We demonstrate that multiple-ion-species plasmas greatly reduce stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in high-electron temperature inertial confinement fusion hohlraums. Landau damping is increased by adding hydrogen to a CO(2) gas filled hohlraum. We find that the SBS reflectivity decreases monotonically with increasing hydrogen fraction from 18% to 3% with a simultaneous increase of laser beam transmission. Detailed simulations with a 3D laser-plasma interaction code are in agreement with the experimentally observed reduction in backscattered light.  相似文献

We present results of two-dimensional simulations of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) of an optically smoothed laser beam propagating in an expanding plasma. In the weak damping limit, both backscattered and transmitted light waves exhibit an additional spatiotemporal incoherence, which is shown to be induced by SBS taking place in an inhomogeneous plasma. This mechanism is not related to laser-beam self-focusing and is thus complementary to plasma-induced smoothing [A. J. Schmitt and B. B. Afeyan, Phys. Plasmas 5, 503 (1998)]. The incoherence induced by SBS in the entrance part of the plasma could reduce the growth of parametric instabilities developing further inside the plasma and is able to significantly enlarge the spreading angle of the transmitted light. The angular width of the backscattered light is also found to be significantly larger than the aperture angle of the incident beam.  相似文献

Significant reductions of stimulated Brillouin (SBS) and Raman (SRS) scattering are measured by adding polarization smoothing (PS) to a random phase plate smoothed beam. The associated plasma waves, as measured by Thomson scattering, are spatially and temporally modified and reveal that the interplay between SBS and SRS has to be taken into account to understand the effect of the smoothing. The results also support the numerical simulations [S. Huller et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2706 (1998); R. Berger et al., Phys. Plasmas 6, 1043 (1999)] predicting a reduction of self-focusing with PS, resulting in a decrease of the maximum laser intensity and consequently of SBS and SRS gains.  相似文献

The influence of laser beam smoothing on stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBBS) is studied analytically in the limit of the independent hot spot model. It is shown that the temporal beam smoothing can reduce the SBBS reflectivity significantly even though the laser bandwidth is smaller than the growth rate for the average intensity. The explanation of this reduction effect is given in terms of SBBS growth in the statistically significant hot spots. The minimum laser bandwidth corresponding to an important reduction of the reflectivity is thus determined properly. The dependence of this reduction effect on the acoustic damping for a given laser bandwidth is discussed.  相似文献

We derive an analytical estimate of the effect of temporal smoothing of laser beams on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a regime relevant to indirect drive ignition. We predict a strong reduction of SBS in the gold plasma expanding from the Hohlraum wall with temporal smoothing. This is a new regime far above threshold where the time to reach convective saturation allows for an effective contrast reduction of the beam intensity driving the instability. This result agrees with three dimensional simulations. Polarization smoothing is shown to double the effective bandwidth.  相似文献

We report experimental results which show that the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) spectrum in an optical fiber is inhomogeneous, exhibiting spectral broadening and hole burning under cw monochromatic laser excitation. This phenomenon arises from the waveguide interaction of the pump and Stokes signals and is a fundamental property of SBS in waveguiding systems due to their ability to confine a fan of radiation wave vector directions.  相似文献

介绍了在神光Ⅱ装置上开展的长脉冲2ns三倍频激光与黑腔靶相互作用的实验。报道了采用PIN探测器阵列测量大角度受激Raman散射(SRS)角分布和采用激光卡计对背向SRS光能量积分测量的实验结果。相同实验条件下激光辐照缝靶产生的SRS光能量要强于激光与全腔靶作用产生的SRS光,小腔靶的SRS光能量要强于标准腔靶。对比长脉冲2ns及短脉冲1ns激光打靶实验结果可以看出:由于激光功率密度的下降,长脉冲激光打靶时SRS散射光能量要弱于短脉冲激光打靶。长脉冲2ns激光与标准腔靶相互作用时,等离子体堵腔比较严重。  相似文献

为研究多色非相干激光入射ICF黑腔的受激布里渊散射(SBS)和受激拉曼散射(SRS)发展情况,建立了一维受激散射稳态谱分析模型,并发展了相应的数值模拟程序。分析了不同频率激光激发的受激散射光通过共用等离子体波耦合的物理图像以及影响背散光谱的物理因素。针对波长差0.3 nm的等强度双色光入射封底金腔的SBS进行了模拟分析,结果表明:采用双色光有效抑制了SBS;SBS光谱劈裂成间距为0.3 nm的两个峰;波长较长的入射光对应的SBS光获得了较大的增益;如果固定激光总强度和总带宽,则存在抑制SBS的最优光束数目。  相似文献

Measurements of magnetic fields based on observations of the Zeeman splitting ωB of spectral lines is a virtually impossible task in dense plasmas of powerful Z-pinches where the Stark splitting in the ion microfields ωF is much greater than ωB. In this situation, much better diagnostics of magnetic fields can be achieved through polarization difference contours obtained by subtracting profiles of the same spectral line observed in two orthogonal linear polarizations. In this way the obscuring role of the Stark effect is significantly diminished. In the present paper it is shown that the most sensitive and accurate measurements of the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic field in a dense plasma can be conducted employing central Stark components of hydrogen or hydrogen-like spectral lines. The polarization contour of a central Stark component turned out to be much more sensitive to the magnetic field than the polarization contour of a lateral component of the same line, namely by a factor of (ωFB) 3≫1. This constitutes a drastic enhancement of the previously suggested method that had used the polarization contour of a lateral Stark component because in dense plasmas a typical value of the above factor is (ωFB)3⩾103 . A new technique of mode-locking Q-switched lasers using a birefringent crystal as an intracavity element is reported. Intense elastic waves are generated inside a birefringent crystal through the low-frequency, stimulated Brillouin scattering process and these in turn modulate the refractive index of the crystal and thus provide the necessary phase synchronization for mode-locking. Strong coupling between several neighboring modes of the laser is evidenced by the observation of high pulse repetition rates (several pulses circulating simultaneously within the cavity).  相似文献

为深入研究黑腔内激光成丝不稳定性产生和发展,建立了空间束匀滑光束的传播模型,利用三维激光等离子体相互作用程序LAP3D模拟了黑腔物理条件下的大尺度成丝现象。模拟结果可正确描述成丝后光强的束发散现象及谱空间光强分布特征。从激光能量参数角度分析了导致成丝不稳定性发展的物理因素,并讨论了应用空间束匀滑技术抑制成丝不稳定性的局限性。研究表明:空间束匀滑光束发展成丝的能力取决于光斑内小焦斑的成丝表现,当具备成丝能力的小焦斑份额达到一定比例后,就会导致整个空间束匀滑光束成丝,因此对于光斑平均功率密度较高的光束,须考虑结合其他束匀滑手段来抑制成丝发展。  相似文献

The possibility of switching an external mirror based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with a double feedback loop to a laser cavity is shown experimentally. A significant increase in the output laser power is obtained with conservation of the diffraction quality of the initial radiation. Experimental comparison with an ordinary SBS mirror, excited in a single pass through a nonlinear medium, is performed and the advantage in the energy parameters of the scheme with a double feedback loop is shown. The threshold characteristics of the SBS mirror under study are calculated and good agreement with the experimental data is obtained.  相似文献

We study the nonlinear interaction of a system of incident and reflected electromagnetic waves of arbitrary polarization, propagating in a quasihomogeneous plane layer of isotropic plasma obliquely to the boundary, with scattered electromagnetic waves. These waves are coupled in the double stimulated Mandelstam-Brillouin scattering by a common sound wave that is parallel to the layer boundary. We examine the influence of the wave polarization on the threshold intensity, instability growth rate, and characteristics of the stationary solution. It is found that the nonlinear interaction scales are different for waves of different polarization. In particular, this leads to a change of the wave polarization in the course of the interaction. A photonic approach for microwave/millimeter-wave (MMW) frequency measurement is proposed and demonstrated based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) of a 20-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF). After the MMW signal is modulated to a laser source with two sidebands using optical carrier suppression (OCS) modulation, its frequency can be easily measured by monitoring the SBS-induced amplification with a power meter. Due to the 1-pm resolution of a tunable pump laser source, a frequency measurement range of 1–40 GHz is demonstrated in our experiment with a frequency resolution of 125 MHz. We believe the frequency measurement range can be further extended to satisfy photonic radar front-end processing application.  相似文献

A new method for accurate measurement of the threshold value of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in water in terms of pump laser intensity is investigated. The threshold value of SBS is determined by the point of the deviation of the value of the attenuation coefficients of wide- and narrow-linewidth lasers rather than the intensity of the backscattered SBS signal in the material.  相似文献

A new method for measuring the threshold of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) based on the generation location of a Stokes beam is proposed for the first time to our knowledge. The length of the medium cell is selected to be longer than the free gain length of pump pulses in the Brillouin medium. The reflected light from a certain mirror in front of the medium cell is chosen as the reference beam, and the SBS threshold is measured by the "jump" of the delay between the Stokes beam and the reference beam. An 8-ns Q-switched single-longitudinal-mode pulse is used as the pump and the typical SBS medium FC-72 is selected as the nonlinear medium in our experiment. The SBS threshold intensity is measured to be 173-178 mW/cm 2 , which is consistent with existing results measured with the transmitted energy limiting method.  相似文献
