blocking the carrier is achieved through membranes hydrophilic/hydrophobic or ion exchange properties, or through their rentention abilities, due to pore size.  相似文献

We investigate the translocation of λ-DNA molecules through resistive-pulse polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanopore sensors. Single molecules of λ-DNA were detected as a transient current increase due to the effect of DNA charge on ionic current through the pore. DNA translocation was found to deviate from a Poisson process when the interval between translocations was comparable to the duration of translocation events, suggesting that translocation was impeded during the presence of another translocating molecule in the nanopore. Characterization of translocation at different voltage biases revealed that a critical voltage was necessary to drive DNA molecules through the nanopore. Above this critical voltage, frequency of translocation events was directly proportional to DNA concentration and voltage bias, suggesting that transport of DNA from the solution to the nanopore was the rate limiting step. These observations are consistent with experimental results on transport of DNA through nanopores and nanoslits and the theory of hydrodynamically driven polymer flow in pores.  相似文献

Protein pores that selectively transport ions across membranes are among nature’s most efficient machines. The selectivity of these pores can be exploited for ion sensing and water purification. Since it is difficult to reconstitute membrane proteins in their active form for practical applications it is desirable to develop robust synthetic compounds that selectively transport ions across cell membranes. One can envision tuning the selectivity of pores by incorporating functional groups inside the pore. Readily accessible octapeptides containing (aminomethyl)benzoic acid and alanine are reported here that preferentially transport cations over halides across the lipid bilayer. Ion transport is hypothesized through pores formed by stable assemblies of the peptides. The aromatic ring(s) appear to be proximal to the pore and could be potentially utilized for functionalizing the pore interior.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) track-etched membranes with average pore diameters of 692 and 1629 nm were functionalized using the monomer N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and a photoinitiated "grafting-from" approach in which a surface-selective reaction has been most efficiently achieved by combinations of the unmodified PET surface with benzophenone and, alternatively, of an aminated PET surface with benzophenone carboxylic acid. Consistent estimations of the pore diameters of the base PET membranes and of the effective grafted polyNIPAAm layer thicknesses on the PET pore walls were possible only on the basis of the permeabilities measured with aqueous solutions of higher ionic strength (e.g., 0.1 M NaCl). However, the permeabilities measured with ultrapure water indicated that the "electroviscous effect" was significant for both base membranes. The influences of membrane pore diameter, surface charge, and solution ionic strength could be interpreted in the framework of the space-charge model. Functionalized membranes with collapsed grafted polymer hydrogel layer thicknesses of a few nanometers exhibited almost zero values of the zeta potential estimated from the trans-membrane streaming potential measurements. This was caused by a "hydrodynamic screening" of surface charge by the neutral hydrogel. Very pronounced changes in permeability as a function of temperature were measured for PET membranes with grafted polyNIPAAm layers, and the effective layer thickness in the swollen state--here up to approximately 300 nm--correlated well with the degree of functionalization. The subtle additional effects of solution ionic strength on the hydrodynamic layer thickness at 25 degrees C were different from the effects for the base PET membranes and could be explained by a variation in the degree of swelling, resembling a "salting-out" effect. Overall, it had been demonstrated that the functionalized capillary pore membranes are well suited for a detailed and quantitative evaluation of the relationships between the synthesis, the structure, and the function of grafted stimuli-responsive polymer layers.  相似文献

Characteristics of sorption and transport behavior of “wet” (PVC) membranes prepared by a poly(vinyl chloride) casting method were studied. It was found that wet PVC membranes adsorbed enzymes and proteins, whilst they did not adsorb low-molecular-weight compounds. The diffusivity of acetylcholine iodide as a penetrant through the wet PVC membrane was approximately 10?7 cm2/sec, although it depended strongly on membrane thickness and slightly on PVC concentrations in the casting solution. Activation energy of acetylcholine iodide diffusivity was 2.6 kcal/mol. These results were explained by hydrophobic interaction and minute pore dimensions. Wet PVC membrane was suggested as a support for immobilization and was compared with collagen on the basis of transport behavior.  相似文献

Probing the conformation of polyelectrolytes in mesoporous silica spheres   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We report a fluorescence-based approach to probing the conformation of a macromolecule, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), in bimodal mesoporous silica (BMS) particles. The method involves monitoring the fluorescent properties of the probe, 1,3,6,8-pyrenetetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium salt (4-PSA), upon electrostatic binding to PAH molecules adsorbed in the nanopores of the BMS particles. PAH infiltration into the BMS particles, quantified by thermogravimetric analysis and visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy, was examined as a function of PAH adsorption time, PAH molecular weight, and the sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration and pH of the PAH adsorption solution. The conformation of PAH molecules in the nanopores was investigated by incubating the PAH-loaded BMS particles in 4-PSA and using the ratio of the excimer to monomer emission intensity to discern differences in the PAH conformation in the nanopores. Control experiments involving nonporous silica (NS) particles were also conducted to determine the extent to which the nanopores within the BMS particles influence the degree of PAH adsorption and the conformation of the adsorbed PAH molecules. The data indicate that PAH molecules adsorbed in the nanopores adopt a more coiled conformation than PAH molecules adsorbed on NS particles over a wide range of conditions. Further, the conformation of PAH molecules in the nanopores can be tuned by adjusting the NaCl concentration and/or pH of the PAH adsorption solution. 4-PSA titration experiments revealed that at saturation binding there are ca. 3.8 PAH monomer units per 4-PSA molecule. This study provides insights into macromolecule infiltration and conformation in nanopores, which are important for the application of mesoporous materials in the fields of adsorption/immobilization, catalysis, delivery, sensing, separations, and synthesis.  相似文献
