An analysis is made of the transient free convection from a vertical flat plate which is embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium. It is assumed that for time a steady state temperature or velocity has been obtained in the boundary-layer which occurs due to a uniform flux dissipation rate . Then at time the heat flux on the plate is suddenly changed to and maintained at this value for 0$$ " align="middle" border="0"> . An analytical solution has been obtained for the temperature/velocity field for small times in which the transport effects are confined within an inner layer adjacent to the plate. These effects cause a new steady boundary layer. A numerical solution of the full boundary-layer equations is then obtained for the whole transient from to the steady state, firstly by means of a step-by-step method and then by a matching technique. The transition between the two distinct solution methods is always observed to occur very near to the turning point of the plate surface temperature, a time at which the fluid temperature is close to its steady state profile. The solution obtained using the step-by-step method shows excellent agreement with the small time analytical solution. Results are presented to illustrate the occurrence of transients from both small and large increases and decreases in the levels of existing energy inputs.  相似文献

This paper presents an analytical and numerical study of transient free convection from a horizontal surface that is embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium. It is assumed that for time steady state velocity and temperature fields are obtained in the boundary-layer which occurs due to a uniform flux dissipation rate q 1 on the surface. Then, at the heat flux on the surface is suddenly changed to q 2 and maintained at this value for . Firstly, solutions which are valid for small and large are obtained. The full boundary-layer equations are then integrated step-by-step for the transient regime from the initial unsteady state ( ) until such times at which this forward marching approach is no longer well posed. Beyond this time no valid solutions could be obtained which matched the final solution from the forward integration to the steady state profiles at large times .  相似文献

The linear stability theory is used to investigate analytically the effects of gravity modulation on convection in a homogeneous cylindrical porous layer heated from below. The linear stability results show that increasing the frequency of vibration stabilizes the convection. In addition the aspect ratio of the porous cylinder is shown to influence the stability of convection for all frequencies analysed. It was also observed that only synchronous solutions are possible in cylindrical porous layers, with no transition to subharmonic solutions as was the case in Govender (2005a) [Transport Porous Media 59(2), 227–238] for rectangular layers or cavities.  相似文献

The finite difference method is used to analyze the stability of a binary mixture with anomalous thermodiffusion relative to perturbations of finite amplitude. In the region of monotonic instability, subcritical motions are detected. The amplitude curves, the limits of main-flow stability relative to the most dangerous perturbations, and the stream function, temperature and concentration isolines are obtained.  相似文献

We consider the onset of thermo-solutal convection in a couple-stress fluid-saturated anisotropic porous medium, where the chemical equilibrium on the bounding surfaces and the solubility of the dissolved components depend on temperature. The entire study has been spilt into two parts: (i) linear stability analysis (ii) weakly non-linear stability analysis. Stationary case of linear stability analysis is discussed for two modes of bounding surfaces (a) realistic bounding surfaces i.e. Rigid-Rigid and Rigid-Free (R/R and R/F), (b) non-realistic bounding surfaces i.e. Free-Free (F/F). Howsoever, investigation of oscillatory state and weakly non-linear stability are restricted to F/F case. Galerkin method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem for R/R and R/F cases, whereas, exact solutions are obtained for F/F case.A comparative study among flow stability for above different cases is made as function of ratio of viscosities ( i.e., couple-stress viscosity to fluid viscosity which is defined as couple-stress parameter, $(C)$ ) and effective chemical reaction (i.e. chemical reaction parameter, $(\chi )$ ). It has been found that increasing viscosity of the couple-stress fluid, in terms of increasing $C$ , increases flow stability in all three cases, but among all cases its stabilization effect for R/R is maximum. However, in the absence of couple-stress parameter the maximum stability of flow is observed for F/F. Apart from this, the chemical reaction stabilizes the flow for all the three cases. Furthermore, stability analysis for F/F case indicates that couple-stress parameter stabilizes the system in all modes (stationary, oscillatory and finite amplitude) of convection.Damköhler number $(\chi )$ is found to delay the stationary convection, however, it speeds up the onset of oscillatory convection. The non-linear theory based on truncated representation of Fourier series method predicts the occurrence of sub-critical instability in the form of finite amplitude motion. The effect of $C$ and $\chi $ on heat and mass transfer is also examined.  相似文献

We investigate natural convection in a fluid saturated rotating anisotropic porous layer subjected to centrifugal gravitational and Coriolis body forces. The Darcy model (including the centrifugal, gravitational and Coriolis terms; and permeability anisotropy effects) and a modified energy equation (including the effects of thermal anisotropy) is used in the current analysis. The linear stability theory is used to evaluate the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of convection in the presence of thermal and mechanical anisotropy. It is shown that the preferred solution comprises roll cells aligned parallel to the vertical z-axis. As a result, it is found that the Coriolis acceleration (or Taylor number) and the gravitational term play no role in the stability of convection.  相似文献

We consider vibration effects on the stability of solutal convection in a mushy layer being cast in a cylindrical geometry. The near eutectic limit is applied and moderate Vadasz numbers are considered to retain the second-order time derivative in the Darcy equation. Since small to moderate radii casting crucibles are the current area of interest, only synchronous modes are analyzed. The results indicate that the presence of vibration in solidifying mushy layers stabilizes the convection, and provides a quantification of the Rayleigh number associated with solutal convection. Of particular interest is the fact that in solidifying systems, the Rayleigh numbers are significantly smaller than that of a passive porous layer.  相似文献

The vertical throughflow with viscous dissipation in a horizontal porous layer is studied. The horizontal plane boundaries are assumed to be isothermal with unequal temperatures and bottom heating. A basic stationary solution of the governing equations with a uniform vertical velocity field (throughflow) is determined. The temperature field in the basic solution depends only on the vertical coordinate. Departures from the linear heat conduction profile are displayed by the temperature distribution due to the forced convection effect and to the viscous dissipation effect. A linear stability analysis of the basic solution is carried out in order to determine the conditions for the onset of convective rolls. The critical values of the wave number and of the Darcy–Rayleigh number are determined numerically by the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. It is shown that, although generally weak, the effect of viscous dissipation yields an increase of the critical value of the Darcy–Rayleigh number for downward throughflow and a decrease in the case of upward throughflow. Finally, the limiting case of a vanishing boundary temperature difference is discussed.  相似文献

We consider the effects of rotation in a porous layer heated from below and subjected to a variable gravity field. The study is presented for large Vadasz numbers where no oscillatory convection is possible. It is demonstrated that the Coriolis acceleration stabilizes the convection in a variable gravity field, whilst the effect of gravity parameter stabilses the convection when reduced and destabilizes the convection when increased.  相似文献

The problem of natural convection of a binary mixture in a thin porous ring is considered. In the simplified formulation steady-state solutions of the problem are obtained. The stability of these solutions is investigated and a stability map is plotted in the plane of the Rayleigh numbers calculated from the temperature and concentration. It is shown that an auto-oscillation convection regime is established in the ring under certain conditions. It is also found that there is a region of variation of the seepage and diffusion-seepage Rayleigh numbers in which three steady-state solutions are stable.  相似文献

The Darcy Model with the Boussinesq approximation is used to study natural convection in a horizontal annular porous layer filled with a binary fluid, under the influence of a centrifugal force field. Neumann boundary conditions for temperature and concentration are applied on the inner and outer boundary of the enclosure. The governing parameters for the problem are the Rayleigh number, Ra, the Lewis number, Le, the buoyancy ratio, j{\varphi } , the radius ratio of the cavity, R, the normalized porosity, e{\varepsilon } , and parameter a defining double-diffusive convection (a = 0) or Soret induced convection (a = 1). For convection in a thin annular layer (R → 1), analytical solutions for the stream function, temperature and concentration fields are obtained using a concentric flow approximation and an integral form of the energy equation. The critical Rayleigh number for the onset of supercritical convection is predicted explicitly by the present model. Also, results are obtained from the analytical model for finite amplitude convection for which the flow and heat and mass transfer are presented in terms of the governing parameters of the problem. Numerical solutions of the full governing equations are obtained for a wide range of the governing parameters. A good agreement is observed between the analytical model and the numerical simulations.  相似文献

Experimental studies have been conducted to clarify the influence of horizontal harmonic excitations on the dynamic stability of a slender cantilever beam under vertical harmonic excitation. Three kinds of aluminum test beams with rectangular cross section have been used. The test beam being clamped at one end and free at the other end, was vertically stood, and was harmonically excited to both vertical and horizontal directions simultaneously. The direction of the horizontal excitation was taken parallel to one of the beam side faces, i.e. two directions were considered as X and Y directions which have the largest and smallest flexural rigidity, respectively. By varying the horizontal excitation amplitude, keeping the amplitude of excitation in the vertical direction, the influence of the horizontal excitation has been investigated on the principal instability regions in which unstable vibration of the fundamental vibration mode occurs. The excitation frequency in the vertical excitation was taken around twice the fundamental natural frequency 2f Y 1 in smallest rigidity direction, while that in the horizontal direction was taken around both the fundamental natural frequency f Y 1 and twice of it 2f Y 1. Obtained experimental results present useful fundamental data for aseismatic design of structures under earthquake containing both vertical and horizontal excitation components.  相似文献

We investigate the convection amplitude in an infinite porous layer subjected to a vibration body force that is collinear with the gravitational acceleration and heated from below. The analysis focuses on the specific case of low frequency vibration where the frozen time approximation is used. The results reveal that for moderate Vadasz numbers, increasing the magnitude of the acceleration stabilizes the convection. The results of the large Vadasz number analysis reveals that the acceleration plays a passive role in the stability of convection and the classical stability criteria for Rayleigh–Benard convection applies.  相似文献

Recently, in Diaz and Brevdo (J Fluid Mech 681: 567–596, 2011), further in the text referred to as D&B, we found an absolute/convective instability dichotomy at the onset of convection in a flow in a saturated porous layer with either horizontal or vertical solutal and inclined thermal gradients, and horizontal throughflow. The control parameter in D&B triggering the destabilization is the vertical thermal Rayleigh number, R v. In this article, we treat the parameter cases considered in D&B in which the onset of convection has the character of convective instability and occurs through longitudinal modes. By increasing the vertical thermal Rayleigh number starting from its critical value, R vc, we determine the value R vt of R v at which the transition from convective to absolute instability takes place and compute the physical characteristics of the emerging absolutely unstable wave packet. In some cases, the value of the transitional vertical thermal Rayleigh number, R vt, is only slightly greater than the critical value, R vc, meaning that at the onset of convection the base convectively unstable state can be viewed as marginally absolutely unstable. However, in several cases considered, the value of R vt is significantly greater than the critical value, R vc, implying that the base state is not marginally but essentially absolutely stable at the point of destabilization.  相似文献

In this article, we study double-diffusive convection in a horizontal porous medium saturated by a nanofluid, for the case when the base fluid of the nanofluid is itself a binary fluid such as salty water. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis, while the Darcy model is used for the porous medium. The thermal energy equations include the diffusion and cross-diffusion terms. The linear stability is studied using normal mode technique and for non-linear analysis, a minimal representation of the truncated Fourier series analysis involving only two terms has been used. For linear theory analysis, critical Rayleigh number has been obtained, while non-linear analysis has been done in terms of the Nusselt numbers.  相似文献

The problem of the development of convection in a binary mixture in the neighborhood of an infinite vertical plate, on which a constant (after initial switch-on) heat flux and zero admixture flow are given, is solved. In particular, the cases of neutral and stable density stratification of the medium are considered. It is found that heat transfer to the medium can lead not to an increase but to a decrease in its temperature. This can be interpreted as the effective negative heat capacity of the stratified binary mixture.  相似文献
