Graphene oxide (GO) can be viewed as an amphiphilic soft material, which form thin films at organic solvent-water interfaces. However, organic solvent evaporation provides little driving force, which results in slow GO transfer in aqueous phase, thus dawdling GO film formation processes for various potential applications. We present an ethanol-assisted self-assembly method for the quick formation of GO or GO-based composite thin films with tunable composition, transmittance, and surface resistivity at pentane-water interface. The thickness of pure GO and reduced GO (rGO) films ranging from ~1 nm to more than 10 nm can be controlled by the concentration of GO in bulk solution. The transmittance of rGO films can be tuned from 72% to 97% at 550 nm while the surface resistivity changes from 8.3 to 464.6 kΩ sq(-1). Ethanol is essential for achieving quick formation of GO thin films. When ethanol is injected into GO aqueous dispersion, it serves as a nonsolvent, compromising the stability of GO and providing driving force to allow GO sheets aggregate at the water-pentane interface. On the other hand, neither the evaporation of pentane nor the mixing between ethanol and water provides sufficient driving forces to allow noteworthy amount of GO sheets to migrate from the bulk aqueous phase to the interface. This method can also be extended to prepare GO-based composites thin films with tunable composition, such as GO/single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composite thin films investigated in this work. Reduced GO/SWCNT composite films show much lower surface resistivity compared to pure rGO thin films. This ethanol-assisted self-assembly method opens opportunities to design and fabricate new functional GO-based hybrid materials for various potential applications.  相似文献

A convenient and industrially scalable method for synthesis of homogeneous nanocomposite films comprising poly(styrene‐stat‐butyl acrylate) and nanodimensional graphene oxide (GO) or reduced GO (rGO) is presented. Importantly, the nanocomposite latex undergoes film formation at ambient temperature, thus alleviating any need for high temperature or high pressure methods such as compression molding. The method entails synthesis of an aqueous nanocomposite latex via miniemulsion copolymerization relying on nanodimensional GO sheets as sole surfactant, followed by ambient temperature film formation resulting in homogeneous film. For comparison, a similar latex obtained by physical mixing of a polymer latex with an aqueous GO dispersion results in severe phase separation, illustrating that the miniemulsion approach using GO as surfactant is key to obtaining homogeneous nanocomposite films. Finally, it is demonstrated that the GO sheets can be readily reduced to rGO in situ by heat treatment of the film. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. One‐step fabrication of graphene–polyaniline (graphene–PANI) hybrid film was facilely achieved by cyclic voltammetric electrolysis of a bath containing both graphene oxide (GO) and aniline, where graphene is obtained by electrochemical reduction of GO and PANI is simultaneously obtained by aniline electropolymerization. As there is no strong attraction between aniline and GO under the electrodeposition conditions, the independent depositions of PANI and reduced GO nanosheets at their greatly differed potentials led to alternate layered graphene–PANI films, with the topmost layer being PANI particles or graphene sheets just by changing the initial scan directions. The two kinds of graphene–PANI hybrid films present excellent but different electrical and electrochemical behaviors.  相似文献

Graphene oxide (GO) sheets prepared by Hummers' method have been separated into two portions with large (f1) or small (f2) lateral dimensions from their aqueous dispersion. This method is based on the selective precipitation of GO sheets with lateral dimensions mostly (>90%) larger than 40 μm(2) at a pH value of 4.0 because of their larger hydrophobic planes and fewer hydrophilic oxygenated groups. The hydrazine reduced Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of f1 showed much higher conductivities than those of f2. Furthermore, the thin film of f1 prepared by filtration exhibited a smaller d-space and much higher tensile strength and modulus than those of f2 films. The one-step size fractionation method reported here is simple, cheap, efficient, and environmentally friendly, which can be used for the size fractionation of GO sheets in large scale.  相似文献

Functional fillers in multilayered films provide opportunity in tailoring the mechanical properties through chemical cross‐linking. In this study, Laponite‐graphene oxide co‐dispersion was used to incorporate graphene oxide (GO) easily into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Laponite layer‐by‐layer (LBL) films. The LBL films were found to be uniform and the layer thickness increased linearly with number of depositions. The process was extended to a large number of depositions to investigate the macroscopic mechanical properties of the free‐standing films. The LBL films showed remarkable improvements in mechanical properties as compared to neat PVA film. The GO‐incorporated LBL films displayed higher enhancements in the tensile strength, ductility, and toughness as compared to that of PVA/Laponite LBL films, upon chemical cross‐linking. This suggests the advantageous effects of GO incorporation. Interestingly, cross‐linking of LBL films for longer time period (>1 h) and higher temperature (~80 °C) was not found to be much beneficial. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Thin and ultrathin films of polyethylene of variable thickness are obtained from aqueous dispersions of prefabricated nanoscale crystals by spin‐coating. Continuous films with a thickness of only 15 nm, up to 220 nm, homogeneous over hundreds of μm, or assembled discontinuous monolayers of flat‐on lamella particles were prepared, depending on the solids content of the dispersion employed, as revealed by AFM and TEM. The morphology of melt‐recrystallized films was not affected by the surfactant present. Homogeneous continuous films without undesirable dewetting were retained upon melting and recrystallization of the films upon cooling, composed of polygonal spherulites for a thicker film (220 nm), randomly grown edge‐on lamella for a 40 nm film, and dominant flat‐on lamella for a 15 nm thick film. Annealing below Tm resulted in lamella thickening, without changes of crystal orientation or structure of the particle assemblies for discontinuous monolayers. Surfactant adsorbed to the nanocrystals in the aqueous dispersion desorbs at least partially during formation of the nascent films, and upon annealing below the melting point surfactant migrates to the film‐air interface to form aggregates, which can be removed by rinsing, during which the film stays intact and structurally unaltered as revealed, amongst others, by water contact angles. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, we report a mild and efficient strategy for growing thermosensitive polymers directly from the surface of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO). Exfoliated GO sheets were sequentially subject to the epoxide ring‐opening reaction with tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (TRIS) to increase the amount of reactive sites, the esterification with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide to introduce the Br‐containing initiating groups, and the surface‐initiated single electron transfer–living radical polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) to tune the molecular weights of grafted polymers. All these reactions were performed at ambient temperature without losing any other oxygen‐containing functionality on GO. The resulting TRIS‐GO‐PNIPAM nanocomposites still maintain the separated single layers in dispersion, and the dispersibilities in organic solvents are significantly improved. Meanwhile, the aqueous dispersion of TRIS‐GO‐PNIPAM shows reversible temperature switching self‐assembly and disassembly behavior at about 40°C. Such smart graphene‐based hybrid materials are promising for applications in nanoelectronics, sensors, and microfluidic switches. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of ultrasonic vibrations applied in situ on the formation of W–WO interface during the exposure of a pure tungsten foil to a low‐temperature oxygen plasma is investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF‐SIMS). The tungsten surface was exposed to oxygen plasma at different time intervals and the evolution of the interface formation was studied by angle‐resolved XPS. We show that oxidation without ultrasonic vibrations leads to the formation of a thin oxide film whose growth kinetics is governed by an island growth mechanism. On the other hand, oxide growth in the presence of ultrasonic treatment (UST) appears to follow a layer‐by‐layer growth mode with a distinctly sharper W–WO interface. TOF‐SIMS analysis in this case revealed a reduced amount of water bonded in the film, which suggests an increase in the film's packing density. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Covalent organic nanosheets (CONs) are a new class of porous thin two‐dimensional (2D) nanostructures that can be easily designed and functionalized and could be useful for separation applications. Poor dispersion, layer restacking, and difficult postsynthetic modifications are the major hurdles that need to be overcome to fabricate scalable CON thin films. Herein, we present a unique approach for the chemical exfoliation of an anthracene‐based covalent organic framework (COF) to N‐hexylmaleimide‐functionalized CONs, to yield centimeter‐sized free‐standing thin films through layer‐by‐layer CON assembly at the air–water interface. The thin‐layer fabrication technique presented here is simple, scalable, and does not require any surfactants or stabilizing agents.  相似文献

The distribution of proteins and surfactants at fluid interfaces (air–water and oil–water) is determined by the competitive adsorption between the two types of emulsifiers and by the nature of the protein–surfactant interactions, both at the interface and in the bulk phase, with a pronounced impact on the interfacial rheological properties of these systems. Therefore, the interfacial rheology is of practical importance for food dispersion (emulsion or foam) formulation, texture, and stability. In this review, the existence of protein–surfactant interactions, the mechanical behaviour and/or the composition of emulsifiers at the interface are indirectly determined by interfacial rheology of the mixed films. The effect on the interfacial rheology of protein–surfactant mixed films of the protein, the surfactant, the interface and bulk compositions, the method of formation of the interfacial film, the interactions between film forming components, and the displacement of protein by surfactant have been analysed. The last section tries to understand the role of interfacial rheology of protein–surfactant mixed films on food dispersion formation and stability. The emphasis of the present review is on the interfacial dilatational rheology.  相似文献

Experiments are reported with foam films from aqueous solutions with increasing concentration of a cationic surfactant. A correlation is established between the foam film thickness and the possible variation of diffuse electric layer potential at the air/water interface from a negative value in absence of surfactant to positive values at higher surfactant concentrations. It is concluded that a charge reversal at the air/water interface is expected to occur under increasing concentration of cationic surfactants in aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The “topological polymer chemistry” of amphiphilic linear and cyclic block copolymers at an air/water interface was investigated. A cyclic copolymer and two linear copolymers (AB‐type diblock and ABA‐type triblock copolymers) synthesized from the same monomers were used in this study. Relatively stable monolayers of these three copolymers were observed to form at an air/water interface. Similar condensed‐phase temperature‐dependent behaviors were observed in surface pressure–area isotherms for these three monolayers. Molecular orientations at the air/water interface for the two linear block copolymers were similar to that of the cyclic block copolymer. Atomic force microscopic observations of transferred films for the three polymer types revealed the formation of monolayers with very similar morphologies at the mesoscopic scale at room temperature and constant compression speed. ABA‐type triblock linear copolymers adopted a fiber‐like surface morphology via two‐dimensional crystallization at low compression speeds. In contrast, the cyclic block copolymer formed a shapeless domain. Temperature‐controlled out‐of‐plane X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films fabricated from both amphiphilic linear and cyclic block copolymers was performed to estimate the layer regularity at higher temperatures. Excellent heat‐resistant properties of organized molecular films created from the cyclic copolymer were confirmed. Both copolymer types showed clear diffraction peaks at room temperature, indicating the formation of highly ordered layer structures. However, the layer structures of the linear copolymers gradually disordered when heated. Conversely, the regularity of cyclic copolymer LB multilayers did not change with heating up to 50 °C. Higher‐order reflections (d002, d003) in the XRD patterns were also unchanged, indicative of a highly ordered structure. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels were alternately immersed in aqueous solutions of oppositely charged polymers. The adsorption of the cationic dye methylene blue to the immersed hydrogels suggested the presence of a coating on the hydrogel surfaces. Static contact angles with an air bubble in water showed layer‐by‐layer growth of the films. The films could be transferred onto solid substrates for mechanical strength after the hydrogels were placed on the solid substrates, and this resulted in an estimation of the film thickness. The number of assembly steps could regulate the film thickness. We present here coatings of hydrogels with thin polymer films prepared by layer‐by‐layer assembly. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graphene oxide (GO) is amphiphilic in nature, due to its structure, which consists of hydrophilic oxygen‐containing functional groups and a hydrophobic basal plane of polyaromatic benzene rings. Due to this amphiphilicity, GO can create stable bubbles at water–organic solvent interfaces. In this study, the formation of bubbles at aqueous–organic interfaces in the presence of GO is investigated with different organic solvents. Bubble formation and transfer of GO from water to the organic phase is more prominent in aromatic solvents compared to aliphatic solvents, due to π–π interactions. Maximum transfer of GO from the aqueous to the organic phase is achieved at pH 2, and decreases with rising pH of the aqueous phase. Based on this property, and the ability of GO to adsorb cationic and anionic dye molecules, its application as a carrier for reactive extraction of cationic and anionic dye molecules is explored in toluene, kerosene, and carbon tetrachloride at pH 2 and 25 °C. The kinetics of the adsorption of the dyes onto GO nanosheets that takes place in the aqueous phase is also evaluated with different models, and a pseudo‐second‐order (linear) model is found to be the best fit. The adsorption isotherm data are also analyzed with different isotherm models. The electrostatic interaction and π–π interaction between the dye molecules and GO nanosheets leads to dye extraction of up to 98.2 % using this technique. The dye extraction is maximum in toluene and at low dye concentration.  相似文献

Deposition of Ni‐based cyanide bridged coordination polymer (NiCNNi) flakes onto the surfaces of graphene oxide (GO) sheets, which allows precise control of the resulting lamellar nanoarchitecture by in situ crystallization, is reported. GO sheets are utilized as nucleation sites that promote the optimized crystal growth of NiCNNi flakes. The NiCNNi‐coated GO sheets then self‐assemble and are stabilized as ordered lamellar nanomaterials. Regulated thermal treatment under nitrogen results in a Ni3C–GO composite with a similar morphology to the starting material, and the Ni3C–GO composite exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity and excellent durability for the oxygen reduction reaction.  相似文献

The orientation of metal–organic supercontainer (MOSC) molecules in Langmuir films was systematically studied at the air–water interface. The acidity of the aqueous subphases plays a significant role in tuning the orientation of MOSC molecules in the Langmuir films. Furthermore, Langmuir–Blodgett films of MOSCs were prepared and the uniform multilayer structures demonstrated various surface properties, depending on their conditions of fabrication. Our use of Langmuir films provides a novel approach to access tunable assemblies of MOSC molecules in two‐dimensional thin films.  相似文献

We have demonstrated the facile formation of reversible and fast self‐rolling biopolymer microstructures from sandwiched active–passive, silk‐on‐silk materials. Both experimental and modeling results confirmed that the shape of individual sheets effectively controls biaxial stresses within these sheets, which can self‐roll into distinct 3D structures including microscopic rings, tubules, and helical tubules. This is a unique example of tailoring self‐rolled 3D geometries through shape design without changing the inner morphology of active bimorph biomaterials. In contrast to traditional organic‐soluble synthetic materials, we utilized a biocompatible and biodegradable biopolymer that underwent a facile aqueous layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly process for the fabrication of 2D films. The resulting films can undergo reversible pH‐triggered rolling/unrolling, with a variety of 3D structures forming from biopolymer structures that have identical morphology and composition.  相似文献

The surface potentials of monolayers of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) have been studied as a function of the pH of the subsolution. The influence of the macromolecular configuration on the properties of the ionizable groups was more particularly investigated. Orientation of molecules in the monolayer may be imposed by the stereoregularity of PMA (isotactic, atactic) and by the nature of the interface (air–water, cyclohexane–water). The results are analyzed in terms of theories of the ionic double layer (Gouy model, Donnan equilibrium) which permit the determination of the degree of ionization α of the film. The value of α gives indications about the orientation of specific groups of the macromolecular chain, i.e., of the ionized monomer units. Indeed, at the air–water interface, the film of isotactic PMA is more acid than that of the atactic sample, and at the cyclohexane–water interface, the degree of ionization is greater than at the air–water interface. These properties are the consequence of a modification of orientation of the hydrophilic groups with respect to the aqueous phase as a function of the stereoregularity of the sample and the nature of the interface. The variation of α with the pH of the substrate phase may be used to calculate an intrinsic dissociation constant Ks° of the molecules in the film. The value of Ks° is not modified by spreading conditions and remains very similar to that obtained in solution.  相似文献

The unique properties of Langmuir film formation were utilized in assembling a thin skin of an asymmetric membrane. An octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODTMS) Langmuir monolayer was formed at the air–water interface and served as the substrate for growing a bulky sol–gel polymer in situ. The latter was based on the electrochemical deposition of tetramethoxysilane dissolved in the water subphase by means of horizontal touch electrochemistry. The resultant asymmetric layer that consisted of a thin hydrophobic ODTMS Langmuir film connected to a bulk hydrophilic sol–gel network was studied in situ and ex situ by using various techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and goniometry. We found that a porous hydrophilic film grew on top of a hydrophobic layer as was evident from TEM, contact angle, and EIS analyses. The film thickness and film permeability could be controlled by changing the deposition conditions such as the potential window applied and its duration. Hence, this method offers an alternative approach for assembling asymmetric films for various applications  相似文献
