The effects of macroscopic ordering in a system of mesoscopic Josephson junctions are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo simulation technique (using path integrals). The phase diagram of the system in the T-q plane (q is the dimensionless quantum parameter , where J is the Josephson coupling constant and C 0 is the self-capacitance of the granules) is investigated in detail. An analysis of the behavior of the relative root-mean-square phase shifts, as well as the helicity and vorticity moduli, demonstrates the need to employ these two quantities as the parameters which most completely reflect the character of the topological phase transition in the quantum system under consideration. Two methods are proposed for calculating the vorticity modulus: 1) a modification of the Gibbs-Bogolyubov variational principle for calculating the free energy change in response to alteration of the type of boundary conditions; 2) calculation of the response to the introduction of an infinitesimal magnetic flux at some point in the system. The calculations confirm the absence of reentrant melting and phase transitions of a non-Kosterlitz-Thouless type in the region of strong quantum phase fluctuations q>1. Fiz. Tverd. Quantum fluctuations of the phases of the order parameter in two-dimensional arrays of mesoscopic Josephson junctions and their effect on the destruction of superconductivity in the system are investigated by means of a quantum-cosine model that is free of the incorrect application of the phase operator. The proposed model employs trigonometric phase operators and makes it possible to study arrays of small superconducting granules, pores containing superfluid helium, or Josephson junctions in which the average number of particles n 0 (effective bosons, He atoms, and so on) is small, and the standard approach employing the phase operator and the particle number operator as conjugate operators is inapplicable. There is a large difference in the phase diagrams between arrays of macroscopic and mesoscopic objects for n 0<5 and U<J (U is the characteristic interaction energy of the particles per granule and J is the Josephson coupling constant). A model for the quantum measurement of the electronic current in a Josephson junction is presented and analyzed. The model is similar to a Stern-Gerlach apparatus, relying on the deflection of a spin-polarized particle beam by the magnetic field created by the Josephson current. The aim is (1) to explore, with the help of a simple model, some general ideas about the nature of the information which can be obtained by measurements upon a quantum system and (2) to find new approaches for obtaining information about the nature of the states of a macroscopic quantum system. In the case of sufficiently strong coupling between the system and the apparatus, we find that the model provides in principle a standard ideal measurement of the value of the instantaneous Josephson current. In the case of weak coupling, where the measurement is not ideal, we show that the scattering of neutrons from a junction can in principle be used to measure the average value of the Josephson current, thereby allowing an experimental distinction to be made between an eigenstate of relative phase and one of relative Cooper pair number. The possibility of the latter type of measurement suggests an experimental approach to answer a question of fundamental interest, namely whether two isolated superconductors (or superfluids) possess a definite relative phase or a definite relative number of superconducting (or super/lowing) particles.  相似文献

A new type of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based on a single superconducting loop without Josephson junctions and with asymmetric contacts has been proposed. This SQUID offers advantages in simplicity of fabrication and a steeper dependence of measured quantities on the magnetic flux. To confirm the possibility of making this type of SQUID, the magnetic field dependence of the critical current in an aluminum ring with asymmetric contacts has been experimentally investigated.  相似文献

In relation to the problem of quantum measurement, macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in Josephson junctions is one of the most investigated topics. Although many theoretical studies have been devoted to this argument, the agreement on a single theoretical model has not yet been reached. The purpose of the present work is to analyze the load “seen” by the junction, in order to evaluate the contribution of the dissipation that modifies the decay-rate of the metastable state of the junction. The present work reports some theoretical results in relation to different kinds of loading systems, namely, the cases of capacitive, inductive and purely resistive load. We discuss how to control dc Josephson current by influencing the structure and nonequilibrium population of Andreev levels via external electrostatic gates, current injection and electromagnetic radiation. In particular we will consider the ‘giant’ Josephson critical current in ‘long’ SIS tunnel junctions and the regular and anomalous nonequilibrium Josepson currents in three terminal SNS junctions. We will briefly discuss applications to the Josephson field effect transistor (JOFET) and to the newly invented Josephson interference transistor (JOINT).  相似文献

The role of a diffusion current in the phase dynamics of a system of coupled Josephson junctions (JJs) has been analyzed. It is shown that, by studying the temporal dependences of the superconducting, quasi-particle, diffusion, and displacement currents and the dependences of average values of these currents on the total current, it is possible to explain the main features of the current-voltage characteristic (CVC) of the system. The effect of a diffusion current on the character of CVC branching in the vicinity of a critical current and in the region of hysteresis, as well as on the part of CVC branch corresponding to a parametric resonance in the system is demonstrated. A clear interpretation of the differences in the character of CVC branching in a model of capacitively coupled JJs (CCJJ model) and a model of capacitive coupling with diffusion current (CCJJ+DC model) is proposed. It is shown that a decrease in the diffusion current in a JJ leads to the switching of this junction to an oscillating state. The results of model calculations are qualitatively consistent with the experimental data.  相似文献

A simple way to acquire information on the mean values of the phase operators sinϕ and cosϕ of an ultrasmall Josephson junction prepared in an arbitrary pure or not state is reported. Our proposal exploits the recently predicted occurrence of current spikes in the I-V characteristic of a mesojunction irradiated by a quantum single-mode low-intensity coherent electromagnetic field. We theoretically study macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in capacitively coupled Josephson junctions in the case that one of the junctions is in the finite voltage state. We find that the system can be mapped into a one dimensional model with a spontaneous periodic perturbation and calculate the MQT rate by using the time-dependent WKB method. Then the MQT rate is found to be resonantly enhanced and the enhancement of MQT rate is found even off the resonant point.  相似文献
