We study the Hamiltonian dynamics of a one-dimensional chain of linearly coupled particles in a spatially periodic potential which is subjected to a time-periodic mono-frequency external field. The average over time and space of the related force vanishes and hence, the system is effectively without bias which excludes any ratchet effect. We pay special attention to the escape of the entire chain when initially all of its units are distributed in a potential well. Moreover for an escaping chain we explore the possibility of the successive generation of a directed flow based on large accelerations. We find that for adiabatic slope-modulations due to the ac-field transient long-range transport dynamics arises whose direction is governed by the initial phase of the modulation. Most strikingly, that for the driven many particle Hamiltonian system directed collective motion is observed provides evidence for the existence of families of transporting invariant tori confining orbits in ballistic channels in the high-dimensional phase spaces.  相似文献

We numerically investigate the quenched random directed sandpile models which are local, conservative and Abelian. A local flow balance between the outflow of grains during a single toppling at a site and the total number of grains flowing into the same site plays an important role when all the nearest-neighbouring sites of the above-mentioned site topple for once. The quenched model has the same critical exponents with the Abelian deterministic directed sandpile model when the local flow balance exists, otherwise the critical exponents of this quenched model and the annealed Abelian random directed sandpile model are the same. These results indicate that the presence or absence of this local flow balance determines the universality class of the Abelian directed sandpile model.  相似文献

We consider models of directed random polymers interacting with a defect line, which are known to undergo a pinning/depinning (or localization/delocalization) phase transition. We are interested in critical properties and we prove, in particular, finite-size upper bounds on the order parameter (the contact fraction) in a window around the critical point, shrinking with the system size. Moreover, we derive a new inequality relating the free energy F and an annealed exponent μ which describes extreme fluctuations of the polymer in the localized region. For the particular case of a (1+1)-dimensional interface wetting model, we show that this implies an inequality between the critical exponents which govern the divergence of the disorder-averaged correlation length and of the typical one. Our results are based on the recently proven smoothness property of the depinning transition in presence of quenched disorder and on concentration of measure ideas.  相似文献

We study an atom-phonon coupling model introduced recently for spin-conversion phenomenon. The originality of this model, performed on a linear chain of atoms, is that the elastic force constant values of the spring linking two atoms depends on their electronic states. This leads to introduce naturally in the chain long- and short-range interactions, which appear respectively like a Zeeman and an exchange interactions. The exchange-like interaction can be ferro-, antiferro- or equal to zero. The effects of long-range interactions have already been studied. Here we study those of the short-range interaction. We study the critical point of directed pinning/wetting models with quenched disorder. The distribution K(·) of the location of the first contact of the (free) polymer with the defect line is assumed to be of the form K(n) = n α-1 L(n), with α ≥ 0 and L(·) slowly varying. The model undergoes a (de)-localization phase transition: the free energy (per unit length) is zero in the delocalized phase and positive in the localized phase. For α < 1/2 disorder is irrelevant: quenched and annealed critical points coincide for small disorder, as well as quenched and annealed critical exponents [3,28]. The same has been proven also for α = 1/2, but under the assumption that L(·) diverges sufficiently fast at infinity, a hypothesis that is not satisfied in the (1 + 1)-dimensional wetting model considered in [12,17], where L(·) is asymptotically constant. Here we prove that, if 1/2 < α < 1 or α > 1, then quenched and annealed critical points differ whenever disorder is present, and we give the scaling form of their difference for small disorder. In agreement with the so-called Harris criterion, disorder is therefore relevant in this case. In the marginal case α = 1/2, under the assumption that L(·) vanishes sufficiently fast at infinity, we prove that the difference between quenched and annealed critical points, which is smaller than any power of the disorder strength, is positive: disorder is marginally relevant. Again, the case considered in [12,17] is out of our analysis and remains open. The results are achieved by setting the parameters of the model so that the annealed system is localized, but close to criticality, and by first considering a quenched system of size that does not exceed the correlation length of the annealed model. In such a regime we can show that the expectation of the partition function raised to a suitably chosen power is small. We then exploit such an information to prove that the expectation of the same fractional power of the partition function goes to zero with the size of the system, a fact that immediately entails that the quenched system is delocalized.  相似文献

建立了外部驱动力及噪声作用下的二维耦合定向输运模型, 其中的一个维度上为周期性分段棘齿势, 另一垂直维度上为周期性对称非棘齿势, 外部驱动力及噪声加在周期对称非棘齿势方向上, 而棘齿势方向不加任何驱动, 采用非平衡统计及非线性动力学理论研究了过阻尼情况下耦合系统在两个维度上的输运性质. 结果显示, 棘齿势与非棘齿势方向均可产生定向输运, 其中棘齿势方向的系统平均速度对耦合强度、噪声强度、驱动力强度及粒子数目均有明显的依赖性, 合适的耦合强度、噪声强度、驱动力强度或粒子数目下均可产生最大输运速度. 而非棘齿势方向的系统平均速度受非棘齿势势垒高度影响显著, 但随耦合强度、驱动力强度、驱动力初相位差及粒子数目的变化均出现波动现象, 表现出平均速度对这些参量的依赖性较弱.  相似文献

Physical gelation in rod-like associating polymer solutions is analyzed by computer simulations and by mean field models. The structural gelation (SG) transition is determined by a rapid change in the cluster weight average. The analytically determined SG transition is in good agreement with the simulation results. At low temperatures we observe a peak in the heat capacity, which maximum is associated with phase segregation. The SG transition is sensitive to the number of associating groups per rod but nearly insensitive to the spatial distribution of associating groups around the rods. Phase segregation is strongly dependent on both the number and distribution of associating groups per rod. The averaging procedure in the random lattice field theory is studied by viewing it as a statistical mechanics of a system of classical particles. The corresponding thermodynamic phase is shown to determine the random lattice configuration which contributes dominantly to the generating function. The non-abelian gauge theory in four (space plus time) dimensions in the annealed and quenched averaging versions is shown to exist as an ideal classical gas, implying that macroscopically homogeneous configurations dominate the configurational averaging. For the free massless scalar field theory with O(n) global symmetry, in the annealed average, the pressure becomes negative for dimensions greater than two when n exceeds a critical number. This implies that macroscopically inhomogeneous collapsed configurations contribute dominantly. In the quenched averaging, the collapse of the massless scalar field theory is prevented and the system becomes an ideal gas which is at infinite temperature. Our results are obtained using exact scaling analysis. We also show approximately that SU(N) gauge theory collapses for dimensions greater than four in the annealed average. Within the same approximation, the collapse is prevented in the quenched average. We also obtain exact scaling differential equations satisfied by the generating function and physical quantities.  相似文献

Boolean networks can be used as simple but general models for complex self-organizing systems. The freedom to choose different rules and structures of interactions makes this model applicable to a wide variety of complex phenomena. It is known that the damage dynamics in annealed Boolean systems should fall in the same universality class of the directed percolation model. In this work we present results about the behavior of this model at and near the critically ordered condition for both the annealed and the quenched versions of the model. Our study concentrates on the way the system responds to a small perturbation. We show that the characteristic correlation time, i.e., the time in which any memory of this perturbation is lost, diverges as one moves towards criticality. Exactly at the critical point, we observe that the time for returning to the natural state after the perturbation follows a power-law distribution. This indicates that most perturbations are quickly restored, while few events may have a global effect on the system, suggesting a mechanism that assures at the same time robustness and adaptability. The critical exponents obtained are in agreement with the values expected for the universality class of mean-field directed percolation both in the annealed and in the quenched Boolean network model. This gives further evidence that annealed Boolean networks may in certain conditions provide a good model for understanding the behavior of regulatory systems. Our results may give insight into the way real self-organizing systems respond to external stimuli, and why critically ordered systems are often observed in Nature.  相似文献

Using bosonization approach, we derive an effective low-energy theory for XXZ-symmetric spin-1/2 zigzag ladders and discuss its phase diagram by a variational approach. A spin nematic phase emerges in a wide part of the phase diagram, either critical or massive. Chiral liquid crystals, for which twist and smectic order strongly compete, can exhibit complex architectures. This is the case of the SmQ phase which shows a high degree of 3D order (tetragonal or hexagonal) as well as a liquid signature. We have combined X-ray scattering and optical observations on a new compound exhibiting a SmQ phase to discriminate between the two models proposed by A.M. Levelut et al. (J. Phys. Motivated by recent experimental data on DNA stretching in presence of polyvalent counterions, we study the force-induced unfolding of a homopolymer on and off lattice. In the fixed force ensemble the globule unravels via a series of steps due to surface effects which play an important role for finite-size chains. This holds both for flexible and stiff polymers. We discuss in a qualitative way how this result may impact on the interpretation of DNA stretching experiments showing peaks in the characteristic curves, by extracting from the raw data the corresponding elongation-versus-force characteristic curves. Furthermore, approximate analytical and numerical calculations, valid in a quasi-equilibrium fixed stretch ensemble, and if the initial low-temperature state is ordered in a spool, show that the average force versus elongation displays peaks related to the geometry of the initial configuration. We introduce the notion of a real form of a Hamiltonian dynamical system in analogy with the notion of real forms for simple Lie algebras. This is done by restricting the complexified initial dynamical system to the fixed point set of a given involution. The resulting subspace is isomorphic (but not symplectomorphic) to the initial phase space. Thus to each real Hamiltonian system we are able to associate another nonequivalent (real) ones. A crucial role in this construction is played by the assumed analyticity and the invariance of the Hamiltonian under the involution. We show that if the initial system is Liouville integrable, then its complexification and its real forms will be integrable again and this provides a method of finding new integrable systems starting from known ones. We demonstrate our construction by finding real forms of dynamics for the Toda chain and a family of Calogero-Moser models. In this paper, we discuss the damped unidirectional motions of a coupled lattice in a periodic potential. Each particle in the lattice is subject to a time-periodic ac force. Our studies reveal that a directed transport process can be observed when the ac forces acting on the coupled lattice have a phase shift (mismatch). This directed motion is a collaboration of the coupling, the substrate potential, and the periodic force, which are all symmetric. The absence of any one of these three factors will not give rise to a directed current. We discuss the complex relations between the directed current and parameters in the system. Results in this paper can be accomplished in experiments. Moreover,our results can be generalized to the studies of directed transport processes in more complicated spatially extended systems.  相似文献

We study an integrable two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with an XYZ-type rung interaction. The exact rung states and rung energies are obtained for the anisotropic rung coupling in the presence of a magnetic field. The magnetic properties are analyzed at both zero and finite temperatures via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and the high-temperature expansion. According to different couplings in the anisotropic rung interaction, there are two cases in which a gap opens, where the ground state involves one or two components in the absence of a magnetic field. We obtain the analytic expressions of all critical fields for the field-induced quantum phase transitions (QPT). The criteria for the existence of a glass transition in a planar vortex array with quenched disorder are studied. Applying a replica Bethe ansatz, we obtain for self-avoiding vortices the exact quenched average free energy and effective stiffness which is found to be in excellent agreement with recent numerical results for the related random bond dimer model [C. Zeng, P. L. Leath, and T. Hwa, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4860 (1999)] Including a repulsive vortex interaction and a finite vortex persistence length xi, we find that for xi-->0 the system is at all temperatures in a glassy phase; a glass transition exists only for finite xi. Our results indicate that planar vortex arrays in superconducting films are glassy at presumably all temperatures.  相似文献

As dense granular materials are sheared, a shear band and an anisotropic force network form. The approach to steady-state behavior depends on the history of the packing and the existing force and contact network. We present experiments on shearing of dense granular matter in a 2D Couette geometry in which we probe the history and evolution of shear bands by measuring particle trajectories and stresses during transients. We find that when shearing is stopped and restarted in the same direction, steady-state behavior is immediately reached, in agreement with the typical assumption that the system is quasistatic. Although some relaxation of the force network is observed when shearing is stopped, quasistatic behavior is maintained because the contact network remains essentially unchanged. When the direction of shear is reversed, a transient occurs in which stresses initially decrease, changes in the force network reach further into the bulk, and particles far from the wheel become more mobile. This occurs because the force network is fragile to changes transverse to the force network established under previous shear; particles must rearrange before becoming jammed again, thereby providing resistance to shear in the reversed direction. The strong force network is re-established after displacing the shearing surface , where d is the mean grain diameter. Steady-state velocity profiles are reached after a shear of . Particles immediately outside of the shear band move on average less than 1 diameter before becoming jammed again. Complex oxides have rich functionalities and advantages for future technologies.In many systems,quenched disorder often holds the key to determine their physical properties,and these properties can be further tuned by chemical doping.However,understanding the role of quenched disorder is complicated because chemical doping simultaneously alters other physical variables such as local lattice distortions and electronic and magnetic environments.Here,we show that spatial confinement is an effective approach to tuning the level of quenched disorder in a complex-oxide system while leaving other physical variables largely undisturbed.Through the confinement of a manganite system down to quasi-one-dimensional nanowires,we observed that the nature of its metal-insulator phase transition exhibits a crossover from a discontinuous to a continuous characteristic,in close accordance with quenched disorder theories.We argue that the quenched disorder,finite size,and surface effects all contribute to our experimental observations.Noticeably,with reduced nanowire width,the magnetoresistance shows substantial enhancement at low temperatures.Our findings offer new insight into experimentally tuning the quenched disorder effect to achieve novel functionalities at reduced dimensions.  相似文献

We show that by choosing appropriate distributions of the randomness the search for optimal paths links diverse problems of disordered media, such as directed percolation, invasion percolation, and directed and nondirected spanning polymers. We also introduce a simple and efficient algorithm, which solves the d-dimensional model numerically in O(N(1+df/d)) steps, where df is the fractal dimension of the path. Using extensive simulations in two dimensions, we identify the phase boundaries of the directed polymer universality class. A new strong-disorder phase occurs where the optimum paths are self-affine with parameter-dependent scaling exponents. Furthermore, the phase diagram contains directed and nondirected percolation as well as the directed random walk models at specific points and lines.  相似文献

Quantum phase transitions occur at zero temperature when some non‐thermal control‐parameter like pressure or chemical composition is changed. They are driven by quantum rather than thermal fluctuations. In this review we first give a pedagogical introduction to quantum phase transitions and quantum critical behavior emphasizing similarities with and differences to classical thermal phase transitions. We then illustrate the general concepts by discussing a few examples of quantum phase transitions occurring in electronic systems. The ferromagnetic transition of itinerant electrons shows a very rich behavior since the magnetization couples to additional electronic soft modes which generates an effective long‐range interaction between the spin fluctuations. We then consider the influence of rare regions on quantum phase transitions in systems with quenched disorder, taking the antiferromagnetic transitions of itinerant electrons as a primary example. Finally we discuss some aspects of the metal‐insulator transition in the presence of quenched disorder and interactions.  相似文献
