Plutonium isotopes were measured by alpha-spectrometry and ICP-MS in sediment samples from two European lakes: Blelham Tarn in U.K. and Stechlin lake in Germany. The ICP-MS measurements were made after alpha-spectrometry counting of the planchets. The planchets were prepared by traditional electrodeposition method after radiochemical extraction, separation and purification of the Pu fraction. A short radiochemical separation using plutonium selective resin, between the two spectrometry measures, is presented. The results show that these two complementary methods are in good agreement, the plutonium activity concentrations are the same. Alpha-spectrometry allows the 238Pu determination and ICP-MS individual measurement of 239Pu and 240Pu. 238Pu/239+240Pu and 240Pu/239Pu ratios are calculated to determine the plutonium contamination source. With the results of these two techniques, it could be demonstrate that the plutonium is of global fallout origin.  相似文献

Correlations have been established between %Eff 240Pu and various plutonium isotopes formed in thermal reactors. Based on these correlations, a method has been developed for the estimation of isotopic composition of plutonium obtained from thermal reactors. The method is simple, fast, non-destructive and finds application for the verification of plutonium isotopic composition in the finished products of known plutonium content. The method could be applied in the nuclear fuel fabrication to verify and confirm the fissile content (239Pu+241Pu) specification. It has also been shown that in principle, similar correlations could be established for Pu obtained from different thermal reactor fuels with reactor specific fitting parameters.  相似文献

This article discusses the age dating results of plutonium/uranium chronometers with a focus on the consequences for age plutonium determination when the basic assumptions of the methodology are not fully met: Incomplete removal of the daughter nuclides at the production date and uranium contamination of plutonium samples. In addition to the 238Pu/234U, 239Pu/235U and 240Pu/236U, the 242Pu/238U chronometer is discussed. The 242Pu/238U radiochronometer has only scarcely been used, due to its high sensitivity to residual uranium. However, it can be a very useful indicator for uranium contamination of aged plutonium samples.  相似文献

In the paper the results of 241Pu activity concentration determination in the biggest Polish rivers are presented. The analysis of more than 100 river water samples showed the Vistula and the Odra as well as three Pomeranian Rivers are important sources of 241Pu in the southern Baltic Sea. There were differences in 241Pu activities depending on season and sampling site and the plutonium contamination came mainly from the global atmospheric fallout as well as the Chernobyl accident, which is confirmed by plutonium activity ratios of 241Pu/239+240Pu and 238Pu/239+240Pu.  相似文献

The239,240Pu/238U ratios in nature determined by previous and present workers have been used to evaluate the extent of plutonium and uranium fallout contamination on the earth's surface. The contamination of the earth's surface due to radioactive fallout of plutonium and uranium varies between 0.01 and 24%. The overall results show that the whole globe is affected by the fallout, thus explaining the high239,240Pu/238U ratios found in our environment today.  相似文献

In order to obtain the information about plutonium contamination in ocean environment, plutonium in the internal organs of squid collected from Japanese inshore were determined by HR-ICP-MS. Although the plutonium was detected in all samples collected in 1980"s, the concentration is almost the same level as the detection limit (1 to 3 mBq/kg wet) in recent years. The atomic ratio of 240Pu/239Pu in all samples was slightly higher than the value of global fallout.  相似文献

Abstract

The method uses basic anion resin to adsorb plutonium and uranium from 7–8 M HNO3 solutions containing dissolved spent reactor fuels. After equilibrating the resin with the solution, a single bead is used to determine the isotopic composition of plutonium and uranium on sample sizes as small as 10?9 to 10?10 g of each element per bead. Isotopic measurements are essentially free of isobaric interferences and fission product contamination in the mass spectrometer is eliminated. A very small aliquot of dissolver solution containing 10?6 g of U and 10?8 g of Pu is sufficient sample for chemically preparing several resin beads. A single prepared bead is loaded onto a rhenium filament and analyzed in a two-stage mass spectrometer using pulse counting for ion detection to obtain the high sensitivity required. Total quantity of the elements, in addition to isotopic abundances, can be determined by isotope dilution. Other areas where the method may be useful are: in plutonium production, isotope separations, and for trace detection of contamination on reactor parts.  相似文献

A method was developed for the determination of plutonium in urine excreted within 72 hours (4–6 l) by an individual, mainly for monitoring internal contamination of persons working with plutonium. Plutonium is successively separated from organic and inorganic macrocomponents present in urine and from other alpha emitters by the help of coprecipitation techniques and by the help of extraction with TTA. The sample is measured on a ZnS scintillation detector. The lowest prbable activity is 0.15 pCi of239Pu/24 hrs urine.  相似文献

The determination of activity ratios for radioisotopes of different half-lives can be used to estimate transit times from a point source to locations further away. For conservative elements, this time is approximately equivalent to the net hydrological transport. However, for non-conservative elements such as plutonium, the additional influence of biogeochemical processes decreases the net transport time. In this study, 241Pu and 239,240Pu concentrations in Irish Sea plankton samples, collected in May 1994, were determined and the 241Pu/239,240Pu ratios calculated. Plutonium-239,240 was measured using a standard method by ion exchange chromatography and alpha counting, and 241Pu was determined by liquid scintillation counting using the disk-supported technique. The latter showed some methodological problems, which are briefly discussed. The 241Pu/239,240Pu ratios gave an estimate of the "transit time" from Sellafield to the different sampling points. In fact, this time represents the age of plutonium in plankton, i.e., the time lag between release from Sellafield and detection at the different sampling stations. The mean plutonium age was 17±2 years (n = 10) and 18.6±0.8 years (n = 13) in phytoplankton and zooplankton, respectively. The spatial distribution was reasonably homogeneous over the Irish Sea. The assimilation-elimination processes of plutonium in plankton are rather rapid. Therefore, it may be assumed that, in this time scale, the plutonium concentrations were in equilibrium with surrounding waters. Thus, it is concluded that plutonium was rather old because resuspension-sedimentation processes had occurred that delayed its transport within the Irish Sea. Therefore, the age of plutonium in plankton represented the hold-up time of plutonium in the sediments from the Irish Sea.  相似文献

Actinide elements concentrations in the products of near release from CNPP accident were estimated. The data on uranium,237Np,241Am and plutonium and curium isotopes content in fuel particles are given. Sums of -emitting radionuclides and plutonium isotopes in reactor graphite particles and of uranium,242Cm,239+240Pu isotopes in the soil and aerosol samples were also determined. By 1989 soil and dust contamination in near release of the accident is due to long-lived -emitting plutonium isotopes.  相似文献

The origin and release date of environmental plutonium have been assessed by the measurement of plutonium and americium isotopic composition. The applicability and sensitivity of different plutonium isotope ratios, 240Pu/239Pu and 241Pu/239Pu measured by inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry and 238Pu/239Pu analysed by alpha spectrometry, have been evaluated for origin determination in several types of environmental samples. With use of mixing models the contribution of different sources (e.g. global fallout or Chernobyl) can be calculated. By the measurement of the 241Am/241Pu isotope ratio, the release date (i.e. formation of 241Pu by irradiation) can be estimated in environmental samples, which is an important parameter to distinguish recent plutonium release from previous (e.g. Chernobyl) emissions.  相似文献

Summary The level of artificial and natural radionuclide concentration as well as heavy metal content were determined in samples of saw sedge and peat collected in the Special Protection Area of peat bogs near Chelm (Poland). Gamma- and alpha-spectrometry with proper sample preparation were used to determine natural gamma-emitters, artificial 137Cs and alpha-radiating plutonium (238Pu and 239,240Pu). Non radioactive elements were determined by AAS. Rather low level of heavy metal concentration in all samples was found, however, the transfer factors were significant. Peat contamination with artificial radionuclides (137Cs and plutonium) was low. Contrary, the concentration of these isotopes in saw sedge was higher than normally observed in non contaminated areas, what is a result of a significant transfer factor.  相似文献

A number of soil and peat cores, sampled throughout Ireland from November 1987 to March 1988, have been analyzed for fallout caesium and plutonium. Specifically,134Cs and137Cs levels were measured by high resolution gamma spectrometry while238Pu and239,240Pu were determined after chemical extraction by alpha spectrometry. The inventories of these nuclides at the locations sampled have been calculated from the resulting profiles and, by extrapolation, preliminary estimates made of the cumulative deposition throughout Ireland. The relative contribution from weapons testing in the atmosphere and the Chernobyl accident to the total caesium inventory have been determined by the134Cs/137Cs isotopic ratio. As expected, no plutonium of Chernobyl origin was detected in surface layers. The cumulative238Pu/239,240Pu ratio measured in Irish soils was found to be consistant with mid-latitude ratios reported by others.  相似文献

Age determination of single plutonium particles was demonstrated using five particles of the standard reference material, NBS 947 (Plutonium Isotopic Standard. National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D.C. 20234, August 19, 1982, currently distributed as NBL CRM-137) and the radioactive decay of 241Pu into 241Am. The elemental ratio of Am/Pu in Pu particles found on a carbon planchet was measured by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometry (WDX) coupled to a scanning electron microscope (SEM). After the WDX measurement, each plutonium particle, with an average size of a few μm, was picked up and relocated to a silicon wafer inside the SEM chamber using a micromanipulator. The silicon wafer was then transferred to a quartz tube for dissolution in an acid solution prior to chemical separation. After the Pu was chemically separated from Am and U, the isotopic ratios of Pu (240Pu/239Pu, 241Pu/239Pu and 242Pu/239Pu) were measured with a thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) for the calculation of Pu age. The age of particles determined in this study was in good agreement with the expected age (35.9 a) of NBS 947 within the measurement uncertainty.  相似文献

Concentrations of239,240Pu and241Am in filtered seawater, particulate fraction and sediment were measured. Methods for determination of these nuclides were critically chequed and a new rapid method for241Am in sediment was developed. Due to seasonal variation a significant decrease of plutonium and americium concentrations in surface water takes place in summer. Americium is more efficiently associated with particulate matter than plutonium. From May 1980 to September 1984 soluble plutonium in the water was reduced to about half. The residence half-time of239,240Pu in the water of Baltic Sea is of the order of 5 years. About similar concentrations of239,240Pu and241Am were found in particulates in water as in the surface layer of the sediment. The average Kd-values for plutonium and americium were 105 and 105–106 ml/g, respectively.  相似文献

In order to know the distribution of plutonium derived from the Nagasaki atomic bomb, soil samples were measured to determine the 240Pu/239Pu isotope ratio of and concentrations of 239+240Pu and 137Cs. The 239+240Pu concentrations in soils, except for Nishiyama area, were close to the average concentration of soil collected in Japan. In soils collected at the Nishiyama area and at the eastern area of Nagasaki Prefecture and at part of northern area in Kumamoto Prefecture, the 240Pu/239Pu ratios were lower than the global fallout values. This suggests that plutonium from the atomic bomb was deposited in the eastern area from the hypocenter reaching up to 100 km eastwards.  相似文献

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in April 1986 caused a widely spread plume of radionuclides containing, amongst other materials, plutonium isotopes. The regional deposition of these nuclides in Finland has been assessed, based on samples of lichen, peat, precipitation, surface soil and grass. Unlike the deposition of transuranium elements from the weapons tests in the 1950"s and the 1960"s, the deposition in Finland from the Chernobyl accident was very unevenly distributed. Even then, the Chernobyl-derived deposition of 239,240Pu in the most contaminated regions of Finland was only around 10% of the global fallout from weapons tests. The total amount of 239,240Pu deposited in Finland was 1.1011 Bq (»25 g), i.e., approximately half of a percent of the activity deposited in the 1950"s and the 1960"s. In addition to the alpha-emitting Pu isotopes, the Chernobyl plume also contained a significant amount of the beta-emitting 241Pu, which is the precursor of the long-lived alpha-emitter 241Am. The highest plutonium deposition values were found in a relatively narrow swath from the southwestern coast of Finland northeastwards across the country. This is related to the calculated route of the air parcel trajectory associated with the initial explosion of the Chernobyl reactor. The high deposition values found in the northeastern part of the plume route over Finland can be attributed to the simultaneous occurrence of precipitation. The relatively high plutonium deposition in the southwestern part of Finland occurred, however, without concurrent precipitation. This indicates that the plutonium was at least partly associated with relatively large particles having a substantial deposition velocity due to gravitational setting  相似文献

The concentrations of238Pu and239, 240Pu were determined in 12 sediment samples collected from the bed of the Romanian Danube river and Black Sea coast during June–September 1994. After the sample material has been properly prepared and242Pu tracer added, plutonium was separated from americium and curium by anion exchange. After electrodeposition on stainless steel discs the elements were counted with an -spectrometry system with silicon surface-barrier detectors. The239, 240Pu concentrations range between 150 and 800 mBq kg–1 dry, while the238Pu concentrations rise up to max 150 mBq kg–1 dry. Although the chemical yields are rather low (51%) we appreciate the results as valuable since they report for the first time the distribution of the plutonium contamination along the Danube river and the Black Sea coast-Romanian sector.  相似文献

The age of plutonium is defined as the time since the last separation of the plutonium isotopes from their daughter nuclides. In this paper, a method for age determination based on analysis of 241Pu/241Am and 240Pu/236Pu using ICP-SFMS is described. Separation of Pu and Am was performed using a solid phase extraction procedure including UTEVA, TEVA, TRU and Ln-resins. The procedure provided separation factors adequate for this purpose. Age determinations were performed on two plutonium reference solutions from the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements, IRMM081 (239Pu) and IRMM083 (240Pu), on sediment from the Marshall Islands (reference material IAEA367) and on soil from the Trinity test site (Trinitite). The measured ages based on the 241Am/241Pu ratio corresponded well with the time since the last parent-daughter separations of all the materials. The ages derived from the 236U/240Pu ratio were in agreement for the IRMM materials, but for IAEA367 the determination of 236U was interfered by tailing from 238U, and for Trinitite the determined age was biased due to formation of 236U in the detonation of the “Gadget”.  相似文献

Plutonium isotope concentrations in the surface air at Tsukuba, Japan are reported during the period from 1981 to the end of 1986. The239,240Pu concentration in the surface air, which showed a marked seasonal variation with a spring maximum and fall minimum, decreased until the end of 1985 according to the stratospheric residence time of 1.15 years. In May 1986, elevated239,240Pu concentrations with high238Pu/239,240Pu activity ratios were observed. The serial trend of plutonium concentration in the surface air is similar to the concentrations of the Chernobyl-released radionuclides. These findings suggest that a significant part of the plutonium in the surface air in May 1986 was due to the Chernobyl fallout. The size distribution of plutonium bearing particles indicates that plutonium isotopes were mechanically released in the Chernobyl accident. The surface air concentration of plutonium from the Chernobyl accident was much lower than the concentrations of the volatile fission products, and increased the monthly mean239,240Pu concentration by only 0.03 Bqm–3.  相似文献
