This contribution describes a method that manipulates the alignment director of a liquid crystalline sample to obtain anisotropic magnetic interaction parameters, such as dipolar coupling, in an oriented liquid crystalline sample. By changing the axis of rotation with respect to the applied magnetic field in a spinning liquid crystalline sample, the dipolar couplings present in a normally complex strong coupling spectrum are scaled to a simple weak coupling spectrum. This simplified weak coupling spectrum is then correlated with the isotropic chemical shift in a switched angle spinning (SAS) two-dimensional (2D) experiment. This dipolar-isotropic 2D correlation was also observed for the case where the couplings are scaled to a degree where the spectrum approaches strong coupling. The SAS 2D correlation of C(6)F(5)Cl in the nematic liquid crystal I52 was obtained by first evolving at an angle close to the magic angle (54.7 degrees ) and then directly detecting at the magic angle. The SAS method provides a 2D correlation where the weak coupling pairs are revealed as cross-peaks in the indirect dimension separated by the isotropic chemical shifts in the direct dimension. Additionally, by using a more complex SAS method which involves three changes of the spinning axis, the solidlike spinning sideband patterns were correlated with the isotropic chemical shifts in a 2D experiment. These techniques are expected to enhance the interpretation and assignment of anisotropic magnetic interactions including dipolar couplings for molecules dissolved in oriented liquid crystalline phases.  相似文献

The shear flow induced deformations of a nematic liquid crystal layer have been modelled numerically for the case of flow-aligning nematics. The director deviation from the plane of shear, which was predicted earlier for special surface orientation angles, has been confirmed. This deformation takes a form of director rotation about the axis perpendicular to the layer plane. As a result, transverse flow of the nematic arises. The rotation angle is close to pi at sufficiently strong shear stress, and the director is oriented at the usual flow alignment angle in a significant part of the layer. The director coming out of the shear plane should not be treated as a separate effect taking place during the flow, but rather as a way in which the usual flow-aligned structure is achieved.  相似文献

Photon correlation spectroscopy of light scattered by director fluctuations from an evanescent optical wave propagating in the nematic liquid crystal 5CB is used to study the interfacial dynamic behaviour of the liquid crystal. The intensity correlation function of light scattered by interfacial orientation fluctuations is measured by illuminating to give a short optical penetration depth within the nematic. These surface scattering correlation functions strongly differ from the bulk correlation function and are interpreted in terms of a nematic surface orientation mode arising from the coupling between the director field and the fluid velocity. It is shown that the analysis of the surface mode gives a method for measuring anchoring energies in liquid crystals. The anchoring energy obtained for rotation of the director away from the rubbing direction about an axis normal to the surface for 5CB at a rubbed nylon surface is 7.14±0.7 × 10-2 ergcm-2.  相似文献

When a uniaxial nematic liquid crystal is subjected to a magnetic field making a non-zero angle with the C axis, the uniaxial symmetry is broken. The principal effect is a field-induced biaxiality in the long-wavelength region of the director fluctuation spectrum. Whereas the induced biaxiality has little effect on the mean square director fluctuation amplitudes 〈n2x〉 and 〈n2y〉, which are dominated by short-wavelength modes, it can profoundly affect the nuclear spin relaxation behaviour, which is sensitive to long-wavelength modes. Motivated by the increasing number of nuclear spin relaxation studies of director fluctuations in thermotropic, amphiphilic, and polymeric nematic liquid crystals, we present here a theoretical analysis of the effects of field-induced biaxiality on nuclear spin relaxation.  相似文献

We present the first study of convective director structures in nematic side group polymers. A thin liquid crystal cell (10-500 μm) was continuously rotated about an axis perpendicular to the field of a 7T NMR magnet. The director behaviour was followed by deuteron NMR as well as by polarization microscopy. While by optical studies the development of periodic director structures can be directly monitored, the analysis of the NMR lineshape gives detailed information about the director distribution in these structures. The development of the structures depends sensitively on the rotation frequency and is discussed in terms of non-linear amplification of long wavelength director fluctuations due to the coupling between director rotation and viscous flow of the nematic.  相似文献

We have calculated the twist viscosity and the alignment angle between the director and the stream lines in shear flow of a liquid crystal model system, which forms biaxial nematic liquid crystals, as functions of the density, from the Green-Kubo relations by equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation and by a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics algorithm, where a torque conjugate to the director angular velocity is applied to rotate the director. The model system consists of a soft ellipsoid-string fluid where the ellipsoids interact according a repulsive version of the Gay-Berne potential. Four different length-to-width-to-breadth ratios have been studied. On compression, this system forms discotic or calamitic uniaxial nematic phases depending on the dimensions of the molecules, and on further compression a biaxial nematic phase is formed. In the uniaxial nematic phase there is one twist viscosity and one alignment angle. In the biaxial nematic phase there are three twist viscosities and three alignment angles corresponding to the rotation around the various directors and the different alignments of the directors relative to the stream lines, respectively. It is found that the smallest twist viscosity arises by rotation around the director formed by the long axes, the second smallest one arises by rotation around the director formed by the normals of the broadsides, and the largest one by rotation around the remaining director. The first twist viscosity is rather independent of the density whereas the last two ones increase strongly with density. One finds that there is one stable director alignment relative to the streamlines, namely where the director formed by the long axes is almost parallel to the stream lines and where the director formed by the normals of the broadsides is almost parallel to the shear plane. The relative magnitudes of the components of the twist viscosities span a fairly wide interval so this model should be useful for parameterisation experimental data.  相似文献

The strain-induced director reorientation process in nematic liquid single crystal elastomers is investigated for the case of an arbitrary angle between the original director and the external stress axis. If the mechanical stress is applied perpendicular to the original director axis, the reorientation process sets in at a threshold strain. The mesogens are realigning ‘clockwise’ or ‘counter-clockwise’ towards the axis of external stress, simultaniously the monodomain structure is distorted and a periodic pattern formation is observed. If the mechanical stress is applied obliquely with respect to the original director axis, a uniform director reorientation is obtained with retention of the monodomain structure. No threshold strain is observed for this process. The existence of a threshold strain in the case of a perpendicular arrangement of the director to the external stress axis can be understood as a consequence of the distortion of the monodomain structure.  相似文献

The rear film compensated reflective twisted nematic liquid crystal display device was studied in normally black and normally white operation conditions using a dynamic parameter space method. The electro-optical responses and reflectance spectra were also studied for different operation modes. A comparison was made between rear film and front film compensated reflective twisted nematic liquid crystal displays. We show that high quality normally white or normally black modes can be obtained by placing the fast axis of a quarter wave plate at 45° or 0° to the input director direction. The viewing angle characteristics of the optimum modes were also studied.  相似文献

When an s-polarized laser beam impinges on a homeotropically aligned film of nematic liquid crystal at small incident angle, undamped oscillations of the molecular director may be produced. At high beam intensities the oscillations break up into deterministic chaos. Although this effect has been known for a long time and the route to chaos has been qualitatively analysed, no detailed study of the actual molecular director motion has been carried out. We have designed an experimental apparatus to monitor the dynamics of the molecular director, as described by its two polar angles. We observed different dynamical regimes, depending on the laser intensity: steady states, ocillations, rotation and, at the highest laser intensities, deterministic chaos. Moreover, the transitions between the oscillation and rotation regimes are characterized by intermittency.  相似文献

Time-resolved NMR spectroscopy is a powerful method to investigate field-induced rotation of the director in a nematic liquid crystal. The method requires that the director does not rotate significantly during the acquisition of the free induction decay and hence the NMR spectrum. We have extended the method to systems where this is not the case and the observed NMR spectra are now found to contain novel oscillatory features. To understand these oscillations, we have developed a model combining both director and spin dynamics. In addition to increasing the information content of the time-resolved NMR spectra, it also proves possible to determine the field-induced relaxation time from a single spectrum.  相似文献

An N.M.R. method combining the techniques of separated local field spectroscopy (SLF) and variable angle spinning (VAS) is valuable in the investigtion of nematic liquid crystals. Rapid sample spinning causes the nematic director to align along the spinning axis, resulting in narrow peaks in the C-13 N.M.R. spectrum. SLF is a two-dimensional N.M.R. method which produces a first order splitting pattern for each carbon signal from which C-H dipolar coupling constants can be determined. The order parameters for all segments of the liquid crystal molecule can then be calculated. Results for three 4'-cyanophenylcyclohexanes are considered here. These compounds are trans-substituted at the 4 position of cyclohexane ring with n-pentane (PCH5), 1-pentene (3d1CP) and 3-pentene (1d3CP), respectively.  相似文献

The behaviour of a nematic liquid crystal when it is spun about an axis orthogonal to a magnetic field is predicted to be controlled by the critical angular velocity, ωc. For spinning speeds below ωc theory shows that the director makes an increasing angle with the field until at ωc this angle is 45°. Above ωc the director should rotate with an angular velocity slightly less than that of the sample. Observation in both regimes allows ωc to be determined; since it depends on the ratio of the diamagnetic anisotropy to the rotational viscosity coefficient of the nematic, this ratio can be measured. However, an experimental investigation by Eastman et al. [1], suggests that the theoretical relationship between ωc and this ratio may be in error by a factor of about four. We have reanalysed their data in an attempt to check this important claim and have found that there is in fact good agreement between theory and experiment.  相似文献

The functional form of the azimuthal anchoring energy, i.e. the anisotropic part of the interfacial free energy, at the interface between the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl and an obliquely evaporated SiO substrate is measured for the first time by using a reflectometric method. The anchoring energy function is obtained by measuring the director rotation on the interface caused by an external magnetic field ranging from 0 to 2·3 T. The dependence of the anchoring energy on the director azimuthal angle is found to be well fitted by the function Wa(ϕ) = Wasin2 ϕ in agreement with the predictions of the Berreman model for the anchoring at a grooved interface.  相似文献

Dielectric relaxation investigations on the mesogen 1-n-hexyl-4-(4-isothiocyanato-phenyl)bicyclo[2,2,2]octane in the nematic and isotropic phases have been carried out in the frequency region from about 1 kHz to 1 GHz. Two relaxation processes have been observed in both the isotropic and nematic phases, when the measurements of the electric permittivity versus frequency are made parallel to the orientation axis of the liquid crystal. The possible mechanisms responsible for these two processes are discussed. The height of the potential barrier which hinders the rotation of the liquid crystal molecules around the short axis in the nematic state, and the order parameter of the liquid crystal under investigation have been estimated on the basis of the values for the relaxation times in the nematic and isotropic phases.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental studies of the director distribution of a chiral nematic liquid crystal placed in a wedge-shaped cell with weak surface anchoring were performed. We measured local value of pitch as function of position inside each Grandjean-Cano zone by registering selective reflection spectra from narrow stripes cut from each Cano zone. We also measured the rotation of the polarisation plane as function of thickness of the wedge sample. These data allowed determination of the angle between the local director and the easy direction on the surface. The obtained director distributions in individual Cano zones were compared with the results of theory and thus used for restoration of the actual shape of the surface anchoring potential.  相似文献

The dynamics of super-twisted nematic (STN) liquid crystal displays was studied by detailed computer simulation. The time evolution of director configuration and velocity of flow as obtained by solving Ericksen-Leslie hydrodynamic equations. The influence of d/p value and pretilt angle on the dynamic response was also studied. A comparison was also made between twisted nematic and STN liquid crystal displays.  相似文献

The induction of liquid crystal orientation through mechanical stretching was investigated for polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) by means of infrared dichroism. Using a nematic liquid crystal BL006 and polyacrylic acid as the polymer matrix, it was possible to stretch the PDLC films with BL006 in either the isotropic or the nematic phase. After cooling the films under strain to room temperature, the molecular orientation of BL006 was found to be much higher for films that contained isotropic liquid droplets of BL006 at the time of stretching than for films that had nematic droplets. Stretching PDLC films with isotropic droplets results in no molecular orientation, but the orientation is induced during the subsequent cooling when BL006 goes through the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition. Interestingly for PAA/BL006, the nematic director orients along the long axes of the elongated droplets despite liquid crystal anchoring perpendicular to the polymer interface.  相似文献
