Shale can act as an unconventional gas reservoir with low permeability and complex seepage characteristics. Study of the apparent permeability and percolation behavior of shale gas is important in understanding the permeability of shale reservoirs, to evaluate formation damage, to develop gas reservoirs, and to design wells. This study simulated methane percolation at 298.15 K under inlet pressures ranging from 0.2 to 4 MPa and a constant outlet pressure of 0.1 MPa to investigate shale gas percolation behavior and apparent permeability. Five representative shale cores from the Carboniferous Hurleg and Huitoutala formations in the eastern Qaidam Basin, China, were analyzed. Each experiment measured the volume flow rate of methane and the inlet pressure. Pseudopressure approach was used to analyze high-velocity flow in shale samples, and apparent permeability at different pressures was calculated using the traditional method. A nonlinear apparent permeability model that considers diffusion and slippage is established from theory and experimental data fitting, and the shale gas flow characteristics affected by slippage and diffusion are analyzed. The results indicate that the pseudopressure formulation that considers the effect of gas properties on high-velocity flow produces a more accurate linear representation of the experimental data. The apparent gas permeability of shale consists of contributions from Darcy permeability, slippage, and diffusion. The apparent permeability and gas flow behavior in the studied shales strongly depended on pressure. The diffusion contribution increased greatly as pressure decreased from 2 to 0.2 MPa, and the smaller the shale permeability, the greater the relative contribution of diffusion flow. At pressures greater than 2 MPa, slip flow contributes \(\sim \)20% of the total flux, Darcy flow contributes up to 70%, and diffusion makes only a minor contribution. This study provides useful information for future studies of the mechanism of shale gas percolation and the exploration and development of Qaidam Basin shale gas specifically.  相似文献

This work presents a new application of boundary element method (BEM) to model fluid transport in unconventional shale gas reservoirs with discrete hydraulic fractures considering diffusion, sorption kinetics and sorbed-phase surface diffusion. The fluid transport model consists of two governing partial differential equations (PDEs) written in terms of effective diffusivities for free and sorbed gases, respectively. Boundary integral formulations are analytically derived using the fundamental solution of the Laplace equation for the governing PDEs and Green’s second identity. The domain integrals arising due to the time-dependent function and nonlinear terms are transformed into boundary integrals employing the dual-reciprocity method. This transformation retains the domain-integral-free, boundary-integral-only character of standard BEM approaches. In the proposed solution, the free- and sorbed-gas flow in the shale matrix is solved simultaneously after coupling the fracture flow equation of free gas. Well production performance under the effect of relaxation phenomenon due to delayed responses of sorbed gas under nonequilibrium sorption condition is rigorously captured by imposing the zero-flux condition at fracture–matrix interface for the sorbed-gas transport equation. The validity of proposed solution is verified using several case studies through comparison against a commercial finite-element numerical simulator.

Hydraulic fracturing has been recognized as the necessary well completion technique to achieve economic production from shale gas formation. However, following the fracturing, fluid–wall interactions can form a damaged zone nearby the fracture characterized by strong capillarity and osmosis effects. Here, we present a new reservoir multi-phase flow model which includes these mechanisms to predict formation damage in the aftermath of the fracturing during shut-in and production periods. In the model, the shale matrix is treated as a multi-scale porosity medium including interconnected organic, inorganic slit-shaped, and clay porosity fields. Prior to the fracturing, the matrix holds gas in the organic and the inorganic slit-shaped pores, water with dissolved salt in the inorganic slit-shaped pores and the clay pores. During and after fracturing, imbibition causes water invasion into the matrix, and then, the injected water–clay interaction may lead to clay-swelling pressure development due to osmosis. The swelling pressure gives additional stress to slit-shaped pores and cause permeability reduction in the inorganic matrix. We develop a simulator describing a system of three pores, two phases (aqueous and gaseous phases), and three components (\(\hbox {H}_{2}\hbox {O}, \hbox {CH}_{4}\), and salt), including osmosis and clay-swelling effect on the permeability. The simulation of aqueous-phase transport through clay shows that high swelling pressure can occur in clays as function of salt type, salt concentration difference, and clay-membrane efficiency. The new model is used to demonstrate the damage zone characteristics. The simulation of two-phase flow through the shale formation shows that, although fracturing is a rapid process, fluid–wall interactions continue to occur after the fracturing due to imbibition mechanism, which allows water to penetrate into the inorganic pore network and displace the gas in-place near the fracture. This water invasion leads to osmosis effect in the formation, which cause clay swelling and the subsequent permeability reduction. Continuing shale–water interactions during the production period can expand the damage zone further.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study adsorption and desorption of pure and multicomponent gas on coal, and the sorption-induced volumetric strain and permeability change of the coal. This paper presents the experimental work. Using CO \(_2\) , N \(_2\) , and CO \(_2\) and N \(_2\) binary mixtures of different composition as injection gases, the measurements were conducted on a cylindrical composite coal core at varying pore pressures and constant effective confining pressure. Sorption was measured using a volumetric method. The initial and equilibrium system pressure and gas phase composition were measured. The total amount of adsorption and the composition of the adsorbed phase (for adsorption of binary gas mixtures) were calculated based on material balance. During the process of sorption, the volume of the core was monitored by recording the volume of the water in the confining pressure vessel. Sorption-induced strain was calculated as the ratio of the sorption-induced volumetric change to the initial volume of the core. After adsorption equilibrium was reached, the permeability of the core was measured based on the Darcy equation for gas flow. Sorption and permeability measurements were conducted for each test gas at first increasing and then decreasing pressures. Volumetric strain was only measured while pore pressure increased. To our knowledge, this is the first study measuring adsorption, volumetric strain, and permeability on the same piece of core with the same apparatus.

The permeability of coalbed methane reservoirs may evolve during the recovery of methane and injection of gas, due to the change of effective stress and gas adsorption and desorption. Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate the sorption-induced permeability change of coal. This paper presents the numerical modeling part of the work. It was found that adsorption of pure gases on coal was well represented by parametric adsorption isotherm models in the literature. Based on the experimental data of this study, adsorption of pure \(\hbox {N}_2\) was modeled using the Langmuir equation, and adsorption of pure \(\hbox {CO}_2\) was well represented by the N-Layer BET equation. For the modeling of CO \(_2\) & N \(_2\) binary mixture adsorption, the ideal adsorbed solution (IAS) model and the real adsorbed solution (RAS) model were used. The IAS model estimated the total amount of mixture adsorption and the composition of the adsorbed phase based on the pure adsorption isotherms. The estimated total adsorption and adsorbed-phase composition were very different from the experimental results, indicating nonideality of the CO \(_2\) –N \(_2\) –Coal-adsorption system. The measured sorption-induced strain was linearly proportional to the total amount of adsorption despite the species of the adsorbed gas. Permeability reduction followed a linear correlation with the volumetric strain with the adsorption of pure \(\hbox {N}_2\) and the tested CO \(_2\) & N \(_2\) binary mixtures, and an exponential correlation with the adsorption of pure \(\hbox {CO}_2\) .  相似文献

Gas transfer experiments on claystone and numerical simulations have been conducted to enhance the knowledge of gas transport in nuclear waste repositories in the Callovo-Oxfordian clay formation in Bure, France. Laboratory Gas transfer experiments were performed with a specific device dedicated to very low permeability measurement (10?23 to 10?20 m2). Experiments were performed on both dry and close to saturation claystone. The Dusty Gas Model, based on multi-component gas transfer equations with Knudsen diffusion, was used to describe the experimental results. The parameters obtained are the effective permeability, the Knudsen diffusion (Klinkenberg effect) and molecular diffusion coefficients and the porosity accessible to gas. Numerical simulations were carried with various boundary conditions and for different gases (helium vs hydrogen) and were compared with experiments to test the reliability of the model parameters and to better understand the mechanisms involved in clays close to saturation. The numerical simulation fitted the experimental data well whereas simpler models cannot describe the complexity of the Knudsen/Klinkenberg effects. Permeabilities lie between 10?22 and 10?20 m2. Claystones close to saturation have an accessible porosity to gas transfer that is lower than 0.1?C1% of the porosity. Analysis of the Klinkenberg effect suggests that this accessible pore network should be made of 50?C200?nm diameter pores. It represents pore networks accessible at capillary pressure lower than 4?MPa.

Various attempts have been made to model flow in shale gas systems. However, there is currently little consensus regarding the impact of molecular and Knudsen diffusion on flow behavior over time in such systems. Direct measurement or model-based estimation of matrix permeability for these “ultra-tight” reservoirs has proven unreliable. The composition of gas produced from tight gas and shale gas reservoirs varies with time for a variety of reasons. The cause of flowing gas compositional change typically cited is selective desorption of gases from the surface of the kerogen in the case of shale. However, other drivers for gas fractionation are important when pore throat dimensions are small enough. Pore throat diameters on the order of molecular mean free path lengths will create non-Darcy flow conditions, where permeability becomes a strong function of pressure. At the low permeabilities found in shale gas systems, the dusty-gas model for flow should be used, which couples diffusion to advective flow. In this study we implement the dusty-gas model into a fluid flow modeling tool based on the TOUGH+ family of codes. We examine the effects of Knudsen diffusion on gas composition in ultra-tight rock. We show that for very small average pore throat diameters, lighter gases are preferentially produced at concentrations significantly higher than in situ conditions. Furthermore, we illustrate a methodology which uses measurements of gas composition to more uniquely determine the permeability of tight reservoirs. We also describe how gas composition measurement could be used to identify flow boundaries in these reservoir systems. We discuss how new measurement techniques and data collection practices should be implemented in order to take advantage of this method. Our contributions include a new, fit-for-purpose numerical model based on the TOUGH+ code capable of characterizing transport effects including permeability adjustment and diffusion in micro- and nano-scale porous media.  相似文献

Numerical investigation of steady natural convection flow through a fluid-saturated porous medium in a vertical rectangular duct is investigated. The Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman model is used to represent the fluid transport within the porous medium. One of the vertical walls of the duct is cooled to a constant temperature, while the other wall is heated to constant but different temperature. The other two sides of the duct are insulated. The finite difference method of second-order accuracy is used to solve the non-dimensional governing equations. The results are presented graphically to show the effects of the Darcy number, inertial parameter, Grashof number, Brinkman number, aspect ratio, and viscosity ratio. It is found that an increase in the Darcy number and inertial parameter reduces the flow intensity whereas an increase in the Grashof number, Brinkman number, aspect ratio, and viscosity ratio increases the flow intensity.  相似文献

We present a mechanistic model of retrograde condensation processes in two- and three-dimensional capillary tube networks under gravitational forces. Condensate filling-emptying cycles in pore segments and gas connection–isolation cycles are included. With the pore-level distribution of gas and condensate in hand, we determine their corresponding relative permeabilities. Details of pore space and displacement are subsumed in pore conductances. Solving for the pressure field in each phase, we find a single effective conductance for each phase as a function of condensate saturation. Along with the effective conductance for the saturated network, the relative permeability for each phase is calculated. Our model porous media are two- and three-dimensional regular networks of pore segments with distributed size and square cross-section. With a Monte Carlo sampling we find the optimum network size to avoid size effects and then we investigate the effect of network dimensionality and pore size distribution on the relative permeabilities of gas and condensate.  相似文献

In coalbeds and shales, gas transport and storage are important for accurate prediction of production rates and for the consideration of subsurface greenhouse gas sequestration. They involve coupled fluid phenomena in porous medium including viscous flow, diffusive transport, and adsorption. Standard approach to describe gas–matrix interactions is deterministic and neglects the effects of local spatial heterogeneities in porosity and material content of the matrix. In this study, adopting weak-noise and mean-field approximations and using a statistical approach in spectral domain, matrix heterogeneity effects are investigated in the presence of non-equilibrium adsorption with random partition coefficient. It is found that the local heterogeneities can generate non-trivial transport and kinetic effects which retard gas release from the matrix and influence the ultimate gas recovery adversely. Macro-transport shows 1/[1 + N Pe /(1 + N Pe )] dependence on the Péclet number, and persists at the diffusive ultra-low permeability limit. Macro-kinetics is directly related to Thiele modulus by the following expression: N Th /(1 + 2N Pe ). It leads to trapping of gas in the adsorbed phase during its release from the matrix, and to an adsorption threshold during the gas uptake by the matrix. Both effects are proportional to the initially available adsorbed gas amount and becomes more pronounced with the increasing variance of the porosity field. Consequently, a new upscaled deterministic gas mass balance is proposed for practical purposes. Numerical results are presented showing free and adsorbed gas distributions and fractional gas sorption curves for unipore coal matrix exhibiting Gaussian porosity distribution. This study is a unique approach for our further understanding of the coalbeds and gas shales, and it is important for the development of sound numerical gas production and sequestration models.  相似文献

We investigate a two-dimensional lattice gas automaton (LGA) for simulating the nonlinear diffusion equation in a random heterogeneous structure. The utilility of the LGA for computation of nonlinear diffusion arises from the fact that, the diffusion coefficient in the LGA depends on the local density of fluid particles which statistically determines the collision rate and thus, the mean free path of the particles at the microscopic scale. The LGA may therefore be used as a physical analogue to simulate moisture flow in unsaturated porous media. The capability of the LGA to account for unsaturated flow is tested through a set of numerical experiments simulating one-dimensional infiltration in a simplified semi-infinite homogenous isotropic porous material. Different mechanisms of interactions are used between the fluid and the solid phase to simulate various fluid–solid interfaces. The heterogeneous medium, initially at low density is submitted to a steep density gradient by continuously injecting fluid particles at high concentration and zero velocity along one face of the model. The propagation of the infiltration front is visualized at different time steps through concentration profiles parallel to the applied concentration gradient and the infiltration rate is measured continuously until steady-state flow is reached. The numerical results show close agreement with the classical theory of flow in unsaturated porous media. The cumulative absorption exhibits the expected t 1/2 dependence. The evolution of the effective diffusion coefficient with the particle concentration is estimated from the measured density profiles for the various porous materials. Depending on the applied fluid–solid interactions, the macroscopic effective diffusivity may vary by more than two orders of magnitude with density.  相似文献

A large amount of nano-pores exists in pore clusters in shale gas reservoirs. In addition to the multiple transport regimes that occur on the nanoscale, the pore space is another major factor that significantly affects the shale gas recoverability. An investigation of the pore-scale shale gas flow is therefore important, and the results can be used to develop an effective cluster-scale pore network model for the convenient examination of the process efficiency. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscope imaging, which enables the acquisition of nanometre-resolution images that facilitate nano-pore identification, was used in conjunction with a high-precision pore network extraction algorithm to generate the equivalent pore network for the simulation of Darcy and shale gas flows through the pores. The characteristic parameters of the pores and the gas transport features were determined and analysed to obtain a deeper understanding of shale gas flow through nanoscale pore clusters, such as the importance of the throat flux–radius distribution and the variation of the tortuosity with pressure. The best parameter scheme for the proposed effective model of shale gas flow was selected out of three derived schemes based on the pore-scale prediction results. The model is applicable to pore-scale to cluster-scale shale gas flows and can be used to avoid the multiple-solution problems in the study of gas flows. It affords a foundation for further study to develop models for shale gas flows on larger scales.  相似文献

The deep-mining coal seam impacted by high in situ stress, where Klinkenberg effects for gas flow were very obvious due to low gas permeability, could be regarded as a porous and tight gas-bearing media. Moreover, the Klinkenberg effects had a significant effect on gas flow behavior of deep-mining coal seam. Based on the gas flow properties of deep-mining coal seams affected by in situ stress field, geothermal temperature field and geo-electric field, a new mathematical model of coalbed gas flow, which reflected the impact of Klinkenberg effects on coalbed gas flow properties in multi-physical fields, was developed by establishing the flow equation, state equation, and continuity equation and content equation of coalbed gas. The analytic solution was derived for the model of one-dimensional steady coalbed gas flow with Klinkenberg effects affected by in situ stress field and geothermal temperature field, and a sensitivity analysis of its physical parameters was carried out by comparing available analytic solutions and the measured values. The results show that the analytic solutions of this model of coalbed gas flow with Klinkenberg effects are closer to the measured values compared to those without Klinkenberg effects, and this model can reflect more accurately gas flow of deep-mining coal seams. Moreover, the analytic solution of this model is more sensitive to the change of Klinkenberg factor b and temperature grad G than depth h.  相似文献

Experimental coal cores were collected from a coalbed of Sihe colliery and Zhaozhuang colliery, Qinshui Basin, China. Their gas effective permeability was studied under effects of water content and effective stress. The experiments were mainly carried out on a self-made ??Triaxial Stress Thermal?Chydrological?Cmechanical Coal Gas Permeameter.?? The results showed that when the temperatures of gas and coal were constant, a negative effect of either water content or effective stress was reported on the gas transportation, i.e., the gas effective permeability decreased with the increasing of water content under constant effective stress and it also decreased as the effective stress increased when the water content was constant. Under experimental conditions as in this study, the effects of water content and effective stress on the gas effective permeability was described by a linear?Cexponential equation, which presented that the gas effective permeability had a linear relationship with the water content and an exponential relationship with the effective stress. The permeation pores were defined as the primary places of transporting the coalbed gas. They were affected by water content and effective stress in different ways. The water content occupied the space of permeation pores, while the effective stress changed the shape of permeation pores. Consequently, the gas effective permeability was also affected by the two aspects.  相似文献

Positive velocity dependency of relative permeability of gas–condensate systems, which has been observed in many different core experiments, is now well acknowledged. The above behaviour, which is due to two-phase flow coupling in condensing systems at low interfacial tension (IFT) conditions, was simulated using a 3D pore network model. The steady-dynamic bond network model developed for this purpose was also equipped with a novel anchoring technique, which was based on the equivalent hydraulic length concept adopted from fluid flow through pipes. The available rock data on the co-ordination number, capillary pressure, absolute permeability, porosity and one set of measured relative permeability curves were utilised to anchor the capillary, volumetric and flow characteristics of the constructed network model to those properties of the real core sample. Then the model was used to predict the effective permeability values at other IFT and velocity levels. There is a reasonable quantitative agreement between the predicted and measured relative permeability values affected by the coupling rate effect.  相似文献
