Thermal reactions of the alkoxyamine diastereomers DEPN‐R′ [DEPN: N‐(2‐methylpropyl)‐N‐(1‐diethylphosphophono‐2,2‐dimethyl‐propyl)‐aminoxyl; R′: methoxy‐carbonylethyl and phenylethyl] with (R,R) + (S,S) and (R,S) + (S,R) configurations have been investigated by 1H NMR at 100 °C. During the overall decay the diastereomers interconvert, and an analytical treatment of the combined processes is presented. Rate constants are obtained for the cleavage and reformation of DEPN‐R′ from NMR, electron spin resonance, and chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization experiments also using 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO) as a radical scavenger. The rate constants depend on the diastereomer configuration and the residues R′. Simulations of the kinetics observed with styrene and methyl methacrylate containing solutions yielded rate constants for unimeric and polymeric alkoxyamines DEPN‐(M)n‐R′. The results were compatible with the known DEPN mediation of living styrene and acrylate polymerizations. For methyl methacrylate the equilibrium constant of the reversible cleavage of the dormant chains DEPN‐(M)n‐R′ is very large and renders successful living polymerizations unlikely. Mechanistic and kinetic differences of DEPN‐ and TEMPO‐mediated polymerizations are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 3264–3283, 2002  相似文献

The anionic polymerization behavior of 2‐methyl‐4‐phenyl‐1‐buten‐3‐yne (2) was investigated to get information on the effect of substituent at the 2‐position. The polymerization of 2 did not proceed in tetrahydrofuran at –78°C by lithium initiators, while sodium initiators can conduct the polymerization smoothly to give polymers consisting of a specific 1,2‐polymerized unit. The living nature of the polymerization of 2 by diphenylmethylsodium was supported by the post‐polymerization experiment.  相似文献

The thermal decomposition of five alkoxyamines labeled TEMPO–R, where TEMPO was 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐N‐oxyl and R was cumyl (Cum), 2‐tert‐butoxy‐carbonyl‐2‐propyl (PEst), phenylethyl (PhEt), 1‐tert‐butoxy‐carbonylethyl (EEst), or 1‐methoxycarbonyl‐3‐methyl‐3‐phenylbutyl (Acrylate‐Cum), was studied with 1H NMR in the absence and presence of styrene and methyl methacrylate. The major products were alkenes and the hydroxylamine 1‐hydroxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐ piperidine (TEMPOH), and in monomer‐containing solutions, unimeric and polymeric alkoxyamines and alkenes were also found. Furthermore, the reactions between TEMPO and the radicals EEst and PEst were studied with chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization. In comparison with coupling, TEMPO reacted with the radicals Cum, PEst, PhEt, and EEst and their unimeric styrene adducts by disproportionation to alkenes and TEMPOH only to a minor extent (0.6–3%) but with the radical adducts to methyl methacrylate to a considerable degree (≥20%). Parallel to the radical cleavage, TEMPO–EEst (but not the other alkoxyamines or TEMPO–Acrylate‐Cum) underwent substantial nonradical decay. The consequences for TEMPO‐mediated living radical polymerizations are discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3604–3621, 2001  相似文献

Anionic and cationic ring‐opening polymerizations of two novel cyclotrisiloxanes, tetramethyl‐1‐(3′‐trifluoromethylphenyl)‐1‐phenylcyclotrisiloxane ( I ) and tetramethyl‐1‐[3′,5′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]‐1‐phenylcyclotrisiloxane ( II ), are reported. Anionic ring‐opening polymerization of I or II leads to copolymers with highly regular microstructures. Copolymers obtained by cationic polymerizations of I or II , initiated by triflic acid, have less regular microstructures characteristic of chemoselective polymerization processes. The composition and microstructure of copolymers have been characterized by 1H and 29Si‐NMR, the molecular weight distributions by GPC, and the thermal properties by DSC and TGA. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A rod‐coil‐rod block copolymer, polyhexylisocyanate‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐polyhexylisocyanate, of controlled molecular weight was synthesized quantitatively via living anionic polymerization using potassium naphthalenide in the presence of sodium tetraphenylborate. The use of K+ as the counterion for the polymerization of styrene, and Na+ (NaBPh4) for the polymerization of isocyanate leads to the formation of a well‐controlled novel triblock copolymer.

The ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters, such as ε‐caprolactone, 1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one, and racemic lactide using the combination of 3‐phenyl‐1‐propanol as the initiator and triflimide (HNTf2) as the catalyst at room temperature with the [monomer]0/[initiator]0 ratio of 50/1 was investigated. The polymerizations homogeneously proceeded to afford poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one) (PDXO), and polylactide (PLA) with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersity indices. The molecular weight determined from an 1H NMR analysis (PCL, Mn,NMR = 5380; PDXO, Mn,NMR = 5820; PLA, Mn,NMR = 6490) showed good agreement with the calculated values. The 1H NMR and matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry analyses strongly indicated that the obtained compounds were the desired polyesters. The kinetic measurements confirmed the controlled/living nature for the HNTf2‐catalyzed ROP of cyclic esters. A series of functional alcohols, such as propargyl alcohol, 6‐azido‐1‐hexanol, N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)maleimide, 5‐hexen‐1‐ol, and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate, successfully produced end‐functionalized polyesters. In addition, poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐polyester, poly(δ‐valerolactone)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone), and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐polylactide were synthesized using the HNTf2‐catalyzed ROP. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled free‐radical homopolymerization of n‐butyl acrylate was studied in aqueous miniemulsions at 112 and 125 °C with a low molar mass alkoxyamine unimolecular initiator and an acyclic β‐phosphonylated nitroxide mediator, Ntert‐butyl‐N‐(1‐diethylphosphono‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl) nitroxide, also called SG1. The polymerizations led to stable latices with 20 wt % solids and were obtained with neither coagulation during synthesis nor destabilization over time. However, in contrast to latices obtained via classical free‐radical polymerization, the average particle size of the final latices was large, with broad particle size distributions. The initial [SG1]0/[alkoxyamine]0 molar ratio was shown to control the rate of polymerization. The fraction of SG1 released upon macroradical self‐termination was small with respect to the initial alkoxyamine concentration, indicating a very low fraction of dead chains. Average molar masses were controlled by the initial concentration of alkoxyamine and increased linearly with monomer conversion. The molar mass distribution was narrow, depending on the initial concentration of free nitroxide in the system. The initiator efficiency was lower than 1 at 112 °C but was very significantly improved when either a macroinitiator was used at 112 °C or the polymerization temperature was raised to 125 °C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1‐[2′‐(Heptaphenylcyclotetrasiloxanyl)ethyl]‐1,3,3,5,5‐pentamethylcyclotetrasiloxane ( II ) was prepared from 1‐[2′‐(methyldichlorosilyl)ethyl]‐1,3,3,5,5,7,7‐heptaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane ( I ) and tetramethyldisiloxane‐1,3‐diol. Acid‐catalyzed ring‐opening of II in the presence of tetramethyldisiloxane gave 1,9‐dihydrido‐5‐[2′‐(heptaphenylcyclotetrasiloxanyl)ethyl]nonamethylpentasiloxane ( III ) and 1,9‐dihydrido‐3‐[2′‐(heptaphenylcyclotetrasiloxanyl)ethyl]nonamethylpentasiloxane ( IV ). Both acid‐ and base‐catalyzed ring‐opening polymerization of II gives highly viscous, transparent polymers. The structures of I – IV and polymers were determined by UV, IR, 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. In addition, molecular weights obtained by GPC and NMR end group analysis were confirmed with mass spectrometry. On the basis of 29Si NMR spectroscopy, the polymers appear to result exclusively from ring‐opening of the cyclotrisiloxane ring. No evidence for ring‐opening of the cyclotetrasiloxane ring was observed. Polymer properties were determined by DSC and TGA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ionic polymerization of substituted o‐quinodimethanes via thermal isomerization of benzocyclobutenes is described. In the cationic polymerizations of 1‐methoxy‐o‐quinodimethane in the presence of various cationic initiators at 110 °C for 12 h, chain transfer reactions also considerably underwent besides the polymerization. Meanwhile, cationic polymerizations of 1‐trimethylsilyloxy‐o‐quinodimethane under the same conditions gave good yields of the corresponding polymer. Anionic polymerizations of 1‐cyano‐o‐quinodimethane in the presence of anionic initiators such as n‐BuLi or t‐BuOK were performed at various temperatures for 12 h. Good yields of hexane‐insoluble polymer, which was produced by anionic polymerization of corresponding o‐quinodimethane as an intermediate, were obtained above 120 °C. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lipase‐catalyzed ring‐opening bulk polymerizations of 6(S)‐methyl‐morpholine‐2,5‐dione (MMD) were investigated. Selected commercial lipases were screened as catalysts for MMD polymerization at 100 °C. Polymerizations catalyzed with 10 wt % porcine pancreatic lipase type II crude (PPL), lipase from Pseudomonas cepacia, and lipase type VII from Candida rugosa resulted in MMD conversions of about 75% in 3 days and in molecular weights ranging from 8200 to 12,100. Poly(6‐methyl‐morpholine‐2,5‐dione) [poly(MMD)] had a carboxylic acid group at one end and a hydroxyl group at the other end. However, lipase from Mucor javanicus showed lower catalytic activity for the polymerization. During the polymerization, racemization of the lactate residue took place. PPL was selected for further studies. The rate of polymerization increased with increasing PPL concentration under otherwise identical conditions. When the PPL concentration was 5 or 10 wt % with respect to MMD, a conversion of about 70% was reached after 6 days or 1 day, respectively, whereas for a PPL concentration of 1 wt %, the conversion was less than 20% even after 6 days. High concentrations of PPL (10 wt %) resulted in high number‐average molecular weights (<3 days); with a lower concentration of PPL, lower molecular weight poly(MMD) was obtained. The concentration of water was an important factor that controlled not only the conversion but also the molecular weight. With increasing water content, enhanced polymerization rates were achieved, whereas the molecular weight of poly(MMD) decreased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Monomodal microwaves have overcome the safety uncertainties associated with the precedent domestic microwave ovens. After fast acceptance in inorganic and organic syntheses, polymer chemists have also recently discovered this new kind of microwave reactor. An almost exponential increase of the number of publications in this field reflects the steadily growing interest in the use of microwave irradiation for polymerizations. This review introduces the microwave systems and their applications in polymer syntheses, covering step‐growth and ring‐opening, as well as radical polymerization processes, in order to summarize the hitherto realized polymerizations. Special attention is paid to the differences between microwave‐assisted and conventional heating as well as the “microwave effects”.

The cationic ring‐opening polymerization of a seven‐membered cyclic monothiocarbonate, 1,3‐dioxepan‐2‐thione, produced a soluble polymer through the selective isomerization of thiocarbonyl to a carbonyl group {? [SC(C?O)O(CH2)4]n? }. The molecular weights of the polymer could be controlled by the feed ratio of the monomer to the initiators or the conversion of the monomer during the polymerization, although some termination reactions occurred after the complete consumption of the monomer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A detailed exploration of the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a sugar‐carrying monomer, 6‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2;3,4‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D‐galactopyranose (MAIPGal) was performed. The factors pertinent to ATRP, such as initiators, ligands, catalysts, and temperature were optimized to obtain good control over the polymerization. The kinetics were examined in detail when the polymerization was initiated by methyl 2‐bromoisopropionate (2‐MBP), ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (2‐EBiB), or a macroinitiator, [α‐(2‐bromoisobutyrylate)‐ω‐methyl PEO] (PEO–Br), with bipyridine (bipy) as the ligand at 60 °C or by 2‐EiBB with N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the ligand at room temperature (23 °C). The effects of the catalysts (CuBr and CuCl) were also investigated. We demonstrate that the successful ATRP of MAIPGal can be achieved for 2‐EBiB/CuBr/bipy and 2‐MBP/CuCl/bipy at 60 °C and for 2‐EBiB/CuBr/PMDETA at room temperature. The initiation by 2‐EBiB at room temperature with PMDETA as the ligand should be the most optimum operation for its moderate condition and suppression of many side reactions. Chain extension of P(MAIPGal) prepared by ATRP with methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the second monomer was carried out and a diblock copolymer, P(MAIPGal)‐b‐PMMA, was obtained. Functional polymers, poly(D‐galactose 6‐methacrylate) (PGMA), PEO‐b‐PGMA, and PGMA‐b‐PMMA were obtained after removal of the protecting groups. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the synthesis, characterization, and select properties of a novel polyurethane (PU) prepared using a new polyisobutylene diol, HO‐CH2CH2‐S‐PIB‐S‐CH2CH2‐OH, soft segment and conventional hard segments. The diol is synthesized by terminal functionalization of ally‐telechelic PIB followed by low‐cost thiol‐ene click chemistry. Properties of ‐S‐ containing PU (PIBS‐PU) containing 72.5% PIB were investigated and compared to similar PUs made with HO‐PIB‐OH (PIBO‐PU). Hydrolytic resistance was studied by contact with phosphate‐buffered saline, oxidative resistance by immersing in concentrated HNO3, and metal ion oxidation resistance by exposure to CoCl2/H2O2. Hydrolytic and oxidative resistances of PIBS‐PU and PIBO‐PU are similar and superior to a commercial PDMS‐based PU, Elast‐Eon? E2A. According to 1H NMR spectroscopy the ‐S‐ in PIBS‐PUs remained unchanged upon treatment with HNO3, however, oxidized mainly to ‐SO2‐ by CoCl2/H2O2. Static mechanical properties of PIBS‐PU and PIBO‐PU are similar, except creep resistance of PIBS‐PU is surprisingly superior. The thermal stability of PIBS‐PUs is ~15 °C higher than that of PIBO‐PU. FTIR spectroscopy indicates H bonded S atoms (N‐H…S) between soft and hard segments, which noticeably affect properties. DSC and XRD studies suggest random low‐periodicity crystals dispersed within a soft matrix. Energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy–scanning electron microscopy indicates homogeneous distribution of S atoms on PIBS‐PU surfaces. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Here we show direct polymer growth on hydrogen‐terminated silicon (Si H) as a one‐step process. Si H is immersed in a heated solution of an initiator, a monomer, and a crosslinker. The resulting polymer films are 2–15 nm thick, the thickness can be tuned by varying reaction conditions, and the polymer films are robust. Thinner films are obtained in polymer growth without crosslinker. Radicals produced by the initiator and in growing polymer chains may pluck H atoms from Si H to make reactive dangling bonds. These in turn appear to react with monomers and crosslinkers. Crosslinkers tethered through one double bond may be grafted into polymer chains growing in solution. Surface reactivity is demonstrated by optical ellipsometry, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and wetting.

Here we report the incorporation of ketone groups into poly(4‐hydroxystyrene)s main chain by radical copolymerization of O‐protected hydroxystyrenes such as 4‐ethoxyethoxystyrene and 4‐acetoxystyrene with 2,2‐diphenyl‐4‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxorane (DPMD) followed by removal of the protective groups and the photodegradable behavior of obtained copolymers. The copolymerization of O‐protected hydroxystyrenes with DPMD gave the corresponding copolymers bearing DMPD‐derived ketone groups in the main chain, of which content could be controlled by changing monomer feed ratio. The ethoxyethyl and acetyl groups of the obtained copolymers were completely removed under acidic and basic conditions, respectively, to afford poly(4‐hydroxystyrene)s having ketone moieties in the main chain. The molecular weights of these copolymers decreased under photoirradiation due to the Norrish‐type reactions of the ketone groups distributed in the main chain. These results demonstrate that poly(4‐hydroxystyrene)s having ketone groups in the main chain possess good photo‐scissibility. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polyolefin industry is dominated by gas‐phase and slurry‐phase polymerization using heterogeneous catalysts. In contrast, academic research is focused on homogeneous systems, especially for late‐transition‐metal catalysts. The heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts is a general strategy to provide catalyst solutions for existing industrial polyolefin synthesis. Herein, we report an alternative, potentially general strategy for using homogeneous late‐transition‐metal catalysts in gas‐phase and slurry‐phase polymerization. In this self‐supporting strategy, catalysts with moderate chain‐walking capabilities produced porous polymer supports during gas‐phase ethylene polymerization. Chain walking, in which the metal center can move up and down the polymer chain during polymerization, ensures that the metal center can travel along the polymer chain to find suitable sites for ethylene enchainment. This strategy enables simple heterogenization of catalysts on solid supports for slurry‐phase polymerization. Most importantly, various branched ultra‐high‐molecular‐weight polyethylenes can be prepared under various polymerization conditions with proper catalyst selection.  相似文献

Homopolyaddition reactions of AB‐type monomers containing a 2‐oxazoline and a phenol group in different positions of the phenyl ring, namely, 2‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2‐oxazoline, 2‐(3‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2‐oxazoline, 2‐(2‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2‐oxazoline, and 2‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐4,4‐dimethyl‐2‐oxazoline, were studied. Except for 2‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐4,4‐dimethyl‐2‐oxazoline, the reaction carried out in bulk or a solution of highly boiling solvents resulted in the formation of poly(ether amide)s with molecular weights in the range of 103 to 104 as measured by vapor pressure osmometry and gel permeation chromatography. A mechanism of the growth reaction, including a nucleophilic attack of a phenol group to a 2‐oxazoline ring in the 5‐position, was suggested. The polymerization was accompanied by a side reaction of the amido groups formed by the primary reaction of the 2‐oxazoline ring. This led to branching of the main chain. The thermal properties of the prepared polymers were evaluated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 343–355, 2006  相似文献

A biphasic one‐pot polymerization method enables the preparation of block copolymers from monomers with similar and competitive reactivities without the addition of external materials. AB diblock copolymers were prepared by encapsulating a frozen solution of monomer B on the bottom of a reaction vessel, while the solution polymerization of monomer A was conducted in a liquid layer above. Physical separation between the solid and liquid phases permitted only homopolymerization of monomer A until heating above the melting point of the lower phase, which released monomer B, allowing the addition of the second block to occur. The triggered release of monomer B allowed for chain extension without additional deoxygenation steps or exogenous monomer addition. A method for the closed (i.e., without addition of external reagents) one‐pot synthesis of block copolymers with conventional glassware using straightforward experimental techniques has thus been developed.  相似文献

Thermal decomposition of four tertiary N‐(2‐methylpropyl)‐N‐(1‐diethylphosphono‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl)‐N‐oxyl (SG1)‐based alkoxyamines (SG1‐C(Me)2‐C(O)‐OR, R = Me, tBu, Et, H) has been studied at different experimental conditions using 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopies. This experiment represents the initiating step of methyl methacrylate polymerization. It has been shown that H‐transfer reaction occurs during the decomposition of three alkoxyamines in highly degassed solution, whereas no products of H‐transfer are detected during decomposition of SG1‐MAMA alkoxyamine. The value of the rate constant of H‐transfer for alkoxyamines 1 (SG1‐C(Me)2‐C(O)‐OMe) and 2 ( SG1‐C(Me)2‐C(O)‐OtBu) has been estimated as 1.7 × 103 M?1s?1. The high influence of oxygen on decomposition mechanism is found. In particular, in poorly degassed solutions, nearly quantitative formation of oxidation product has been observed, whereas at residual pressure of 10?5 mbar, the main products originate from H‐atom transfer reaction. The acidity of the reaction medium affects the decomposition mechanism suppressing the H‐atom transfer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献
