We try to understand the behavior of algebraic shifting with respect to some basic constructions on simplicial complexes, such as union, coning, and (more generally) join. In particular, for the disjoint union of simplicial complexes we prove Δ(K ˙∪ L) = Δ(Δ(K) ˙∪ Δ(L)) (conjectured by Kalai [6]), and for the join we give an example of simplicial complexes K and L for which Δ(K*L)≠Δ(Δ(K)*Δ(L)) (disproving a conjecture by Kalai [6]), where Δ denotes the (exterior) algebraic shifting operator. We develop a ‘homological’ point of view on algebraic shifting which is used throughout this work.  相似文献

An extension of a classical theorem of Rellich to the exterior of a closed proper convex cone is proved: Let Γ be a closed convex proper cone inR n and −Γ′ be the antipodes of the dual cone of Γ. Let be a partial differential operator with constant coefficients inR n, whereQ(ζ)≠0 onR niΓ′ andP i is an irreducible polynomial with real coefficients. Assume that the closure of each connected component of the set {ζ∈R niΓ′;P j(ζ)=0, gradP j(ζ)≠0} contains some real point on which gradP j≠0 and gradP j∉Γ∪(−Γ). LetC be an open cone inR n−Γ containing both normal directions at some such point, and intersecting each normal plane of every manifold contained in {ξ∈R n;P(ξ)=0}. Let Ω be a domain with piecewise smooth boundary. In general, it is impossible to obtain a generalized solution u ∈ W 2 2 (Ω) of the equation Δ x 2 u = f with the boundary conditions u = Δxu = 0 by solving iteratively a system of two Poisson equations under homogeneous Dirichlet conditions. Such a system is obtained by setting v = −Δu. In the two-dimensional case, this fact is known as the Sapongyan paradox in the theory of simply supported polygonal plates. In the present paper, the three-dimensional problem is investigated for a domain with a smooth edge Γ. If the variable opening angle α ∈ C(Γ) is less than π everywhere on the edge, then the boundary-value problem for the biharmonic equation is equivalent to the iterated Dirichlet problem, and its solution u inherits the positivity preserving property from these problems. In the case α ∈ (π 2π), the procedure of solving the two Dirichlet problems must be modified by permitting infinite-dimensional kernel and co-kernel of the operators and determining the solution u ∈ W 2 2 (Ω) by inverting a certain integral operator on the contour Γ. If α(s) ∈ (3π/2,2π) for a point s ∈ Γ, then there exists a nonnegative function f ∈ L2(Ω) for which the solution u changes sign inside the domain Ω. In the case of crack (α = 2π everywhere on Γ), one needs to introduce a special scale of weighted function spaces. In this case, the positivity preserving property fails. In some geometrical situations, the problems on well-posedness for the boundary-value problem for the biharmonic equation and the positivity property remain open. Definen K (λ) to be either ω, or the number of non-isomorphic models inK having cardinality α, whichever cardinal is larger. This paper contains a proof that for a congruence modular variety ⋎ of algebras of countable similarity type, there are only six possible functionsn . We prove that if the existence of a supercompact cardinal is consistent with ZFC, then it is consistent with ZFC that the p-rank of Ext (G, ℤ) is as large as possible for every prime p and for any torsion-free Abelian group G. Moreover, given an uncountable strong limit cardinal μ of countable cofinality and a partition of Π (the set of primes) into two disjoint subsets Π0 and Π1, we show that in some model which is very close to ZFC, there is an almost free Abelian group G of size 2μ = μ+ such that the p-rank of Ext (G, ℤ) equals 2μ = μ+ for every p ∈ Π0 and 0 otherwise, that is, for p ∈ Π1. Let Γ be a non-singular real-analytic hypersurface in some domainU ⊂ ℝ n and let Har0(U, Γ) denote the linear space of harmonic functions inU that vanish on Γ. We seek a condition onx 0,x 1U/Γ such that the reflection law (RL)u(x 0)+Ku(x 1)=0, ∀u∈Har0(U, Γ) holds for some constantK. This is equivalent to the class Har0 (U, Γ) not separating the pointsx 0,x 1. We find that in odd-dimensional spaces (RL)never holds unless Γ is a sphere or a hyperplane, in which case there is a well known reflection generalizing the celebrated Schwarz reflection principle in two variables. In even-dimensional spaces the situation is different. We find a necessary and sufficient condition (denoted the SSR—strong Study reflection—condition), which we described both analytically and geometrically, for (RL) to hold. This extends and complements previous work by e.g. P.R. Garabedian, H. Lewy, D. Khavinson and H. S. Shapiro.  相似文献

For everyn≥7, we show that the setS n(b) of zeros of the polynomialx nb (b≠0) is such that, iff, gW[x] or iff, gA(K), satisfyf −1(S n(b))=g −1(S n(b)), thenf n=g n. For everyn≥14, we show thatS n(b) is such that iff, gW({tx}) or iff, g ∈ ℳ(K) satisfyf −1(S n(b))=g −1(S n(b)), then eitherf n=g n, orfg is a constant. Analogous properties are true for complex entire and meromorphic functions withn≥8 andn≥15, respectively. For everyn≥9, we show that the setY n(c) of zeros of the polynomial , (withc≠0 and 1) is an ursim ofn points forW[x], and forA(K). For everyn≥16, we show thatY n(c) is an ursim ofn points forW(x), and for ℳ(K). We follow a method based on thep-adic Nevanlinna Theory and use certain improvement of a lemma obtained by Frank and Reinders.  相似文献

We consider various forms of the Conjecture of Chang. Part A constitutes an introduction. Donder and Koepke have shown that if ρ is a cardinal such that ρ ≧ ω1, and (ρ+++↠(ρ+, ρ), then 0+ exists. We obtain the same conclusion in Part B starting from some other forms of the transfer hypothesis. As typical corollaries, we get: Theorem A.Assume that there exists cardinals λ, κ, such that λ ≧ K + ≧ω2 and (λ+, λ)↠(K +,K. Then 0+ exists. Theorem B.Assume that there exists a singularcardinal κ such that(K +,K↠(ω1, ω0. Then 0+ exists. Theorem C.Assume that (λ ++, λ). Then 0+ exists (also ifK=ω 0. Remark. Here, as in the paper of Donder and Koepke, “O+ exists” is a matter of saying that the hypothesis is strictly stronger than “L(μ) exists”. Of course, the same proof could give a few more sharps overL(μ), but the interest is in expecting more cardinals, coming from a larger core model. Theorem D.Assume that (λ ++, λ)↠(K +, K) and thatK≧ω 1. Then 0+ exists. Remark 2. Theorem B is, as is well-known, false if the hypothesis “κ is singular” is removed, even if we assume thatK≧ω 2, or that κ is inaccessible. We shall recall this in due place. Comments. A subgroup D of GL (n, ℝ) is said to be admissible if the semidirect product of D and ℝ n , considered as a subgroup of the affine group on ℝ n , admits wavelets ψ ∈ L2(ℝ n ) satisfying a generalization of the Calderón reproducing, formula. This article provides a nearly complete characterization of the admissible subgroups D. More precisely, if D is admissible, then the stability subgroup Dx for the transpose action of D on ℝ n must be compact for a. e. x. ∈ ℝ n ; moreover, if Δ is the modular function of D, there must exist an a ∈ D such that |det a| ≠ Δ(a). Conversely, if the last condition holds and for a. e. x ∈ ℝ n there exists an ε > 0 for which the ε-stabilizer D x ε is compact, then D is admissible. Let λ be the upper Lyapunov exponent corresponding to a product of i.i.d. randomm×m matrices (X i) i 0/∞ over ℂ. We obtain an explicit formula for λ as a sum of a convergent series. We also consider the case where theX i's are chosen according to a Markov process and thus generalize a result of Lima and Rahibe [22]. Our results on λ enable us to provide an approximation for the numberN ≠0(F(x)n,r) of nonzero coefficients inF(x) n.(modr), whereF(x) ∈ ℤ[x] andr≥2. We obtain a generalization of the complete Perron effect whereby the characteristic exponents of all solutions change their sign from negative for the linear approximation system to positive for a nonlinear system with perturbations of higher-order smallness [Differ. We show that the discrete translation parameter sets Λ ⊂ ℝ for which some φ ∈ L1(ℝ) exists such that the translates φ(x − λ), λ ∈ Λ, span L1(ℝ) are exactly the uniqueness sets for certain quasianalytic classes, and give explicit constructions of such generators φ. Suppose Γ is a group acting on a set X, written as (Γ,X). An r-labeling f: X→{1,2, ..., r} of X is called distinguishing for (Γ,X) if for all σ∈Γ,σ≠1, there exists an element xX such that f(x)≠f(x σ ). The distinguishing number d(Γ,X) of (Γ,X) is the minimum r for which there is a distinguishing r-labeling for (Γ,X). If Γ is the automorphism group of a graph G, then d(Γ,V (G)) is denoted by d(G), and is called the distinguishing number of the graph G. The distinguishing set of Γ-actions is defined to be D*(Γ)={d(Γ,X): Γ acts on X}, and the distinguishing set of Γ-graphs is defined to be D(Γ)={d(G): Aut(G)≅Γ}. This paper determines the distinguishing set of Γ-actions and the distinguishing set of Γ-graphs for almost simple groups Γ.  相似文献

The classical result of Sakaguchi-Libera shows that Re(M′(z)/N′(z))<0 implies Re(M(z)/N(z))>0 in Δ whenever Re(λ(z))>0 in Δ. This can be expressed in terms of differential subordination as follows: for anyp analytic in Δ, withp(0)=1,p(z)+λ(z)zp′(z)<1+z/1−z impliesp(z)<1+z/1−z, for Reλ(z)>0,z∈Δ. In this paper we determine different type of general conditions on λ(z),h(z) and ϕ(z) for which one hasp(z)+λ(z)zp′(z)<h(z) impliesp(z)<ϕ(z)<h(z) z∈Δ. Then we apply the above implication to obtain new theorems for some classes of normalized analytic funotions. In particular we give a sufficient condition for an analytic function to be starlike in Δ.  相似文献
